5 Books to Cure Cabin Fever

books for cabin fever

I’ve had enough snow and ice and freezing temps. And long days indoors.

Like everyone else, I’m eager to pack a bag and escape. I dream of travels to a sandy beach or a windswept island or a city with winding streets to wander. Even though I must wait to visit relatives, attend a wedding, and cheer on a baseball team, I can travel the world with books.

These selections transported me to Australia, France, England, and Ireland. All destinations I crave to explore. So, put on a big pot of soup, curl up with a blanket, and enjoy!

The Chanel Sisters by Judithe Little

When we hear Chanel, glamour comes to mind. But Coco’s and Antoinette’s poor and parentless childhood, along with heartbreaking losses, make their success all the more impressive. Their constant search for “something better” led them to create a fashion empire that flourished, even during the war.

As she told me in our interview, Judithe Little loves to research and uncover “little nuggets” for a story. When she looked up information for The Chanel Sisters, she pored over old French newspapers. She discovered Antoinette’s tiny notices, announcing her whereabouts, so her wealthy clients knew where to find – and shop – with her.

“I didn’t understand why I couldn’t find anything else about Coco or Antoinette in the papers,” Judithe says. But, in the early 1900s, the sisters were tradespeople. They were something better, but not “good enough” for society newspaper coverage.

I predict lovers of historical fiction, fashionistas or not, will devour Judithe’s latest novel.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

This page-turner examines a privileged, young crowd who gathers for a wedding on a creepy island in Ireland.

Quick chapters, which encourage me to read “just one more” before I turn off the light and go to sleep, keep the story moving along at a rapid clip.

During the wedding festivities, the public schoolboys temper their cocky behavior when someone turns up dead. With lots of twists and turns, the story – named one of the New York Times’ best thrillers of last year – is told in alternating viewpoints.

I’m glad I read this novel on my Kindle because – confession – I had to look up some of the “youthful” terms!

The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles

“Accept people for who they are, not for who you want them to be.”

Yes, another war book. But, in The Paris Library, readers glimpse a slice of history most of us know nothing about.

Based on true people and events, this novel traces the courageous steps of the librarians at the American Library in Paris. The library remained open during World War II, supplying books to those subscribers banned by Hitler.

In 1939, Odile works at the library – a dream job in troubled times. Lily, in 1983, lives in small-town Montana and shares a love of literature and independence with her elderly neighbor.

Both learn lessons the hard way.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

“Oh, brother.”

Last month my virtual book club selected this novel, by English author Matt Haig, as our next read. I grumbled to myself. The woman who proposed this book described it with phrases like “science fiction” and “time travel” and “alternate universe.” Nothing I’d EVER choose to read on my own.

Two chapters in, I continued to complain about this New York Times bestseller. “I was right. This is not my kind of book.” But something kept me going.

We tend to ponder the what-ifs in life – or at least I do. But what if we let go and completely enjoy the hand we’re dealt. Reminiscent of the beloved holiday movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, the book follows Nora through a library of her regrets and mistakes.

And that’s the beauty of book clubs. They encourage us to branch out, expand our worlds, and fall in love with new sorts of books.

The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth

Before reading The Good Sister, I was not familiar with Australian author Sally Hepworth and her books. But I’m a fan now!

Everyone has a story…

In this psychological thriller, twins Rose and Fern seem to experience a normal, up-and-down sister relationship. One has control issues (sound like any sisters you know?!) and the other suffers from hypersensitivity to sound, light, and touch.

The novel kept me guessing the entire way. As it rolls along, the story weaves and flips and readers learn, “Maybe when it comes to sisters, boundaries are always a little bit blurry.”

Another Hepworth novel, The Mother-in-Law, is in my “to read” pile, and I hear wonderful reviews on this one too.

What are you reading right now? Me – The Children’s Blizzard by David Laskin. When was the last time you enjoyed a book you didn’t expect to like? Where are you craving to escape to?

You Have Permission to Remove Toxic People from Your Life

positive friends

One of my favorite Chicken Soup for the Soul stories is by Georgia Shaffer, who wrote about what happened when a “friend” drove her to chemo one day. Her friend spent the entire 50-minute drive relating painful stories about the people she knew who hadn’t done well with their cancer treatments.

