Since You’re Afraid to Ask—Yes, Eye Creams Actually Work

In the immortal words of Ice Cube, today was a good day. Why you ask? I actually remembered to put on eye cream. Admittedly, I’m still a skeptic in recovery. Less than a year ago, you couldn’t convince me it was anything but an unnecessary purchase that added some benefit to the face but ultimately didn’t have to be in my routine. Do eye creams work? I guess it depends on your expectations. If it’s to make those dark circles disappear in a few short days, you’ll be disappointed fast. If it’s to completely reverse the effects of bad habits that take years to die, well, don’t kill the messenger. You know the answer isn’t good either.

There is, however, an art to putting on eye cream which may sound a bit pretentious, but considering just how complex our skin is, I would argue that I’m not saying enough. But since I know time is money and you want to know if this stuff is actually worth the extra couple dollars in your budget, let’s get into why eye cream is made in the first place, what does the best job of addressing those setbacks and how we should be applying them to our face.

Why Do We Need Them?

If our skin is a work of art, some maintenance is required, right? Masterpieces in the MoMA are guarded with a lock and key, so we should be treating our face the same, especially the skin around our eye which happens to be thinnest and consequentially, the most damage-prone. It’s an easy enough concept to understand, but we usually don’t grasp it until we’re older and wiser with the fine lines and sunspots to show for it.  (I seriously wish younger me wore sunscreen as much as she wore tanning oil.)

Like a painting or carefully constructed bungalow in the Californian desert, three very specific factors affect the luminosity of skin around the eye: color, reflection and shape.

Color

As far as color is concerned, light changes and reveals the skin. Specifically, it’s a kaleidoscope of chromatic undertones that can cause a slew of visible changes to the eye area. “The red and violet chromatic disturbances are particularly visible under the eyes,” says Dr. Jacqueline Hill, Director of Strategic Innovation and Science for La Prairie. “Leakage of blood from the capillaries to the surrounding tissues, followed by oxidation of the blood, also adds to the under-eye darkness.”

If you really want to geek out, here’s a breakdown of how and why each color becomes visible in the under-eye area according to Dr. Hill:

  • Grey: as a result of pollution particles accumulating on the skin surface. This gives a dull and sad look to the expression.
  • Brown: due to the accumulation of the brown pigment melanin in the epidermis. This leads to irregular pigmentation and age spots.
  • Yellow: due to the accumulation of glycated collagen fibers in the dermis. This gives a sallow, unhealthy look to the skin.
  • Red: as a result of blood capillaries dilated by chronic silent inflammation. This leads to irregular diffuse redness.
  • Violet: dark under-eye-shadows are mainly the result of both oxygenated and especially de-oxygenated hemoglobin from blood capillaries. The de-oxygenated blood appearing bluish because it is low in oxygen. This gives a tired and sad look to the face.

Reflection and Shape

Uneven texture, sagging and fine lines are common complaints about aging skin, all of which can be boiled down to one word: shape. It’s a part of life, but let’s be real: it’s not always fun to come to terms with, especially if you know you could’ve taken better care of your skin beforehand.

According to Dr. Hill, the rough surface is caused by dehydration (aka not enough moisture), poor skin barrier (aka not enough sunscreen and antioxidants) and irregular desquamation (aka peeling). As a result, the “skin looks dry and dull, feels uncomfortable and generally, processes are slowed down due to lack of water.”

Like a ripple effect, this loosens the density and thickness of that skin as protein fibers break down and take longer to renew themselves. Over time, those fine lines start to settle in, the skin starts sagging beyond its natural pace and loses its luminosity, otherwise known as reflection.

Eye bags can also form prematurely “due to the accumulation of fluids and fat under the eyes caused by poor drainage and lack of microcirculation. Sunscreen and eye cream sounds a lot more appealing now, huh?

The Fixer-Uppers

Stick with me herehelp is on the way, in the form of active ingredients. There is a lot to choose from, but according to Dr. Hill, the most effective ones are…

For Color: peptides, age spot inhibitors and antioxidants for a brighter complexion

The peptides specifically address those red and violet chromatic disturbances I already mentioned, while antioxidants protect the skin barrier from the elements and inhibitors prevent the overproduction of melanin, thus leading to dark spots.

For Reflection and Shape: ingredients packed with ceramides, omega fatty acids and amino acids for firmness and suppleness.

Again, there are plenty of eye cream options, both expensive and affordable, that claim to provide the benefits of these ingredients which are admittedly pretty common. So what sets a brand like La Prairie apart? Simply put, a lot of research, some clinical trials and patented innovations that take benefits to a whole other level.

For instance, La Prairie’s White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire is made with Lumidose, a highly potent active (with 90 patents!) that fights age spots and was developed over 15 years of research and 50,000 ingredient screenings before going public. There’s also the brand’s signature luxe ingredient, golden caviar extract renewably sourced from Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, a type of fish found in the Caspian Sea.

