No one panic—but KKW Beauty is going dark. The brand announced today the website would be shutting down. But it’s not forever. Both KKW Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics are having a big relaunch. As for Kim Kardashian West, her brand posted a note from the star to Instagram that reads: “It all started with a contour kit and expanded to eyes, lips, body, and many incredible collections over the last four years.”

August 1 at midnight the site is shutting down “to come back with a completely new brand,” her note continues. “With new formulas that are more modern, innovative, and packaged in an elevated and sustainable new look. I’m excited to continue to develop and expand my product range and for you to finally be able to experience it the way that I have always envisioned.” Soon, instead of different websites for makeup and skin, it’ll all be under one e-commerce site. “Thank you so much for being on this incredible journey with me and I promise we won’t be gone for too long,” reads the note.

Many are speculating that the beauty mogul is dropping the West from her name and her brand. But realistically, that’s not why the entire brand is going dark. It’s probably the same situation as Kylie Cosmetics. Last week, COTY announced the relaunch of Kylie Cosmetics with “new and improved clean and vegan formulas” along with refreshed packaging. A brand-new website is said to be coming July 15 that will hawk both Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin for the first time.

We love the idea of new and improved formulas. The best makeup brands continue to innovate and refresh products over the years. “I’m so proud to relaunch Kylie Cosmetics with all new formulas that are clean and vegan,” said Kylie Jenner in a statement. “Innovation has come far in the past few years. When creating this line, it was so important to me to commit to using clean ingredients across the board, but to never sacrifice performance. My new lip kit has 8-hour wear and is so comfortable on the lips, and all my new formulas are amazing. I’m excited for everyone to try the new products.”

When I received the results of my recent bone scan it wasn’t good news. I’ve always been physically active, but I am slightly built, a major risk factor for osteoporosis.

While drugs are effective for some, side effects are severe for others. At 65 years young, the researcher in me immediately started searching for some natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals.

I learnt a great deal about osteoporosis and natural therapies – information that surprised and inspired me.

A Plant That Sets Bones?

Cissus Quadrangularis (CQ) is a succulent perennial herb, growing in many of the world’s tropical regions. Different parts of the plant are utilised as herbal remedy in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat a range of conditions. These include healing fractures and strengthening bones.

Not surprisingly, the English translation of CQ is bone setter plant.

Recent research is investigating the viability of using CQ as a therapy for western disorders, including osteoporosis. As osteoporosis is a major public health concern, any natural supplement that could improve bone health without adverse side effects is of great interest.

CQ contains high levels of calcium and phosphorous in the stem. Both these minerals are essential for bone growth.

A systematic review (considered the gold star of research studies) has summarised the findings and quality of existing research, and found that CQ could accelerate bone healing with certain fractures.

However, before you rush out to buy the powder or try CQ, be aware that as yet little effort has been made to assess its purity, efficacy and quality through scientific screening.

To date, it appears safe for short term use (1-10 weeks), but there’s limited data on long term safety.

High Intensity Loading Exercise for People with Osteoporosis?

Keeping bones healthy requires the right sort of exercise. While I was aware of this aspect, I hadn’t realised that yoga (even advanced Asana practice) and walking are both low intensity exercise. They’re not sufficient for building bone.

New exciting research at Griffith University in Australia counters previously accepted wisdom in finding that high intensity loading can be safe and effective, even for people with Osteoporosis

The important point to note is that given an increased risk of fractures, the specialised Onero Program for osteoporosis developed from this research must be supervised under the right conditions with a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist.

Ongoing data collection suggests the program increases bone mass with results showing that 86% of participants increased bone at the lumbar spine and 69% at the hips.

Popeye the Sailor Man Was Wrong About Spinach

Do you remember the cartoon character Popeye the sailor man? The tough spinach eating sailor encouraging children to eat up their spinach to have super strength.

Yes, it’s true spinach contains many nutrients and high levels of calcium. But it’s also high in Oxalates. As Oxalates bind to minerals like calcium, they can prevent calcium absorption in the digestive tract.

So, it’s best not to rely on spinach in a daily calcium count, since most of it won’t be absorbed by the body, especially in the raw uncooked form. The evidence suggests that the Oxalate content can be lowered if the Spinach is cut into 1cm pieces, then cooked in boiling water for two minutes with the juice squeezed out before eating.

When I am single, I reflexively sign up for a dating app, or three. Why would I ever want my flirting skills to get rusty? I don’t know about all of you, but for me it’s soothing and fun to peruse profiles, kind of like going to a cocktail party where you know no one, but everyone is friendly and receptive. And, I feel less alone, because there’s something to do on a Saturday night besides the laundry!

Of course, when I’m in a partnership, I fantasize about the fun of being single. My house can maintain disaster zone status, cereal is eaten for dinner… This woman goes where she wants, with whomever she wants, spending money like it’s going out of style (more or less…).

When I’m single, it’s hard fighting the feeling that my life is lacking in some important way. However, eureka! Recent research suggests that partnered or married people are not necessarily that much happier.

On a 5-point scale, married people more often rated their happiness a “4”, while long time single people averaged scores between 3.7 and 3.82. So, there!

But for those of us who prefer being part of a couple, we know that finding someone suitable is something over which we have little control. So, learning to be single and truly happy is downright mandatory if one is to live a full life.

Being Single May Not Be as Bad as I Thought

Luckily, there is a plethora of articles and books on how to be happy and fulfilled as a single person. Many of them are list oriented, as in “Nine Ways Being Single Can Improve Your Life.” In sifting through multiple articles, the advice seems to boil down to a handful of absolutes.

Make and keep good friends, participate in group activities, be grateful for and mindful of the good things in life. I had no idea that angst about being single is so prevalent that the condition has spawned articles and studies galore.

Something else that pops up in these lists is that being single appears to provide more opportunities for personal growth and self-awareness. Writers and researchers talk about the emotional and psychological energy devoted to your partner and “the relationship” when you are with someone.

And let’s not underestimate the energy drain of thinking, talking, and emotional processing. When you are single, this energy can be directed to personal fulfillment.

Truth be told, I usually skip over advice like this. After all, I have been in therapy for what seems half a lifetime and skimmed far too many self-help books. So according to me, I have known myself for many years now, what more can there possibly be?

And yet..

The Legacy of Growing Up in the 1950s

More recently, I’ve noticed that my self-esteem automatically defaults to the stance that I should look like a 50s’ pin up star. My mother was movie star gorgeous; my father looked like Frank Sinatra, so somehow I think I have come by this honestly.

I was good looking enough in my youth, but now my reptilian brain freaks out when it sees the wrinkles, sages, bags, and cellulite. This wasn’t supposed to happen, ha ha.

New Challenges

So apparently, I’m lucky enough to have more internal battles to fight. This tenacious and deeply buried core belief needs to be vanquished! Nice to know this poodle dog is about to learn some new tricks.

Now I am very busy (maybe even on a Saturday night?) metamorphosing into a woman who “looks good for her age,” who is the matriarch of a pretty cool tribe (made up of ex-wives, ex-husbands, new boyfriends and girlfriends, children, grandchildren, etc.). Wish me luck, please!
