The Hottest Wig Trends of 2022 Include Wispy Bangs & ’90s Layers

It’s officially one of our favorite times of the year — forecasting the wig trends that we’re looking forward to seeing on our feeds in 2022 (and rocking in real life, of course). After spending more than a year at home, wig wearers longing to pull their units out of hiding came back with a vengeance after getting accustomed to the “new normal.” We’ve seen folks feeling much more comfortable playing with cuts and color, for starters. According to hair expert and CEO of handmade wig company Hair Queen LA, Amiel “Moyo” Fomko, we have the pleasure of looking forward to even more of that playful spirit in 2022.

Of course, we have some of our favorite celebrities to thank for moving the needle on some of the trends that will surge in the new year. If you’re looking for inspo for your hair mood board, Moyo notes we should look to the likes of Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, as they’re major wig trendsetters that aren’t afraid to step out of their comfort zone all while pushing us to do the same.

We caught up with Moyo to spotlight some wig trends that should be on your radar for 2022 and, of course, some units that can help you achieve the look. Needless to say, we’re wigging out over all the trends.

Our mission at STYLECASTER is to bring style to the people, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. HSN is a STYLECASTER sponsor, however, all products in this article were independently selected by our editors. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

Creative Fringe

If you’re looking for wig options that don’t require glue (or knowing how to lay a wig, for that matter), bangs are the look you should be going for in the new year. The best part of bangs being on-trend (besides the ease of rocking bang wigs) is that you can go for straight, wavy or curly bangs. Opt for whichever look your heart desires! Here are some of our favorites.

Rapunzel Vibes

If dramatically long hair reminiscent of Rupenzel is your idea of a good hair day, we’re excited to share with you that longer locks are on-trend for the coming year. With a 40-inch length, you may want to consider investing in a high-quality long wig that has minimal shedding and tangling and can last you for years to come.

Major Mullets

We know what you’re thinking — a mullet?! Yes, but hear us out. The mullet has had many modern adaptations since its peak in the ’80s. If you’re looking to make a statement with your hair in 2022, having a mullet-style wig in your arsenal is in your best interest. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a dramatically long mullet like Cardi B’s look for the 2021 AMAs done by Tokyo Stylez, or something shorter and subtle, which is a fave of Miley Cyrus.

’90s Layers

Layering is one of those hair-cutting techniques that had a great run in 2021 with the resurgence of late ’90s and Y2K beauty trends, and we can look forward to seeing even more of it in 2022. The volume and body that layers add to a wig are unmatched, and the more, the merrier.

Asymmetrical Bobs

As you may have already noticed, a few of the wig trends we’re seeing in 2022 are twists on trends that we already know and love — and bobs are no different. In the new year, look forward to taking your beloved bob haircuts to the next level by adding a sassy asymmetrical twist. It’s not a regular bob, it’s a fun bob.

Contrasting Roots

Playing with bold color has been a longstanding trend of wig wearers over the years. After all, wigs give you the ability to rock any hair color without compromising the health of your natural strands. One specific color trend Moyo is forecasting for 2022 is colored roots. You can go bold with brights (a la Billie Eilish) or more natural with blonde, brown and black roots.

Reverse Ombré

Ombré is one of those color techniques that will probably never go out of style. In 2021, the color that gradually goes from dark to light from roots to ends, had a pretty strong presence in the world of wigs. In 2022, Moyo says we can expect to see a twist on the color technique — a reverse ombré.

As the name suggests, this color technique is the exact opposite of a traditional ombré and instead gradually fades from light at the roots to a darker hue on the ends of the hair. This style can be done with a blonde to black transition but can also be achieved with bold colors like this grey to purple reverse ombré done by stylist Lorenzo Devante.

Orange

After seeing a huge emphasis on ginger and red-colored wigs in 2021, it was only a matter of time that we slowly started to progress toward orange. Although some may not be opting to rock bright orange hair in the dead of the winter, we should see quite a few wig enthusiasts playing with orange styles by the spring.

Learning to Put Yourself First After Silver Divorce

silver divorce people-pleasing

Are you over 50, divorced and – despite all your professional success and beautiful home you’ve created for yourself – afraid to step on anybody’s toes?

Are you the kind of woman who, despite wanting to take Friday afternoon for yourself to run errands and get ready for the week ahead, regretfully says “yes” when your grown daughter asks you to watch your grandson at the last minute?

