7 Fun Ways to Feel Sexy at 60

Sexy at 60

Right about now, you’re probably groaning and thinking here we go, another article about dyeing my hair and exercising, and do I care about being sexy anyway?

Aha! You’re wrong.

Why We Should All Be Sexy at 60

I have a very different approach to ageing. Basically, I think we should all work with what we’ve got. Studies reveal that at 60 we are more confident about our bodies than we were in our 50s and are keen to try out new activities and, in many cases, enjoy new relationships.

Should you be one of the many ladies who are not feeling that way yet, why not try out a few suggestions from my “how to feel instantly sexy” guide. If nothing else, they will help you meet new friends, feel healthier, and give you more confidence.

Here are a few suggestions from the guide.

Take Up Belly Dancing

I could write an entire post about the benefits of belly dancing. In fact, I could write an entire book, but let me say here that belly dancing will definitely make you feel sexier.

The belly dancing community is incredibly supportive and classes are huge fun. You will be surprised at the age ranges in the classes. It is not merely for the young.

I expected to spend my time sniggering as I wobbled my large out-of-shape belly, but I found it too enjoyable for that. The benefits are almost instantaneous and you will find you stand taller and straighter and hold that wobbly belly in from day one.

More importantly, you will feel more womanly and sexier. Several classes later and I am a convert, and my poor grumpy old husband has to run for cover now when I wave my coin belt at him.

Try a Burlesque Class

Yes, a burlesque class will leave you feeling much sexier. It is all about the slow tease in burlesque. People love it today because it incorporates all the old school glamour, and satire, and highlights the female form – it’s something that many women see themselves doing and quite honestly more and more “older women” are taking a taster class and loving it.

Burlesque takes its name from the Italian word burla, meaning joke, so I was naturally drawn to it. However, it’s advisable to not walk down the street in your Basque.

Stand Up Comedy

No, I have not lost the plot. I took up stand-up comedy some years ago. It’s amazing how well I was received, and men love women who can make them laugh. It is very empowering and boosts confidence to no end once you get over the initial jitters.

There are many courses where you can learn stand up or you can do one online, or just write a few jokes and test them out on your friends and family. Trust me – laughter is an aphrodisiac.

Invest in a Good Eyebrow Kit and Bush Up Your Eyebrows

Research has shown that we perceive women with thicker, flatter (not curved) eyebrows to be more youthful. This was certainly the case for me. A wonderful makeup girl pencilled me thick, dark eyebrows. Given my eyebrows dropped out years ago and migrated to my top lip, I was delighted to see how I looked with eyebrows.

My mother thought I’d had Botox when she saw me on television and couldn’t believe my transformation was down to eyebrows.

Change Your Mascara

I was given another top tip from a makeup professional – only wear blue or purple mascara. Black is too heavy for us “older” ladies but blue and purple makes the eyes look larger, and again you will look more youthful.

If you look more youthful, you will feel good about yourself. If you feel good about yourself, you’ll feel sexier. I rest my case.

Wear Red Underwear

Again, research has shown that if you wear the colour red, you feel more confident. Put it next to your skin and you’ll feel like a femme fatale.

Laugh a Lot

Not only is laughter good for your health, but also if you smile a lot and laugh, you are perceived to be younger than you are.

The list of benefits of laughter is lengthy. Laughter boosts the immune system by increasing the number of antibody-producing T cells, releases tension, relieves pain, helps people with depression, helps boost memory, lowers your blog pressure, helps protect your heart, gives a great abdominal workout and may even help you find a new mate. Men love women who laugh in their presence, and women actually laugh 125% more than men.

Suffice it to say, you will feel wonderfully well after a hearty chuckle. Get hold of a box set of your favourite comedy DVDs or Netflix shows and settle down for a giggle-fest. You’ll be surprised what it might lead to.

You may not think it is imperative to “feel sexy” and for many, it is not a priority, but we are still role models for those yet to hit the big six-oh, so why not show them we can still enjoy ourselves, look good and enjoy life? Feeling sexy and well is all part of that, so let’s strut our stuff.

Do you feel sexy at 60? What do you do to connect with your sensual side? Do you do any of the activities listed here? Please join the conversation.

3 Age-Related Exercise Myths That Hold You Back: Do You Believe Them?

Age-Related-Exercise-Myths

It’s been 24 years since I earned my first of four personal training certifications in 1995. As I proudly displayed the American Council of Exercise (ACE) certificate on my wall, I thought I had all I needed to help people get fit.

I vowed to motivate, inspire, and heroically save the world from flabby triceps, weak abs, and jiggly thighs!

I would be a fitness superhero, fighting off the bad habits of the planet, armed with fitness tubing, dumbbells, and a yoga mat, carried on the shoulders of the people I’d helped.

The Lessons I Learned

Excuse me while I partake in a fit of uncontrollable laughter.

Oh, the fantasies of youth! It should be so easy.

After working with people (mostly women) for over 20 years, I’ve learned a thing or two as I near my 60th birthday.

One is this: No one can motivate another person until they make up their minds to make a commitment.

Another eye-opener is this: Yes, things do change as we age, even when we do all the right things.

You simply can’t fool Mother Nature.

