Am I Old or Older – or A Rose by Any Other Name?

old or older or senior or boomer

I was recently talking to some friends about the fact that I was writing a book about being in our later years, which I have just published. I may have used the word “old.”

One woman immediately alerted me to be careful never to use the word “old” – “We are ‘older’ – not old,” she insisted.

This got me thinking. Everyone tiptoes around the problem of what to call older (or old) people, as if it were a kind of embarrassing condition to which we must not call too much attention.

Pensioners

Oh dear. Such a problem.

Old people in the UK were for many years referred to as old age pensioners (often shortened to pensioners or OAPs). Any woman over 60 (or man over 65) was deemed to be an OAP, correctly as they would be drawing a state pension. The qualifying ages have changed more recently.

Although the phrase was used descriptively, it immediately conjured up someone slightly bent over and possibly leaning on a cane, like those road signs to warn drivers to be careful of old people in the area.

Pensioners were assumed to be poor, to be living quiet lives and not likely to live very long. I’m not sure when it happened, but this term seems to have gone out of style.

Seniors and Boomers

In the meantime, the word senior citizen or seniors became very popular in the US and has been growing in Britain.

Aside from the confusion with those in their last year of high school or college, both of whom were known as seniors in my day, this always had the unpleasant whiff of a euphemism to me.

Who, after all, would want to be called a junior? And this is only the reverse.

As my particular generation has aged, older people are sometimes referred to as baby boomers in a descriptive way. This at least has a more active image.

The difficulty for me is the incidental association with the word ‘baby’, a patronising epithet for women that has always been deeply offensive to me. Sometimes this is shortened to boomers, often seen as pejorative.

And some words are used for more formal occasions, such as person of advanced years usually in an effort not to sound condescending. The more medical term geriatric and the somewhat jokey term oldster pop up from time to time.

Just occasionally, a word can actually seem respectful of older people. Derived initially from discussions about older people in other societies, the word elder came into fashion, with a mild overtone of wisdom. This is not really used much in ordinary parlance.

Sticks and Stones

We all know that there are numerous words that imply an older person, particularly a woman, is decrepit, no longer able to think and, frankly, plain.

There is old crone, followed by old hag, old bag, old biddy and old crock. Not to mention old dear. Even superannuated, although ostensibly more respectful, is not something anyone would aspire to be.

When it comes to politics, the term blue rinse brigade suggests a more conservative (and possibly Conservative) bent. For those who don’t know, it used to be common for older women to rinse their grey hair with a blue dye, giving it a blue-ish tinge.

And then there are the more direct insults. My son, in his teens, referred to older people as crumblies or wrinklies. These, at least, added a bit of humour.

And finally, I can’t omit my favourite. A friend tells me that years ago, the French referred to vielles femmes (old ladies), très vielles femmes (very old ladies) and son et lumières – the latter being the sound and light show often played onto ancient castles or monuments in rural France.

I can just visualise the kind of old lady that might be compared to an ancient monument, but it certainly isn’t me.

I have tried to track this down to more recent usage, but alas, none of my French friends could help here.

Personally, I take it all with a bit of a laugh – we are who we are, and we would smell as sweet by any other name.

What word for old people do you like best? Do any of these annoy you? Can you think of other terms for old people?

What Should I Do? Confessions from an Overthinker

overthinking life decisions

If I had a dollar for every time a question or second thought occurred to me, I would assuredly be a billionaire! Overthinking next steps or actions is an all-too-familiar pattern for me and without realizing it, I will consider if it’s the right time to do just about anything!

Call it procrastination, overthinking, or perfectionism, this habit has been with me for a long time. Consider thisreplay of a recent conversation in my brain:

Myself: I’m wondering if I should try that weight loss medicine?

Other Self: Oh, I don’t think it is a good idea.

Myself: Yes, I did read about the side effects. And after all, I did lose 10 pounds during the pandemic. Maybe I can just do it on my own?

Other Self: Yes, you can do it on your own.

Myself: Oh really? Losing 10 pounds over the last year, when I’m obese, and tried to lose for 20+ years, is not exactly efficient timing!!

Other Self: Just congratulate yourself and keep going. A loss is a loss.

Myself: Right, but I’m 70 and the time on the clock is disappearing. I might even be dead before I reach a healthy weight!!

Other Self: Oh, there you go again. Such a pessimist!

Seeing the Problem

I did make the decision about taking medication and proceeded with action. It is when the thoughts replay repeatedly, and over time, that I know it is becoming a problem.

