5 Ways to Reconnect with Your Most Authentic Self at 60 and Beyond

find your wild woman

When I was growing up, I was told that women over 40 should keep their hair short and wear sensible clothing that was appropriate for a mature woman. The idea was that it wasn’t “proper” to draw attention to yourself and that you needed to act your age.

It was only as I grew older that I began to really challenge this belief and found myself feeling quite shocked by the idea that I had to wear certain clothes or look a certain way in order to fit in with someone else’s notion of what a “mature” woman should dress, be, or look like.

And so, at the fabulous age of 61, I am so glad that I didn’t listen to their advice. I wear my hair long, wild and free and my clothing can only probably be described as romantically bohemian with a touch of faerie! I adore long ruffled skirts that kiss the floor as I walk and “off the shoulder” tops that wrap themselves around my body like a warm hug.

I am nothing like the image of a 60-year-old that shaped my early upbringing and for that I’m grateful. I’m not sure if my mother and other family members would have embraced my choices; however, I secretly like to think that they would have wanted to join me in the freedom we now have at age 60 and beyond.

Reclaim Your Power, Passion and Purpose!

It shows that we’ve come a long way in breaking the old traditional taboos of ageing and what it means to grow older. Rather than sliding into a background of quiet conformity, 60 year olds – everywhere – are reclaiming their passion, power and purpose and embodying their inner wild woman.

However, reclaiming and embodying your inner wild woman is not so much about the way that you look or the clothes that you wear. It is always and completely about the way that you feel.

The concept of our inner wild woman can feel challenging to get a hold of. She often lives in the undiscovered landscape of our lives, just waiting patiently for the day or the moment when we will see her and connect with this part of ourselves. She has always been there. She is timeless, ancient and full of inner knowing.

She feels deeply and thinks even deeper. She follows the call of her Soul and steers her life by the whispers of her heart. She is our darkest night and our brightest dawn, and she is totally and irrevocably true to herself.

As Clarissa Estes Pinkola writes, “Within every woman is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing.”(Women Who Run with the Wolves)

Meeting Your Inner Wild Woman

You may already know who she is; that wild woman within you. And although you may not have been formally introduced, you may have had glimpses of her your entire life. She is found in your deepest desires and is not afraid to stand up for what makes her truly feel alive.

She is real, authentically who she is, untamable and sovereign unto herself. She is the part of us that has had enough of playing small or shrinking back, trying to fit into someone else’s version of our life. She is the one who longs to dance to the beat of her own drum and shake free anything that does not align with her Soul.

She is indomitable, courageous, fearless and in touch with her deepest desires. She is you. She is me. She is all of us. She is wise beyond time and is probably best summed up in the words of the Helen Reddy song, “I am Woman, hear me roar!”

Discovering and Reconnecting with Your Inner Wild Woman

Discovering and reconnecting with your inner wild woman can feel a little scary and takes courage. If, like me, you experienced “rules” of how you should be and look at a certain age, embodying your inner wild woman can feel like a reckless and wanton thing to do.

This is only because we don’t fully know or understand her. We may have spent a lifetime numbing her passion and creativity with food. We may have tried to suppress her buoyant and vital energy by over working, people pleasing, or trying to be all things to all people.

In our youth, we may have found ourselves apologising for being too loud, too large, not large enough, too bright, too dramatic, too sensitive, too quiet or simply too strange.

My wild woman slipped in through the half door of a forgotten dream and there she stayed, patiently waiting for the day that I would feel the intoxicating air of longing for a life that was deeper, more soulful, fulfilling and born of magic.

At 60, we have traveled through our life’s journey thus far. We know what we love. We know what doesn’t work for us. We have experienced the highs, the lows and the many emotions in between. Our shapes may have changed, our hair may reflect a different colour, we have experienced loss and we have risen to greet another day.

And all along, our inner wild woman has been with us, waiting for the day that we would come “home” to our authentic selves.

Five Beautiful Ways to Reconnect with Your Authentic Self

Romance Your Body

Notice sensations and emotions as they pass through your body. Become curious about their message. Treat your body with love and kindness. If you experience pain or illness, try connecting with the pain you feel and reassure it as if it were a small child that you were comforting.

Follow Your Creativity

The wild woman archetype loves to create. It doesn’t matter what she creates, it simply matters that she does it. You might want to paint, write, draw, dance, cook or sew. Whatever makes you feel alive, allow it to thrive in your creativity.

Don’t Die with Your Song Still Inside of You

What is it that you long to do, have, experience or be? Are there any forgotten dreams that need to be resurrected and brought into the light of day? Is there a burning passion still yearning to be lived? If so, take this time to nurture your dreams and allow them to be born. Whatever is inside of you, give it the freedom to be lived!

Wear Clothes That Reflect Who You Are

What does your body long to wear? Take some time to craft your own unique style. Who are you now? What clothes make you feel gorgeous? What colours entice you? Are there clothes that you always wanted to wear but didn’t? Maybe it’s time to explore these now?

