4 Questions to Ask When Buying Pearl Jewelry

pearl jewelry

For many years, we witness a great phenomenon – the growing popularity of pearls. Years ago, pearl jewelry became one of the biggest jewelry trends.

Contemporary powerful women, including Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, and others, all wear pearl jewelry due to its classic elegant and refined look.

Of course, we should bear in mind that pearls today are very different from what we used to see in the 80s or 90s of the last century.

Pearl necklace features a new generation of pearls: freshwater Chinese Kasumi pearls. Designed and created by Jewelry Olga.

In those days, we were mainly wearing small white round pearls. Today, such jewelry is dubbed old fashioned. At present, we see a new generation of pearls. Large pearls of different colors, shapes, and even textures.

Do You Have Peal Jewelry?

I am sure that the majority of women in our generation own pearls. And when we buy something new, it’s either for a wedding/graduation gift or because we want to update our look by wearing contemporary and even edgy pearl jewelry. We also buy pearls when traveling.

At our age, we are mature, educated, and experienced women. Thus, we want to know what we are getting for our money. Consequently, many of us prefer quality over quantity. And when we invest money in jewelry, including pearl jewelry, we want to get both value and beauty.

If you buy a piece of pearl jewelry for yourself, for your daughter or granddaughter, you want it to be worn with pleasure and to be transferred as an heirloom.

Moreover, even if you buy pearls at a well-known jeweler, it is still fun to discuss the excellence and flaws of a piece of pearl jewelry and, eventually, choose the most beautiful one at a good price.

That is why it is logical to know how to buy pearl jewelry.

Which pearls have value? Are they going to last long? How should you choose pearls? What criteria should you be looking for? These are some of the questions that matter.

When you know what a pearl is, it becomes easy to remember what to look for regarding quality and peculiarities.

How Pearls Grow

Pearls are the only gems growing in a living organism, a type of mollusk. We call this mollusk an oyster, if it grows in saltwater, or a mussel, when it grows in freshwater.

This mollusk, as it lives in the water, may be invaded by a foreign body – a parasite, a virus, or a microorganism. Protecting itself, the mollusk tries to get rid of the intruder by secreting a crystalline substance called nacre. Nacre’s quality, its luster, determines the beauty of pearls.

Layer after layer, this nacre is deposited around the intruder. Voila! a pearl is born.

Question #1: Genuine or Imitation Pearls?

Majorica pearls are imitation pearls.
Genuine pearl necklace designed and created by Jewelry Olga.

As pearls have always been rare and expensive, imitation pearls were invented centuries ago. So, first, you need to make sure that the pearls you are looking at are genuine, not imitations.

Question #2: Natural or Cultured Pearls?

Natural, antique pearl necklace.

Natural pearls are produced by the mollusks inhabiting a wild habitat. Today, natural pearls are very rare and expensive because of overharvesting and pollution.

Nowadays, the pearl market consists mostly of cultured pearls. Using sophisticated techniques, pearl farmers grow pearls in the mollusks. Cultured pearls are genuine just like natural pearls. However, the process of nacre formation is triggered artificially.

Question #3: Saltwater Pearls or Freshwater Pearls?

Cultured saltwater pearls – Akoya pearls.

Regardless of the process of pearl creation (natural or cultured), you may be looking at either saltwater or freshwater pearls. Saltwater pearls are produced in oysters in the sea while freshwater pearls grow in the mussels in rivers or ponds.

Usually, an oyster produces only one pearl, while a mussel can grow up to 30 pearls. In general, the technique of growing saltwater pearls is more complicated and costly. Thus, saltwater pearls are much more expensive than freshwater pearls.

Question #4: What Type of Saltwater Pearls Are These?

Depending on various factors, such as place of growth, saltwater pearls may be classified as Akoya pearls, Tahitian pearls, and South Sea pearls. Among these, the South Sea pearls are considered to be the most valuable.

How to Choose Nice Pearls

Today, pearls may look like these examples created by Jewelry Olga:

Once we know what pearls we are looking for, we need to be aware of which characteristics classify a pearl as good quality. To start with, we need to know that pearl nacre thickness and quality determine how long the pearl will last.

Luster is a crucial characteristic as well. Pearl luster is the sharpness and intensity of the images reflected from the pearl’s surface. It determines the quality and value of pearls.

Color is another factor affecting pearl value.

Of course, we should not forget about pearl shape, size, surface cleanness. And for each pearl type, these characteristics will be different.

As you can see, there are many factors that you should take into account. If you are looking for specific information, please leave a comment below.

