Be Fabulous After 50! 5 Ways to Ensure Your Clothing Sends the Right Message

Fabulous-After-50

If your clothes could speak, what message would they be sending the world? Hopefully it’s something positive, like:

“Take me seriously. I’m a force to be reckoned with.”

“I love life and live every day to its fullest.”

But too many women – especially plus size women – have fallen into the trap of hiding behind their clothing. Their outfits whisper, “I’m ashamed of myself and my body and just hope I go unnoticed.”

It’s sad, but societal stereotypes about mature and plus size women only make it worse. But you can support the women around you and send a positive message about personal beauty and acceptance to the world. How? Let your clothes do the talking.

Step 1 – Personal Acceptance

It can be hard to say what you feel. We live in a highly critical society where others tend to dictate what is modern and trendy. Sometimes our voice gets lost in the crowd.

If you’re a plus size woman of any age, let your clothes say loud and clear how beautiful you are, inside and out. Let them express the value of diverse beauty and that you don’t have to look the same as everyone else just to be gorgeous.

Inspiring… but how do you get that message out there? Don’t be afraid to experiment a little. Instead of trying to fit into the mold of others, invent your own style. Put on clothes that make you feel good about yourself.

Fashion lets you speak volumes just by feeling comfortable in your own skin!

Step 2 – Feel Good

As a general rule, if you don’t feel good about your clothing at home in front of the mirror, you won’t feel any better when you go out in public. So take a few extra minutes to choose your outfit before you head out the door.

Everyone has positive features about their shape. Think of what you want people to notice. Maybe it’s those toned legs. Wearing a shorter skirt would tell everyone: “I can pull this off because it not only looks good on me, but I feel great inside!”

Mature women can send a similar message with soft fabrics that give you the comfort you long for while showing off your shape.

Step 3 – Feeling Visible

We all want to be noticed. Feeling like you are invisible in a crowd is a lonely place to be. So let fashion come to your aid!

Instead of wearing that same old dress you’ve had for years, try something a little more outgoing. Get that off-the-shoulder top with the ruffled trim that you’ve been eyeing. It will tell others that you are not afraid to leave your comfort zone.

Or maybe a plus size kimono in a bold batik print or unique and colorful patchwork plus size tunic that has people thinking you are not content to just blend in with the crowd. If you aren’t getting the attention you want and deserve, it’s time to break that pattern.

That’s not to say you should don a flashy, out-of-style outfit just to make a statement. Be yourself! Go for a more modern look that catches the eye, turns a few heads, and sends the message, “I look and feel amazing!”

Step 4 – Happiness

“Beauty comes in all sizes”

“I can pull this off!”

“Look at me!”

If your clothing isn’t saying this, you won’t be able to show off your inner joy. So, remember the steps! You can’t have one without the other.

A simple change in colors can make all the difference between feeling OK about yourself and being ready to take on the world. Wearing vibrant yellows and radiant reds tell the world: “I’m happy with who I am!” Add a beautiful smile and the message couldn’t be clearer.

Of course, darker colors don’t have to exude negativity either. It’s all about being true to your personality, sense of style and individual beauty.

Step 5 – Good Health

Some women immediately link the word ‘health’ with the words ‘diet’ and ‘exercise.’ But good health goes far deeper than that. Your mental and emotional health are just as important as your physical well-being.

That’s why you should wear clothes that make you feel valuable and attractive. Love yourself for who you are. Splurge a little and buy something new. It will do wonders for you and motivate you to make changes.

Make sure you’re choosing outfits because they’re what you like, not because of pressure from toxic people in your life or society in general. While some elements of the fashion industry would use style to put down women, we can make a change and use it to lift all women up.

No More Mixed Messages

Remember, let your clothes do the talking. Put on attire that makes you feel like you can conquer the world – yet is as comfortable as an old pair of jeans.

Don’t be a wallflower; let everyone know you are in the room. Look for colors and styles that make you bubble over with happiness and bolster your self-esteem.

Put these easy steps into place and you’ll send the message you want people to hear. Loud, clear, inspiring and beautiful.