I Shop Online For A Living & These Are The 8 Things I’m Buying In September

I’m not trying to brag too much here, but I’m pretty certain that I have one of the coolest, most enviable jobs around. Reason being? I scour the internet for the best shopping deals and coolest trends every day, and get to test out so many amazing new clothing pieces, beauty products, and home goods. I’ve been a shopping writer and editor for a few years now, and have developed a knack for determining which products are worth every penny, and which ones are better left in the virtual cart.

This month is all about stepping into the fall comfortably. Stores like Target are beginning to roll out their fall home lines and sites are seeing increased search interest in moisturizing and clarifying products (makes sense, given that temps are sadly going to plummet and the air is about to dry). Amazon’s Movers & Shakers page—a section that shows what items are rising in popularity—is filled to the brim with soothing lotions and oils. Google is being inundated with “fall fashion” inquiries and people on Pinterest are starting to search for pumpkin recipes and candles once more.

My shopping carts fit the bill for these fall trends perfectly. I’m shopping for nourishing face masks, sleek platform loafers, and cozy throw blankets to start my cold weather months off the right way. Check out the eight essentials I’ll be buying this September below:

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Target is a STYLECASTER sponsor, however, all products in this article were independently selected by our editors. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

Neutrogena Anti-Residue Clarifying Shampoo

I don’t know what it is about spending so much time indoors, but ever since the pandemic began, my scalp has been a mess. I’ve experienced more dandruff and dryness these past two years than I have collectively my entire life. My one saving grace? This simple clarifying shampoo. It removes icky product build-up from dry shampoos and conditioners without stripping my hair of its natural oils. For best results, I swap this product with my typical purple shampoo once or twice a week.

Sam Edelman Laurs Platform Loafer

Sam Edelman Laurs Platform Loafer

I’m of the belief that if you have a good pair of loafers, you can wear them across every season. I love the androgynous vibe of the shoes. They’re punk and sexy at the same time. Unfortunately, most quality pairs are a few hundred dollars. That’s why, when I found these Sam Edelman ones, I squealed out loud with glee. The Olivia Rodrigo-esque shoes platforms come in black, tan, or green and pair them with practically every dress or pair of pants you’ve got hanging in your closet.

Cable Knit Chenille Throw Blanket - Threshold

Cable Knit Chenille Throw Blanket

There is no problem that curling into a cozy throw blanket can’t solve. This is why at the beginning of every fall season, I gift myself a new one. I love the look of all things cable knit. The sophisticated design makes tops and accessories like this blanket, which is just $25, look so much more expensive than they are.

Nest Pumpkin Chai Candle

It’s time for society to pass the point of calling everything pumpkin scented or flavored basic. Let’s all just agree that pumpkin anything is delicious and should be celebrated, not mocked. This September, I’m going all in on candles. Nest’s Pumpkin Chai candle is everything I want to cover my space. The spice scent is decadent without being overwhelming. Plus, the candle itself is a warm orange. You can’t find a better fall candle than this.

Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer

Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer

I’m fairly certain that this clever coffee invention was made for me. It ensures that slow sippers (moi) won’t ever have to deal with lukewarm drinks ever again. To use it, all you have to do is flip the switch on, and the base will warm your cup’s bottom and keep the liquids inside nice and hot. I’ll be keeping this accessory on my WFH desk at all times.

Free People Picnic Sweater Romper

Free People Picnic Sweater Romper

This fall, I don’t want to wear anything that requires more than a little effort to put on. Jeans? Absolutely not. A button-up shirt? You’ve got to be kidding. Heels? Please, don’t make me laugh. But this sweater romper? Sign me tf up. It’s like wearing a stylish and socially acceptable set of onesie pajamas. I plan to keep it on at home during work and lounge time, then dress it up when I go out with tights and combat boots. It’s such a simple look, but those are the best ones to style again and again.

PÜR 4-in-1 Sculpting Concealer

PÜR 4-in-1 Sculpting Concealer

There are very few people I trust with makeup advice. One of them is Rachel Nussbaum, InStyle’s beauty writer. She knows everything there is to know about the ingredients that comprise popular foundations, hairsprays, etc. Her vast knowledge comes with a lot of heartbreak. She often tells me (and her readers) of the harmful irritants that are too-often included in name brand products, so when there’s a brand she approves of, I take note. Rachel told me that Pur is on her list of A-Okay concealers, so I’m hopping on this 4-in-1 color corrector faster than a kid on a trampoline. It comes in 16 shades, costs under $25, and is free from the nastiness of phthalates, aluminum, and talc.

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Face Mask

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

I’m a writer living in New York. Translation: I don’t have an income that gives me the means to spend hefty amounts of cash on skincare (nor do I want to). Spending close to $50 on a face mask would physically and emotionally pain me if I didn’t already know and love this one so much. I’ve been using Summer Fridays’ Jet Lag Mask for years. It saved my skin when I was on Accutane, and continues to be my secret to non-greasy hydration. I’d say I have to stock up on it about every five months, and this September is one of them. I’ll be using it to prevent cracked winter skin, and before date nights or brunches to give me a Hailey Bieber-esque glow.

Garcelle Beauvais looked hot in her black cutout top talking to her matchmaker. And she wasn’t the only one looking hot judging by her potential suitor. But something cool about this top is that it would also look great with no pants. You know because it duals as a dress (come on guys). Which in my opinion means this top/dress is the perfect match for all of us ❤.