Should You Go to a Reputable Jeweler to Buy Pearls?

Bearing in mind the variety and complexity of pearl characteristics, you will do well to go to a reputable jeweler who is an expert in pearls.

They will be able to provide comprehensive information and updates regarding the novelties in the pearl market. They will probably offer you a great choice of pearls and competitive prices.

Are Nice Pearls Very Expensive?

Don’t forget that it is possible to find nice pearl jewelry at different budget points. For instance, at present, freshwater pearls may have a great quality costing a fraction of the price you would pay for saltwater pearls of a similar look.

Updating Old Pearl Jewelry

If you have a “grandmother’s pearl necklace” that you don’t wear because it is outdated, it is possible to modernize it, getting stylish “classic pearl jewelry with a modern twist.” On the one hand, you will keep your family heirloom; on the other, you will enjoy wearing contemporary pearl jewelry. So, my next article will discuss ways to update your “grandmother’s pearls.”

Do your wear pearls? Do you wear your “grandmother’s pearls”? Is there a story connected to your pearl jewelry? Would you buy pearl jewelry as a gift to your daughter or granddaughter? Do you still think that pearls are the epitome of elegance and class? Do you like bold contemporary pearl designs? Or, do you prefer to see pearls in classic timeless styles?

Have You Tried Youthful Thinking? It Works!

youthful thinking

Not long ago, a lovely friend of mine referred to herself as an “old woman.” She had inserted another adjective, but it is irrelevant for this discussion. I did not respond to her self-description, but I thought to myself, “You are a talented, creative woman with many gifts. How sad that you are referring to yourself in a limited way.”

My friend is only in her later 60s. I am a few years younger than her, but not by much. I have and will continue to call myself “a woman of a certain age” or “a mature woman.” Even calling myself or others “an older woman or adult” sounds less inflammatory. You might wonder if I am in denial. My response is no.

A Privilege to Age

On the contrary, I am proud to be 63 and to have had the grace to be living as long as I have on this earth. I still see the windshield wide open, even if the road is short in front of me. Why, you might ask. Why not, is my answer.

What is the point of trying to avoid the inevitable? Welcome it, be grateful, and keep going as if you have many years ahead of you or this is the last day of your life. Most significantly, do not focus too much on the future. Live in the moment with verve and flexibility.

Some people might think, “Easy for you to say.” My response would be, “Not really.” Although blessings have sprinkled my life, I have endured some of the unfairness and significant obstacles, but to me, there is no choice.

When we feel we cannot get up, we must, even if it feels like an impossible task. By tapping into our resilience, we might have to drag our way to a standing, wobbly position. Next, brush yourself off and get back on the uneven ground we call life.

Benefits to Thinking Young?

Does such thinking have benefits as we age? Intuitively, I believed so, but now my thought has research to validate this perspective. According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, feeling more youthful may help adults handle stress as they get older. Researchers analyzed three years of data from 5,039 participants, age 40 and older, who participated in the German Ageing Survey.

Researchers often examine age through three lenses. One is the chronological age which is the age we refer to ourselves based on our birthday. The second is the biological age, determined by the condition of our body. Finally, there is the subjective age, the one we believe we feel.

The study revealed the significance of viewing oneself as younger. This perspective seemed to be a protective buffer. One important finding was that those who saw themselves as more youthful than their chronological age had a weaker link between stress and health decline.

The lead author, Markus Wettstein, indicated that many people enter old age with sound and intact health resources, whereas others experience a pronounced decline in functional health. In conclusion, he surmised that those who had a younger subjective age appeared to have a more robust defense against the impact stress often wreaks on biological aging.

What’s Next?

Many are calling for a more positive view of aging. I could not agree more. As someone whose mother viewed herself as younger, I will follow suit. I had the appreciation of watching her maintain independence, working with pleasure until age 81, keeping her home, driving her car, and attending to her finances.

When cancer came calling for her a second time, refusing to surrender, my mother whispered to me the following: “I know I am old, but I am a young 82-year-old.” Sadly, cancer won the battle, but she died knowing she did the best she could with her youthful outlook.

I carry my mother’s perspective. My friend can refer to herself as an “old woman.” That is her right. For me, I will honorably continue to describe myself as a woman of a certain age.

“Words are indeed like fine surgery,” borrowing from someone who said that to me long ago. How you think and how you say it does make a difference. Not only does it come across more optimistically, but you can feel the positive effects begin to surge.

