Kathy Hilton’s Black Pearl Embellished Dress

Kathy Hilton’s Black Pearl Embellished Dress at Kyle’s Party

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 11 Episode 13 Fashion

Kathy Hilton looks classy af in her black pearl embellished dress at Kyle’s party. Though it’s always great to see what she’s wearing, I honestly live to hear what she’s saying. She has seriously made this season with her crazy lines. I mean what is “having a gorilla”? Who knows lol. What I do know is that when it comes to her style it’s just as unique as her dialogue. And even though this dress is sold out, there are Style Stealers below that are just as honky dory.

Sincerely Stylish,

Jess

Think You’re Getting Enough Protein? You May Want to Think Again!

getting enough protein

There are some nutrients that we all tend to worry about not getting enough of as we age. I would put calcium in this group. We are usually so concerned about not including enough calcium in our diet that we take any number of supplements (and often unnecessarily) just “to be on the safe side.”

But there is a nutrient – protein – which we probably don’t even give a second thought since we take it for granted that we get enough of it. But by taking protein for granted, we may unknowingly be putting our health at risk. This is because aging tends to make it harder for us to absorb and effectively use the protein we consume at a time in our lives when we may need more of it to protect our health.

As we age, many of us may have decreased appetite, loss of taste and dental problems that may impact our protein intake. It’s almost as if our bodies are conspiring against us when it comes to protein! In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging suggested that almost 46 percent of adults over the age of 51 don’t get enough protein.

Protein 101

Protein is necessary to help build muscle mass. It is also important to keep our immune systems healthy, give us energy, maintain the correct balance of hormones in our bodies and repair cells. There are over 10,000 different types of proteins in our bodies. Our bodies break these proteins down into their constituent building blocks (amino acids), which are then used to keep us healthy.

Women Need More Protein as We Age

While it may seem almost counterintuitive to some people, boomer women need more protein now than we did in our younger years. One reason is for the health benefits it offers. The other is because our mature bodies simply are not as good at using the protein we eat as they were when we were 40 years old – so we may need to compensate by taking more.

Let’s look at why we need to make sure we are getting enough protein:

Fall Prevention

We need adequate amounts of protein to maintain muscle mass and strength, both of which are important for helping prevent falls while keeping us mobile and agile.

Sarcopenia

As we get older, we run the risk of developing a condition known as sarcopenia, which is a loss in muscle mass and strength. One of the biggest drivers of sarcopenia is menopause-related hormonal changes. Adequate protein can help counter these issues by keeping our muscles healthy.

Sedentary Lifestyle

As a group, we tend to be more sedentary than we were when we were younger, and this also contributes to loss of muscle mass. Many people first notice this loss in their legs.

Lower Nutritional Reserves

When we were younger, we had what could be called “nutritional reserves” that our bodies could tap into when needed, but these reserves are lower in boomer women.

Daily Tasks

Some suggest that boomers who get enough protein are more likely do better maintaining their ability to do daily tasks such as dressing themselves, using the stairs and walking.

Liver Issues

Getting enough protein may also help reduce our risk of developing a fatty liver.

Stroke

There is a link between getting enough protein and possibly reducing the risk for stroke. (In one study from China, people who had the most protein in their diets were 20 percent less likely to have had a stroke during the study.)

How to Be Proactive with Protein

Most people believe that if they are getting the recommended daily amount of protein (better known as the RDA), or of any other nutrient for that matter, they are fine from a nutritional perspective. However, the RDA is the minimum amount of a nutrient that you need to stay healthy. I like to look at it as a starting point rather than as an absolute number.

In the case of protein, the RDA for adults over 19 years old is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. This means that, according to the RDA, a 140-pound woman needs around 51 grams of protein a day. To put this in perspective, a salad with a cup of shredded chicken breast and a hard-boiled egg clocks in at around 49 grams of protein. So, it’s fairly easy for most of us to get the RDA for protein throughout the day.

Credible research suggests that boomer women should be targeting at least 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Using the same 140-pound woman as an example, a target of 1.2 grams per kilogram as a minimum means she should be consuming 76 grams of protein. This is an increase of almost 50 percent!