Or how about when you’re enjoying your vacation, a margarita in your hand as you sun yourself by the hotel pool, and a text comes in from that one friend who complains all the time but never bothers to ask how you’re doing. Even though you’ve been friends for decades.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. Many divorced women over 50 struggle with people-pleasing.

In my work as a divorce recovery coach for women over 50, the most common struggle women deal with is the need to people-please, even at the expense of their own health and happiness.

But that ends today. In these 3 steps, you can learn to let go of people-pleasing with 100% confidence and 0% guilt.

Step 1: Understand the Source of Your People-Pleasing

None of us were born people-pleasers.

But as we started to grow up, we most likely learned that keeping our room clean, not getting into fights with our siblings, making sure we didn’t tear or stain our clothes, and getting straight A’s would get positive attention from our parents. So even at a young age, we started to associate making other people happy with being recognized and praised.

As part of your marriage, you probably attached a lot of your self-esteem onto how healthy your marriage was, and what your husband thought of you.

It’s no surprise that even after the divorce, you were a people-pleaser, turning your attention to not wanting to let anybody at work down or your family down or your family group down.

But it’s not your fault. Women are conditioned at an early age to not rock the boat, to be the perfect daughter, the perfect sister and friend and wife and co-worker and mother and aunt, so much that we aren’t even aware of the fact that we can say no and not feel guilty.

Your need to people-please was a survival mechanism that helped you navigate your life until this point. But it’s no longer serving you. It’s time to let go.

Step 2: Recognize the Danger of People-Pleasing

Like most women over 50, you may be kicking yourself, using negative self-talk such as “Agggggh why do I do this?”

You get mad.

You know you need to stop.

But then you take no serious action to change the behavior.

So what happens is you acknowledge that people-pleasing helped you up until this point, but you then stay stuck, unable to move on after your divorce.

That’s a dangerous position to put yourself in after 50. Because the more you sacrifice your own happiness, your own convenience, and your own boundaries, the more you tell yourself:

  • That your needs aren’t a priority.
  • That you don’t deserve to be happy.

You would *never* tell somebody you cared about those terrible things. But every time you people-please, that is exactly what you’re telling yourself.

It’s no wonder that you feel stuck right now. It’s not a surprise that you still feel frustrated and lonely and unable to move on after divorce. It’s because you’ve let people run all over you without taking into consideration what you need.

And if you continue down this path, the following will happen:

  • You won’t build the self-esteem and internal value you absolutely need and deserve.
  • You’ll continue to let people intrude on your boundaries and put their needs above your own.
  • You’ll remain stuck, missing out on the incredible post-divorce life of your dreams that you deserve.

I don’t want that for you. You deserve better.

Step 3: Start Putting Yourself First. Even If You’re Divorced. Even If You’re Over 50

It’s time for you to:

Say “No” to Things That No Longer Give You Joy, Even If…

  • You’ve said yes before
  • You’re afraid people will be “mad” at you if you do
  • You feel guilty for doing so.

Remember – it no longer matters if somebody doesn’t like you saying no. And every time you say no, remember that you are deriving a whisper of internal value and worth, because you put yourself first.

Those whispers will one day become the roar that you use to resonate your own self-love, boundaries, and worth – things that nobody can take away from you because you built them internally and didn’t rely on others to give to you.

Say “Yes” to Things That…

  • Fill your cup and make you feel energized
  • Let you see your internal value and worth, instead of causing you to question it
  • Make you feel confident, beautiful, and powerful.

I get that it can be easier said than done, especially if you grew up with the mindset that you should be happy just with what you have. But that messaging was created to make you doubt yourself and pull you into the people-pleasing mindset that takes and takes but never gives back.

It’s time for you to kick that old messaging to the curb.

Now is the time for you to let go of people-pleasing. It no longer serves you and is keeping you stuck.

The time to put yourself first after divorce is now.

Here is your golden opportunity to cast aside those old mindsets.

You are a new woman with boundaries and strength.

It’s your turn.

Do you struggle with people-pleasing, even in your 50s and beyond? What one small step will you take today to let go of this self-destructing behavior?

12 Self-Care Rituals for the Holidays

12 Self-Care Rituals for the Holidays

The holidays tend to be an incredibly busy time. Many people seem to be moving at an accelerated pace with an increased sense of urgency, and this time of year can be demanding and stressful as people run around checking off items on their to-do list.