How about you? What are your thoughts about thinking as if 60 was the new 40? A myth, perhaps, but why not give it a try and watch what happens?

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 11 Episode 9 Fashion

Although I’m totally laughing on the inside about a Porter Stracke / Amelia Hamlin “playdate” and mom Sutton Stracke’s reaction to the propsal, I’m crying on the inside because Sutton’s green and white tie dye sweater is sold out. And though I only have sons if I did have a daughter I wouldn’t want them anywhere in the vicinity of Scott Disick, I would totally let her near these cute Style Stealers for Sutton’s sweater.

Alyssa Edwards Spills the Tea About Post-Pandemic Life & Her Holy Grail Beauty Products

The past year had many of us stuck at home as we worked together to stop the spread of COVID-19, which undoubtedly changed the everyday realities of most of our lives — including our favorite drag queens like Alyssa Edwards. Raised in Mesquite, TX, Edwards gained popularity from her appearance on Season 5 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” With her signature tongue pops, back rolls, and larger-than-life personality, this dancing diva has racked up over 1.8M followers on Instagram since her time on the show.

Like many drag queens, Edwards turned to virtual drag shows to keep entertained during such a difficult time. While it was a great opportunity for her to stay connected with fans, Edwards says there is simply no feeling like being back on the stage. Most recently, she performed her limited-time one-woman show, Alyssa, Memoirs of a Queen, at London’s West End from June 7 to June 13. “I can say it has absolutely been sensational and a dream come true. Being back on stage again, moving again, seeing people live in person again,” Edwards told STYLECASTER. “The amount of energy that has been in this theater each and every night has been overwhelming.”

This was one of Edward’s first times back on stage since March 2020 and the show has received nothing, but positive reviews from fans and critics alike. “All the reviews were very positive,” Edwards said. “Something I teach my dance kiddos at Beyond Belief is ‘winning isn’t everything, but wanting to is’ so don’t ever let a judge validate your art.”

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

This advice came in handy for her dance students at Beyond Belief Dance Company when a select few had the chance to perform on America’s Got Talent” last month. The group performed a dance routine to Todrick Hall’s “Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels” where they received a standing ovation from all four judges.

Similar to how Edwards’ dance students had to prepare to perform on national television, she also has a special process to get her in the zone before a show.  “It starts with a mental get ready. Before I can be Alyssa Edwards, I have to sit in the mirror, get into my character, gather my thoughts, say a few prayers,” she said. “You got to feel the fantasy. I have to feel and embody this character before I can be it. I really really really have to get into it.”

This is the same mentality Edwards is trying to cultivate now that the world is slowly starting to get back to “normal.” As of late last month, the drop-dead gorgeous queen has partnered with Degree as the face of their Move Again With Degree campaign to help people get reacquainted back into society. The campaign fits perfectly with Edwards’ lifestyle as she is active and can always use a bit of extra protection from sweat whether it’s out on the runway or teaching a dance class back home in Texas.

“The hashtag speaks for itself. #MoveAgainWithDegree it’s perfect for me being a dance teacher and stage performer. I’d love to be an inspiration to everyone,” Edwards says. “After this last year, we’ve gotta get up, get glammed, get glamorous, we got to feel our best to be our best. Put your deodorant on and get out and start moving again.” Oh, and in case you’re curious, her favs are Degree’s Dry Spray Shower Clean and Degree Men’s Advanced Protection.)

While every month is one to celebrate the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ community, last month’s Pride festivities were the perfect excuse to celebrate with her friends and family. Side note: Edwards even takes her BBDC dancers on the floats with her — how sweet!

Similar to many L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ youths, Edwards also grew up insecure and uncomfortable in his own skin and identity, she’s finally at a place where she’s confident in her own skin. “There’s something so magical about accepting you, and all of you, and not just accepting, but celebrating,” Edwards said. “If I could tell little Justin something, I’d say, stay tuned because it’s going to get really good.”

Now, given that we’ve learned most of our beauty tips from drag queens, we obviously couldn’t let Alyssa go without getting the lowdown on some of her beauty must-haves. First and foremost, Edwards loves Anastasia Beverly Hills — and I mean, who doesn’t. “I’m a fan of everything Anastasia Beverly Hills,” Edwards said. “The Dip Brow to me is next to none. It’s unmatched.”  Aside from the Dip Brow, Edwards can’t get enough of her palette collaboration with ABH, of course. With shades named after her dance company and iconic phrases, the eyeshadows bring Edwards’s character to life. (FYI: She told us that ‘Unicorn Tribe’ is her favorite!)