In his popular book, Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking, author Jon Acuff says, “Overthinking steals time, creativity and productivity by making you listen to broken soundtracks,” and “I discovered how to turn overthinking from a super problem into a superpower.” It is an excellent read and it helped me understand my own patterns and how to address them.

Early Morning Clarity

It is common for me to “see” solutions in my mind’s eye upon awakening in the morning. Somehow my morning thoughts seem clearer, I’m rested, and they often lead to calendaring the day and planning the week ahead.

My first article written for publication was entitled, “Never a Right Time to Have a Baby.” Motivated by gratitude, the article was written after my son was born and treatment for my first cancer included two weeks in the hospital, a major surgery and loss of fertility when the baby was just 12 weeks old. Indeed, we were lucky to get pregnant when we did, and the idea for the article “sparked” early one morning.

While I didn’t write an article about it, a more recent experience taught me there is never a right time to start a business. Thrive Headwear, my chemo hat company, was born one early morning in 2010, when I envisioned a particular way to assemble and sew a head cover. The design occurred one morning when I had just awakened. That early morning idea, a bejeweled bandana-styled cotton scarf, sold in the thousands!

My cancer diagnosis coincided with leaving a job, trying to save money on my own head wear, and ultimately led to designing five additional hat products. I retired the business nine years later, after creating a website and wholesaling to hospitals and cancer centers in 10 states.

Much earlier in life, I recall receiving another visual cue while walking the aisle at my bookstore. I spotted striking colors on the white spine of a book. Taken by those bright pink, magenta, lavender, and purple colors streaking across the white cover, it took me a few moments to notice the book was titled, Listening to Your Inner Voice.

Since the topic of listening to my intuition had come up in a conversation earlier in the week, I smiled and bought the book, realizing I’d just been presented with an answer!

Decision Models and Lists

As a counselor, career and outplacement coach and a university and community education instructor for years, my favorite decision-making model was one that involved evaluating choices against one another using a ranked list of personal/work values.

With a little math, clear priorities always resulted and my students, clients and I loved the way these choices emerged.

Handwritten lists are also useful to me, if even to just clear my head. Containing the thoughts on a paper list, or in my phone, is the first step toward resolution. Seeing those tasks on my list immediately signals next steps, and I often combine tasks, assign myself dates and thoughts turn into action.

What’s Next?

Next? For what seems like the grandaddy of all decisions because I’ve been stuck for so long, what is next for me? The answer is that I just launched a blog, “Aging with Passion” and proposed some courses in the local college community education department.

I’m taking some online courses to improve blogging and teaching skills and plan to deliver my training on the website associated with the blog. My focus is working at living our best lives in our 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, healthy aging, relocation retirement and retirement careers.

Inspired by wonderful men and women who have shared their stories with me in a series of “Successful Aging” profiles written for a local university research center on aging, I look forward to paying forward their inspiration! For someone who thinks, “what should I do now?” step one is submitting this article to SixtyandMe.com. Onward!

What is next for you? Have you been stuck because of uncertainty? Is there a time of day when you’re full of ideas? What idea did you have today? Share your thoughts even if you aren’t clear on the answers. Let’s start a discussion!

Shoppers’ Hair Is ‘Feeling Thicker Each Day’ Thanks to This $30 Shampoo From Amazon

In the beauty world, it’s known that when it comes to thickening hair products, those with biotin in the ingredients list seem to get the job done the best—and that seems to be the case with a $30 “miracle shampoo” from Amazon that has garnered nearly 12,000 perfect ratings from shoppers.

The Pura D’or thickening shampoo is infused with biotin and other herbal ingredients that strengthen your hair and reduce thinning, according to the brand. It’s formulated to reduce scalp dryness and infuse your strands with essential vitamins that prevent breakage. Reviewers credit it for giving them their thick hair back in a shocking amount of time.

“I noticed the difference in my hair quality from the first day,” wrote one five-star reviewer. “My hair dresser spontaneously told me that she could see new hair growth without me telling her that I was doing anything different just two weeks into using it!”

This is no fluke—the shampoo has been clinically tested and proven to thicken hair. According to the study, after eight weeks of daily use, “users show significantly less hair in brush, thicker and healthier hair.”

Pura D'or Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Biotin Shampoo

In addition to strengthening strands, this shampoo nourishes them. Conditioning saviors like argan, grapefruit seed, pumpkin seed, and tea tree oils are all jammed into the formula so that your hair won’t dry up after each wash. And, of course, there’s biotin included. The B-vitamin found in healthy and fatty foods like salmon, sweet potatoes, and eggs, is heralded for its ability to help hair stay healthy. Another ingredient worth praising? Zinc, which according to Healthline, “helps keep the oil glands around the follicles working properly.” So, the smoother your hair, the less tangles, the less breakage. It makes sense.

