Why Do People Say What They Do in Their Final Hours Before Death?

Why Do People Say What They Do in Their Final Hours Before Death

Many years ago, I was visiting a friend’s
house, having just heard that her husband was in his last few days. She was not
a close friend, but I knew them both as part of the Quaker community I belonged
to at that time.

Preparing to Dock

Entering his bedroom, his wife quietly spoke
into my ear, “He’s been saying some odd things recently, so don’t worry if he
doesn’t make much sense.”

I didn’t know what she was talking about, but
I nodded and walked over to his bedside. Geoff was lying on his back, eyes closed,
but they opened when he heard me near him.

His mouth opened slowly.

“Ask Janet to ring ahead for the location of
the berthing place, will you?”

I nodded my head, glad I had been primed. I
didn’t know what he was talking about, but later when I told Janet, she
exclaimed: “That’s what he used to say whenever we were sailing and coming into
the harbour!”

We looked at each other and knew he was
telling her that his time was nearly up.

Counting Down

Then eight years ago, when my husband was in the
hospital, he told the friend who was staying overnight with him that he wanted
to watch TV. She switched it on but could not find the programme he wanted – Countdown.

When she told me about this interaction later
that day, I realised it was a very personal message to me.

Countdown was a favourite of Philip’s, and him
requesting this, after having spent six weeks in the hospital completely
disinterested in the television, could only mean one thing – that he was
‘counting down’ and preparing to die.

Final Words Bear Subconscious Meaning

Once you understand the use of language
towards the end of life, you can listen out for a message in the ‘under-language’
of a sentence, and this can be very comforting.

The authors of Final Gifts, hospice nurses Callanan and Kelley,
highlighted that many use the metaphor of travel to indicate that somehow their
subconscious knows what is happening.

If we want to create a world where death is
considered a normal part of life, instead of the taboo or even aberration it is
sometimes thought to be in the Western world, then we need to become more
familiar with the language used around death.

Not just in our conversations, though ‘saying
it like it is’ and being brave enough to talk about all end of life matters at
any point is important, but also in the language that the dying themselves use.

When we are aware of their more hidden
messages, we can respond appropriately. For instance, I told my husband that I
had heard he was looking for Countdown and though we couldn’t find it on
the television I knew he was ‘counting down’ and I was okay with that – in
other words, I was giving him permission to go.

It may not be easy on us to hear those words
of preparation, but they are also a relief of sorts. Knowing that our loved one
is ready for the next stage is comforting.

Do you have experience of someone dying and
speaking in message form to you? What words did they use and what did it mean
to you? Please share with our community!

7 Secrets to Keeping Your Hair Healthy, While Aging on Your Own Terms

7 Secrets to Keeping Your Hair Healthy, While Aging on Your Own Terms

There’s no magic potion that will prevent us from
aging (unfortunately), but that doesn’t mean you can’t age gracefully. While
taking care of your skin will definitely help keep you looking younger and
healthier, it goes hand-in-hand with good hair care.

With age, hair becomes thinner, drier, duller, and
grayer. Luckily, these issues are a lot easier to manage than wrinkles, and you
can see the results quickly. It doesn’t take a lot of time or money to
implement these steps into your routine, and for the results, it’s well worth
it!

Take Supplements

As we age, we tend to have less of an appetite as
eating certain types of food can be difficult on our body and teeth. While it
might seem like you’re getting all of the vitamins and nutrients your body needs,
chances are good you have some nutritional gaps in your diet.

While it might not be as good as getting the nutrients directly from food, taking biotin vitamin supplements can help keep your body and hair healthy. Look for supplements that include:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin B7
  • Vitamin B3

These are all key to promoting hair growth and
strength. You should also make sure you’re getting an ample amount of protein
in your diet as hair is made from protein.

Get Regular Trims

No matter how well you take care of your hair, the
longer it gets, the more chance you have of damaging it. This is doubly true in
the winter when the dry cold air further dries out your hair. To maintain a
healthy mane, trim off a couple inches every 6 to 8 weeks.

If your hair is thinning, you should look into
hairstyles that can give you the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
Generally, shorter hairstyles tend to look better. There are plenty of sites
you can check out for a variety of styles. Find the one you like the best and
discuss it with your stylist for best results.

Splurge on Good Hair Products

Your hair deals with a lot of factors on a daily basis
– from the sun to wind to pollution to more! It’s no
wonder that it can look a bit dull if you don’t pay attention to it. There’s no
reason you have to spend a lot of money to keep it healthy and shiny, but you
should invest in some good products.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Look for cleansing
products that tout hydration and moisturizing. Avoid anything that contains
parabens, sodium laurel and laureth sulfate, and isopropyl alcohol.