However, the worst thing you can do is blame aging as an excuse to stop exercising altogether.

Age Is Not the Problem

Truth is, unless you’re in a full body cast suspended from the ceiling, you can almost always do something.

Clearly, I’m not advocating doing anything beyond your abilities, but we often limit ourselves when inactivity can actually worsen the situation.

Case in point: I have knee arthritis. It hurts. I hate it, and yes, my knee pain has put the kibosh on some of the activities I’d like to do.

Walking lunges and high-impact jumps are a long-forgotten fantasy.

Let’s have a moment of silence for those days.

But if I stay within a modified range of motion and stick with exercises that don’t aggravate it, I can still do a lot. So, I do what I can and stop focusing on what I can no longer do.

When I don’t move, it hurts more. Research shows I’m not alone. In fact, regular exercise reduces the risk of limitations associated with knee osteoarthritis.

With this in mind, here are the top three excuses I hear most often that can sabotage results and health.

#1 Myth: I’m Too Tired to Work Out

Fatigue is definitely more of a thing as we age. It takes more energy to perform the same activities and hence, we need more recovery time. It has to do with changes in the workings of our cells, which are too complicated to get into here.

And while you need to listen to your body and give yourself more rest days between workouts, overall, exercise gives you energy. Regular, low-intensity exercise boosts energy levels.

Here’s how it works: For one, exercise increases blood flow through your body and boosts cardiovascular health. This allows more blood and oxygen to provide energy for work.

Numerous studies show this time and again. The best way to experience the results is to try it yourself. Track your energy on days you exercise versus days you do not and let the results speak for themselves.

#2 Myth: Avoid Balance Exercises if You Feel Wobbly

A reader recently wrote to me saying she can’t do certain exercises because she has such poor balance.

The problem is, if you stop doing things that challenge your balance, your balance will get worse. Breaking a hip or other bone is no joke. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away, either.

The bottom line: Working on your balance is a crucial part of any workout plan.

Here are a couple of ways to get steadier:

  • Stand on one foot and time yourself for 5 – 10 seconds (stand near a stable object or wall if you’re wobbly). Switch feet. You can do this while talking on the phone, standing at the sink or while waiting for the microwave to beep.
  • Incorporate exercises that challenge your balance, such as the bird dog or one-legged biceps curls. Over time you’ll start to see improvements.

#3 Myth: If You’re Feeling Achy, Skip Your Workout

Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart… Arthritis and joint pain is a Catch-22. It may hurt a bit to get moving, but if you don’t move, it will get worse.

Movement keeps joints mobile by circulating the fluid that lubricates them. If you stop moving, you get stiff.

What can you do to ease the discomfort? Here are a few tips:

  • Schedule workouts for those times when you’re not as stiff. If you’re achy in the morning, wait until later in the day to exercise when your body is warmed up.
  • Find ways to compensate. If doing an exercise in a specific way hurts your hands, or knees, for example, look for ways to modify the exercise.
  • Use compression gear or equipment designed to ease arthritis symptoms. You can find support accessories for just about every joint and body part, from elbows to calves and gloves for your hands.

What excuses will you put aside in the coming year? How will you use these tips to get you going? Let’s chat!

Whether on your body, bikini line, or chin, body and facial is hair a fact of life that some of us aren’t exactly happy to live with (and if you are, more power to you!). Between DIY waxing to good old fashion razors, there’s definitely no shortage of hair removal methods and tools to get rid of unwanted fuzz right from the comfort of your own home. In fact, electric hair removers are a wonderful alternative that instantly blasts away peach fuzz or longer hair without the irritation, discomfort, or dropping a huge wad of cash for an in-office treatment.

Commonly used as men’s grooming tools to shape, refine, and trim unruly beards, these hair removers are actually totally unisex and work the same wonders for any gender. Sure, you can use dermaplaning tools — which are great for facial hair, peach fuzz, and exfoliation, but for the tougher and more course stuff, you’re going to need something a bit more robust. Lizzo Matched Her Oversized Hair Clips To Her Pink Dress In The Most ’90s Way Possible

Anytime Lizzo shows up to give or accept an award she steals the show. Her two killer looks tonight were no different. Though she looked incredible walking the red carpet, we’re really drooling over Lizzo’s hair clips for her second Grammys look. She matched three oversized, ’90s-style clips to her pink Balmain gown.

Lizzo’s usual glam team was responsible for the look. Alexx Mayo was on makeup and Shelby Swain was on hair. Mayo first used Dermaflash Luxe ($199 at Ulta) to get rid of any dead skin cells on the face and then applied Charlotte Tilbury makeup, including the Hollywood Flawless Filter ($44 at Sephora). Her gorgeous lashes are super affordable: Kiss Lash Couture Matte Black in Matte Sheer ($7.99 at Ulta).

Swain used Matrix hair products for Lizzo’s sleek ‘do, including the Total Results Miss Mess Dry Finishing Spray ($18 at Ulta) to set fly-aways. She dried her hair with the ghd Helios Hair Dryer ($249 at Ulta). When we inquired about Lizzo’s hair clips, Swain says she just grabbed them from a beauty supply store. What a find.

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.
