How a Healthy Mediterranean Diet Might Reduce Inflammation and Pain

Reduce-Inflammation-and-Pain

Do you ever wake up feeling like you haven’t slept all night or with joints that hurt as you struggle out of bed? Me too.

These discomforts may be caused by ‘inflammaging’, chronic low-grade inflammation common in older adults, even in the absence of infection. Other possible symptoms of inflammaging are fatigue, a low fever, abdominal and/or chest pain.

Acute and Chronic Inflammation

Acute inflammation is a natural defense mechanism. When we are hurt, white blood cells flow to the injured area, release a chemical that stimulates blood flow and begin the healing process. This is how inflammation is supposed to work, and the way it does work most of the time.

Chronic inflammation is different. It occurs when things don’t operate normally – for example, when our adrenal glands elevate the levels of cortisol, a steroidal hormone that’s released when the body is under stress.

Immune system disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, polymyalgia and lupus can send the adrenal glands haywire and cause chronic inflammation.

Causes of Inflammation

Even without those conditions, inflammation can be present, especially in older adults. Some cardiovascular surgeons believe that inflammaging represents a significant risk factor for diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis and cancer.

Certain lifestyle factors are connected to inflammaging. Depending upon which research study you read, they include low activity levels, pro-inflammatory eating patterns, low levels of sex hormones and smoking.

I am intimately familiar with the challenges of chronic inflammation. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was 50, recently adding polymyalgia rheumatica to my health file. RA targets the joints, and PMR strikes the muscle groups around the shoulders, upper arms, hips and thighs.

I’ve worked with my rheumatologist to find medications with minimum side effects, but PMR doesn’t respond to much of anything but cortisone.

I don’t smoke, and my sex hormones are in pretty good shape, so in order to reduce the amount of cortisone I have to take, I’ve been paying more attention to my activity level and my diet.

After a year of eating carefully and stepping up my three-day-week exercise regimen to include a daily three-mile walk, I can vouch for the effectiveness of regular exercise and healthy food.

The importance of an anti-inflammatory diet wasn’t on my radar until recently, when it seems as if everyone else was talking and writing about it. I couldn’t help thinking, “Is this just the latest food fad?”

The Mayo Clinic, my go-to source of research on PMR, also explains how a healthy diet can help reduce pain.

Eat Your Vegetables

I decided to try the Mediterranean Diet, which is the most popular approach to anti-inflammatory eating. There is no calorie counting with the Mediterranean diet, and no foods are forbidden.

Instead, you are directed to a very-easy-to-follow food pyramid, and two lists: “Avoid these foods” and “Include plenty of these foods.” The Harvard School of Public Health offers these guidelines.

Foods that Inflame

Avoid or limit these foods as much as possible:

  • refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries
  • French fries and other fried foods
  • soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages
  • red meat (burgers, steaks) and processed meat (hot dogs, sausage)
  • margarine, shortening and lard

Foods that Combat Inflammation

Include plenty of these foods:

  • tomatoes
  • olive oil
  • green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards
  • nuts like almonds and walnuts
  • fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines
  • fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries and oranges

I quickly discovered why the Mediterranean Diet is so popular. The recommended foods are tasty, easily available and filling, and I didn’t miss the foods on the ‘avoid’ list.

Once I got past the sugar cravings, which took about two weeks, I found the diet easy to stick to, and I look forward to each meal. Even better, I started waking up feeling rested, and my joints didn’t hurt so much.

Even when I eat out, I can stick to the regimen; I just order a salad with added chicken or fish. You can start slowly, with one meal a day, like oatmeal or muesli for breakfast. Once you get your cupboards and refrigerator filled with anti-inflammatory foods, you can make this a permanent way of eating.

Have you ever woken more tired than rested? Did you think it had to do with inflammation? Have you ever experienced chronic pain or fatigue? Have you tried an anti-inflammatory diet? I’d love to hear how it worked for you.

Gucci Beauty’s First Mascara Is Here and This Is What It Does IRL

Last night was the Los Angeles launch of Gucci’s first-ever mascara, as well as a kick-off to the brand’s interactive West Hollywood pop-up shop. As a big fan of the company’s luxe lipsticks, I knew I had to do a Gucci Beauty mascara review. Mascara L’Obscur promises to be buildable and perfect for either a subtle or bold look. Its thin brush was created to catch every single lash so it’s like you’re wearing falsies—but a lot more comfortable. Does it deliver on its promise? Read more to find out.

Inside the pop-up’s warehouse-like space, Gucci Beauty models danced in Gucci, of course, including the campaign’s star Dani Miller who went viral for her imperfect teeth in the brand’s lipstick ads. Influencers and editors played around with the new mascara, got makeup touch-ups in the Gucci Beauty makeup set, drank champagne in the Gucci Guilty diner, took photos in the booth inside the Gucci Mémoire d’une Odeur library and snapped mirror selfies in the Gucci Bloom dressing room. It was a chaotic and colorful event full of self-expression.

Since I was already wearing mascara, I waited until the morning to fully test Mascara L’Obscur on clean lashes. The first thing you always notice with Gucci Beauty products is the luxe packaging. The tube’s gold lid feels heavy and expensive. Inside also looks a bit unique with its flexible elastomer brush with a thin tip. It bends and flexes as you move it, which I can see helping those who really want to coat every little lash.

