Could Reading Be the Best Anti-Aging Secret?

Anti-Aging Secret

Remember when teachers told you reading was good for you? They were right. And now reading is even associated with living longer.

Researchers at the Yale University School of Public Health have discovered that book readers have a “significant survival advantage” over those who don’t read books.

The findings of the Yale study are now appearing in Social Science and Medicine. They show that people over 50 who read up to three-and-a-half hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die over the 12 years of follow-up. Those who read more than that were 23 percent less likely to die than non-readers.

Of course, even the most avid readers are sometimes at a loss to know what to read next. And readers who are just getting started with intensive reading need to know where to begin.

So with those issues in mind, here is a list of 12 ways to select books or of varying what you are reading.

Pick a Different Theme for Each Month

Your theme could be as serious as a literary look at the nature of good and evil or as frivolous as books with brown, orange, and yellow covers (for the Fall season).

Try a New Genre That You’ve Never Read

I was never a reader of mystery books until the ’90s when I saw a list of mystery books that then-President Bill Clinton was reading. Today some of those authors like George Pelecanos, Michael Connelly and James Lee Burke are among my favorite writers.

Choose an Author and Read Their Entire Catalog

My friend Eddie Supernavage has been doing that for years and has completed all the works of authors as diverse as Soren Kierkegaard and John Gardner.

Pick Up Books on a Topic You’ve Always Wanted to Learn About

Select books on a problem you are interested in and become an autodidact. I’m doing that right now with my research on aging and the Baby Boom generation. My wife is specializing in memoirs of women in Muslim, Asian, or African cultures.

Try A to Z Reading

Pick a category of books, such as biography. Head to your local library. Start going down the rows, selecting the first couple of books that appeal to you about people whose names begin with A.

Check Out Book Review Sites

Reading websites such as Amazon or Goodreads offer you suggestions for new books to read. Sixty and Me has a nice column of book recommendations too.

Try a Smorgasbord Book Night

Have a group of friends over for tea (or something stronger) and a bit of tasty talk about reading. Have each friend bring a book that they have covered to disguise its title. Put all the books in a basket. Each person then takes a book home, reads it, and tells about it at your next session.

Take a Look at Book Lists

Check out Nobel Prize Winners or The 100 Best Books Ever. Select from the list titles you’ve never read.

Talk to Book Experts

Head to your local library or your local bookstore. Staff there will be glad to work with you to come up with interesting recommendations.

Choose a good book that will lead you to another

Purchase a book that will show you how one good book can lead to another. I have used both The Prentice Hall Good Reading Guide and The Lifetime Reading Plan for years.

Find a Book Fair in Your Area

Of course, you can buy the books, but if you want a cheaper option, either jot down titles that intrigue you or take a picture of the cover with your smart phone and then borrow the books from the library.

Use Current Events to Widen Your Reading

Right now, the global events are more than intriguing – a world-scale pandemic, civil unrest, propaganda, and upcoming elections. Truly, there is a lot to read about.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

Of course, no reading list is ever exhaustive. Do you have any other good ways to help readers choose books? Have you used any of the ways on this list? What books are you reading at the moment? Please share with our community!

Dos and Don’ts of Being a Caregiver’s Friend

Being a Caregiver

When a friend mentions to you that they are now taking care of a loved one with special physical or cognitive needs, it’s easy to underestimate what this truly means. And it quite possibly marks the beginning of the end of your friendship, if you don’t tread properly.

It can be a quick hit to your friendship in the case of a parent recovering from a broken hip. Or it can be a gradual demise, when your friend is caring for someone who has been diagnosed in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

In either instance, your friendship will be tested. Since a good friendship is a two-way street, this is not the time to wait for your caregiving friend to take initiative.

They Got a “Job”

Do appreciate that they have a new and very demanding responsibility. Maybe it would be better to think about it as an unpaid job they didn’t apply for, but now have to balance with a career or life’s other responsibilities.

It’s a job. Even when they aren’t physically doing something, they are still mentally consumed. They are wondering what to do next, or rehashing something they feel they did wrong.

Quite often, especially in the case of a disease like Alzheimer’s or other dementia, this responsibility can consume them 24/7. It can wreak havoc on their physical, emotional, and financial welfare.

Consider Their Emotional State

Try to understand that they may do or say things they normally wouldn’t. Cut them some slack.

Don’t judge them based on how they are acting now, keep in mind why you became friends.

