3 Sure-Fire Ways to Keep an Aging Marriage Sparkly

Aging-Marriage

Preserve the Practice of Ritual

When we were first married, my husband would sit on the edge of our king-size bed every morning and circle my slim waist with his massive hands.

Facing him, with a large toothed comb in one hand and globs of conditioner in my other hand, I’d transform his mass of dark curly locks into a more professional look. Then he would pull me close for a warm embrace before reluctantly releasing me from his muscled grasp.

This “Harlequin Moment” gradually dwindled both in brevity and regularity with the arrival of babies who grew into toddlers and toddlers who grew into nursery school goers. Early morning chaos replaced the previous Zen-like beginning of our day.

My husband’s curly locks and heavily muscled back are gone, as is my slim waist. The toddlers are grown with families of their own. No pressing work demands await us. And we wake up once again – just the two of us.

Our new morning ritual begins with me now facing his back, not his chest. Magical cream designed to block nerve pain has replaced the hair pick and conditioner.

With long, smooth strokes, I carefully apply the cream to his back, shoulders, and lower torso – cream that enables him to walk a few city blocks with relative ease.

The series of actions I performed has now changed to a prescribed order. However, the ritual of doing something intimately and consistently with my husband has been re-ignited.

Show Your Best Side to Your Spouse

My charm, cleverness, and sense of humor were often other-directed – into my writing and speeches. To my wide circle of friends. To utter strangers.

But how was I treating the man I had been married to for over 40 years? With shock, I started noticing a shrillness creeping into my voice when I spoke to him. A dismissive, insensitive tone. A condescending way of answering his never-ending basic questions about how to use the note section in his cell phone.

I silently instigated a campaign to “lose the snippiness.” I stopped myself from getting irritated at the way he clapped too loud at concerts – always out of sync with the rest of the audience. I stopped criticizing his relatives, even when I felt I was right.

I stopped complaining about his clothes thrown on the floor and his cane invariably left in a place where I would most likely trip over it. I stopped denigrating his food preferences for what I considered to be bland and uninteresting.

Apply Kindness

Instead of leaving him a written, blistering note full of directions and exclamation marks (and a few expletives too), I started politely asking him to call the landscaper and check on the withering bushes against the southern wall.

Instead of bitchily shooting off strident directions, I started laughing at his inability to take a decent picture with his iPhone. Instead of displaying ill-concealed and irritated impatience, I started respectfully listening to his political opinions with full attention.

Recently, a friend pulled me aside and whispered in my ear, “Geez, when did all this start? You’re being so nice to your husband.” I flushed with embarrassment, recalling all the moments I’d lost to snappiness.

And then, flooded with happiness, I realized that the random acts of kindness, gentleness, and compassion I’d been showering on friends and strangers was now also drizzling down to the most important person in my life – my partner.

It’s funny. There seem to be less clothes on the floor for me to trip over. His camera skills may be improving. He’s not clapping as loudly at concerts, and he’s experimenting with new foods. Or is it just my imagination?

Perhaps it’s just that my new approach has sharpened my focus on why I fell in love with him in the first place.

How does your long marriage affect the way you treat your spouse? Do you think there are ways you could be kinder and gentler with him? Please share with our community how you utilize ritual, attitude, and behavior to keep your marital sparkle alive.

Keep Your Memories Safe: How Cloud Services Could Save Your Bacon in a Disaster

Save-Your-Adult-Bacon-During-Disasters

Half a year after the Napa and Sonoma wildfires from a couple years ago, NBC Bay Area reported on the plight of a homeowner locked in a dispute with one specific insurer.

Thinking they were on to something, they partnered with Telemundo 48 to extend an open invitation to meet other people in similar circumstances. Expecting 55 people to turn out to a church assembly, they doubled that and some.

When the newscasters asked the assembled, “How many lost everything?” every hand in the room was raised. It turned out that all homes were insured by the same company, and when asked who got everything they expected from the insurance policy, no one raised their hand.

The TV crew found out that the insurer was requiring the people to do a detailed, item-by-item inventory of the contents of their home in order to get 100 percent of their coverage. Forgoing the itemized list, the payout would be reduced by 25 percent.

They could not have made it more difficult for us to do these inventories as well,” Bob Cheal, a fire victim, told NBC Bay Area. The software those homeowners were required to use was glitchy and cumbersome.

A licensed psychologist quoted in the story stated that the inventory process can additionally retraumatize fire victims. I can see why. It’s reliving the story.

The story ended with this piece of advice: “Do a home inventory, now. Take photos or video in every room. Document everything you own. Then, save those files to the cloud for safekeeping.”

Filing Cabinet or Safe Is Not Enough

The recent wave of natural disasters and the wrath of Hurricane Florence are reminders that storing things in a cardboard box or your desktop computer is dangerous.

Everyone needs to have an emergency preparedness plan that includes protecting important papers and documents in an online system.

“There’s no file cabinet that could have survived the devastation of Hurricane Harvey or Irma,” says Ken Bitticks, co-founder of Digital LifeCloud, a cloud platform that allows you to securely store and organize the important information that runs your life. If an emergency occurs, you can retrieve it immediately.

Since I live in the Carolinas and was sweating out Florence’s approach to Charlotte, I paid more attention to the online conversation and the media.

They were urging people to take photos or videos of their belongings before they evacuate. That’s a good first step. Putting it in an organized cloud system for easy retrieval is the vital second step.

Online Solutions Vary and Create Siloes

One inclination would be to just take pictures and videos and store them on your phone. However, if your phone does not automatically connect to a Cloud service, or you lose it or damage it when you are fleeing from a storm, you are out of luck.

A storage solution like Dropbox can work. But think of services like that as your filing cabinet. What they don’t provide is an organizing structure – the file folders if you will.

