I don’t usually write a love story to a man I have never met, but Ralph Lauren has been my crush for decades. I can’t help myself. Let me share with you some things that keep that love story alive.
Like many women, I’ve experimented with different looks and designers, but I always return to Ralph Lauren. His preppy look, exemplified by his iconic polo shirts and tailored blazers, is my go-to style. I made my first purchase as a teen, and even then, I could see that Ralph Lauren was more than just a label. It was a lifestyle brand that epitomized classic American style that transcended age and trends. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Moreover, as time has passed, I’ve found that his fashions look just as good on 60-somethings as on younger women. It’s clear that Ralph Lauren designs with more than one demographic in mind, avoiding overly trendy pieces that are ruffly, sheer, skimpy, or simply too “girly.” With Lauren, you’ll never risk looking like you raided your daughter’s closet.
Looking to add a few new pieces to my summer wardrobe, I recently stopped into the newly renovated Ralph Lauren department of my local Macy’s in Manhasset, New York. The shelves and display tables were brimming with items (in regular and petite sizes) in cheerful colors and floral prints – so big this season.
There were cotton slacks and jeans in lightweight denim, linen tops, and brightly colored button-downs. Rounding out the summer styles were halter tops and breezy dresses. Best of all, some of these stylish, high-quality pieces were already on sale at a whopping 30-40% off.
One of my purchases that day was a blue and white patchwork button-down blouse in soft cotton. It’s a versatile blouse that will take me well into fall. I also purchased a sleeveless pointelle knit top in a color called winter cream. And I couldn’t resist buying a pair of patched jeans in the palest blue denim – a fun summertime splurge – that adds a playful touch to my wardrobe.
While shopping, I chatted with Elizabeth Heins, a brand manager for Ralph Lauren, about Lauren’s appeal to the mature woman. “What keeps them coming back?” I asked. She cited the powerful role of nostalgia, noting that the classic pieces, with their tried and true fit and quality, updated seasonally with a modern twist, evoke a strong sense of connection and sentimentality.

Tailored Blazers
A well-fitted blazer can elevate any outfit. Ralph Lauren’s blazers, with their impeccable tailoring and quality fabrics, are a staple essential for any polished wardrobe. I have several in black (single and double-breasted) and a blue nautical-inspired blazer. Worn with a tee or button-down shirt – depending on the season – a blazer can take you anywhere. At this time of year, I get a lot of use out of my light gray linen jacket, which has served me well for 10 summers and counting.
Button-Down Shirts
Crisp, white button-down shirts are a must-have. They are the quintessential wardrobe item staple. Dressed up with a skirt or slacks, or down with a pair of jeans, they offer endless styling possibilities. For summer, the racks were filled with lightweight cotton and linen button-downs in vivid colors, offering a comfortable and relaxed feel. Roll up the sleeves for an effortless, laid-back summer look, perfect for enjoying a casual summer day.
Jeans
You can easily build an entire wardrobe around RL jeans, pairing them with a blazer, polo shirt, button down, or sweater. Designed to comfortably fit and flatter, no matter a woman’s size and shape, these jeans come in a wide variety of styles and colors: straight-leg, cropped, mid-rise, high-rise, boot cut, vintage and skinny jeans. Bea Ozcayir, a merchandiser rotator for Ralph Lauren at the store, told me that the company’s “mid-rise jeans are one of our best sellers,” adding that “the colors don’t fade.”
The Sweater Set
From cable-knit pullover sweaters to cashmere cable-knit cardigans, Lauren’s knitwear is cozy and contemporary. These pieces are perfect for layering and add a touch of luxury to everyday outfits. Short-sleeve lightweight knits in pastels, floral prints, and bold colors of gold, teal, and royal blue abound for summer, as do soft cream-colored hues.
Elegant Dresses
Whether you’re looking for a casual dress for everyday wear, something dressier for a night out, or a special occasion dress, Lauren has got you covered. Choices include the classic little black dress, a shirtdress, or a flowing maxi dress, you’ll find something to suit your needs. My RL black sheath, a personal favorite, has served me well over the years and has been as appropriate at a funeral as at a wedding.

Color, Patterns and Lauren’s Signature Logo
Lauren is known for using classic neutrals like navy, white, and black in his designs, but he also incorporates vibrant colors and patterns such as stripes, plaids, and florals – a big part of RL’s summer collection. These patterns can add interest and depth to your outfits. The Ralph Lauren signature logo, too, is part of the brand’s aesthetic. No matter their age, “it makes people feel well-dressed,” Ozcayir remarked.
Incorporating Accessories and Equestrian Elements
Ralph Lauren often draws inspiration from the equestrian world – think leather belts, scarves, hats and boots. Not just for the horsey set, these accessories can add a unique edge to any outfit and are ideal for pairing with jeans.
By investing in these pieces, and embracing color and patterns, women of all ages can create a chic and versatile wardrobe that stands the test of time. Lauren himself has said in interviews, “I believe in clothes that last, that are not dated.”
