16 Best Shoes for Older Women

best shoes mature women

Happy feet, happy day! I’m not sure that’s a common expression, but I know that my days are always better when I have good footwear that will get me through the day without any foot or leg pain. Nothing can put a damper on your excellent day more than having sore feet.

Comfortable shoes are a must, even more so as we get older. What are the best shoes for older women? Do we have to compromise on style and exclusively wear granny shoes as we age over 50? I don’t think so! I love having comfortable stable footwear, but I also like that they look stylish and reflect my personality and lifestyle.

We should all own at least a pair of shoes for the different occasions and activities that we have in our lives. Obviously, you don’t wear your runners to an evening out or your slinky sandals to the gym.

The basic categories of shoes for older women:

  • Casual, every day, walking shoes
  • Workout, physical activity shoes
  • Evening, dressy shoes

I will concentrate on shoes and not sandals nor boots in this article. Let’s take a look at some of the best shoes for mature women out there.

The basic criteria to make it on the list are:

  • Good quality
  • Comfort
  • Stability: soles, arch support, etc.
  • Size ranges: wide, narrow, etc.
  • Price
  • Great reviews!

Shoes for Older Women – What to Look For

Comfort is key! Without compromising on style, of course. We all lead different lifestyles, but one thing that we all have in common is that we want comfy shoes that won’t blister or hurt our feet.

I tend to buy better quality shoes now, and I expect them to last longer than the fast-fashion footwear I used to wear 20 years ago.

Remember, your feet change in congruence with the rest of your body. Many older women get wider feet with weight gain. Look for shoes that offer size and width ranges. You may even require a different size now.

Quality construction and material will assure a better fit and a more comfortable shoe. Rigid fabric and non-flexing soles are a recipe for blisters.

Where to Find Shoes for Older Women

There are specialty stores that specialize in shoes for older women, but you definitely don’t have to limit yourself to those.

I find that asking women around me what type of shoes they wear and would recommend always opens new doors for me. Of course, our feet are all different, but it’s always good to have more options to explore.

Shopping online has become quite trendy in the last few years and grew exponentially during the lockdowns. Shoes are one of those things that I always hesitate to order online. If it’s a new brand and a new outlet, I make sure to read the return policies in case I need to exchange them or send them back.

Easy Fall Glam Smoky Eye Makeup (Step-by-Step)

smoky eye makeup

Pull out your inner glamour girl, we are doing a smoky eye! Nearly every woman I know and work with would love to have the smoky-eye look but struggles to apply it. In fact, one over 65 female talent I work with looks forward to shoot days because I pull out the stops to make her look glamorous!

With that in mind, let’s talk how to create a fall glam look including smoky eyes, false lashes, and lathering the lip gloss.

Glamorous Smoky Eye

Smoky eyeshadow is primarily about blending eyeliner and eyeshadow in a way that makes you look sexy and not like you have a black eye. I know this sounds obvious, but there is a fine line between the two that is very easy to overstep. I suggest you tackle this look by going step-by-step and ensuring you have products and brushes that will most help you.

Start with a waterproof eye pencil like Stila Waterproof Smudgestick Liner and apply it to your waterline both on top and below. If you use a liner that isn’t waterproof, odds are good it will either run down your face or wipe off within a few minutes.

Then add the same liner above your lash line and below, so that you have rimmed your eyes both inside and outside of your lash line. After that, take a pencil brush like the By Terry Pencil Brush and blend both the top and bottom.

The challenge here is that a heavily lined eye doesn’t work on all eye shapes, so you have to go with what looks good on you. For the most part, I am especially careful with the under-eye liner and blending, as this can easily blur into dark circles and give that I haven’t slept in two weeks look that no one wants.

When in doubt, just add some color to the bottom outer edge – as opposed to all the way across – and call it good.

In the video, I use a wonderful eyeshadow palette by Illamasqua called Movement Artistry to add depth to the lid and crease area. If your eyes can handle it, apply the color all over the lid and blend up into your crease, but if you have deep set eyes or small lids like I do, then stick with the outer lid and pop your middle and inner lid with a gold shimmer.

False Lashes: Should You Wear Them?

Long eyelashes are in style, but they can easily look crazy if you’re not careful. I’ve had women come into the makeup room having not kept up with their lash extensions, and they look like a broken spider is crawling out of their eye socket!

Lash extensions can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor to manage, hence my continued love for false lashes. Having said that, they can also look amiss if you wear ones that are too prominent or dense.

Whether or not false lashes are right for you depends on your eye shape, sensitivity (they can irritate sensitive eyes), and type of lashes. Also, applying false lashes can be a challenge if your eyesight is limited for close-up maneuvering.

