How to Plan Your Elderly Care if You Don’t Have Children or a Spouse

How-to-Plan-Your-Elderly-Care-if-Your-Don't-Have-Children-or-a-Spouse

One question that many people ask themselves as they get a little older is, “Who will care for me when I’m old?” People with children do not want to be a burden – and they didn’t have a family for the sake of being taken care of later in life. But, in a sense, children still are a good insurance policy.

Recently, in a LinkedIn group, this concern was shared, “I am not a caregiver, but I am a senior citizen and wonder who would care for me if I took critically ill?” Some of us chose not to have children, while for others it just didn’t happen. Our work or pets take their place. But, unfortunately, our jobs or cats cannot help us out in case of an emergency or if we become ill.

Do We Need a New Way of Looking at Elderly Care?

Family caregivers are the mainstay of elderly care and long-term care services in America today. Both my parents relied on me – and, their parents depended on them.

In fact, a recent study by AARP found that 11.6% of women aged 80 to 84 were childless as of 2010. At the same time, the caregiver support fraction was about seven potential caregivers for every person over the age of 80. But by 2030, that fraction will decline to four to one. By 2050, it’s expected to fall to three to one.

Simply put, the supply of adult children caregivers will not keep up with the growing demand for elderly assistance.

What Can We Do If We Don’t Have Children to Step Up?

Single people living alone have more to worry about than just growing frail. What happens if we develop a form of dementia, have knee or hip surgery, or break a limb? My sisters and I face this dilemma and so do many of our friends and family. Many of us fall into one of the following categories:

  • Never married
  • Never remarried
  • Widowed
  • Children live far away or none at all

If This Describes You, Here Are Some Suggestions

  • Adopt a (trusted) family that lives nearby and assign part of your will to them (get advice from an elder law attorney first).
  • Negotiate long-term care with your nieces and nephews.
  • Live in a joint household of trusted “extended” family members and friends and share the care.
  • Find an elder law attorney who specializes in chronic care advocacy.
  • Get a will, a living will, or other advance directive, a health care proxy, power of attorney and consider long-term care insurance.
  • Set up your social connectedness with transportation, have a purpose, get a hobby, eat healthy, make friends, attend church, join a support group, and join a senior center.
  • Get prepared and learn the long-term care costs in your area.

The Following Support Groups and Organizations May Also be Able to Help

  • Family Caregiver Alliance, caregiver.org, (800) 445-8106
  • National Family Caregivers Association, nfcacares.org, (800) 896-3650
  • Share, sharecancersupport.org, (866) 891-2392
  • CancerCare, cancercare.org, (800) 813-4673

These suggestions require due diligence and the advice of an attorney. That said, I encourage you to make preparations now for your later years and communicate your wishes to your family or support team. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get everything organized. The good news is that proper planning can help you live many more years with dignity and in relative safety.

Are you or someone you know the primary caretaker for a loved one? What has your experience been? What advice would you give to someone who is taking on a caretaker role for the first time? Please join in the discussion!

Pro Makeup Artist Recommendations: 10 Great Foundations for Women Over 50

great makeup foundations

When it comes to looking our best, wearing the right foundation that evens out our skin tone is the biggest make-or-break makeup product in our entire makeup routine. But as we all know, our foundation can create a beautiful, glowing second-skin look or a cakey, chalky looking catastrophe that looks like – well – foundation.

Finding the best foundation can be tricky because there are so many different things to consider and literally hundreds of foundations from which to choose. So it’s important to know our own personal preferences and consider our skin type.

For instance, do we have oily, dry or combination skin? A foundation that works well on very dry skin may not work as well for those of us with oily skin. Other questions to consider are: how much coverage we want? Do we want a matte look or a glowing look? What’s the undertone of our skin? And do we want our foundation to include an SPF?

Knowing the Undertone of Our Skin Is Key

If you know the undertone of your skin, the good news is that most foundations now indicate whether the undertone of the foundation is cool, warm or neutral, so definitely pick a shade that matches the undertone of your skin.

And if you’re not sure of the undertone of your skin, here’s a helpful video:

And knowing the undertone of your skin is not only important for choosing the foundation that will really make your skin come alive, but also essential in order to pick out the blush and lipstick shades that will make your skin glow.

3 Favorite Drugstore Foundations

I like to combine two of my favorite drugstore foundations to create my preferred finish which is a slight glow to the skin: the Catrice True Skin Hydrating Foundation and the L’Oréal Age Perfect Serum Foundation.

The Catrice True Skin Hydrating Foundation

This product provides medium coverage, a skin-like finish and comes in 20 shades. The focus of the brand is on creating quality products at an affordable price with a cleaner formula. In fact, since they’re headquartered in Germany, they adhere to European standards set forth by the EU Cosmetics Regulation which restricts over 1,500 ingredients from being used in beauty products. In comparison, the U.S. restricts just eleven.