Then there are services like electronic medical records, a portal your accountant or insurance agency provides, etc. All of these are silo organizing systems that do not communicate with one another which makes pulling multiple sources of information together in an emergency difficult.

Recently emerging services allow you to digitally organize everything in your life – from all of your medical records and insurance policies to tax returns and photos of your children – and access them 24/7 anywhere in the world.

In many ways, it’s preparing for the oops moments in life – the disasters, lost passport, lost wallet, stolen items. And it allows you to save the ahh moments too – photos, video, life stories that can be cherished forever.

Yeah but It’s a Pain to Organize All of This

You may think it’s a difficult job, trying to organize all this – and it is, if you are trying to scurry around and take photos when you are fleeing a disaster. It’s another matter if you systemically take the time to organize your digital life.

Dorothy, “The Organizer” and face of A&E’s Emmy-nominated hit TV series Hoarders, advises people to start small and keep the organizing sessions brief.

“For those overwhelmed by the thought of organizing documents, I emphasize the simplicity these services provide as well as the gratitude you’ll feel later when you can easily access these records from your mobile device,” she says.

When You Organize and Prepare the Rewards Are Great

Super users of these platforms document big purchases, scan receipts, inventory house contents, and much more.

Bob Hammer is one such gentlemen. His three-year-old laptop was stolen from a hotel, and police needed the serial number. The hotel needed a receipt for the original purchase. He had all of it digitally stored and organized. He received $3,000!

He received an additional $1,000 off the cost of a new automobile. The factory had a “competitor discount” that he got because he could produce the registration for a car he owned previously. He had that organized in a specific auto app that his cloud service provided.

Natural disasters are especially hard for older adults. Few, if any, of us have gone the extra step to create and discuss a plan with family members or plan for how to recharge essential medical devices or refill life-saving prescriptions. And, unfortunately, doctors and hospitals only have the records on services they provide.

As we see these natural disasters increase, consider digitizing your life for safe keeping and, more importantly, for peace of mind.

What method are you using to keep your important records safe? Have you started digitizing your personal information? Which cloud service are you using? Please share in the comments below.

5 Healthy Tips to Thrive this Holiday Season Without Regrets

healthy tips holiday season

Let’s face it: it is hard to stick to healthy eating and an exercise plan during the holidays. Everywhere we turn, there are tempting foods and drinks – from treats at office parties to our own traditional family favorites.

When you add in a busy schedule filled with shopping and get-togethers, whether in person or online, that makes it tough to squeeze in exercise. You have a recipe for disaster as far as our scales and our energy are concerned.

The good news is that you really can get through the holidays without gaining weight, feeling stressed and exhausted. It will take some effort, but you will thank yourself a thousand times when January 1st rolls around and you have no regrets!

Set Your Intentions

Think about how you want to feel starting in the New Year. I bet that you don’t want to feel exhausted, overweight, overwhelmed, and frustrated. How would it feel to start the new year full of energy, relaxed, fulfilled, renewed, and ready for what lies ahead?

Picture yourself as you would like to be in the new year and speak to yourself as if you are there and thank yourself for taking the action steps that needed to happen for it to be so.

For example, “Thank you (your name) for staying active, focusing on spending quality time with the people you love, and remaining mindful with your eating this holiday season. It feels so good to not have gained any weight, to have more energy, and to have enjoyed the time spent this holiday season.”

By becoming really clear with yourself about where you want to be, you can be honest with yourself about the action needed to get there.

Prioritize Your Schedule

The holiday season can be very overwhelming. There are so many events, and no one wants to miss out on any of the fun! But the holidays can also bring about a lot of stress and pressure. Remind yourself that it is ok to pick and choose the events you say “yes” to attending.

Politely declining the extras will leave you feeling less stressed and allow room in your schedule to keep up with your workouts and your health.

Be a Mindful Eater

Overeating, stress and emotional eating are big culprits of weight gain over the holiday season. Be mindful at events about what you eat and your portion size. Savor it, and enjoy it!

The holidays can be a very stressful time of year with busy schedules, pressure from family, emotions are high. If you find yourself stressed out or emotional, try not to reach immediately for food. Recognize your emotion and find a healthy way to navigate through it whether that be taking a walk, stepping outside, breathing, chatting with a trusted friend, or journaling.

When at events or meals, don’t deprive yourself of your favorites, instead have a smaller portion and fill your body with healthier items first. Skip the cheese and sweets for appetizers and enjoy some veggies, lean meats, olives, fruit, and nuts to start, helping you to feel more satiated allowing a little bit of room for the traditional favorites.

You might even want to bring a healthier option so that you know there is a lighter dish amongst the heavier favorites.

Stay Active and Exercise

It may feel like you don’t have time to manage your regular routine in between parties, family time, and shopping, but if you prioritize yourself and your health, you will find time to get in a workout. Our workouts at Vitality Fitness and Wellness are just 45 minutes online that you can do right from home!

It’s also a great time of year to get in some extra activity outside! Go for a hike, rake leaves with the grandkids, or walk around and take a look at the lights together. Create some new traditions that add some healthy activity for everyone!

Don’t Skip Meals

Fueling your body with a healthy protein-packed breakfast will help to curb cravings throughout the day and help you consume less extra calories at events. You might think that taking in less calories will be good for you, but your metabolism will slow down and your insulin levels will drop causing you to have brain fog, fatigue, and irritability as well as spike your cravings.

You can survive the holidays with no added weight gain and exhaustion. It’s definitely possible to go into the new year feeling full of energy, refreshed, fulfilled, and ready to take on the year. Remember these tips and keep a vision of what you want to feel like on January 1 in mind. It’s going to be a great holiday season!
