Bulgarian label By Far has some serious celeb fans. Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid wear the brand’s sleek, understated shoes and accessories. It only makes sense By Far would do something a little different for its first-ever fragrance collection, Daydreams. Instead of typical perfume bottles, the It-label made refillable charms you can wear on your By Far bag or just on a belt loop to upgrade any ‘fit. Kendall Jenner is the face of the campaign, directed by Charlotte Wales.

There are seven scents to choose from. Each fragrance oil has been handmade in Grasse in the South of France by three perfumers: Fanny Bal, Jean- Cristophe Hérault and Caroline D. You get the cute charm accessory with a 20mL bottle inside, as well as the 100mL bottle to refill your charm. It’s a great way to travel with your fave fragrance instead of carrying big perfume bottles.

By Far is obviously working towards sustainability, too. The 20mL bottles are made from 15 percent post-consumer recycled glass, while the refill bottles are fully recyclable and wrapped in recyclable paper. The fragrance is cruelty-free and free from colourants
and UV filters. Even the blend of rose essential oils are recovered from discarded rose water.

What is especially cool about the charms is how customizable they are, which makes for a seriously stellar gift. (It’s never too early to start thinking about the gift-giving season!) There are six charm shades, silver or gold detailing and a carabiner or leather strap for your charm bracelet. Then, of course, you choose your fragrance, such as Daydream of Love Trance (with white florals) and Daydream of Rose Garden (with a blend of roses).

Watch Kendall Jenner dance to Mariah Carey’s iconic Fantasy, above, while rocking her By Far charms to get all the inspiration.

5 Ways to Live with Joy as a Single Older Woman

Single-Older-Woman

I’ve been single for the last 20+ years. I got married in 1964, when I was 20 years old. I was married for 18 years (really, 15 years because that is when we separated). And then, after that, I had a relationship with a significant other for 17 years. Doing the math, I was in a relationship for 32 years and single for 45 years.

Remaining Single

It is my intention to stay single. This bold statement is not as drastic as it seems because I know that I will have male friends or boyfriends until I take my last breath. However, it is not my preference to co-habit with a man again (under the same roof) or marry a man no matter how much I love him.

I don’t want to engage in sharing financial planning with a man. I’ve reached the age where I want freedom to choose, to decide what I need. I’ve set my life up so that I can meet my needs and have fun doing it.

Years ago, people used to raise eyebrows at women who chose to live alone. Maybe some people still do. The term old maid comes to mind or even, “she’s just a little crazy.” A man may be called “the proverbial bachelor” but without the female stigma.

You might think it is absurd for me to plunge head on in the single direction and want to live for the rest of my life in singular bliss. Of course, I might be in assisted living someday, so that would negate my concerted desire to live alone. But that’s communal living for the most part, and that’s a horse of a different color.

In this moment of my singular journey, I’ve learned to find hope and strength, determination and happiness within myself, to solve my problems without constantly bothering others, and to design a fulfilling life.

I’ve learned to love being a woman in my own shoes, in my own company. I’ve learned to love myself without reservation.

Every morning when I take my half mile swim in Barton Springs and feel the cold water washing over my body, I give gratitude for the way my life keeps giving me inspiration, fulfilment and joy. When I practice Yoga, the stillness of my life brings me spiritual sustenance.

If you had known me decades ago, you would have seen a woman manically in search of a relationship, in search of togetherness, in search of a soul mate. I was lucky that I found a man who remarkably matched my sensibilities in all the ways I thought important – body, mind, and spirit.

When my partner died, I knew he would have wanted me to keep moving forward, to experience everything I desired, to stay close to my sons and grandchildren, to study, to be curious, to read and most important of all, to write.

My partner never saw my aspirations come to fruition, but it is enough for me to believe that his energy and inspiration infuses my choices and cheers my decisions on to this day.

I Am My Own Soul Mate

When I lived in Los Angeles, there was an online magazine called Singularity. The idea was to offer ideas, suggestions and activities to encourage singles to live a happy and fulfilling life. The real intent of the magazine was to dissolve the stigma of living single.

I poured through the contents of the magazine for a while. In the beginning of my single journey, I was fascinated by single women in their 30s, 40s and 50s. They were fearless and powerful figures.

I wanted some of what they had because for most of my life I had wanted a live-in sexy buddy no matter the terms. Isn’t that what women were supposed to want?

It all began to change after I retired. Retirement was me, alone me, embracing the responsibility of living life to the fullest without wishing for something that wasn’t my reality. I began to feel me in all my glory. I began to think I was my own soul mate.

