In the Clutches of the Hot Flushes – What Are They and What Can You Do About Them?

In the Clutches of the Hot Flushes – What Are They and What Can You Do About Them

Are you experiencing hot flushes? Have you been through menopause, but still have the same symptoms? This is a very common occurrence.

75% of women report experiencing hot flushes
from approximately age of 40 through to 80.

What Is a Hot Flush?

A hot flush is a
sudden wave of mild or intense body heat, sometimes followed by chills. This is
believed to be due to decreased oestrogen levels and hormonal changes.

Flushes last from
a few seconds to a half-hour, due to blood vessels opening and constricting.
These episodes often cause distress and affect psychological health.

What Causes a Hot Flush?

The source of hot flushes is unknown but
appears to be connected to several factors. Every woman is different, however,
which makes it a difficult task to pinpoint the exact causes. Investigation is
ongoing.

According to research, hot flushes are usually caused by:

  • Lowered
    Estrogen
  • Stress/Anxiety
  • Consumption
    of phytoestrogens (soy products)
  • Thyroid
    dysfunction
  • Biopsychosocial
behaviours – what you think about menopause can be a trigger to how you cope
    with it
  • Smoking
  • Poor
    nutrition

Who Is
Prone to Hot Flushes?

It seems that not
all women experience hot flushes. So, who does? Generally, these are women with
a low tolerance to core (inner) temperatures or changing hormone levels.

Women who suffer
from disorders like stress, anxiety, and depression are also prone to hot
flushes. Additionally, women who’ve had chemotherapy/radiation and
hysterectomies can also experience these symptoms.

What
Happens in the Body?

The Hypothalamus
sits at the base of your brain. It controls your body’s thermoregulation. Its
job is to help manage your core internal temperature.

Due to external factors,
your temperature may drop too low or rise too high. An SOS is then sent to
muscles, organs, and the endocrine (hormonal) system. When the body receives
these signals, it adapts to the change, i.e., via shivering or sweating.

Women sensitive
to temperature changes may experience hot flushes. This is due to the narrowing
of the core body temperature set point. Changes in hormone levels also affect
other hormones responsible for regulating your body temperature.

According to the
Women’s Health Network, the effects of
menopause vary depending on culture
. In fact, many
women in the western world suffer from long-term hot flushes, while women from
the east haven’t even heard of this symptom.

The organization
notes that stress and depression have a detrimental effect on the health of
numerous women. Negative mindsets towards transitional changes from the effects
of menopause can cause severe symptoms.

Science is making
great discoveries in the field of women’s health. Research continues into the
origins of menopause and the accompanying side effects. And we do know the mind
is a very powerful tool when it comes to the way we deal with life.

How Can You Help Yourself?

The key to
alleviating menopausal symptoms seems to be found in mindset. By adopting a
positive attitude towards menopause and the changes it’s made to your life, you
can actually ease the severity of your symptoms. And remember, you are not
facing this alone.

Some women shared
with me that their doctor dismissed their concerns about menopausal transition.
If this is your experience, please find a medical professional who treats you
with respect as an individual and offers help and clarification around your
menopausal symptoms.

Possible Lifestyle Triggers to Cut Down or Avoid

Many studies point to certain factors
that can trigger menopausal symptoms. These include:

  • Caffeine
  • Dehydration
  • Sugar
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy
    foods
  • Stressful
    situations
  • Stressful
    thoughts
  • Sleeping
in a hot or unventilated room
  • Too
    many clothes
  • Worrying
    about the next hot flush
  • Rarely
prioritising quiet and nurturing time for yourself

There are other simple and effective ways to help you through hot flushes. To this end, I have broken down the what, why, and how of it all into a downloadable video tutorial.

Are you experiencing hot flushes? When do they
affect you the most? What do you do to alleviate their effect? Please share
with our community and let’s have a conversation.