Leave-In Conditioner

You don’t need to use it
every night, but a leave-in conditioner can really give your hair a boost in
hydration. Some even have UV protection.

Silk Pillowcase

While technically not a
hair product, a silk pillowcase leads to less tangles and snares, which means
less breakage.

Essential Oils

Used before or after a
shower (depending on the kind you get) essential oils provide your hair with
nutrients and a nice protective layer against the elements, leaving your locks
glossy and strong.

Brush Gently

There’s no reason to brush 100 strokes a day (and in
fact brushing too much can actually be damaging), but you should take the time
to brush your hair even if it’s short. A good brush can distribute the natural
oils from your scalp to your hair evenly, leaving it nice and shiny.

When brushing your hair, start at the ends of the
strands and work out any tangles/knots with your fingers first. After you have
gotten rid of any snags, use a soft boar bristle brush to work from your roots
to the ends.

A good brushing can help improve healthy blood flow,
which could encourage hair growth and thickness.

Avoid Drying Products

A lot of hairspray, gel, and mousse products contain
alcohol, which can make your hair dry and brittle. Luckily, there are plenty of
options nowadays that don’t contain these drying ingredients. Look for products
for curly hair as they tend to be more moisturizing or create your own DIY
holding products.

Cooler showers can also help in your battle against
dry hair. A hot shower might feel great, but it’s incredibly bad for your scalp
and your skin! If you’re used to hot showers, try to bring the temperature down
gradually as you get used to cooler water.

Reduce Stress

A big reason for hair loss is stress. Try to reduce
your stress levels as much as possible by taking up things like meditation,
yoga, or even deep-breathing exercises.

Set aside 30 minutes a day to clear your mind of
distractions and instead focus on mindfulness. You’ll walk away feeling more
refreshed and your hair and body will thank you.

See Your Doctor

If you’re experiencing serious hair loss, you should
absolutely reach out to your doctor to figure out the reason. Not only can they
offer treatments for hair loss, they can also check to see if there are medical
causes to this condition, such as anemia, autoimmune disorders, or side effects
to certain medications.

It might not seem like something serious, but you
won’t know unless you ask. And the sooner you learn the cause the better for
you.

What are some tips you’ve discovered for keeping your
mane healthy and happy? What supplements do you take for strong hair and nails?
Let’s discuss more in the comments below!

Stuck at Home 20 Things to Do if You’re Over 65 Trying to Avoid the Coronavirus (Covid-19)

Up
until now, I’ve haven’t written too much about the coronavirus (covid-19) outbreak.
But, after much soul-searching, I decided that I had an obligation to help all
of you to get through this difficult time.

Of
course, there are practical
things that we can do to lower our coronavirus risk

global crisis, like the one that we are facing requires more than just keeping
our bodies safe; we also have to keep our minds and souls happy; we need to
stay positive so that we have the strength to face each day.

Write. Start that Memoir… or Just Write a Poem or Letter

Putting your thoughts on paper can really help to remove stress from your life. I love the autobiographical journal called the Book of Me!

technique is to write down your concerns at the end of each night and leave
them on the bedside table. They will be there in the morning for you, so, there’s

Tarte Dropped A Full-Body Shape Tape Aimed At Stretch Marks & Age Spots

Tarte’s Shape Tape Contour Concealer is so popular, it makes sense the brand would want to expand on the franchise. A few months ago, the Glow Wand was released and now, Tarte Shape Tape Waterproof Body Makeup just might be your new favorite. We haven’t gotten a chance to try the new body product yet but so far, it looks really legit. Although we might not all be out and about right now, the body perfector comes just in time for summer temperatures and, ahem, smaller clothes to come.

First, it’s important to note that there’s nothing wrong with stretch marks, age spots or varicose veins. We’re not supposed to have Instagram-filtered legs IRL. But beauty is all about choice and there might be an occasion you want to blur out any skin discoloration on your body. Tarte’s Body Makeup is a vegan, full-coverage formula that’s meant to look and feel just like skin. Afraid you’ll sit down by the pool and leave some leg foundation behind? Tarte promises no transferring onto clothes. (The directions just say you wait a few minutes before getting dressed.) You also get a reusable application mitt for streak-free application.

There are eight inclusive shades available: Fair, Light, Medium, Medium-Tan, Tan, Tan-Deep, Rich and Deep. It seems Medium-Tan and Rich are popular hues because they’re both waitlisted already.

The body makeup formula contains Passiflora (maracuja oil), edulis seed oil, glycerin, and vitamin E for soft-feeling skin. To remove it, you just wash with soap and water.

Tarte Shape Tape Waterproof Body Makeup is launching on QVC first, which works out well for all of us because the company is including the mitt for free. We have concealer for our face so why not our body, too?
