The Joy of Letter Writing: Reviving a Habit Long Lost

The Joy of Letter Writing Reviving a Habit Long Lost

Do you remember how years before the advent of the Internet we used to write old-fashioned letters to one another that we stamped and mailed? Maybe we even got creative and sealed the letter with special sealing wax.

In a
sense, with the emergence of email correspondence, letter writing has taken
another form, but there’s no doubt that there’s still something magical about
writing and receiving a handwritten letter.

Why Write Letters?

There
are many advantages to writing a letter, as doing so can be a vital tool for clarifying your
feelings to yourself or others. The real purpose of a letter is to inform,
instruct, entertain, amuse, explore psychological problems, keep in touch, or even
provide something as basic as loving sentiments.

Letters can also be a way to write down thoughts
as a segue to face-to-face discussions. Some people use letter writing to
release pent-up emotions, such as complaints to companies about malfunctioning
products or letters to the editor commenting on current events.

Typically, when addressing a particular issue
in a letter, it’s easier (and healthier) to blow up on the page rather than doing
so directly toward an individual. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s also
amusing to write love letters as a way to express one’s innermost feelings.

Many writers are quite good at letter writing.
Some use the form of a letter to warm up or get into the swing of their writing
practice. It’s also a good way to develop one’s voice. And, many writers, such
as myself, jot down thoughts in a journal in letter form as a way to get the words
flowing.

For example, author John McPhee once said that
every book he wrote began with the words “Dear Mother.” His letters didn’t
typically end up in his published books, but they helped him open up to the
thoughts and feelings that were currently on his mind.

Diarist Anaïs Nin began her first journal
entry as a letter to her deranged father as a way to remain connected with him.
She never actually sent the letter, but it ended up being the spark for her writing
passion.

The truth is, it’s not always necessary to
mail the letters you write. Sometimes the simple exercise of writing the letter
is all that’s needed to clear the mind and calm the psyche.

Some people choose to write
letters to their pets, but in truth, you can really write to whomever or
whatever inspires you. It is important to date your letters, though, so
you can keep track of what you were thinking at a particular time.

You might even consider making a
copy for your records. Sometimes it’s amusing and informative to reread letters
you’ve written and sent, and if you’re a writer, maybe the contents can be used
in a future literary work.

Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of letter
writing is the opportunity to communicate exactly what’s on your mind. What
more could a writer ask for than a specific, hand-picked, captivated reader?

Where to Begin?

The best way to start a letter is to jot down what
prompted you to write in the first place and explain why you were thinking of
the recipient at that particular time.

The letters we most enjoy receiving are those that
reveal the writer’s personality. When reading well-written letters, we feel as
if the sender is sitting with us, looking us in the eye, and speaking to us.

Tips for Writing a Letter

  • Use simple, easy-to-understand sentences.
  • Avoid using long, complicated words.
  • Be specific.
  • Break your letter into small sections or paragraphs.
  • Make sure your voice or tone is appropriate for the
    subject of the letter.
  • For clarity, read the letter aloud.
  • Write, rewrite, and polish your letter as needed.

Happy Writing!

If you could say anything you wanted to anyone
in the world, who would you address and why? What would you say? Please share
with our community and maybe you could even consider writing down a letter and
mailing it.

The Iconic Marc Jacobs Daisy Perfume Got a Citrus Update & TikTok Is Freaking Out

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

When Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume first came out in 2007, I was in college and it was a huge splurge for me at the time. But I wore it every day and it kicked off the type of scents I’d wear for years to come. 15 years later, and I’m seeing Gen Zers on TikTok talking about how much they love the scent. Everything — I mean everything — comes back around. But Daisy isn’t the only fragrance folks are excited about. Marc Jacobs Fragrances just released Daisy Ever So Fresh Eau de Parfum, a citrus-y version of the OG with gorgeous packaging.

Both Daisy and Daisy Ever So Fresh are fruity floral fragrances but the new one has key notes of mango, rose water and cashmere woods, as opposed to the strawberry, violet leaves and jasmine notes of Daisy. Fans of citrus scents like mango are going crazy for this scent, so much so that the 30mL size already sold out at Sephora. (We found it at Ulta Beauty, though.) When does that happen with fragrance?!

Over on TikTok, our girl Mikayla Nogueira posted about her love for the new scent. “I’ve never fallen in love with a perfume the way I fell in love with this,” she said. “When they announced this, I lost my shit. Not only do I collect every single Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume and they’re my favorite, but they have a mango one now!” Nogueira loves mango scents so this was right up her alley.

Other creators, like @anjuunnaa, saw it launched and ran right out to buy it. “If you wear this perfume, you are the baddest bitch who has ever walked this planet,” she says, while spritzing it on herself.

I’m officially back on my Marc Jacobs Daisy kick with Ever So Fresh because it feels both nostalgic and new at the same time. With all the TikTok buzz, it’s going to be hard to find soon so grab it while you can.

The Rainbow Really Does Lead to a Pot of Gold!

pot of gold eating the rainbow

The whole premise of my education business, Mind Money Motion, is that the more we take care of our mind and body, the less we have to worry about running out of money… because good health costs less.