When you get caught up in the frenzy, it’s easy to lose sight of the real meaning of the holiday season. Focus on the simple things – make time for others, do good deeds, express love and promote peace.

If you discover that your joy and peace are slipping away, slow down and slip into self-care mode. Your health depends on it. Finding joy and peace in the midst of the frantic rush does not have to be challenging.

Let me share my 12 ways to pamper yourself and boost your mood this season.

Watch a Funny Movie or a Holiday Classic

Humor can lift your mood in a snap. And a heartwarming seasonal video can positively influence your day. Noelle and Elf are two delightful movies to add to your list. Sit back, relax and enjoy the therapeutic pleasures of laughter.

Listen to Soft Music by the Fireplace

Nothing beats sitting in a comfy chair with a hot cup of herbal tea and deliciously soothing tunes playing in the background. Ahh! Include music on your list of restorative practices. For starters, check out harpist Georgia Kelly’s Garden of the Sun album.

Invite a Friend to Lunch

During these challenging times, connecting with those we hold near and dear is essential to our overall wellbeing. Catching up over coffee or a lovely meal will supply you with heaping portions of goodness. Consider scheduling your we-time often.

Treat Yourself to a Personal Service

What type of personal indulgence do you enjoy? Manicure? Facial? Massage? One of my favorite stress-busters is Swedish massage, and I’m way overdue for my one-hour, full-body treatment. Of course, making an appointment for any personal service of your choice will make you feel wonderful and brighten your day.

Savor a Book on Your Reading List

Sometimes we get so busy with our to-do list that we forget the simple pleasures of immersing ourselves in a great book. Many people prefer the convenience of e-books, but since my business requires a lot of screen time, I like to give my eyes a break from electronics.

And there’s nothing like holding a book in hand, savoring the text and making notations in the margins. Plus, I like to see the physical copy on my coffee table with my beautiful bookmark, as I anticipate the next chapter.

Close Your Eyes and Follow a Guided Meditation

Quiet me-time is a daily practice that benefits the body, mind and spirit. Add your favorite conscious deep-breathing technique, and you now have a simple, healthy habit that can be practiced anywhere, anytime. Try diaphragmatic breathing. It’s one of the most practical methods to support your body’s organs and immune system.

Enjoy a Live Concert

As venues begin to reopen, consider treating yourself and a bestie to a show. My cousin invited me to see the live Johnny Mathis Christmas Show this weekend. It will be my first performance since the pandemic started, and I am looking forward to celebrating this magical season with her. Treating yourself to a live event can feel exhilarating.

Take a Warm Herbal Bath by Candlelight

Taking a long, luxurious soak in your bathtub is the ultimate relaxation ritual that will have you floating peacefully into the evening. Bathing is not only great for the immune system, it soothes your soul. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to your diffuser, pour in a half-cup of Epsom salt to your warm tub of water, dim the lights, and light a candle. Sounds marvelous, doesn’t it?

Spend Time in Nature

I always say nature is my spiritual supplement. I savor my time in the great outdoors because there’s nothing like it anywhere else. Each season offers a delightful landscape in which to engage. Natural settings can ease your burden, provide renewed energy and reward you with fresh perspectives.

Take a Yoga Class

The health benefits of exercise have been well documented. Experts say that a regular fitness protocol can help lower risks of disease, improve circulation, elevate mood, reduce stress, improve strength, support brain health, and more. Yoga is particularly appealing because it bolsters mindfulness and promotes relaxation.

Listen to Motivational Audios

Inspirational audios are plentiful online. Powerful lessons of hope and triumph can be uplifting and encourage you to take action. What type of message do you require today? Your thought-provoking selections are just a click away. Begin by typing “inspirational audios” and “motivational audios” in your search bar.

Bake or Donate to a Cause

Small acts of kindness not only benefit the receiver but also the giver. You know the saying, “The more you do for others, the more you do for yourself?” That’s because expressions of gratitude and thanksgiving are examples of self-care.

Create joy during this festive season. Consider making yummy treats for your local fire and police departments, letting them know you appreciate their service. Maybe you’d like to give a gift to a local charity or donate to an organization’s holiday wish list.

Take time to pamper yourself! Jean Shinoda Bolen said, “When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” While the holiday season can seem overwhelming, we must not lose sight of the reason for the season. You will be more available to share your love and light when you practice self-care.

What self-care rituals do you practice during the holidays? How do they help your mood?