Writing through the Slump – Tips for Overcoming Writer’s Block

writer's block

I must have a dozen essays sitting in my – To Be Continued – file right now. Some are the beginning of something worth finishing, while others are mere musings and early morning attempts to capture some sort of divine inspiration.

It happens to all writers eventually and occasionally; a blank mind, mid-sentence as words disintegrate into disassembled letters with no directions to put them right.

I sit paralyzed in the glow of a blank white screen, stubbornly waiting for my fingers to start tapping out something, as they have for years and most times they do.

But, when they don’t, when they lay there as though they don’t recognize the keys, motionless and waiting for instruction from a brain that is mumbling some impatient gibberish about nothing and everything all at once, it’s unnerving. It’s as though no one is in charge of getting the project started and they’re all staring, mindless and vapid, waiting for someone to step up.

What is a writer to do to spark the flame of creativity and regain some semblance of order to their random and disorganized thoughts?

I explored this topic recently. Not so much for this article as to prod my own normal routine along when I suddenly stopped writing one morning and spent the day distracted and procrastinating, fear lurking just off my right shoulder, whispering that I’d lost it. I was done. Everything I had to say had been said and no one would care.

At first, I left it alone, moving on with chores, exercise, plans and preparation for the approaching holidays. But as the days passed and deadlines for submittals to several websites loomed, I realized I was indeed in a slump, and something had to be done about it.

Here’s what I did, and what I recommend you try if, or more likely when, you hit the writing wall:

Walk It Off

Immersing myself in natural beauty and fresh air while burning off frustration with physical exercise always works for me. I find if I close the laptop, put on my hiking boots and get outside alone, with only my thoughts, eventually something surfaces.

I’ve always been innately connected to the natural world. Growing up in the country and having lots of wild places to explore as a child, I learned to be a quiet observer. There’s lots to see out there that sparks imagination and fosters new perspective on one’s own life.

I’m sure it has to do with being quiet enough to hear myself think, but it’s also physical. Raising my heart rate and getting blood circulating to my brain helps it function and that initiates thoughts, some of which, just by sheer odds, have to be worth saving and expanding upon.

I use the dictation feature on my phone to capture what shows up so when I get back to my laptop, I’ve already started, which makes facing that blank white screen far less intimidating.

Write to a Friend

I have several people around the world, with whom I correspond via email rather than zoom or phone. We write regularly and are very much in each other’s lives despite the distance. I’m not sure how we settled into this means of staying in touch, but there is something about not having to face someone directly that allows for a more intimate conversation.

When I’m struggling to write something for publication. I send off a letter to one of them instead of toiling over the incomplete work. I find directing my thoughts to a trusted confidant opens the pathways to more of what is waiting to be expressed, and I can soon go back and write without frustration.

Stick to a Schedule

Most writers I know write regularly; many have the discipline to write daily. It’s recommended for someone who is serious about writing, to write at least 1000 words a day.

I’m not sure of the science behind the practice of daily writing, but I do know it is essential for me. It’s like keeping my joints and muscles limber so my body moves more freely. When I write daily, I can write better, and more ideas come to me as I do.

So, I sit in my usual spot every morning and tap out what shows up. Even if it’s something like this article that began as a way to just write anything, and evolved into a piece for Sixty and Me.

Writing is a wonderful path to self-discovery and creativity, however at times, I find it can be difficult and frustrating. But if I stay engaged, share my thoughts and feelings elsewhere and don’t panic, without fail my creativity flows once again.

I hope using these simple techniques, yours will too.

The Importance of Having Millennials and Gen X’ers in Your Life After 60

Having-Millennials-and-Gen-Xers-in-Your-Life-after 60

Many of us have at least one younger person in our lives. Whether this is a friend or a relative, here are 5 reasons why you should hang with younger people:

  • They help you stay current with social, cultural and political trends.
  • They increase your energy and positive attitude. Being around younger people with future hopes and dreams can be infectious.
  • Anyone 10-30 years younger should still be around when you’re in your 80s and beyond.
  • Gain a surrogate son or daughter, especially if you’re childless or if your own kids are emotionally or physically distant. Some younger folks crave a mentor and benefit of your life experiences.
  • Social security! They’re paying for it. It’s in your interest to help younger people lead productive lives and pay taxes.