Listen to them with an open heart. Let them share, but don’t push them to share more than they want.

If they share their feelings, validate them, and don’t tell them how they should be feeling. For instance, people don’t want to be told they should be happy, or feel lucky to have the opportunity to care for someone.

Attempt to steer the conversation to non-caregiving topics to help them get a mental break. But don’t change the subject or interrupt if they are venting. While talking about something different may be ideal for you, sharing is likely therapeutic for them.

Research the Issue

Do educate yourself about the challenges they are facing. For instance, if they are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, visit Together in This for a basic overview of the disease.

Don’t tell them they should also check out this wonderful resource you found. But tell them you discovered a wonderful resource that has taught you a lot.

This is a subtly different approach. They will tell you if they are interested in learning more by showing interest.

Know that while you may become “book smart,” they are becoming “street smart.” Don’t offer too much advice unless you know them very well, and unless they are receptive. You will know it’s the right time when they ask you questions about what you’ve learned.

Show You Want to Engage and Just Be Around

Pick up the phone and call. Don’t send email and wait for a response.

Do offer to help with specific actions, such as saying, “I’m going to the store, can I pick some things up for you?” Don’t say, “Let me know if I can help.”

Find ways to stay involved in their life, even if it’s only a periodic phone call. And always make things as easy as possible for your friend.

However, if they resist, don’t crowd them or push them to do something. They may need time to recharge, and added pressure may push them further away from you.

Your friend didn’t ask for this added responsibility but they’ve accepted it. And it’s important for you to remember that their caring nature is one of the qualities you love about them.

You might feel confused, worried, or afraid to get involved, but your friend needs you more than ever. So do be a true friend.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

What things do you do to be a friend for someone who is caring for a loved one? Or if you’re the caregiver, what’s your advice for others who want to be a true friend?

The Vitamin C Serum Shoppers Call ‘Liquid Gold in a Bottle’ Is On Sale For $15 Ahead of Labor Day

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

If you’re looking to pare down your skincare routine steps it can be helpful to find products that combine all of your favorite ingredients into one, so you can do more in less time. At the very least, you should be cleansing, adding a serum and topping it off with a moisturizer, but even making those three decisions can be overwhelming in a beauty market that’s definitely oversaturated to say the least. That’s why shoppers are calling this vitamin C serum with retinol and hyaluronic acid “liquid gold in a bottle.” And better yet, it’s on sale now ahead of Labor Day weekend.

Skincare lovers have gone vitamin C ~wild~ in recent years because the ingredient is packed with antioxidants that pull in a multi-tasking effort to save your skin. Vitamin C helps to reduce visible signs of aging by softening fine lines, penetrating the skin to stave off environmental factors like the sun and pollutants (you still need SPF!) and brightening dull and lackluster skin like no other.

But this serum does so much more than just protect your skin with antioxidants. It also has a few other powerful ingredients you may have heard of, like hyaluronic acid, retinol, niacinamide and salicylic acid.

Here’s a quick break down of what each ingredient does in case you’re unfamiliar. Hyaluronic acid locks moisture into the skin which is perfect to add to your routine if you have dry skin or as colder weather approaches. It also helps to boost collagen production over time. Retinol and niacinamide help reduce inflammation and soothe skin for a healthier complexion.

And finally, salicylic acid is great for troubleshooting stubborn acne. It works to clear out gunky and clogged pores to promote sell turnover and kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin. If you struggle with acne but still want the benefits of anti-aging products, this all-in-one is the perfect option.

Shoppers who have tried it are raving about its benefits. “I was going to wait a full month before posting a review, but at approximately three weeks in, I have to say that this product is AMAZING,” wrote one reviewer. “My skin is translucent, the texture is refined, my coloring has become more even.” Another one said, “I’ll buy it again… and again, and again.”

It’s the perfect time to test it out since this product is currently on sale for $7 off of the regular price of $21.95. “This is my dream serum,” wrote another shopper, adding that, “I am 61, I do not suffer from breakouts, but had greasy sallow skin in my youth, which has left some open pores, and this serum closes them up.” Even if you don’t have breakouts, salicylic acid can help shrink pore size.

The same reviewer went on: “I was also a sun worshipper when younger and have some sunspots. This serum does all that is required to make my skin glow.”

If you’ve been looking for a simpler way to go about your skincare routine, pick up this serum to take care of all of your skin issues in one product.