Note: Before upping your protein intake, please be sure to consult with a competent healthcare practitioner since it may not be indicated for people with kidney disease.

What About Protein Supplements?

I am a big supporter of the belief that we should get as many of the nutrients our bodies need from food (preferably primarily plant based and cooked at home since we can then control exactly what and how much we are eating). Nutrients in our food are more readily used by our bodies and they also have many other benefits such as fiber and antioxidants.

While many of us should be able to get the protein we need from our diets, it gets more challenging as we age to absorb nutrients from food. So, if after adding more protein-rich foods to your menu, you still are not getting enough protein, your doctor may suggest taking a protein supplement.

If your doctor says a protein supplement (such as a protein powder) would be a good addition to your nutritional tool kit, make sure you are getting one that meets your needs and that it does not have ingredients that could undermine your efforts at good nutrition. These include contaminants, sugars, and artificial colors.

Also be sure you are not allergic to any ingredients, such as soy, whey, egg, rice, peas, or hemp, all of which are used in the manufacture of protein powders.

Last, but not least, having a comprehensive nutrient test on a regular basis can help make sure you are on track with your protein and other nutrients.

Have you ever spoken with your doctor about how much protein you should be getting a day? Have you ever been told you may not be getting enough protein in your diet? If so, what do you do about it? Do you regularly eat foods that are good sources of protein? Do you currently take protein supplements? Please join the conversation.

What I Swear by to…

Cover Up Dark Under Eye Circles:

1. Charlotte Tilbury Genius Magic Loose Powder (used by Kristin Cavallari) 2. Hourglass Concealer

After I apply my foundation (below) I put Hourglass concealer under my eyes with the foundation brush (linked below) and on my lids as a shadow primer. Then I dip a finger or a smaller brush in the loose powder and dab it on top of the concealer under my lids. It totally blurs imperfection. Occasionally I use it to set my makeup on my face in a very tiny amount. Then I highlight with Ambient Lighting powder.

Get A Glam Glow:

3. Lancer Dani Glowing Skin Perfector 4. Supergoop! Glow Screen

I used Lancer Dani Skin Perfector (a fave of Tracy Tutor’s) as a highlighter on my cheeks, forhead and nose bridge after I’ve done all my makeup. I even rub in on my legs! I used Supergoop in the daytime when I’m running errands or going to the pool since it’s also tinted and has an SPF. It’s been great for the Austin summer where foundation is too heavy!

Line + Plump Lips:

5. Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk Liner 6. Hourglass Unreal Shine Volumizing Gloss

I love using Pillowtalk Liner (the shade is a celeb fave) with about every pink shade of lip gloss I use (I also use the CT Pillowtalk Lipstick + Gloss). I use Hourglass gloss with or without liner.

Strong Foundation:

7. Hourglass Vanish Seamless Foundation Stick 8. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder 9. Hourglass Vanish Seamless Foundation Brush

I like a full coverage foundation for a night out and the Hourglass Foundation Stick is buildable depending on how much coverage you want. I highly recommend using their foundation brush to apply it.  I use the ambient lighting powder as a light dusting over all of my face if I want to be really glow-y, or a put it on thicker on my cheekbones etc. if I want to use it as an actual highligter.

For Long Lashes:

10. Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara (Used by Cameran Eubanks) 11. Dior Show Maximizer 3D Lash Primer

I love a long lash so always use a primer before my mascara. I love layering these two items for a long lash. I also use Hourglass to blend my normal lashes with my fake lashes at the base when I’m going out!

How to Convince Your Spouse to Downsize

convincing spouse downsizing

If you knew Gayle and Marc, you would think that it was entirely Marc’s idea for them to move into a cottage home. For years, Marc led a fairly frugal life. He carried the same briefcase to work. He had the same lunch with leftovers from the previous night. He changed the oil in all the family cars.

It wasn’t that they couldn’t afford to splurge some. They could. Marc just didn’t see a need to. But when he was able to retire, things changed.

A few months post retirement, Marc purchased a third car. He also started wood carving and buying all the tools he saw in woodworking magazines, including chisels, a lathe, and a paint kit.