Additionally, Catrice has banned an additional 60 plus ingredients that they deem unacceptable, and they are cruelty free. And what’s most amazing is that this foundation costs only $11.00! Two things to note about Catrice is that the shade range is somewhat limited, and if you have extremely dry skin, this formula may not be hydrating enough for you.

L’Oréal’s Age Perfect Serum Foundation

This foundation was specifically created for mature skin. It’s formulated with Vitamin B3 and a hydrating serum which includes hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and aloes. Some people can have a reaction to niacinamide, so if this is true for you, it’s always a good idea to check the foundation’s ingredient list to see how much niacinamide the product contains.

This foundation comes in 30 shades, has a chemical SPF of 50, is lightweight, has a medium coverage and is specifically formulated not to settle into fine lines. I have had a really good experience with this foundation, but I must say that the reviews are somewhat mixed. It seems that people either really like this foundation or really don’t. So as always, check the return policy before purchasing.

Be sure to check out Elise’s YouTube channel which specifically focuses on makeup tips, techniques, and product reviews for those of us 50+. Don’t forget to subscribe!

Colourpop’s Pretty Fresh Foundation

The third drugstore priced foundation I want to highlight is Colourpop’s Pretty Fresh Foundation. This one really surprised me, in a positive way. It comes in a whooping number of shade choices – 42! – has good medium coverage and a natural looking finish which can get somewhat dewy looking throughout the day if you have oily skin.

It’s oil-free and vegan and contains hyaluronic acid and coconut water. Products containing coconut ingredients can cause breakouts in some people, so I think that’s an important ingredient to be aware of. I’ve been really impressed with the lovely finish and coverage of this foundation.

Another Very Affordable Option

Another amazingly good foundation formula at a very reasonable price is Sephora’s Best Skin Ever Foundation which has the second highest number of shades on this list at 50. It provides light to medium buildable coverage and is a lovely gel-like formula containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin and squalane.

It’s fragrance free, but not cruelty free. What I love most about this formula is that it provides a natural, but slightly dewy look which can be beautiful on our more mature skin.

2 Clean Beauty Choices

The first two more expensive foundations I want to highlight are clean beauty choices: Merit’s The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick and the most recent foundation entry from Kosas: their Revealer Skin Improving Foundation.

Merit’s Foundation

Merit’s foundation comes in a stick formula which makes it wonderfully quick and easy to apply. There are 17 shades and in addition to being a clean beauty product, it’s also fragrance free, vegan and cruelty free.

It’s a medium coverage foundation with a natural finish. One of the things I really love about this foundation is that it’s a combination foundation and concealer so you can get more coverage if you need it, but it’s also easy to sheer out.

Kosas Foundation

The Kosas clean beauty foundation comes in 36 shades and has a mineral SPF of 25. It’s also cruelty free and hypoallergenic. The finish is definitely natural, and it has a beautiful medium coverage. In addition to containing hyaluronic acid, it also has niacinamide, peptides, squalane, Vitamin B5 and caffeine. I was especially impressed with the coverage of this foundation and how good it felt on the skin.

A Cult Favorite for Great Coverage

There are two foundations from Estee Lauder and the first is a cult classic: Estee Lauder’s Double Wear. If you’re looking for a matte finish, fuller coverage, long-wearing foundation, then this is an excellent choice. And it has the biggest shade range of any foundation on this list: 56! It also just happens to be the top selling foundation in the United States and has a chemical SPF of 10.

2 Hydrating Options

But Estee Lauder has also come out with a newer foundation that is more moisturizing and has a beautiful radiant finish: it’s their Estee Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturizing Foundation. It has a chemical SPF of 45, is lightweight and provides medium coverage. And this foundation comes in 28 shades.

IT Cosmetics also makes some very popular foundations and one that works especially well for more mature skin is their Your Skin But Better Foundation which is medium coverage and comes in 40 shades.

It’s formulated to provide hydration with ingredients that include hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and Vitamin E. And it definitely creates a radiant finish. IT Cosmetics has also been confirmed as a cruelty free brand. There is a slight fragrance with this product, and it has a physical sunscreen of 50.

My Top 2 Choices

The last two foundations are two of my favorites: Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation and Charlotte Tilbury’s recently launched Beautiful Skin Foundation.

The Giorgio Armani Foundation is truly an iconic foundation which provides a beautiful satin, soft finish focus. It’s lightweight and oil-free with medium coverage. The good news with this foundation is that in addition to the standard size which costs $65, it now comes in a mini size for $44. However, the mini sizes are often sold out. This foundation is a classically beautiful foundation which I usually save for special occasions.