According to Dr. Hill, it’s “rich in lipids such as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, as well as sugars, amino acids and minerals, and helps increase the formation of ceramides in epidermal cells and collagen in dermal cells.” All of these improve the smoothness of the skin as well as luminosity and firmness. Lastly, at the heart of every La Prairie skincare product is an exclusive cellular complex that uses cutting-edge research to put life and energy back into the cells that make up our skin by targeting the most essential skin cells.

And of course, all of these ingredients are clinically tested once combined to create a product.

The Application

Generally speaking, eye cream should be applied every morning and night around the eye, but not too close to it. After cleansing your face, gently apply cream around the eye, starting at the inner corner and moving toward the temple. From the temple, continue the gesture back along the brow bone to the inner corner. Most experts recommend dabbing with your ring finger since it applies the least amount of pressure, though you can do the same thing with a fancy took like the ceramic pearl applicator on La Prairie’s White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire.

Once the cream is distributed and sitting on top of your skin–whether you’re using a tool or not–start under the eye at the inner corner, dab or roll toward the temples and then above the brow bone and back to the crease between the eyes. “Once you reach the bridge of the nose, continue the gesture back towards the outer corner by rolling the ceramic pearl along the lower brow line. Continue along the upper cheekbone to the inner corner of the eye to finally return up to the crease between the eyes,” says Dr. Hill. “Stroke the crease in an up-and-down movement three times. One last time, roll the ceramic pearl along the upper line of the brow to the temple. Press gently and release. Repeat the entire circuit twice more.”

If you’re a visual learner, make sure you screenshot this chart, especially if your eye cream of choice is La Prairie’s:

All in all, eye cream is worth the investment. Just make it worth your while by using it correctly, whether you prefer something from the department store or drugstore.

Christie Brinkley is Living Her Best Life at 66 – And You Can, Too!

Christie Brinkley is Living Her Best Life at 66 – And You Can, Too

As we progress through our lives, birthdays often become
something that we regard with apathy and indifference or worse yet, dread.

But, if we are lucky enough, these mile markers will
continue to come around each year…so, why not find a way to celebrate our age
rather than shame it?

Christie Brinkley, 66, is the perfect role model for not
only embracing our age but celebrating it with joy and gratitude.

Looking Back

Perhaps you’ve heard the advice to never look back in life
and always forage ahead, looking towards the future.

While this advice certainly has it merits, there is
something to be said for occasionally looking back on all that we have
accomplished, endured, and overcome in the past year.

Which is exactly what Christie Brinkley did as she happily began her 66th year. Proving that life is full of surprises, Brinkley kicked off her 66th birthday on February 2nd by popping out of cake, captioning an Instagram post with, “I never would have guessed that I would start my 66th year of life popping out of a cake! But that’s EXACTLY what I did as Guest Ringmaster in NYC’s own Circus!”

Her Instagram caption continued on to share highlights from
her past year, saying, “In fact my whole past year has been filled with so many
incredible milestones! From reprising my role as Roxie Hart on Broadway! And
headlining the show in Las Vegas! I went [on] Dancing with the Stars and
foxtrotted over to ABC’s hit show The Goldberg’s season premiere where I
reprised my role as The Girl in the red Ferrari from the classic hit film Vacation!
I harvested grapes from the Bellissima vineyard in Italy and watched my
children’s careers and passions blossom! 🎂.”

While we may not all be able to enjoy such lavish
experiences in our own lives, Brinkley’s caption serves as the perfect reminder
that looking back on the special moments and experiences from the past year can
be extremely fulfilling and joy-inducing.

Looking Forward

Just as looking back can help foster gratitude, looking
forward is equally important!

Reminding ourselves that life is full of surprises and
remaining open to all of the possibilities that life presents to us is one of
the best ways to live each year to the fullest.

Not one to only look backwards, Brinkley closed out her
birthday Instagram post by saying,
“I can’t wait to see what exciting #milestonesofme await for 2020! With age
comes wisdom and confidence which I find to be liberating! I also know I feel
my best when I look as good as I feel.”

With each passing year, as Brinkley aptly points out, we’re
each given the gift of growing wiser, more experienced, and hopefully, getting
to know ourselves just a little bit better. Rather than focusing on the numeric
value of our age or an additional gray hair or wrinkle, why not focus on the
lessons learned, the smiles shared, and the wisdom we’ve acquired?

Let’s all take a cue from Brinkley and how she celebrates
her birthdays with equal amounts of gratitude for the past and excitement for
the future, embracing each passing year with open arms.

