The Quickest, Easiest Makeup Routine for Older Women (VIDEO)

quickest makeup routine

Some of us who are over 50 enjoy the process of applying makeup and find it relaxing, therapeutic or just plain fun. Others of us, not so much. But no matter where we are on this continuum, there are certain times when we’re running late and need to get out the door in a hurry… or we simply prefer a quick and easy makeup routine.

So today I’ll share with you some ideas, makeup techniques and products that can help get us on our way in no time – without sacrificing a beautiful, finished look.

The Two Major Ways to Simplify and Speed Up Our Makeup Routine

In order to accomplish our goal of looking our best in the least amount of time, here’s what we can do. First, we can use products that are quicker and easier to use either due to the product’s formula or to the actual design of the product.

For instance, it’s faster to use a stick foundation, since all we need to do is simply remove the cap and apply it, than to use a liquid foundation that we have to pump out of the bottle and then apply. Second, we’ll focus on ways to multitask with products so one product is doing the work of two or three products.

How to Quickly and Easily Do Our Eyebrows

To look our best, filling in our brows is really a necessity for most of us. But this first step will vary a bit depending on what (if any) eyebrow challenges we have. If our eyebrows just need to be filled in a little bit, we can use a product that can multitask for us: a tinted eyebrow gel.

Tinted brow gels can not only apply color to our brows to help them look thicker and better, but they can also hold our brows in place. Brow gels vary a lot from brand to brand in terms of how much pigment they apply and how much hold they offer for wiry brow hairs so you may have to “audition” a few before you find what works best for you.

If you need a little more help, there are products that have fibers in them like Elf’s Wow Brow and Benefit’s Gimme Brow. In the video I’ll be using Benefit’s Gimme Brow since it has fibers built into the gel that can make my brows look fuller.

Still need some help? You may want to use an eyebrow pencil like Elf’s $2.00 Instant Lift Brow Pencil for two reasons: first it glides on quickly and easily and second, it has a thicker applicator so it’s possible to apply more product more quickly.

You may also want to consider using an eyebrow stencil. By simply filling in the blank area of the stencil, we can ensure a faster, easier and pretty flawless brow application technique.

How to Quickly and Easily Create Beautiful Eyes

To ensure that our eye products last longer, don’t crease or smudge and cover up any discoloration we might have on our eyelids, we can first quickly swipe on and blend out some eye shadow primer. All we need to do next is apply a cream or liquid eye shadow product.

Cream and liquid eyeshadows take less time to apply than powder eyeshadows which require brushes. And I recently found a cream eyeshadow product that multitasks as an eyeliner. It’s Tarte’s new QuickStick which is waterproof and comes in 6 different combinations of colors.

Normally, the Quicksticks are $25 each, but through this special package on QVC I was able to buy three Quick Sticks for only $39.00. And by the way, there’s also a three pack of these combination eyeshadows and liners in what they call “rose” colors.

I apply the latte tan in my crease – and slightly above it – and the brown eyeliner which is on the other end. And I’ll use the eyeliner on the outer 1/3 area below my eyes as well.

Some Nice, But Not Necessary, Additional Steps

These next steps you certainly don’t have to do, but they’re really quick and easy to do with these products. I apply the matte cream on my eyelids to brighten my lid area which will make my eyes look bigger. I also apply it under the arch of my brows to help lift my eyes as well as on the inner corner of my eyes to lighten up that area.

Then, I add a little of the dark brown eyeliner color on the outer corner and outer crease area of my eyes just to give them more emphasis. The eyeliner isn’t as creamy as the eyeshadow, but it’s definitely workable. To finish the eye area, I quickly curl my lashes and add some mascara.

The Quickest, Easiest Face Makeup

I’ve already done my skin prep, so my next step is to apply my sunscreen. I use Colorescience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield “Glow” which has a mineral SPF of 50. This is another multi-tasking product because I’m not only getting sunscreen protection, but I’m also adding some glow so I won’t need to apply any highlighter.

Next, to cancel out redness, age spots and all kinds of other interesting things on my face, I apply another multi-tasking product which is both a foundation and a concealer. It’s The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick from the new clean beauty brand Merit.

The beauty of these stick foundations is that we can just dot them on quickly and then use a brush or a sponge to blend them out. I like working this product into my skin by using a dampened makeup sponge. I also put some of this product on my finger and apply it around the outer edge of my lips to help keep my lipstick from feathering.

There are certainly a number of other good stick foundations as well – including the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Hydrating Foundation Stick, the Hourglass Foundation Stick and Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation stick.

Quick and Easy Ways to Add Color to Our Cheeks and Lips

To complete this look, I just add some cheek and lip color. For blush, I use a Merit product called Flush Bomb because the applicator ensures a really quick and easy application. All I need to do is take off the top and sweep the blush from the temple area down to within two finger widths from the nose.

And just to make it look seamless with my foundation, I like to take the makeup sponge I used earlier with the Merit foundation stick and just touch up along the edges of the blush.

