How Two Female Founders Created Magic in the Form of Trendy Nail Polish Colors

It’s extremely hard to start a beauty brand and it’s even harder if you’re a woman or POC. That’s why it’s especially important to support each other. It’s part of why Olive & June teamed up with Golde. Well, Sarah Gibson Tuttle of Olive & June and Trinity Mouzon of Golde wanted to work together and build each other up, but also provide both communities with a really cool product. What they ended up with is Olive & June-quality nail polish with shades inspired by Golde’s cult-fave wellness products. It’s a collab that no one saw coming but is so happy it did.

On paper, the female founders are very different. Mouzon started Golde in her apartment in Brooklyn, New York. Gibson Tuttle is a Los Angeles woman through and through. But at the root of their brands is accessible self-care and building a community — which they both have in spades. And it helps that they were both huge fans of each other’s brands before they met.

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

“It was an incredible friendship from the very beginning. It turns out SGT was already a really big fan of Golde and is a self-professed matcha addict,” Mouzon tells STYLECASTER. They met through a mutual friend just two years ago and starting talking about a collab in the fall of 2020. They connected that quickly. “I feel like we’ve spent so much virtual time together,” Mouzon says. “It was like, ‘matcha latte nail polish color? When is that happening?’”

Gibson Tuttle helped walk Mouzon through the complicated fundraising stage and lent her support whenever possible. She’s been through it with her own 8-year-old brand. “Because I was such a massive fan of the brand, I thought, ‘how could we be helpful to each other?’” Gibson Tuttle says. “But also so excited to meet this amazing founder I admired from afar.”

“The female founders in my life, who are farther along in their journey, helped me so much,” she continues. “And when I meet someone who is earlier in their journey than I am, I really try to be super intentional about giving them all of my knowledge, everything I know.” They also connected over their passion for self-care and not in the way where you have to become a minimalist TikToker who makes all their own meals in their spotless kitchen while wearing a crop top. Instead, they appreciated the way each other tackle an at-home routine.

“I came into the relationship, like, haven’t painted my nails in three years, stressed out founder, if I managed to brush my teeth in the morning it was a miracle,” Mouzon says. “I’m really on top of the self-care piece from a superfoods perspective but got this new visibility into the value of building a habit around painting your nails and taking care of yourself throughout your routine.”

“Self-care should not feel like a chore,” Gibson Tuttle adds. “The whole thing should be fun and enjoyable. That’s the magic of Golde and Olive & June.” That means, even if you sleep in your makeup (don’t, though) and wear the same pair of sweats for two days, you can still make a superfood latte and paint your nails without becoming a different person or spending a ton of money.

“It doesn’t have to be a massive investment or this new thing that’s confusing or weird,” Mouzon says. “It should just be about doing the stuff that makes you feel good.” What feels good right now is drooling over these three nail polish shades. They’re the perfect bridge between summer brights and moody winter hues. And that green? It’s going to sell out quickly as green is trending everywhere.

Glow Nail Polish

This papaya orange shade was inspired by Golde’s Papaya Bright Face Mask. “It’s almost a bit of a neutral-nude on me,” Mouzon says. “It’s not too intense. So, there’s something for everyone.”

Energize was created after the color of the perfect creamy matcha latte. “It glows on your nails,” Gibson Tuttle says.

4 Secrets to Creating Naturally Healthy Comfort Foods

Now that fall has arrived in North America and the holidays are on the horizon, our eating habits tend to change. I know this is the season when I crave gooey casseroles, steaming drinks and (unfortunately) lots of carbs.

This is a natural process. After all, our primitive ancestors had to prepare for short, cold days by bulking up. Much as bears and other mammals do prior to hibernation, our human bodies signal the need for additional calories – even though most of us have a warm and toasty place to get in out of the cold.

The challenge, then, is not to fight the urge for comfort food, but to rethink how we prepare dishes and what ingredients we use in them. Go ahead and indulge yourself, but use these tips to be smarter about it.

Forgo the Pasta

Pasta and noodles made with white flour don’t do much for us other than pack on the pounds since they are carbohydrate-intense. But if you are craving a tuna noodle casserole and nothing else will do, there are healthier substitutions for the pasta, such as these.

