Real Housewives of New York Season 12 Episode 7 Fashion

Leah McSweeney’s pink ombre sweater that she wore to “Weed Orchard” (which as we learned, is apparently just an orchard) on last night’s episode of RHONY was the perfect choice for a beautiful fall day of corn-mazing and wine tasting. And although for some reason we were only able to track it down in green, we of course still felt the need to do a post as to not seriously piss all you Leah fans off.

5 Drunk Elephant Dupes to Stash Inside Your Medicine Cabinet

Drunk Elephant is undoubtedly the It Girl of the skincare realm. She’s cool, confident and has a dedicated base of followers (stars like Khloe Kardashian and Vanessa Hudgens included!) that follow her every move. However, while Drunk Elephant is nothing short of a buzzworthy skincare brand, there’s no denying that some of our favorite buys (looking at you C-Firma!) can take a lot of coin from that hard-earned paycheck once payday comes knocking. And for this reason, some of the best Drunk Elephant dupes are climbing the ranks of cult-favorite products you have to try at least once.

This also doesn’t mean you shouldn’t splurge on some of these Drunk Elephant standouts every once and a while, as we all know that some beauty buys are totally worth the price. However, should you want to save a little more money on skincare products that are equally effective, here are five inexpensive but equally effective dupes for all those Drunk Elephant bestsellers you love. From moisturizers to serums to a night serum that rivals the infamous Babyfacial, these formulas will save face and a paycheck or two along the way.

Drunk Elephant. The Ordinary.

For Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer: The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA Cream

Drunk Elephant’s Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer gets high marks for its impressive hydrating content, as it delivers a nourishing formula of signal peptides, growth factors and amino acids to the skin.

This superstar hydrator also costs $68, making The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA Cream a suitable alternative. Besides, if we know anything about The Ordinary, it’s that it delivers amazing skincare essentials for unbelievable prices. Bargain appeal aside though, not only does this budget-friendly cream have the same whipped texture of Protini, but it adds amino acids, dermal lipids, and hyaluronic acid to the mix, keeping the skin hydrated and plump around the clock.

Drunk Elephant. La Roche-Posay.

For C-Firma Vitamin C Day Serum: La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C Face Serum with Salicylic Acid

The hype surrounding Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Vitamin C Day Serum ($80) is rightfully deserved, as it uses a 15 percent concentration of vitamin C, fruit enzymes and antioxidants to promote brighter and clear-looking skin with every use. But while C-Firma is a skincare investment product any beauty influencer would want to get their hands on, you’ll love to know that there are other supercharged vitamin C serums out there that can help you achieve radiant #nofilter skin.

The La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C Face Serum with Salicylic Acid, for example, is definitely one of those products, as it fuses 10 percent pure vitamin C with anti-aging ingredients like salicylic acid and neurosensine. Plus, it’s also under $40, allowing you to grab two bottles for the price of one C-Firma serum.

Drunk Elephant. First Aid Beauty.

For T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum: FAB Skin Lab Resurfacing Liquid 10% AHA

While this Drunk Elephant Resurfacing Night Serum ($90) is jam-packed with skin-boosting ingredients (glycolic plus, tartaric, lactic, and citric acids), but it also starts at $90 which can be an arm and a leg for some shoppers.

To save both your skin and your paycheck, trust that the FAB Skin Lab Resurfacing Liquid 10% AHA can keep your skin looking ultra-radiant, as it also uses an AHA blend (powered by four alpha-hydroxy acids) at ten percent to help brighten up dull skin. And yes, this resurfacing liquid is still technically a splurge item of sorts. However, it still saves you more money when compared to its costly counterpart.

Drunk Elephant. Farmacy.

For T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial 25% AHA + 2% BHA Mask: Farmacy Honeymoon Glow AHA Resurfacing Night Serum

There’s no real surprise why the Drunk Elephant Babyfacial ($80) is a top-seller since it buffs away dull and flaking cells, leaving the skin glowing, and feeling as soft as a baby’s bottom. And although this product has received endorsements from celebrities like Drew Barrymore, it’s a true fact that this resurfacing facial treatment costs a whopping $80, which can be a major blow to your tight budget.

