Sutton Stracke’s Lobster Print Pajamas

Sutton Stracke’s Lobster Print Pajamas

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 11 Episode 4 Fashion

Sutton Stracke’s lobster print pajamas came across our screens last night and now we are hooked. Normally when I think of wearing lobster, it’s because I’m a very messy eater that didn’t put on the complimentary bib. I never really thought of it as fashionable. But here we are. I mean what a fun and unique print for summer! Doesn’t it make you want to put it on and sit bedside vigorously face rolling seaside sipping some morning coffee? Either way it’s safe to say we are all ready to have our lobster and wear it too.

Sincerely Stylish,

Jess

Beauty Hacks: 7 Hair Dye Tips You Need to Know

Whether you’re enhancing your natural color or changing it completely, dyeing your hair is nothing short of transformative. It doesn’t just change the way you look, it changes the way you feel. Feeling confident about your hair can turn a bad day into a great day, or a great day into an excellent one. But if you color your hair yourself, you know that it comes with a whole host of problems—or it doesn’t have to be that way.

That’s right: We’ve put together our ultimate list of hair-dye tips. These brilliant hacks are going to change your color-loving life and take your hair game to the next level, guaranteed. Read on for what to avoid–and what to invest in–when it comes to coloring your own hair.

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Sally Beauty is a STYLECASTER sponsor, however, all products in this article were independently selected by our editors. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

1. Use the right developer.

You know how hair professionals are always telling you not to use box dye to make a major hair change? There’s a reason for that—and it’s because of the developer.

Developer is a totally crucial element in the hair coloring process. It comes in different strengths—usually referred to as “volumes”—which will tell you how much it can change your hair. Ten volume developer is the most gentle; it will let you deposit color only. Twenty volume developer will shift your hair one to two shades, while 30 volume developer will let you alter your hair three to four shades. You should never use anything stronger than this at home.

Box dyes come with developer and dye packaged together, but the developer is generally only 20 volume. This means that no matter what the color is on the box, you’ll only be able to make your hair one or two shades lighter (or darker) than its natural color. So if you have dark brown hair that you want to dye a sunny blonde, you’re going to end up with a muddy mess if you use a box. That weak sauce developer can only do so much!

Instead, if you’re looking to make a big change, get thee to an online beauty supply store where you can buy dye and developer separately. This means that you’ll be able to get the developer strength that will actually work to give you your dream hair color. Bonus: the dyes sold in beauty supply stores are usually professional quality, which means you’ll also get a richer, longer-lasting color.

2. Remove dye stains from skin.

Anyone living that bottle brunette life knows how annoying those dark dye stains left around your hairline and on your neck are. Sure, you could order these special dye-removing wipes—or you try mixing a tablespoon of olive oil with a blob of whitening toothpaste, apply it to a cotton ball and rub away. This gentle yet effective concoction might be just what you need, depending on the stain.

If you’re not into DIY-methods, these best-selling wipes dissolve away all stains and smell great. Plus, you nab 100 of them for less than 10 bucks..

3. Get the right amount of product.

This is probably a little “duh,” but if you have hair longer than your shoulders (or if it’s very thick), make sure you have twice as much hair dye on hand. Whether this means buying two boxes or mixing up a double batch of developer and dye, you just want to be sure you don’t run out halfway through. Having a half-dyed head is so not the look.

This two-pack of box dye will help ensure you have enough to work with.

4. Cover your roots…with makeup.

We’ve all been there: life gets so busy that you don’t have enough time to redo your color, and crazy visible roots are the result. To hide them temporarily, blend those suckers in with eyeshadow.

If your roots are darker than the rest of your hair (blondes, we see you), focus on softening the harsh line between your natural color and the dye. Take a powder eyeshadow the same shade as your roots and, using a fluffy, medium-sized eyeshadow brush, gently stroke the color about an inch out from your roots. This will help blend the two colors together in a really natural way.

If your roots are lighter—or a different shade—than your dyed hair, use a powdered eyeshadow the same color as your dye job. After styling your hair, gently brush the shadow anywhere that your roots are visible, making sure not to get too much color on your scalp or skin.

Once you’ve hidden or blended your roots, seal the shadow with a fine misting of light-hold hairspray. Your roots are neatly concealed, and will stay that way until you brush (or wash) the shadow out.

Buy: Style Edit Root Touchup $33.99

For stubborn grays, a targeted hair powder like this one from Style Edit binds with your hair for maximum, long-lasting coverage.

5. Metal is not your friend.

Using a metal bowl, mixing spoon or clips to hold back your dye-slathered hair? That’s a serious no-no. The metal and the developer can interact, causing the color to oxidize and change. In rare instances, this reaction can be so severe that hair breaks off—and nobody wants a chemical haircut. Use all-plastic everything when you’re coloring, and your hair will thank you.

ATB.

Buy: ATB Plastic Hair Coloring Set $5.99

This plastic three-piece set comes with everything you need to safely color your hair at home.