Cooked quinoa – Make it fluffy, not crunchy, for best results.

Hash browns – Potatoes get a bad rap, but if you are going to eat carbs, they are much more nutritious than white pasta or rice.

Spaghetti squash – Separate the strands from the peel with a fork and blot out the moisture on paper towels for best results.

Zoodles (zucchini “noodles”) – These are easy to make with a spiralizer, which is a kitchen tool I highly recommend having on hand.

Shirataki noodles – These are zero calorie noodles made from glucomannan starch. I’ve seen them at Wal-Mart, as well as health food stores, so they are fairly easy to find.

Cooked white or pink beans or chickpeas – Their bland taste and creamy texture goes well with just about any protein, especially ground beef, turkey or chicken.

Cooked Bulgur wheat – Want an easy way to prepare it? Add a cup of bulgur wheat to a bowl and cover with hot water. Cover the bowl and let it sit while you prepare the rest of your meal.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with new ingredients. What makes a casserole so comforting is its combination of protein, soft carbs and creamy sauce. By substituting another soft food of similar size for the pasta, you can save calories as well as carbs.

Skip the Heavy Sauces

Speaking of that creamy sauce… To remake that tuna casserole (or lasagna or gravy or any saucy calorie bomb you crave), ditch the canned cream of chicken soup or heavy cheese sauce. Sauces provide a wonderful mouth feel. They are the glue that holds together all the lovely ingredients in your dish. But sauces that are made from animal fats, cheese and white flour aren’t the healthiest choice. Instead, try some of these substitutions:

Cashew sauce – I use this on almost everything! Yes, it has fat, but it’s the healthy kind of fat, from nuts.

Coconut milk – Use the full fat version. Again, this is a healthy fat. It’s fairly thick and blends well with nearly any type of herbs or spices. Try this Burst Tomato Cream Sauce for a bit of inspiration.

Tofu and mayonnaise – I use equal parts, blended with a stick blender, as a substitute for sour cream. Sour cream is the base of many sauces, such as Beef Stroganoff.

Creamy cauliflower sauce – This is made much the same way as cashew sauce, only with cooked cauliflower and a bit of milk to thin it out.

Squash is Your Friend

This is the season when squash of all varieties is abundant – from acorn to pumpkin, butternut to spaghetti. All types of squash are nutrient-rich and high in vitamins. Squash with orange flesh are even better; they are great sources of carotenoids and Vitamin A. While they tend to be quite starchy, they provide good carbs which can actually help regulate insulin.

Here are some ways to use squash as an ingredient in your favorite comfort dishes:

Hollow out a round squash and stuff it (meat, brown rice, beans) – or fill it with a hot, creamy soup. Small pumpkins, acorn, Hubbard and kabocha squash work particularly well.

Slice a zucchini squash in strips and use it in place of the pasta in lasagna. Here’s a recipe for a low carb, gluten-free lasagna recipe with zucchini.

Serve mashed squash, such as butternut, in place of mashed potatoes as a nutritious side dish. Even with a pat of butter on top, this is still a very healthy dish.

Take a long squash (such as yellow or zucchini), slice it lengthwise and hollow out the seeds to make a “boat.” It can now be used much like a hot dog bun. Try filling it with chili and topping with a sprinkle of cheese.

Squash makes a delicious, creamy soup that needs no dairy. A drizzle of coconut milk and sprinkle of nutmeg on top finishes it off with a touch of elegance.

Some Final Tips for Healthy Comfort Foods

Finally, here are a few additional ways to cut the fat, carbs and calories in your favorite comfort foods.

Add extra veggies to every dish. It’s easy to incorporate a bit of shredded zucchini, riced cauliflower, minced bell peppers and other vegetables in things like spaghetti sauce, chili, stews, meatloaf and more. This cuts down on fat and calories while adding nutrients.

If you simply must have cheese, opt for the harder varieties, such as Parmesan. They are less likely to cause stomach upset and are usually lower in fat than softer cheeses.

Opt for the whole grain version of your favorite carbs, such as bread, rice and cereal.

Try a vegetarian version of your favorite dish. Tacos made with roasted veggies are very yummy. You could also make an entire casserole without meat. A crustless quiche with mushrooms and asparagus is another idea. More veggies = better nutrition.