What’s more, the vegan and cruelty-free product has a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you’re not loving it (which, we doubt will be the case), you’ll get your full money back.

“I’ve been using for 3 weeks and notice my hair is NOT falling out like before,” wrote one five-star reviewer. “There is very little hair in my brush when I clean it… My hair is feeling thicker each day since it’s not falling out. I strongly recommend that you buy the conditioner and scalp serum for max results.”

Shoppers who say they used to dread going to the bathroom to shower now say that they feel confident with their mane again.

“As soon as I used this shampoo, the shedding seemed to put in a screeching halt,” wrote one reviewer. “I don’t shed like a dog anymore. Though I still lose strands on a daily basis, it is not as worrying as it used to be. I hope this miracle shampoo will hold its really promising start and I intend to keep this shampoo for good!”

Now, imagine if $30 could go this far in everything we bought. Shop the fan-favorite thickening shampoo on sale here.

I’ve Tried $719 Worth of Skinceuticals Products & These Are The Ones You Actually Need

As a shopping writer, I experience some pretty incredible perks—testing out products before they hit the market, getting the low-down on all of the best sales, and receiving samples of beauty products that I certainly could not afford on my own. The latter allowed for me to test a bunch of products from perhaps the most renowned and high-end skincare brand on the market: Skinceuticals. You might’ve heard of the brand because of its uber-famous vitamin C serum, or maybe, like me, your dermatologist recommended it for its incredible acne-treatment options. Either way, you probably are aware the the extremely effective line-up of offerings is fairly pricey.

That’s why I wanted to let you know what products are actually worth the hype. Over the years, I’ve tested out more than $700 worth of Skinceuticals acne serums, anti-aging products, and corrective moisturizers and let me tell you, it’s been an eye-opening experience. I’ve found products that I refuse to leave the house with, tested some that weren’t all that impressive, and found the closest thing to a cure for cystic acne bumps—I never thought that was possible.

RELATED: Shoppers Say This Dark Spot Corrector Is ‘Even Better Than Laser Treatments’—Here’s How

What I’ve learned is that if you’re in the market for a toner or a moisturizer, you probably don’t need to spend your cash on Skinceuticals’ offerings. I didn’t have a bad experience with the glycolic toner or emollience moisturizer, but I also didn’t notice much of a difference in my skin. Instead of spending $40 to $63 on these, I’d stick with a classic CeraVe option.

However, if you’re like me and are somehow in your twenties (or any age, really) and you’re going through puberty again, experiencing a second wave of acne while also having to worry about under-eye bags and dark spots, I’ve got several life-changing products that are more than worth the investment.

Below, you’ll see my rundown of these hits.

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

C E Ferulic Acid

C E Ferulic Acid

First thing’s first: The C E Ferulic Acid is worth every d*mn penny. Yes, it’s $166, but this serum lasted me half a year—and did wonders for my skin. It’s clinically proven to protect skin against environmental damage, and living in New York, I’m prone to a whole lot of that. The vitamin C serum is effective for up to three day’s worth of time, so even if I skipped a few applications here and there, my skin would never dull or lose its glow. Not to mention, it didn’t ever leave my skin feeling dry like a lot of other vitamin C serums have. I have combination skin, so it’s difficult to find serums that won’t make my face oily or patchy.

I’d recommend you buy this if you’re concerned about fine lines, wrinkles, or environmental stressors. It’s very brightening and creates a nice dewiness, as well, so if you’re in the market for something to help your skin glow, this is the product for you.

Glycolic Renewal Cleanser

Glycolic Renewal Cleanser

As stated above, I’ve been struggling with acne as of late. Instead of shiver with dread, I’m reaching for my Old Faithful: Skinceuticals’ Glycolic Renewal Cleanser. I started using this a few years ago when I was experiencing some very painful cystic acne, and it helped erase those away without drying my skin. I know that a $38 cleanser might seem steep, but hear me out: This one is packed to the brim with skin-saving ingredients and acids that wipe away grime from deep within your pores, leaving your skin clean without depleting any of its essential oils.

Not to mention, it boosts cell turnover. This helps with healing acne scars, dark spots, and minimizing the appearance of fine lines. If you’re somebody who loves to have a face full of makeup on the regular, or who’s fighting off bumps and white heads, I couldn’t recommend this cleanser enough. It’s a saving grace.

For the record, one bottle lasts me around three months. So basically you’re paying a little over $10 a month for this product.