Furthermore, Brinkley’s daughter, Alexa Rae Joel, 34,
admires the way that her “ageless, tireless, dauntless Golden Supermom”
approaches not only her birthdays, but life in general, commenting, “…I’m in
awe of how my mother jumps headfirst into life without pause. She’s not afraid
to put herself in a position where she may even be — dare I say — ‘laughed at’
by the cold cynics of the world. Anything you’re terrified of tackling?
Anything that scares the bloody daylights out of you? I guarantee you: If Mom
hasn’t already tried it, she’ll be first in line to do so.”

We applaud your zest for birthdays – and life – and wish you
the Happiest of Birthdays, Christie! Thanks for being a superb role model for
us all!

How do you celebrate your birthday? Do you have any
birthday traditions that help to make your birthday special? If you were to
look back on your past year of life, what milestones stand out the most? Share

The Best Clarifying Shampoos to Blast Away Product Buildup

You probably already know that limiting the number of shampoo sessions you partake in each week offers a slew of hair-enhancing benefits, including helping to extend the life of your hair color, preventing breakage, reversing split ends and reducing frizz. Then, there’s the so-called “No Poo,” method, in which anti-shampoo advocates take this approach to the next level and avoid the stuff altogether. While we’re impressed by such an extreme commitment, for the majority of people, forgoing shampoo for all eternity isn’t exactly a desirable way of life. Fortunately, if you’re merely looking to cut back on shampooing and switch to a once-a-week washing routine, using a clarifying shampoo can make the transition go much more seamlessly. Clarifying shampoos will help your hair stay grease-free for much longer compared the results you’d reap from a normal or hydrating option, and they’ll also keep your scalp healthy, fostering accelerated hair growth to boot.

I personally only wash my hair once a week (unless I’ve been working out, that is), with the hopes of delaying the fading process of my pricey blonde highlights, and to be honest, because I’m also just lazy. With that being said, because my tresses only get washed each Friday, I make sure my shampoo sesh is aggressive enough to keep my hair looking and smelling clean for the entire week. This means using a “harsher” shampoo that’s capable of going to town on a week’s worth of product buildup, oil, and sebum my locks and scalp have accumulated over the workweek is paramount. In fact, I even give my hair a “double cleanse,” if you will, using a clarifying shampoo to target grime and grease, followed with a second wash using my beloved violet shampoo to combat brass. Clarifying shampoos can be drying on your hair and they can fade color-treated hair faster than your average formula, but we’ve found a few options that won’t destroy your colorist’s work or leave your feeling brittle.

These 3 Life Lessons Taught Me to Be Resilient

These 3 Life Lessons Taught Me to Be Resilient

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” — Maya Angelou

Do you ever
wonder how you’ve made it this far with everything life’s thrown at you and continues
to toss your way?

You might credit
your staying power to luck or to chance. You might thank divine intervention.
Maybe all of the above.

Regardless of why, you’re still
standing. Take a moment to celebrate that. Because by the time we’re 60, we
bear the scars of countless situations that have tested our resolve. Through them
all, we remain resilient.

Bouncing back
might be innate, something we carry in our DNA that’s linked to our survival
instinct. I’ve known many young people with unshakeable steadfastness that they
surely must have brought with them into this world. Bouncing back is also
a decision, something we set our minds to despite the odds.

Resilience is a
muscle we develop over the course of our lives and strengthen every time a
soul-searing circumstance gives us an opportunity to use it. I was
certainly made stronger by three simple lessons that continue to inform me
today.

Just Let It Go

Remember the meme
that circulated a while back of a butterfly tied to a boulder, trying to drag
it around? The caption said Note to self:
let stuff go.
(That’s the G-rated version, but you get the idea.)

This lesson took
me years to embrace. I used to have a hot button for needing to be right,
especially when I was convinced the other person was wrong.

I’d rewind events
or conversations in my mind on a loop, playing alternate endings and
changing the dialogue to what it “should” have been. Surprise… that
didn’t change anything except how soundly I slept at night. Such a waste of
energy and time.

Letting go still
takes practice. Fortunately, each new day brings another chance to accept
rather than resist those things we can’t influence or control. The baggage
of what used to be or what should have been were just stories I told myself. Releasing
their heaviness lightens your life.

You Can’t Lose
What You Never Had

Even though it
often feels otherwise, you really can’t lose what you never had. In my youth,
this lesson played out in all the jobs, relationships, or opportunities that I
almost had or that almost happened. The ones that got away. How I’d mourn
those losses!

Except that was a
myth. Those people or situations weren’t mine to lose because, for various
reasons, they weren’t really mine to start with. I wasn’t grieving things that
slipped out of my grasp but rather those things I’d never been promised in the
first place. I made myself miserable over “almosts.”

That bitter pill
has become easier to swallow with the passing years. Mourning what
might have been and resisting the need to let go are cousins, and they’re no
match for my resilience these days.