In the video, I demonstrate how to trim, apply glue, and apply the gorgeous Pinkzio False Lashes in Adore Me on my eyes. In truth, it takes me a few attempts to get it right when I wear false lashes, but once they are on, there is no arguing that they are worth the effort.

False lashes have the wonderful effect of making me want to over accessorize my outfit, run outside, and furiously blink at everyone. No doubt my conservative neighbors might frown on this behavior, but I’m sure my diva alter ego wouldn’t care.

How to Make Your Lips Look Bigger

Glamorous lips mean shiny puffy lips, and if you’re anything like me, that ship has sunk a bit. To create that plumped up lip look, try a lip pencil one to two shades darker than your skin, like Jane Iredale Nude Lip Liner Pencil, and draw it slightly outside your natural lip line.

Then, fill in the outer edges of your lips to add depth, and lather on your favorite lip gloss, mine is Jane Iredale Mocha Latte gloss. Voilà, your lips are enormous. Personally, I like to kiss my daughters while wearing gobs of lip-gloss, just because.

This look takes a bit of time and practice, but it’s fun and playful and can lift your spirits. Who among us hasn’t felt like dancing while wearing eyeliner and lashes?

Going back to the over 65 female talent I work with, when we do the smoky eyed look, she and I have been known to head over to the bakery and buy gluten free vanilla birthday cake covered in sprinkles… just for giggles. Glamour will do that.

What does your glamour girl look include? When was the last time you “put it on”? Have you tried the smoky eye look with false lashes? What results and tips can you share?

“I Think I Can,” the Words of Every New Learner

I think I can; confidence; growth mindset

When I was a little girl, I remember my father reading me a bedtime story, The Little Engine That Could, over and over and over again. Not by his choice, but because I requested it over and over and over again. The words “I think I can” became embedded in my mind, and although along the way I forgot the specifics of the story, that phrase has been the engine of my life’s journey.

For those of you unfamiliar with the tale, it’s about a little locomotive engine asked to do a near-impossible task: chug its way up a mountain pulling a long train whose engine had broken down, when all the larger locomotive engines, easily up to the task, refused.

The little engine, unsure and scared, nonetheless agrees to try. And off it goes, repeating “I think I can” to itself over and over again until the little engine makes its way successfully over the top of the mountain.

Mindset for Optimal Learning

Come to find out, these many decades later, that “I think I can” is actually the mindset that allows for optimal learning, from toddlers to seniors, according to Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck. Learning, in turn, is that which allows for success, for the simple reason that we have to learn the skills of whatever it is we are aiming for if we are to be successful at it.

Take Juanita Gonzales, for example. Juanita, now in her 80s, started running at 54 years old, and persisted, with whatever her version of “I think I can” was, until she was able to run competitively. Juanita scored Gold Medals in 72 Road Races, to her great delight. But then, in her mid-70s, Juanita suffered a bad fall, which in addition to a concussion, robbed her of all ability to write, speak and walk normally.

Doctors thought she would not recover. Yet, a mere three years later, Juanita had re-taught herself not only to write, to speak, and to walk, but to run. Juanita took 2nd place in the 2015 National Senior Games Road Race, and a few years later, earned the Bronze at the 2019 5K Road Race in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Without a growth mindset, a firm belief in “I think I can,” Juanita’s stunning recovery would not have been possible.

Never “Too Old”

But here’s the thing. What trips many of us up in our later decades is that we buy into the myth of “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

False.

Any “old dog” can indeed learn new tricks, if – and it’s a big if – we adopt what Professor Dweck calls a growth mindset. Essentially, it’s the mindset very young children have when they learn.

Young children assume effort pays off, they are seriously committed to achieving whatever it is they want, they don’t abandon something because they’re not there yet, and they’re usually applying themselves to more than one endeavor at a time.

Should you doubt the veracity of the professor’s research, just remember how toddlers learn to walk. They keep falling down and getting up, they don’t quit until they’re not only fully upright, but walking and then running, and they’re usually learning to feed themselves, potty train, and all the rest at the same time.

My Shortcut

“I think I can” is my shortcut to all of the above. “I think I can” gets me back on my feet when I’ve fallen down: literally, as in ballroom dancing, or metaphorically, as in trying to learn Spanish. “I think I can” keeps me on the path of my new endeavor and doesn’t let me give up. “I think I can” lends excitement and enthusiasm to my pursuit of several different things at once.

The capper is that there’s is nothing more satisfying when you’ve made it up that big mountain than to say to yourself, as the little engine did: “I thought I could.”

What new skills have you acquired recently that may surprise most people? What obstacles have you had to overcome to reach a goal?