Meanwhile, Gayle was purging, methodically donating, or throwing away many things she felt she had held onto “just because.” For 36 years, Gayle had thought about Marc’s retirement and when they could leave their 4-bed/3-bath Colonial behind and really start to live a little.

Instead of growing closer together, it felt like they were growing apart, and it seemed like the wedge was either made of plastic or had a sharp end on it.

A Different Kind of Compromise

I remember talking to Gayle one day about marriage and how it ages. Being in the early stages of my own, I often thought she and Marc had mastered the art of compromise.

I’ll never forget what she told me that afternoon. “Spouses can be stubborn about many things,” she started. “In marriage, it is almost impossible for two people to see eye-to-eye on everything. One of you wants to get a pool for the backyard and the other just wants to head to the lake on hot days. All of that is just the details though.”

She continued, “Typically, it is one person gently leading the other. Sometimes though, one of you just has to brace yourself against the wall and push back as hard as you can.”

Gayle told me that after Marc’s retirement she had a firm vision for where the marriage could go. She didn’t want the house or the cars or the things that took her and Marc’s money each month. She wanted Marc. She wanted adventure. And she wanted to be a bit more carefree again, like they were more than 35 years ago. Gayle wanted less. (And more, as she put it.) And she was prepared to push back to get it.

Downsizing

Downsizing to a smaller home really comes down to three main points. It means less upkeep, lower bills and more time to do the things you love. It is an exercise in saving both money and time. That is all Gayle wanted.

A plus for Marc and Gayle was that they were downsizing later in life. For them, this meant they had lived together long enough to know exactly what the other would like. They could choose a property and a home that would perfectly suit their needs rather than the needs of everyone around them.

When it comes to downsizing, de-cluttering, and relocating, it can be both discouraging and frustrating. But that is where compromise comes in and above all, communication. Gayle was ready to refocus her and her husband’s life, and she knew it would take compromise between them to do it.

As we talked more that afternoon, I picked up on some strategies that had helped her merge their two mindsets and ultimately helped her to convince her spouse to downsize. If you are in a relationship with someone who isn’t all that enthused about downsizing, try some of these ideas:

Communicate

Like you would any other subject, talk through the scenario. Talk about all the costs and benefits of downsizing together, and make your personal intentions known so your partner doesn’t assume anything. It is no surprise that communication is key to any successful relationship. Try making a pro/con list together with an emphasis on the “what” questions, such as:

  • What is intimidating about this idea? What is exciting about it?
  • What items are you most fretful about parting with?
  • What is daunting about making a big change?
  • What risks and benefits are involved in living out an adventure or a new experience?

Take Your Spouse for a Virtual Tour Around the Tiny House and Small Cottage Home World

The internet allows us to take virtual tours and truly peer into the lives of other right-sized housing people. We can see the triumphs and the pitfalls of downsizing. We can gain decoration inspiration and even hear some of the philosophies of others who have chosen to downsize their lifestyle.

Show Them the Money!

Who can resist a good savings? A great conversation to have is how downsizing can reduce your monthly overhead and allow you to save money that can be used to do so many other things. Crunch the numbers as a couple and show your spouse how much money can be saved by living in a smaller home with less to maintain.

Talk about the financial benefits of downsizing your abode and what you can do with the money you save. Freedom and flexibility will likely show themselves as obvious rewards.

Lead by Example

It is a hard sell the idea of downsizing and encourage your spouse to give up some things when your stuff looks like Mount Vesuvius just erupted. Take some time to de-clutter and downsize your own things and let your example speak more loudly than your words.

Your space will start to feel better to you, and you’ll begin to see the incredible value in the special things you decide to keep. This may just be the inspiration your spouse needs.

Start Small

You don’t have to do everything overnight. You don’t have to de-clutter or relocate tomorrow. Set manageable goals. Start small and encourage your spouse to start with a bookshelf or a sock drawer and then move on from there. As you both de-clutter you’ll start to see how little you actually need to be happy.

Have you and your spouse recently decided to downsize? Was it a difficult process? What tactics did you employ to help navigate the conversations? Share some of your tips with the rest of us. Let us hear from you!