Many years ago, I used to be a registered dietitian, so I know the importance of good health. So, when Registered Dietitian Alisha Chasey spoke to a women’s group that I facilitate, I should not have been as surprised as I was when she reminded the audience that 70% of our immune system starts in our gut. Who knew?!

A Healthy Gut

A healthy gut microbiome, the environment in our stomach/intestines, is a crucial requirement for taking care of our body, and it is all driven by what we put in our mouths. If we can focus on color, and keep it fresh and organic, we can boost our immune system. Dietitians know this and challenge us to eat the rainbow every day. Where do we start so we can have a better mind and body?

Build Your Rainbow

Think of a build-your-own-salad bar as a build-your-own-rainbow bar. Experiment with lots of different kinds of greens and vegetables and fruits that can be added as toppings along with some nuts, oils, and even crumbles of cheese or meat. Alisha has some great recipes to check out, not just salad recipes either. One of my favorites is her No-Bake Energy Bites.

It’s All About Behavior Change

As I mentioned earlier, I was a Registered Dietitian as my first career before shifting into the business/financial side of my education. I tease my advisory clients now that I went from helping people balance their diet and exercise to now helping them balance their money life.

It’s all about behavior change no matter which of those subject areas we are talking about. Regardless, changing our behavior is the hardest part!

What Motivates You?

We are all motivated by different things in life. I was always interested in feeling good, staying healthy, and doing whatever I needed to maintain that. So eating the rainbow makes sense to me, and I find it enjoyable and easy to eat vegetables. How about you? I know lots of people who are not big vegetable lovers.

Save More Money

So would the “saving money” by being healthier argument be more motivating for you to eat more vegetables? The numbers are pretty amazing. The Obesity journal found that the average person saves approx. $15,925 if they maintain a healthy weight past age 50.

Americans would save almost $3 billion annually in costs related to constipation if we got 25 grams of fiber/day (which is about 36% more than the average person consumes daily). The New England Journal of Medicine estimated a potential savings of $7 billion annually if Americans reduced daily sodium intake (more fresh vs processed foods).

Fixing Our Health

Certainly, exercise is a critical part of maintaining good health too, but Tufts University reminds us that about 1/3 of the 3 trillion dollars spent on health care is spent on diseases related to diet. Heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are preventable or delayable with a healthy diet. Their message to us: we can fix health care by fixing our health!

One Bite at a Time

I know I have used this “joke” in the past, but it makes such a good point. How do you eat an elephant? Answer: One bite at a time. That’s how we can improve our health. Pick one change you are willing to make and master it.

One eating the rainbow change I am working on is switching from eating prepackaged salad kits to buying organic greens/vegetables to incorporate in a build-your-own-rainbow bar several times a week into our meals. Delicious and beautiful!

Your One Bite

What is one “bite” you could change to eat the rainbow more often? Buy a new fruit or vegetable you haven’t tried once a week? Making a salad your entrée once or more a week? Committing to eating an apple a day (to “keep the doctor away”)? Doubling your vegetable portions to increase your fiber intake? Incorporate a new organic food weekly?

Pick one action. Write it on a sticky note. Post that note (or multiple copies) where you will see it daily to remind yourself of your journey to better health. Check out some of my podcasts to keep you motivated not only related to nutrition but also your mindset and exercise. Without good health, we can’t enjoy anything in life. So a healthy life really is the pot of gold at the end of the fruit/vegetable rainbow!

How do you incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your daily routine? What motivates you to live a healthier life? Let’s have a conversation!

I’m Obsessed With Millie Bobby Brown’s New Bob — & Her Friendship With Noah Schnapp

Sometimes — usually — costars pretend to be BFFs while they’re promoting a TV show or movie but obviously aren’t real friends. Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp are different. Sure, they met on the set of Stranger Things but their friendship transcends any show promotion. It was obvious, and adorable, during an Instagram Live last week, in which Brown showed off her chic new haircut while Schnapp wore under-eye patches from his bestie’s beauty line, Florence by Mills.

To promote season 4 of Stranger Things, Brown has been giving pop star with her long blonde extensions with ’90s bangs. The whole look seemed fun but like a lot of work for the 18-year-old. That’s why we were excited to see her back to a short bob that feels fresh and youthful. It’s probable all her stylist did was remove her extensions and give her strands a trim but her hair looks soft, shiny and healthy.

It’s a style that looks great with no-makeup on Live with your best friend, as well as sleek and slicked-down for a red carpet. This look is one of her best yet, with hair by Marty Harper and makeup by Kelsey Deenihan Fisher.

If you missed Brown and Schnapp’s Instagram Live, you can thank TikTok for capturing a ton of the adorable conversation. Brown teaches Schnapp how to wear Florence by Mills’ Swimming Under the Eyes Gel Pads ($34 at Ulta Beauty). “No, you’ve got two on your face, Noah,” she says when he doubles up on the same eye. He wears them for the rest of the convo so you know he ended it wondering how his skin felt so soft and hydrated.

The cute convo continued when Schnapp tried to describe Brown’s style, saying “There’s a lot of Louis Vuitton in there. I would say you dress really elegantly and everything has a little bit of flair. There’s always something out there a little risky. I like it. I like your style.” We do, too.