Blemish + Age Defense Serum

Blemish + Age Defense Serum

If you experience cystic acne, trust me when I say I know what you’re going through. Having those large under-the-skin bumps arrive on your face (likely during the worst times) can be heartbreaking. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it effects my confidence when this occurs, and often leaves me wanted to cover my face up with anything I can—scarves, hoodies, you name it. But, this product has helped me so much whenever these painful cysts arrive. And, in just a few days’ time, it gets rid of them.

The Blemish + Age Defense serum is formulated with salicylic acid to reduce your sebum production (the pore-clogging oil) while also cleaning our your pores. It dries out whiteheads and kicks black heads to the curb without leaving my skin feeling rough and patchy. Plus, every time I use this, the redness surrounding these bumps goes down and my face tone evens out a bit. This is extremely useful because then I feel less of a need to pack on concealer and foundation, clogging my pores even more.

This is the hero product I never leave home without. It’s my safety serum that I keep on hand and love to use to prevent and combat painful acne. It lasts for about three months and I apply it multiple times a day (it’s gentle enough for this type of use!).

If you experience cystic acne, get this product. You won’t regret it.

AOX + Eye Gel

AOX + Eye Gel

My under-eye bags have a life of their own, and they like to think that they’re the main characters of my face. But, I found a gel that keeps them in their place. This serum/gel combo has vitamin C and other antioxidants to soothe my under eyes and deflate any baggy skin. It’s also designed to minimize the appearance of crow’s feet and wrinkles, while also protecting skin against pollutants in the air.

For those who are concerned with how their skin is aging, I’d say this gel is a home run.

Clarifying Clay Mask

Clarifying Clay Mask

I’ve become accustom to giving my skin a refresh and recoup day once a week, and this Clarifying Mask is a major part of that. It somehow sucks our the dirt and grime from my pores without leaving my skin feeling like leather. This is all thanks to the hydroxy acid blend that exfoliates skin, and also the aloe and chamomile included, which soothe my face. Unlike other “clay” masks, this one is made from actual clays from the earth, and doesn’t include any harsh and irritating chemicals.

I use it once a week (usually on Sundays) and love how it gives my skin a boost. If acne is a worry of yours, try out this top-rated face mask.

Silymarin CF

Courtesy: Skinceuticals.

Silymarin CF

It shouldn’t be rocket science to create a vitamin C serum that’s curated for acne-prone skin, but apparently in the skincare world, it is. That’s why it was so exciting when Skinceuticals launched this Silymarin CF product last year. The first-of-its-kind serum combines all of the goodness of a typical vitamin C product with the protectiveness and treatment of an acne product. It’s made with salicylic acid, silymarin, and the same ferulic acid that’s used in Skinceuticals’ most famous product. Together, these ingredients cleanse my skin, brighten it, and protect it from any grime.

I use this serum as an all-over treatment in the morning before I apply makeup, and as a spot treatment throughout the day on any blemishes that I might have. It works to brighten my face, and also tackles zits like a lineman. I love it.

There you have it. Six essential Skinceuticals serums, cleansers, and face masks that are undoubtedly worth the money. Trust me—and my skin!

Dior Temporary Tattoos Are a Thing Now & They’ll Make You Feel Ultra-Luxe

Since 1999, Dior’s J’adore Eau de Parfum has been one of the top fragrances each year — and for good reason. Even the bottle is sexy. It was inspired by the figure-eight designed by Christian Dior and adorned with what looks like a golden necklace around a woman’s neck. The sensual scent combines Ylang-Ylang, Damascus Rose and Grasse Jasmine for a classic floral that smells nothing like your grandma’s bedroom.

This month, Dior is celebrating its iconic scent with a new campaign called J’adore J’adore. According to the brand, it introduces a new generation of J’adore women shot by photographer Brigitte Niedermair. The statuesque women are in gold dresses holding the J’adore bottle. But there’s something different about them. Each has a gold foil tattoo.

Dior Makeup Creative and Image Director, Peter Philips designed the limited-edition temporary tattoos featuring the campaign slogan, “Life is Not Black & White, Life is Gold.” If you know your beauty history, this is actually an ode to the original 1999 campaign featuring Carmen Kass.

It makes a great gift for the mother-in-law who has everything, the teenager who is just getting into fragrance (and will be rocking the hell out of the tattoos) — anyone, really. Though there’s always a trendy new perfume hitting the market, there’s something about a classic that never goes out of style. Plus, the luxe bottle looks like art sitting on a vanity. There will be zero regifting here.