“After previous treatments, I had never gotten sick,” says Georgia. “After that treatment, I was sick for two days.” That led to her epiphany: “The harsh reality is that I became painfully aware that some people are not positive and life giving. Rather, their negative or thoughtless interactions are draining and, in some cases, toxic.”

Georgia learned not to expose herself to people who were thoughtless or negative. That was difficult, because we’re all taught to be nice to everyone, and loyal to our friends. But if we want to be happy, we need to learn how to set clear boundaries.

Make Sure You Weed the Garden of Your Life

I love how Georgia described her view of this “friend management” process: “I had never realized that just like the weeds in a garden rob the flowers of vital moisture, nutrients and sunlight, so too the ‘weeds’ in my life were robbing me of the vital energy I needed to fight cancer and heal. I could not afford to allow interactions with negative people to steal the few resources I had left.”

It would take time to make her cancer go away, but Georgia could make that toxic friend go away right then and there! This is fabulous advice. We absolutely should weed the gardens of our lives on a regular basis, pulling out the negative so that everything that remains can thrive!

There’s a great quote from Mahatma Gandhi that sums this up beautifully: “I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.” We have the right to manage the friend side of our lives. No more dirty feet walking through our minds.

Friends Are Optional, Not Mandatory

How many friends do you have who don’t add value to your life? You might find that you are reducing the time you spend with them and viewing your get-togethers as obligations instead of relaxing, fun breaks. You might be saying, “I have this friend… and I have to call her… she’s always complaining… I don’t like talking to her… but I have to.”

Noelle Sterne wrote about this in our book about female friendships. She didn’t realize for a long time that she’d outgrown one friend’s negativity until she finally paid attention to the nagging feeling she’d get after their monthly lunch dates.

Meeting up with her toxic friend actually made Noelle sick. Her friend would do nothing but complain, and it was exhausting for Noelle. She would absorb her friend’s anger and get a headache. Like a love affair gone bad, Noelle understood that it was time to say goodbye.

Breaking Up Is Your Ticket to Happiness

I have finally gotten to the point, after several years of “weeding,” where I do not have toxic people in my life. Every single one of them is gone! What a relief.

Now, I look forward to seeing or, during the pandemic, talking to 100% of my friends!

The Greek playwright Euripides said, “It is a good thing to be rich, and it is a good thing to be strong, but it is a better thing to be loved of many friends.” So I guess he agreed – work is a good thing; staying strong through fitness is good; but the best thing is to have friends. And that means not spending one more precious minute with the wrong people.

How to Weed Your Own Garden of Life

Identify the “friends” you dread seeing or talking to. Discreetly reduce the amount of time you spend with them, and increase the time you spend with people who bring joy into your life.

Do you have friends who don’t bring you joy? Do you try to avoid them? How will you shift your precious “friend time” to the people who make you happy? Please share your thoughts with the community!

Fans Think Meghan Markle’s Eyeliner Is Reminiscent Of Princess Diana’s Makeup

Sunday night is basically the Super Bowl for Royal fans. It’s when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah airs, an event that’s sure to shake things up. When the first clip aired earlier this week, it was actually Meghan Markle’s eyeliner that resembles Princess Diana’s that has everyone talking. In a 1995 BBC Panorama interview, Diana wore bold black eyeliner and we have to say, Markle’s looks a lot like it.

The Duchess usually keeps her makeup pretty understated for public appearances, which is one reason this look caught so much attention. She’s wearing black kohl eyeliner along the entire waterline, something we haven’t seen her do. The same black color is on the upper lashline, making her whole vibe more dramatic. Of course, she looks beautiful but she always does.

It’s either a not-so-subtle nod to Princess Diana or entirely a coincidence. She is also wearing Diana’s diamond tennis bracelet so maybe fans are onto something.

It’s safe to say the Palace is not happy about Markle speaking her truth during this interview. “I don’t know how they could expect after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there’s an active role that the firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” she says to Oprah. Markle and Prince Harry are taking control over their own narrative in this interview, which is what Diana also did in 1995.

Not only is it possible that the Duchess of Sussex is giving a nod to Diana’s explosive interview, but she also could be starting a major 2021 trend. It hasn’t been since the late ’90s we’ve seen such dark eyeliner fulling lining the eyes. This just might seriously take off. In fact, you might have some photos from middle school where you tried to recreate the look. (Just me?)

Watch the entire Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special on Sunday, March 7.