Blue Light Products That’ll Protect Your Skin While You Stare at Screens All Day

You already know how important it is to protect your skin from the sun’s age-accelerating (and cancer-causing) UV rays with an SPF. Sunspots, fine lines, and enlarged pores are just a few of the myriad of skin woes courtesy of the sun, but now the skin is facing a new enemy: High Energy Visible Light (HEV Light). As if it wasn’t a hassle enough to protect your complexion from the sun when outdoors and even indoors where natural light is abundant, now you have to be concerned when you’re at the office typing away or scrolling through your Instagram feed too. Hence the onslaught of blue light beauty products on the scene.

Recent research suggests that the blue light emitted from our cell phones, computer screens, and certain light bulbs is also damaging to the health of our skin, prompting the beauty sphere to launch a slew of blue light skincare with HEV defense. There are plenty of commonalities amongst HEV, UVB, and UVA rays when it comes to the harm they incite. All three are associated with causing oxidative stress, which causes our skin to release free radicals, which disrupt and slow down our skin’s natural elastin and collagen production. This is detrimental because collagen and elastin are the key components of youthful-looking skin, influencing firmness, hydration levels, and tone.

Hence, just like outdoor light rays, blue light is also responsible for premature aging (photoaging), and unprotected light exposure can also lead to dark spots and hyperpigmentation. However, HEV rays actually affect (and damage) our skin in different ways than UVB rays, because they’re capable of penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin rather than just the outermost layer. What this means, is that they’re capable of tampering with collagen production and our skin’s natural ability to exfoliate with the help of retinoids and acids.

Now, we’re not suggesting that you quit your phone cold turkey or put in your two weeks notice in the name of avoiding free radical damage from screens, but making sure to keep your skin protected when you’re indoors is evidently, equally as paramount of a consideration when it comes to your skincare routine. Fortunately, brands are catching on to skin’s latest villain, offering plenty of defensive products to help you prevent and reverse existing damage so you can maintain your weekend Netflix binge-watching routine, shameless scroll through the apps, and your career without compromising your pursuit of flawless skin.

Upgrade Your Toilet With These Bidet Spray Attachments

Bidets may seem like a novel, exotic toilet add-on, but they’re gaining a lot of popularity as of late, thanks to their sustainable and eco-friendly appeal. It’s never been accessible and budget-friendly to get your hands on a bidet, whether it’s in bottle form or a bidet. Indeed, bidets are decidedly the coolest new “home decor” accessory that is not only sort of chic, but also a great way to cut down on toilet paper use (and save money in the process.)

The paper-free rear-end-cleansing devices are also great because they help to reduce the inevitable clogged toilet situation that comes with using traditional toilet paper, and they also offer better personal hygiene to boot. Basically, there’s kind of no reason not to get a bidet at this point, right? Ahead, check out some of our favorite bidet sprayer models to give your bathroom a major upgrade.

Bella Hadid Cut Her Own Bangs in Isolation and It Actually Worked

Like many models, Bella Hadid generally keeps her hair in a classic, mid-length cut that can be switched up easily for fashion shows. She does like bangs though, often giving faux fringe or curtain bangs a spin. Just like other celebrities while home physical distancing, Hadid cut bangs herself, opting not to wait for salons to open back up and her glam team to re-join her. Don’t worry though—Hadid is a bit of a pro because she leaned from the best.

Unlike Camila Cabello who had her mom trim her bangs and things got a little sticky, Hadid gave her own fringe a light dusting so she can finally see again. “I cut my bangs,” the model captioned an Instagram photo. She kept her fringe long and side-swept, which is a lot easier to cut and a lot harder to make a mistake. No doubt, she learned a thing or two from her hairstylist Jen Atkin, who has been giving at-home tips and tricks over on her own Instagram.

Bella isn’t the only Hadid sister taking a spin as a hairstylist while in isolation. Older sister Gigi gave her friend Leah McCarthy a “full quarantine cut” per McCarthy’s Instagram. “I go to the Hadid salon because the prices are fair and the snacks are good,” she joked. Both models did a pretty great job cutting hair. Models often pick up hair and makeup skills since they spend so much time with the best of the best artists in the game, while sitting in their chairs. Still, we’re sure they can’t wait until their glam team comes back into their life.