My own lashes are more curled than usual thanks to a recent lash lift with Amazing Lash Studio. So, although I’m testing the mascara on “natural” eyelashes, the results are slightly more curled than they would be normally. That’s because this isn’t really a curling mascara. My experience with it is so far is it’s more about length than volume and curl. That works for my eyelashes regardless of whether I have a lift because my natural lashes aren’t super-straight. If yours are, you might want to bust out your curler first.

Because I generally like a lot of lashes, I decided just to go for it and I layered the Gucci mascara on with a few coats. The first thing I noticed is that the brush really does catch all the small lashes and I felt like it was coating all my hair with its jet-black formula. That’s what I loved. What I also loved is how long my lashes got without a ton of work.

Now onto what people might not like as much. I did feel like the formula clumped as I layered it on so if you’re looking for more natural fullness, this might not be the mascara for you. I don’t mind the bit of clumpiness—if anything, it feels rockstar-like and not unlike model Dani Miller’s lashes in the Gucci Beauty ads. I’m also really impressed by how long it’s lasting throughout my busy day. There are no flakes or smudges in sight. Although some might see this as a “nighttime” mascara, I can see myself using it for everyday glam.

Shed 10 Pounds in 10 Minutes? What to Do if You’re Struggling to Lose Weight After 60

Struggling-to-Lose-Weight-After-60

Sounds impossible, right?! Wrong! It’s very possible. Let me explain …

As we grow older and our body takes on different forms and dimensions (we become shape shifters), we may continue to dress as we always have, not realising it just doesn’t work anymore.

The day you look in the mirror and actually see your reflection, in all its mid-life-plus glory, is the day you possibly start to rethink your image. Or you may not. There are plenty of women happy to dress as they did 20 years ago.

But when you see yourself, really see yourself, for the first time, you realise you need to step in and take control.

Let’s start with a few questions …

  • Do you believe we should dress age appropriately?
  • Do you believe in that careful balance between fashion and style?
  • Do you follow fashion?
  • Do you worry what other people think about the way you dress?

Obviously, you cannot lose 10 pounds in 10 minutes, but you can dress to make yourself look as though you’re 10 pounds lighter!

When you’re trying to look smaller, the trick is to create a long vertical line. There are some specific things you can do to achieve a leaner, longer look.

So where should you begin?

Get Some Support

You really can take off years and pounds by investing in a really good, well-fitted bra. Find yourself somewhere you’re comfortable and get your bras fitted by a corsetiere. Good foundation garments are an investment.

While you’re being fitted for a bra, why not get some new shapewear… it can do wonders for your silhouette.

Stand Up Straight!

Did you know you can lose pounds by practicing good deportment? It’s the truth. And don’t scuff your feet!

Accessorise

Long chains or necklaces, long thin scarves, bangles to hide your non-waist. Use brooches for accents and to bring the eye away from your changed shape. Wear chain belts at an angle.

Wear…

  • Long tunic tops, long sweaters, and long jackets.
  • Leave jackets open to create a longer look.
  • V-necks – the proper style. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!
  • Monochromatic colours, matching top and bottom or single-colour.
  • Suits, skirt and pants, all create a vertical, slim look.
  • Slim trousers or jeans. Try and avoid low-rise or mid-rise, they will make you look shorter.
  • Straight skirts that stop mid-knee or just below the knee.
  • Flesh-coloured stockings to accentuate and lengthen the legs.

Wear cross-body bags; they will make you look leaner. If you can, and you’re going somewhere important, wear heels (I know; it can be very painful). Even a small heel will make a difference.

All of these little tricks will have the desired effect and will visually slim you down. 10 pounds? Yes. It’s all about the subtle art of camouflage.

What is your own personal style? Are you ready to create one? Do you believe there are some things we really should not wear over 60? How do you feel about what’s available in stores or online? Please share your thought and experience with our community!

Kyle Richards’ Pink Lounge Outfit on Instastories

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Instagram Fashion 2020

Kyle Richards’ pink lounge outfit on Instastories is something I’ve legit been obsessing over since it came out; I mean the material just looks so comfy, plus I love the fact that unlike what I’m wearing right now it’s a totally non-embarrassing look to wear around the house that actually makes you feel somewhat “dressed.” And with even more shows to add to my scheduled programming on the horizon (like RHOBH, RHONY and KUWTK), needless to say I think it’s about time I start lounging in style and stop terrifying the Uber Eats delivery people like Kyle.

Kristin Cavallari’s Black Draped Floral Print Skirt

Kristin Cavallari’s Black Draped Floral Print Skirt in Italy

Season 3 Episode 9 Very Cavallari Fashion

Kristin Cavallari’s black draped floral print skirt in Italy is an example of one of my favorite trends this year. And though I do like the skirt itself, I have come love the whole sweater-with-a-midi-skirt look. I have been seeing it so much I had to order a similar outfit. Another trend I like (and have yet to conquer) is the chunky sneakers with a skirt or dress also seen on Kristin here.

Now as I sit and look at all the photo of Kristin’s trip I wonder where these trends when I was in Italy. Granted it was 2005 and I was 12 on my 7th grade school trip, still would’ve been a nice addition to my learning experience. I remember we had to do soooo much walking so sneakers were necessary, but I wanted to wear my finest skirts and dresses in the hopes of some rich young Italian boy would see me. Unfortunately the whole dress to impress thing hadn’t hit middle schools, so I was stuck with my dirty sneakers, cargo pants, and a polo. Fortunately, this whole look good feel good trend is here now so now I can confidently order two things:

1. Another trip to Italy

2. Another a pair of chunky sneakers to go with my skirt

Sincerely Stylish,

Jess