Flying High

When I have a date now, when I dance in Austin and meet up with my male friends, I feel confident and joyful. It’s been an evolution of sorts and change has been a constant companion.

Flying to see my family and friends in Las Vegas frequently, making travel plans to hike the Himalayas, taking a future family trip to Israel, meeting up with an old lover and having the time to create my own day, my own social scene, my quiet nights and quiet days, is my singular life.

Here are 5 suggestions for living single with joy:

  • Stay true to yourself, your values and your passions and life will be joyful and fulfilling.
  • Understand your vulnerability because recognizing your emotional landscape will give you the ability to create your life.
  • Be committed to self-reflection through the practice of meditation.
  • Find humor in practically everything, and search for the ironies in life.
  • Accept yourself completely.

Being single means practicing the art of self-love with consciousness and forgiveness. Being single means eliminating the negative and focusing on positive possibilities and opportunities. And finally, being single means remembering that life is an action, not a thought.

Life After Retirement Without a Car? It’s Easier Than You Think!

Life-After-Retirement

Like most American teenagers, I couldn’t wait to get my first driver’s license. That was more years ago than I care to admit, and I’ve had a love-hate relationship with driving ever since.

Of course, I loved the freedom driving gave me. As an adult, convenience became equally important, whether I was running to the store for a forgotten item or shepherding my children to activities or friends’ homes.

But I’m not one of those people who loves to drive. Just shout “Road Trip!” if you want to strike terror in my heart. In fact, I’d rather deal with TSA lines at the airport than spend an hour behind the wheel.

So, several years ago, my partner and I made the decision to move from suburbia to the middle of a city. This decision was also an experiment: we wanted to try to live our lives without an automobile.

That might not sound like a big decision for those of you who live in major cities like New York, Paris, Chicago or London. For the rest of us, however, life without a car is a huge adjustment, especially if you’re someone who always seems to be out of one ingredient when it’s time to make dinner.

Simple Ways to Go Anywhere Without a Car

We wanted to live like the wild and crazy kids we think we still are, so our plan was to attack the transportation issue from multiple angles.

Public Transportation

We found a home we love only a block from a streetcar line that connects us with trains and busses that take us anywhere in the city.

Public transportation is an inexpensive option made even more so by purchasing monthly or annual passes. In many cities, seniors are entitled to even greater discounts, so check with your local public transportation office.

Car Sharing Membership

We joined a car sharing service. Some of the more popular ones available in many cities are Cars2Go, ZipCar and ReachNow. They all work in a similar way: after joining, you can rent one of the company’s cars on a pay-as-you-go basis by the minute, hour or day.

Just get in and drive – not quite as convenient as having a car in your garage, but you don’t have to worry about parking fees, insurance rates or maintenance and fuel costs either.

Ridesharing Transportation

Have you tried Uber, Lyft or Wingz? We love using a smartphone app to summon a chariot whenever we need one.

Whether heading to the airport on a sunny day or to a friend’s home in the rain, the door-to-door service is both an affordable and fun way to meet local drivers who work hard to make sure you have a great and safe ride.

Walking

Pull up your step-counting app or widget, grab your sneakers and head out to your destination. Walking is a free and healthy way to get in some exercise while running errands. Also, we can go mask-less while safe-distancing.

Just don’t keep sending your partner lists of extra items for the grocery store when he has to walk home with those heavy bags! Not that I’ve ever done that…

Bicycling

Since the day we moved to our city, our preferred mode of transportation has been our bicycles. We are lucky to live in a city that values cyclists, and so I feel safe riding my bike even though I’m in my 60s – and I hope I have at least another decade of riding ahead of me.

If pedaling gets to be too much someday, I’ll switch to an electric bike with pedal-assist – because this girl loves the freedom of the open road, even if she has to share it with automobiles. Plus, cycling is great exercise!

Advantages to Car-Free Life

Do I miss the convenience of having a car anytime I want to go somewhere? Of course I do, but here’s what I don’t miss:

  • insurance payments
  • permits for parking
  • high gas prices
  • oil changes and tire rotations
  • scheduled maintenance costs
  • breaking down
  • unexpected maintenance costs
  • worrying about the safety of my parked car

The car-free lifestyle suits us. We may own a car again one day, but we aren’t in any hurry to do so in the near future. For now, we are happy to live life without a car of our own.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

What about you? Can you imagine your life without a car? Have you ever given up owning one? Do you think you’d choose to get around without one? Please join the conversation!