Trust Yourself

Bouncing back
from anything is easier when we believe that all will be well or that all
is happening for the right reasons. It’s impossible to develop elasticity if we
can’t develop trust.

Sometimes we
trust a higher power. Knowing the universe has your back is
a comfort in troubling circumstances.

Sometimes we
trust in another person. Asking for help or sharing our burden with someone
else plays a big part in strengthening our resilience. It’s only in recent
years that I’ve become comfortable doing that.

Self-trust is
essential, too. Often, as a young person, I fell in line behind someone else’s
plans for me rather than listen to my own inner guidance system. So, sometimes I
needlessly learned my lessons the hard way.

Self-trust is
partly a feeling of no longer caring what others think, a feeling that takes
root in this stage of life. Self-trust is also a certainty and an awareness
that develop over time.

By the time we’re
50 or 60, we know ourselves better than anyone else knows us. We’re self-aware
and understand what we truly need. And we trust ourselves to make our own
best decisions.

We’ve also learned
that no decision ruins us. Given enough time, support, and trust we usually
rebound from our mistakes with new wisdom. That’s resilience.

Helen Keller’s
words are inspiring: “Although the
world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”

Whatever lessons
or practices have helped us come this far, we’re still here. And we’re stronger
for all we’ve been through, flexing our resilience muscles along the way.

What life lessons taught you about your
resilience and your ability to bounce back? Let’s have a conversation!

3 Ways to Add Red to Your Outfits as a Mature Woman – from the Bold to the Subtle

3 Ways to Add Red to Your Outfits as a Mature Woman – from the Bold to the Subtle

“I want to wear red, but it scares me to stand out!”

I’ve been designing clothing for women
– specifically in plus sizes – for decades. And this common refrain about
wearing red is something I’ve heard time and time again.

As you get older and your personal
style begins to change, you may find that you’re less ambitious when it comes
to fashion. You want to look your best – beautiful, elegant, sexy – but perhaps
in a more subdued way.

That isn’t the case for everyone. If
you’re a bold and gorgeous woman over 50 who wants to show off vivacious colors
in your wardrobe, more power to you!

So instead of shying away from adding
red to your outfits, learn to make this beautiful color work for you. It can
enhance your personal style – whether that’s strong and bold or delicate and
subtle.

Go Bold with a Crimson Red Tunic

A strong red color – like crimson –
pairs great with basic black. Keep everything else about your outfit simple and
let one piece in a powerful red tone do all the talking.

A great way to do that is with a crimson red tunic. A subtle print over the deep red will add a softer touch to the outfit without cutting down on the bold color.

Pair your standout red piece with
subtle jewelry for an outfit that looks great anywhere. Dress up your tunic
with fine metal jewelry. Or keep it fun and casual with chunky accessories that
either match the red of your tunic or complement the black in your outfit.

Going bold with red is not always easy
for plus size women who have been made to feel like they should disappear
behind their outfits. No way! If you adore this color, show it off! You’ll love
the confidence boost you get from looking your best in beautiful, bold red.

Step Up a Simple Outfit with Red Accessories

Not ready to make a bold red color the
centerpiece of your outfit? No problem. You can keep your outfit simple – in
neutral colors – but step up the interest with red accessories.

If you’re keeping it casual, chunky
red jewelry is the way to go. You can choose a simple beaded design with
matching earrings, necklace, and bracelets.

To add some more visual appeal, look
for creative geometric designs. Or mix and match the shapes and sizes of your
necklaces and bracelets. A little variety – plus a beautiful shade of red –
will take your outfit from simple to stunning.

Keep It Subtle with a Softer Red

Crimson red is not your only option.
There are lots of beautiful shades of red that are subtler, but no less
flattering or appealing. If going bold is not your preference, choose a more
delicate red to enhance your wardrobe.

One nice way to achieve this look is with a dressy burgundy cardigan. It can be worn over a black top and bottom to create an interesting color combination that doesn’t leap out like more attention-getting hues.

Look for an item that mixes a variety
of shades of red and perhaps a simple pattern to keep the color understated but
still impressive.

Burgundy is an excellent choice for formal wear. But there are many other subtle, soft reds that work in both dressy and casual outfits. Try a pastel red with white neutrals for a fresh vibe. Or tea rose red that’s light while still offering a beautiful red tone.

Adding more red to your outfits is a
great way to mix up your style and introduce a gorgeous color palette. But
don’t feel pressured to go too bold or too subtle. Use these tips to create a
look that’s perfect for you – with a combination of colors that complements
your personal look.

Which shade of red is your favorite?
How do you wear it? Has anyone tried to hint at you not to include it in your
wardrobe? Does red make you feel bold and beautiful? Please share your thoughts