Next, I’m going to apply a lipstick that doesn’t require lip liner to keep it from migrating into the fine lines around my lips: it’s Maybelline’s Superstay 24 Hour 2 Step Liquid Lipstick. If you’re not familiar with this product, it’s designed to be long wearing and doesn’t cake or flake.

It’s best to start by applying the lipstick in the middle of the lip since there’s quite a bit of product on the applicator when you pull it out – and then finish filling in the lip. Then it’s necessary to allow the lipstick to dry for two minutes before applying the ultra-conditioning balm on the other end of the lipstick. The balm can be reapplied throughout the day as often as needed.

Cover Girl also makes a product like this called Outlast All Day Lip Color with topcoat which they dub as “kiss-proof,” “food-proof,” and transfer resistant.

One Last Finishing Touch

For a quick final finishing touch, it’s helpful to take just a moment to press a very slightly damp makeup sponge all over the face to help all the products meld together seamlessly.

And we’re done!

What Motherly Advice Did You Receive About Money?

money advice

In the month of Mother’s Day, it is appropriate to think about and appreciate mothers as well as other women who play important roles in our lives. Women we admire have had an impact on us in many ways. I was in a women’s group discussion the other day, and they were sharing money memories. I noticed how many of the memories were tied to what they remember being told by a mother or grandmother.

Some Words of Advice

The messages were all over the board. One woman shared how her aging mother reminded her not to give away all of her inheritance. Another recalled always being told not to accept any money from a grandmother for helping around the house, “just be nice and do it because you care.”

And the young woman facilitating the discussion remembered how her mother cautioned her not to judge a woman she had just met just because she’s “rich.” Have you ever thought about documenting stories and advice you want to share either with your kids and/or grandchildren?

The Confidence Gap

We have talked in the past about how our childhood environment, memories, and stories usually had more impact than we often realized on our money habits later in life. Which can also be why a couple of recent financial industry surveys have identified a “confidence gap” between men and women.

Being in traditional roles, deferring in order to avoid conflict, and feeling that husbands knew more than they did, led many women to feel less confident than men.

Now’s the Time

The pandemic prompted the research and one survey, by UBS, found that 63% of women said that Covid affected how they now think about money. Another study by Fidelity revealed that 67% of women are now more engaged and putting more effort into managing their finances. Now is the time we need to make sure we have our financial house in order in case of an unexpected life event.

Expect the Unexpected

Sometimes, we need a wake-up call, a disruptor, a gentle (or not so gentle) reminder that life IS full of changes and unexpected events. In the spirit of always trying to find a silver lining (practicing Positive Intelligence here) and seeking an opportunity in every obstacle, we must acknowledge the lesson learned from the pandemic: Plan for the worst and expect the best.

Lessons Learned

One estate planning attorney I know listed 9 things he thought the pandemic taught us in one of his newsletters. I found the top three to be most helpful to think about:

Although It’s Never Too Early for Estate Planning, It Could Be Too Late

Sudden hospitalization from Covid is the exact “too late” example. If you don’t have power of attorney documents in place before you end up unresponsive in a hospital bed, life gets a lot more complicated when it comes to treatment and payment for care.

The Pandemic Has Taught Us Crisis Management

Thinking about something and actually taking action to put documents in place are two different things. We often cannot prevent the catastrophes that can occur in life, but we can put things in place that can protect our family should they occur.

You’re Not Too Old (Or Too Young) for Estate Planning

Less than half of Americans have a will in place. The percent is even lower for those under the age of 30. And yet those are often the ones starting families with a spouse and children to protect.

Worry Less

I am a fan of living in the moment, enjoying each day, and being mindfully grateful for the present. Yet I am also in the planning business because I think you can actually treasure daily life better once you have put the things you can control into place.

Putting things into place is what brings peace of mind. We can’t add another moment or month or year to our life by worrying. So, I believe in taking the worry out as much as you can by planning for things you can control and then shifting to a daily focus on gratitude instead.

Heed Your Own Advice

The other day, I was expressing my frustration to a colleague about having too many meetings on my calendar and feeling stressed. She calmly asked me who put those meetings on my calendar. It was me. She said “Ok, so stop doing that!” Ah, so easy to say but not so easy to do!

The good news is that it is all about what we decide. Our mind and our self-talk that leads to action is determined by us. Sometimes we need to mother ourselves and listen to our own advice!

What do you recall learning from your mother or grandmother about money? Has Covid prompted you to do anything you have been putting off? What advice can you share with our community? Let’s have a discussion.

Teresa Giudice’s Pink Velvet Corset Top and Patent Leggings

Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 11 Episode 13 Fashion

Teresa Giudice’s pink velvet corset top and patent leggings on her date with (then) new man Luis Ruelas was a sexy date night look. I will say, while I’m not a total velvet corset person, I LOVE a pair of patent leggings and am a little bummed that I didn’t get to bust them out as winter in Austin just ain’t as cold as it was up north. And just like my relocation has done for me, I feel like Teresa’s storyline is about to heat up when she opens that door at the start of next week’s episode.