6. Invest in a color-refreshing gloss.

A toning gloss is a semi-permanent color that helps reduce unwanted tones. Simply shake it up, then apply to damp hair. Let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse well and condition. Voila! Your color is perfectly refreshed.

Buy: DpHue Gloss+ $35

Don’t balk at the price tag, because this product actually functions as a hybrid semi-permanent hair dye plus gloss and conditioning treatment. Basically, it’s your one-stop shop for at-home color maintenance.

7. The best home brow- and lash-dyeing advice…

Don’t. We’re serious: never ever under any circumstances should you do this yourself. Your eyes are so precious, and the risk of damaging them with chemicals is just too high. Go to a professional if you want this done. If you can’t, there are a myriad of better ways to groom your brooms at-home than apply hair dye to them.

Glossier’s Best Sellers Are On Sale—But Not For Long

Glossier didn’t plan for this sale. In fact, Glossier’s current Friends & Family sale—or as the brand calls it Friends of Glossier—idea started as a bit of an accident. A few months ago, a FRIENDSOFGLOSSIER discount code was leaked and fans went crazy buying all they could before the brand turned it off. It was sort of a good thing, though. Usually, Glossier’s big sale is just around the holidays. Now, a mid-year sale is born.

From now until June 14, the real Friends of Glossier sale features 20 percent off sitewide. Don’t worry—this time you don’t need a code to get the deals. Even better, the brand put together bundles and they have a retail value of up to 38 percent off. So, if you’ve been dying to try my current favorite cleanser, the Cleansing Concentrate, now’s the time to grab it.

If it’s makeup you’re after, I’d go for the new Ultralip and everyone’s favorite eyebrow-defining Brow Flick. There’s so much to choose from but I got you started with my must-haves, below.

What You Learn When You Trust Your Gut: Exploring The Power of Intuition

Trust-Your-Gut

Many unexpected gifts come at midlife and beyond, and one of them is a deeper trust in ourselves. After all, we’ve been living in our bodies for a long time – who knows us better than we do?

I believe intuition plays a part in our deeper trust. You just have to listen. You have to trust your gut.

Midlife in some ways is similar to adolescence. Unlike previous generations, most of us see many years ahead filled with infinite possibilities and new beginnings. When intuition is allowed to speak, we can narrow our choices to ones that nourish us and allow us to grow.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Leaving an unfulfilling job, selling your home, relocating to another part of the country, leaving an unhappy marriage, venturing into marriage and making health care decisions are just some of the issues that arise at midlife.

How does your intuition factor into your decisions? Do you believe your intuition’s messages have value? Where in your body does your intuition present itself – your gut, your heart or elsewhere? Which speaks louder – your head or your heart? How do you use this information when making a big decision?

As a holistic nutritionist, my work with women who want to eat well and take better care of themselves is intrinsically linked to intuition. When you know yourself on a deep level, you know what you need, and that includes food.

You connect with your body to know how much is enough. You know when your body is energized by the food you eat and when your food choices make you feel sluggish or inflamed. For more on this topic, visit my blog post.

When we talk intuition, we use the term “gut feeling.” For most of us, the intuitive feelings we get manifest in the belly. Have you ever said “I just can’t stomach that” when you encounter a situation that doesn’t feel right for you? We instinctively know what is right for us – or wrong – we just have to learn to honor it. Our intuition is a reliable guide.

An Exercise for You

Tapping into your intuition takes practice. You need to get away from your “thinking” self and get into your “feeling” self. I have an exercise for you to try:

Find a 15-minute time span where you are sure you won’t be interrupted. Fill a water bottle with warm water and lie down on your bed in a darkened room. Place the water bottle over your belly. With no preconceived notions of what might come up for you, lie there and just be. Feel the warmth of the water on your belly. Let your mind relax and trust it will give you whatever insight you need.

It may be nothing but relaxing or it may be profound. All you have to do is be there.

After you do this, take some time to reflect on your experience.

Going Forward

Work with your intuition. Noted gynecologist Dr. Christiane Northrup suggests intuition becomes more powerful after menopause because we no longer put energy into our cycles, freeing up energy and focus. Life has its rhythms and intuition is a powerful rhythmic element of later life.

It’s what leads many older women to make major changes.

My Intuitive Breakthrough

In my late 40s, I felt restless in my career. I was a telecommunications manager at Harvard Medical School and though it was interesting work, it did not feel authentic to me. What drew me to accept the position was the idea that I’d be in the midst of some amazing medical minds, as I thought I had an interest in medicine.

But what slowly emerged for me was that medicine was not what interested me; it was healing that had meaning for me. I wondered how we heal. How is it different from medicine?

These feelings emerged from deep inside me and led me to study Chinese medicine and holistic nutrition. The more I studied, the stronger I felt that this was my authentic purpose or calling. I resigned from my job at Harvard. I listened to my gut 20 years ago and have not had a single moment of regret. It was truly my intuition that allowed me to trust in this life-changing decision.

When it comes to making decisions, do you trust your gut? Do you have a story you can share? How has your intuition influenced your life and the choices you make, both large and small? Let’s start a conversation.