However, should you want an inexpensive (yet equally effective!) glow-inducing facial treatment that leaves your skin feeling velvety smooth, let the Farmacy Honeymoon Glow AHA Resurfacing Night Serum take your skincare regimen to new heights, as it is formulated with a 14 percent AHA/BHA/gentle flower acids and utilizes hydrating honey to prevent unwanted irritation.

Drunk Elephant. It Cosmetics.

For Lala Retro Whipped Moisturizer with Ceramides: It Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream Hydrating Moisturizer

Dry skin definitely doesn’t stand a chance against the Drunk Elephant Whipped Moisturizer ($60) that utilizes a blend of six African oils (plus ceramides!) to replenish moisture back into the skin’s natural barrier. And yes, this whipped moisturizer may be one of the more affordable items from this buzzy brand, but let’s be honest: a $60 splurge isn’t exactly doable when you’ve got bills to pay.

However, the It Cosmetics Confidence In A Cream Hydrating Moisturizer is a slightly more reasonably priced hydrator that can keep your skin full of moisture with ceramides plus other anti-aging ingredients (peptides, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and squalene) that sends fine lines and wrinkles packing.

Forget Brain Games! 14 Ways Reading and Writing Can Give Your Aging Brain a Boost!

Brain-games-reading-writing

Reading is a passion we can take
into our old age and not worry about our performance! After all, it’s not a
game we’re playing… we’re just keeping our brains functioning at optimum
level.

Let’s be clear. Scrolling through
Facebook is not a brain workout. Reading a book is. In fact, all the new-fangled
brain games we play are really no substitute for plain old reading which can be
called the first brain game.

Reading gives our brain a serious
workout. As you’re reading this, for example, your brain is decoding a series
of complex symbols (bet you never heard letters described in that way before!),
and then creating complex ideas from the synthesised results.

The Benefits of Reading

The benefits of reading include:

Stress Reduction

Reading lowers your stress levels.
Focussing on what you’re reading is far removed from everyday life and its
problems.

Mental Stimulation

Whatever your read will exercise
your brain, get you thinking, and help your imagination to soar.

Improved Social Skills

Reading enhances empathy, and
reading fiction helps you to understand the mental states, differing ideas,
wants and needs, and beliefs.

Enhanced Memory

Reading is known to improve
memory – even if only for discussion with fellow readers in the book club
you’re going to join! Reading has been shown to stimulate memory as well as
slow cognitive decline as we age.

Better Brain Connections
and Function

Flex your imagination muscle and
get the two brain halves connecting better. Strengthen the bridge between the
logical left and the creative right! Read those novels that have been sitting
gathering dust.

Improved Sleep

Ditch the screen and make reading
a part of your bedtime ritual. But limit the time. There are some books that
are really hard to put down and you won’t sleep better at all!

Large Vocabulary

Your vocabulary has grown over
the years and continuing to read will make it grow further. That is, of course,
the magic of words, and they can make our imaginations burst forth!

Benefits of Writing After
60

When it comes to writing, we become
better at it as we age. Here’s why:

More Experience to Draw on

If you’re telling your story or
writing something fictional, you have years of experience to share. Draw on it!

Greater Life Knowledge

Yes, you have become wiser! You know
things you may have even forgotten learning, but once you put pen to paper, the
flood gates open. It’s like opening a packet of Maltesers…

Brilliant at Creating Work
Plans

The big tip here is to write everything down. Create lists and
tick off items only when they are done. Don’t waste valuable brain space by
trying to remember everything. You have better things to do.

Continuous Brain Growth

Utilise the potential available
and keep it moving. You’re slowing cognitive decline by doing so.

Broader and More
Interesting Vocabulary

You have a lifetime of words to
play with; recall and re-learn and just expand.

Emotions Management

You may need to manage our emotions,
especially when it comes to editing the writing we produce.

Better Communication
Between Left and Right Brain Halves

Your logical left brain
communicates far better with your creative right brain as you age. It makes it
easier to gather your thoughts and use them to your best advantage.