Need a sweet fix? Reach for dark chocolate instead of indulging in a piece of cake or pie.

I hope you’ve found these ideas for creating healthy comfort foods helpful. The holidays are coming soon and I want you to be in the best health of your life so you can enjoy them! What are your favorite comfort foods? Please join the conversation and share your secrets for enjoying comfort food.

11 Awful Opening Lines You Need to Delete from Your Online Dating Profile

awful dating line openers

In my professional work as a dating coach, I’ve discovered the effect that opening lines can have on someone searching for a partner. Indeed, the wrong words, phrases and photos can actually push people away. That’s why I firmly believe they should never be included in your online profile!

They may be items you discuss with your BFFs and siblings, but they will come back to haunt you with your online dating profile and quickly reduce your chances of success!

Now, if you think these are made up, I beg to differ. I’ve seen them while browsing dating sites, and I’ve seen them from my own clients – which is why one of my jobs is to write online dating profiles that are actually meant to do you good.

And, when it comes to online dating profiles, I’ve realized that intelligence has nothing to do with writing a good paragraph about yourself. In fact, there are times I feel there is an inverse correlation between intelligence and online dating.

So, what are those never evers?

“I Can’t Believe I’m Doing Online Dating”

Well, you are, along with millions in the US and around the world. This line serves absolutely no purpose and can also result in singles reading, rolling their eyes and thinking, “Well, I am! What’s wrong with this?” Bottomline, it does not make you look cool or like a catch – just arrogant.

“I Want Someone with No Emotional Baggage and Emotionally Available”

My first thought is that you have been dating losers! My second thought is that you are a self-help book junkie. By the time we hit our 50s and 60s, of course we had relationships and life experience… and emotions.

But what is up with the phrase emotionally available? It’s not a positive phrase and my inclination is to think you have dated many high maintenance people. And, no, no one wants high maintenance.

“Nascar to Opera. Burgers to Foie Gras.”

Read: I am desperate, and I can be anything you want me to be! I am a commoner but could slip easily into the Royal Family. That’s not the type of impression you really want to make. You have your personality and interests – talk about them!

“I’m an Aries and Tend to Be Attracted to Virgo Men…”

Ok, if your life is astrology, and you’ve been writing a national astrological column for a mainstream media – then sure, go for it. Otherwise, skip your sign!

“I’m Attractive, Funny and Nice”

And you’re likely way more than that. This opener sounds too bland and says nothing about you as most people hope they are nice, funny and attractive. This will quickly be a left swipe.

A more descriptive opening would be “I’m told I laugh like Sandra Bullock, am as sweet as the tiramisu I’m known for baking and treat each date as I’d want my daughter to be treated on a date.” Now that’s fun… and definitely not generic.

“I’m 64… But All My Friends Say I Look 45”

You are 64. Does this line exude confidence in yourself? Nope. This will be read as insecurity. Let the singles online make their own decisions that you look great for your age.

“Impress Me”

You might be surprised, but I had a 56-year-old male author insist this was a wonderful line. Then I asked him why he’d called me. Case closed.

“I’m Low Maintenance”

In my 25+ years coaching people with online dating (and with a 60% success rate culminating in relationships) I’ve found this generally means the exact opposite. There would be red flags waving like crazy here. Why would this be your opening salvo? Delete! And if you see this line on a profile – run the other way!

“I Don’t Own a TV”

Other than sounding eccentric, you won’t really make a nice impression with this line. If you want to appear intelligent, that you know your way around on-demand videos, or that you read the classics, then use that in your profile.

“My Family and Friends Are Really Important to Me”

Hopefully, this is a given!

“Deleting Soon”

Well, that’s a huge disappointment to see. I would read this opener as “a singleton burnt out on online dating.” No one looking at your profile will want to be brought down by depressing stories of your unsuccessful dating adventures!

Don’t treat yourself as a retail item getting discounted just because you haven’t been chosen. Approach online dating as an exciting adventure! It certainly can be!

For how long have you been dating online? What was the opening line in your very first online dating profile? If you have an active profile, what’s your opening line right now? Have you seen seriously disturbing openers while browsing others’ profiles? Can you remember one that made a bad impression on you?