Finding Common Ground

The Gen Xer’s (born 1965-1976) seem to be closer to Boomers in cultural references where you can usually communicate easily and find common ground.

The Millennials (born 1977-1995), however, have a very different outlook, cultural tastes, humor and references. If you have Millennial children, you probably know the score.

There are similarities with Millennials and Boomers, though. Both generations are tending towards freelancing, part-time work and self-employment. This is a new phenomenon which also provides a bridge between generations.

The age difference seems to disappear when there are common interests, opinions and sense of humor, and that helps you relate as peers.

I have a writer friend in her mid-70s who attends a horror and Sci-fi movie Meetup with millennials and Gen X’ers. She loves their all night parties, and is matriarch of the group, advising them on their love lives.

My mother-in law, from her 70s to her 90s, maintained close friendships with a group of young antique dealers. A dollhouse collector, she was a lively, energetic personality who drank a lot of beer with those youngsters. They were devastated when she passed.

I belong to a digital sketch production collective with a talented group of 20- to 40-year-olds. With their collaboration, I wrote and produced two digital sketches this past year that aired on the site Funny or Die.

Where and How to Hang

The site Meetup is an excellent place to find groups of younger and diverse members. Consider groups that focus on fitness, film, books, arts and music.

You can also look for volunteer opportunities in your community that attract a diverse crowd. Book clubs are another avenue, although mainly consisting of women, they draw a range of ages.

When you do hang with younger people, try to not lecture-reminisce about the good old days unless you’re asked to. I catch myself, all the time, making references to an old TV show, song or a musical group. I preface it, “before your time” and ensure it’s relevant and relatable.

You should stay away from talk about health or anything ‘aging’ related. Also avoid money discussions. You may be in a very different financial situation than younger folks just starting out.

Pace yourself if you’re taking part in a physical activity, and don’t be ashamed to limit your movements. Usually, they are in far better shape than you.

Listen and learn some of their lingo. You’ll hear expressions like, ‘lit’ (drunk), ‘bae’ (significant other), ‘fleek’ (good), and new meanings for old terms like ‘hipster.’

I was caught unaware at a party when told to stop talking and freeze for the “Mannequin Challenge” where someone takes a group photo and posts it online.

Working with and Leading Younger Teams and Reporting to a Younger Person

Until a year ago, I managed teams of collectors across the globe. At one point, I managed staff from age 20 to 70 in one team. Team synergy was a challenge, but became possible after leveraging strengths and understanding each person’s expectations and goals.

Hanging on to those Millenials was tough but was made possible when they felt challenged, appreciated and in tune with the team/corporate strategy.

The Millennials are tech savvy, resilient and nomadic. They have different expectations, need to feel appreciated, and believe in corporate social responsibility. I often joke that the Boomers generally didn’t care about what their companies were up to as long as they got their paychecks and pensions.

If your younger manager is smart, they will draw on your expertise and experience. Younger managers may be threatened, though, when they realize you have a treasure trove of skills and tribal knowledge.

I reported to a Gen X’er who was savvy and sought my advice and counsel. I was ready for a career change, but she had a longer runway than me. I was determined to help her succeed. She is the best boss I ever had.

A Richer Life Experience and Friends to End

Having a circle of friends and colleagues of a range of ages has enriched my life. I am thrilled when they seek out my advice or if they just want to hang out.

There’s a chance some of these younger folk will seek me out even in my advanced years. Hopefully, I can say, “Even though many friends are dead, I have others that are very much alive!”

Nail-Aid Keratin Treatment

Per the 23,000 five-star ratings, this treatment rivals all the rest out there. Just take it from this one fan: “I tried every nail strengthener I could find and none of them worked…Within days of using it, my nails were noticeably stronger,” they wrote. “I have been using it for a few weeks now and my nails stopped flaking and the thumb nail hasn’t cracked at all—it is longer than it has been in YEARS.”

Others are “beyond surprised” by their results—growth after one application, no more breakage or hang nails—while others have been “dedicated” to the product for over 10 years.