Charli D’Amelio Chopped Her Hair & Looks Gorge For Summer

Is there anything better than getting your hair cut and/or colored, leaving the salon and feeling like a supermodel? No, we don’t think there is. But because of the current climate, seeing your hairstylist might not be as easy and getting your split ends cut off or your roots done might just be a quick in-and-out appointment without all the fun. That’s one reason why we’re so obsessed with actors and influencers who switch up their look on a dime. We’re jealous, sure, but it’s also aspirational AF. So, we’re rounding up the best celebrity hair makeovers of 2021 as they come so you can drool with us.

Though, it’s not just about drooling over these looks. Saving this page and referring back to it at the hair salon can help you decide if curtain bangs or a bob is right for you. Hairstylists actually love when you show them photos because they can get a real feel of the vibe you’re looking for and can adjust the look into something that suits your wants and needs. This goes for color, too. Did you ask for balayage when you really meant a shadow root? It’s easier to just give examples of what you want.

Some of these celebrity looks aren’t permanent. Stars love to play around with wigs, extensions and faux bangs. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Real or faux, we’re taking inspo from our favorites to figure out our next look for 2021 and beyond.

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

Look who’s blonde again! But it was only for a few hours. Kardashian was shooting an upcoming campaign either for KKW Beauty or Skims. She actually did get her eyebrows bleached and we actually loved the look with her naturally dark hair. But then when they put the blonde wing on it was like, whoa. Right before she left the studio, she snapped a photo showing us she’s back to brunette again, including the brows.

Sabrina Carpenter

Say goodbye to curtain bangs and hello to ‘Bardot bangs!’ Hairstylist Laurie Heaps gave Sabrina Carpenter piece-y bombshell bangs inspired by the iconic French star Brigitte Bardot. We’re obsessed.

Selena Gomez

In an Instagram photo promoting her beauty brand, Rare Beauty, in April 2021, Gomez showed off her newly dyed blonde hair. The picture saw the former Disney Channel star light blonde tresses and dark roots. She most recently dyed her hair blonde in 2017 in a color dubbed by her hairstylist Nikki Lee as “Nirvana Blonde.” Gomez’s 2021 color was also done by Lee and Riawna Capri. “We’ve been doing Selena’s color for over a decade now. She typically keeps it pretty natural, but this time she went for a big change. This blonde is unique to her as we had to make sure there was an equal balance of cool and warm for her skin tone. It’s an edgier look and perfect for summer,” the hairstylists said in a statement.

At the virtual launch of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier miniseries, Olsen debuted a totally different look from her usual copper-blonde hair. The bangs! The darker color! So chic.

Chrissy Teigen

We love how Teigen is playing around with wigs lately and experimenting with hair color. Although she only kept the silver shade for a day, we hope she brings it back. It looks amazing on her.

Kristen Bell

It seems like Bell is dressed up in character to film a TV show or movie but we’re loving these piecey bangs on her and we hope she keeps them up IRL.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

While filling us in on the Covid-19 relief package, AOC showed off her adorable new haircut. When followers commented saying they loved the chop, she replied, “Let’s not start another national crisis over it, right?”

Gigi Hadid

The model mom returned to the runway, walking in the Versace fall 2021 show. Hairstylist Panos Papandrianos wrote “Ginger for Gigi” on Instagram, making us believe he really did dye the model’s hair this gorgeous red shade for the occasion.

Olivia Rodrigo

The ‘Drivers License’ singer jumped on the curtain bang trend thanks to hairstylist Clayton Hawkins. They’re subtle but make a big difference in her look. One interesting note: Sabrina Carpenter has them too.

Lana Condor

The actress looks so great in this pastel pink wig, maybe she’s considering doing it IRL? “Get ‘Anyone Else But You; to 5 mil streams and I’ll keep it,” she wrote on Instagram. Though, she told STYLECASTER last year, “I don’t know that I’d ever dye dye my hair. I think my mom would kill me, you’d know?”

Ashley Graham

The model had everyone thinking maybe she got a pixie cut but her hair is actually the result of new growth post hair loss. “Postpartum baby hairs come through!” she wrote on Instagram.

Emma Roberts

A new color and cut for the birthday girl! “Emma always looks and feels her best blonde,” said her hairstylist and Nine Zero One co-founder Nikki Lee. “We decided to keep her a warm blonde and went for a ’90s supermodel vibe. With a new baby and a big birthday, we went out with a bang! Lisa Satorn added extensions for length and fullness. I kept her haircut free and flowing with piecey layers around the face.” Lee keeps her client’s hair healthy with the In Common 3 Step Treatment System ($105 at In Common).

Katy Perry

Why not start with one of the biggest hair chameleons? Though she’s been ultra-blonde for a while, we can’t help but miss a brunette Katy Perry. It’s classically chic and fits her personality. So, when we saw these photos of backstage at Jimmy Kimmel Live, we were so excited to see the long brown hair. But it seems it’s a wig and she’s already back to blonde.