You probably noticed that reading
and writing have the same effects, though in slightly different ways. But they
are both crucial to slowing the aging of your brain.

Whatever reasons, or excuses, you
have used not to write, get rid of them now. You have the time and the
inclination so start writing. Let the butterfly in you fly.

If you didn’t read when you were
younger because you never had the time, now you can make the time. Stimulate
your brain and let your imagination out of its cage.

How often do you read? What type of books do you prefer? Have you ever
thought of writing a book or is it still a dream on your bucket list? Please
share in the comments below!

Uplift Your Spirit and Sing Your Way to Health and Joy in the Years Beyond 60

benefits of singing

I think many of us harbor a secret dream about singing onstage with a rock band. I had this dream fulfilled last week when my choir director, Leah Hokanson, gave us the opportunity to sing with her backup band.

It’s
true that my voice likely got lost among the 50 other voices beside me. That’s
what gave me the courage to belt out every song and to have fun doing it. Such
a high!

Singing Boosts Us on Every Level

Many
of us grew up singing in church, but even outside of a church setting, singing in
a choir can be a spiritual and healing experience. Peace, unity, belonging, and
connection are some of the feelings we experience when we sing together. It uplifts
our spirit and gives us hope.

You
probably were sung to as a child or sang to your own children. Singing is known
to help children learn language skills. Songs remain with us as we age, and
often those with dementia can sing all the words to songs they learned many
years before.

Don’t
worry about thinking you can’t sing or that your voice is unusual. That didn’t
stop Macy Gray, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, or Leonard Cohen from having a career
in music.

Even
professional singers need to develop their talent. Singing is a skill like any
other. It takes practice. There are learnable techniques that can enable you to
trust your voice and allow your natural tone to emerge.

Singing
together is a communal form of self-entertainment and joy, and it’s in our
history. There are choirs all over the world, similar to mine, that welcome all
voices into the mix.

Our
Song Keepers Women’s Choir connects all ages and professions together. Our
oldest member will be 100 years old next week, and singing might have a lot to
do with it.

Physical Health Benefits

Singing
is a full-body experience. It encourages deep breathing, which delivers more
blood to the brain. It can increase lung capacity and strengthen your
diaphragm.

Standing
while singing can strengthen your legs and improve balance. Singing boosts
immunity and can reduce stress and heart disease.

Mental Health Benefits

Singing
makes you feel good. It is a natural anti-depressant. It’s fun, uplifts your
spirit, and can be an instant mood-enhancer as it takes your mind off of daily
worries and can transform a sad mood into bliss.

Group
singing reduces stress and anxiety. It releases endorphins, hormones that make
us feel happy, and oxytocin, a hormone that lowers stress and creates bonding. It’s
not surprising then, that people who stutter when they speak often sing without
a trace of a speech impediment.

Increases Confidence Using Your Voice

Realizing
you can sing gives you confidence to use your voice in daily living. My friend Jean
McLaren, now in her 90s, is a founding member of the Raging Grannies – an
international group of older women who are social justice activists.

They
found their voice and their power through singing. They dress up in clothes
that mock stereotypes of older women and sing humorous songs that advocate for
peace and the environment.

Builds Community and Belonging

Singing
together is a powerful way to connect with others by sharing of heart, mind,
soul, and emotions. It can help you learn a new language or culture, being a
cross-cultural experience.

You
likely sang as a child as a way to connect with friends and family. When people
sing together in a group, heartbeats actually sync up. Singing together builds
community and can restore harmony in our fragmented world.

The
bonds felt by singing with others create intimacy and connection. It’s no
surprise that choral singers tend to be some of the happiest people in the
world.

Ready to Sing?

Appreciate
the uniqueness of your own voice. Be like a kid again and sing for the fun of
it.

Now
that you’re primed to experience the singer’s high, search for your favourite
version of Leonard Cohen’s well-loved song, “Hallelujah,” crank it up and sing
your heart out. I’ll be doing the same where I live.

How often do you sing? Is it an
individual or group experience? Do you sing in a choir? What’s your favourite
song to sing? Please share your experience with our community!