Another reviewer called the treatment the “bees knees,” writing “I have super brittle nails that are kind of oddly shaped and break so dang easy. It doesn’t help that I have had my nails done for years and years and years. This stuff seriously works. My nails don’t break anymore and they are getting stronger and more even by the day.”

Simply apply two coats over clean, dry nails and follow with your preferred nail color (or opt to wear the treatment all on its own). To reap the best results, the brand advises re-applying every three days.

Six Gift Ideas for Active Walkers

gift ideas for keen walkers

Are you looking for novel or interesting gifts for your friends and family? Are any of them keen walkers? Would you like to buy them practical gifts that they will enjoy using?

Keep reading – we’re here to help with some great gift ideas for those regular (or occasional) walkers in your life.

Hopefully, these ideas will help you buy useful gifts for your friends and family. We think you’ll want to put a few of these items on your list too!

Walking Poles

Not to be confused with walking sticks, poles are a great piece of exercise equipment. They look like ski poles and are suitable for improving fitness and adding extra support for people who are struggling with their balance.

Walking poles can help turn a regular walk into a workout, as you tend to walk faster and use more of your upper body.

For people who get tired when they walk, poles can help them to walk faster and for longer. This can help people to keep up with speedier walking companions or groups.

If you sometimes feel unsteady on your feet when you walk, poles can help you to feel more confident – especially when walking on uneven surfaces or up and down hills.

Base Layer

This piece of clothing that you wear next to your skin – usually a top, but you can get leggings too – helps regulate your temperature.

The material helps to wick sweat away from your body, which means you keep cool in summer and warm in winter.

Anyone who spends time outdoors, e.g., walking or gardening, will benefit from a base layer.

Base layers can be made of merino wool, silk or other materials. Cotton is not recommended as a base layer as it retains moisture for a long time.

Base layers make lovely gifts for the walkers in your life.

Cushioned Socks

I love receiving socks, but I know some people think they’re a bit dull. Stick with me though – we’re not talking novelty avocado socks here…

Cushioned socks protect and support your feet. They keep your feet more comfortable and reduce the risk of rubbing and pain.

Cushioned socks can also help to wick away moisture and absorb shock on high-impact activities or uneven terrain.

If your friends or family are regular walkers, cushioned socks could be an excellent gift for them.

Foot Rollers or Massage Balls

Staying with the feet, foot rollers and massagers are great gifts for regular walkers (and keen exercisers).

Foot rollers are small tubes, often with a textured or spiky exterior. The balls are pretty hard and sometimes have bumps or spikes on them.

What do you do with them, though? You just roll your feet back and forth and round and round, applying pressure all over the foot.

The rolling and pressure improve circulation and stimulate blood flow in the foot. This relaxes and loosens tight muscles and ligaments in the foot. It can reduce discomfort and your risk of foot pain, injuries and complaints, e.g., plantar fasciitis.

Reducing tightness in the foot’s soft tissues can also help with ankle stability, promoting better balance and safer walking.

It feels great, too – try one out yourself if you can!

Relax and Recover

Everyone needs some relaxation, especially if they are very active. Rest and recovery are crucial elements of all good exercise routines. They lend themselves to lots of fabulous gifts too.

I suggest massage vouchers, bath salts, aromatherapy diffusers or pillow sprays (to promote deep and restful sleep).

People often struggle to buy these thoughtful gifts for themselves, so they will be appreciated even more.

Vouchers or Class Passes

Perhaps your friend has all the clothes and gear they might need but would like help or support.  Could you get them vouchers or passes to a gym or class studio near their home? If they prefer to exercise at home, how about buying them an online membership?

There are many options online, but make sure you choose one with specialist instructors available to answer questions and provide support and guidance.

The Vida Wellness Studio is an online exercise studio for people who want to improve their balance, feel stronger and move more easily. Members enjoy a library of clear, easy-to-follow exercise videos, professional advice, support, and encouragement from fellow members.

Here’s a short Better Balance taster video from the Vida Wellness Studio for you:

I hope we’ve given you some interesting ideas for gifts. Perhaps you’ll even treat yourself!