The Charlotte Tilbury Foundation is cruelty free, long-wearing, and hydrating with a natural finish. What sets this foundation apart for me is that it not only helps to blur pores, but it also creates a beautiful bright quality to my skin which I love.

I hope these recommendations can help you find your perfect foundation.

What’s your current favorite foundation? What do you like best about it? What are the most important things you look for when choosing a foundation?

HoYeon Jung Got the Coolest Baby Bangs of the Season

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

Is there anything better than getting your hair cut and/or colored, leaving the salon and feeling like a supermodel? No, we don’t think there is. But because of the current climate, seeing your hairstylist might not be as easy and getting your split ends cut off or your roots done might just be a quick in-and-out appointment without all the fun. That’s one reason why we’re so obsessed with actors and influencers who switch up their look on a dime. We’re jealous, sure, but it’s also aspirational AF. So, we’re rounding up the best celebrity hair makeovers of 2022 as they come so you can drool with us.

Though, it’s not just about drooling over these looks. Saving this page and referring back to it at the hair salon can help you decide if curtain bangs or a bob is right for you. Hairstylists actually love when you show them photos because they can get a real feel of the vibe you’re looking for and can adjust the look into something that suits your wants and needs. This goes for color, too. Did you ask for balayage when you really meant a shadow root? It’s easier to just give examples of what you want.

Some of these celebrity looks aren’t permanent. Stars love to play around with wigs, extensions and faux bangs. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Real or faux, we’re taking inspo from our favorites to figure out our next look for 2022 and beyond.

HoYeon Jung

The Squid Game star showed off her new micro-bangs on Instagram while getting ready for a big award show. They’re so good, we’re starting to think even we can pull them off.

Zendaya

You’ll have to head over to E! News to see Zendaya’s new shorter hair with chunky highlights but trust us, it’s worth it. She was seen arriving on set for her upcoming movie “Challengers” with what looks like the perfect bob and blonde highlights.

Chrishell Stause

The Selling Sunset star “did a little chop” for the reality show’s big reunion! The shorter length looks great on her.

Jennie

“Don’t talk to me or my new hair,” Blackpink’s Jennie captioned the photo showing off her new shade.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Gigi Hadid

We almost didn’t recognize Hadid with this ultra-white blonde hair. It seems she’s keeping it because she’s been seen slaying street style with the platinum look.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Kendall Jenner

The model went copper for Milan Fashion Week and she looks incredible. She’s been seen out and about rocking the hair color so it’s safe to say, it’s staying put — for a bit, at least.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Alexa Demie

The Euphoria star got an unexpected haircut, which you can check out on the Daily Mail. It looks a lot like the bixie trend Sarah Hyland also tried.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Billie Eilish

The singer/songwriter traded in her more natural-looking brown hair for jet black. She can officially pull off any color!

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Britney Spears

The pop star is just like us. She dyed her hair purple because she “got bored,” which we can seriously relate to.

Billie Eilish

Just when we were getting used to a platinum blonde Billie Eilish, the star surprised us with a new, darker look. The brunette hue makes her blue eyes pop.

Lily Collins

The Emily in Paris star debuted chic new fringe thanks to hairstylist Gregory Russell. The piece-y style allows you to still see her iconic brows.

Kaia Gerber

If you were a teenager in the early aughts, chances are you had these exact eye-grazing bangs seen on Kaia Gerber. Everything old is officially new again! She looks great.

Dove Cameron Is the Latest Celeb to Go Dark for Fall & She Looks SO Different

Dove Cameron

Is blonde hair cheugy? That’s what we’re asking after seeing Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber and now Dove Cameron all going brunette for fall.

Florence Pugh

Whether it’s for a role or just because she wanted a big change, actor Florence Pugh looks stunning with her new shorter and darker hair.

Mrs. Bieber went brunette for fall and looks stunning! We love that her colorist left some lighter pieces in the front to brighten her face.

Selena Gomez

It feels like every fashion girl on my TikTok FYP is getting a bob for fall. Selena Gomez just joined the club with her chic, blunt style.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Megan Fox

Hello, new look! Fox showed off her icy new hair on Instagram, writing: “This is what the devil’s daughter looks like.” What’s probably a wig is for her 2022 movie Johnny & Clyde, a Bonnie & Clyde update, also starring Tyson Ritter. It looks so cool on her, she should probably rock it IRL, too.

Whitney Peak

AP Images.

Whitney Peak

The Gossip Girl reboot star hit up the Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 show rocking a platinum blonde mullet. It’s a far cry from her character Zoya’s naturally curly hair.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Gigi Hadid

Although it’s not set to air until September 23 on Amazon Prime Video, Savage x Fenty is giving us sneak peeks of Vol. 3 of the ultra-hot runway show. We spotted model mom Gigi Hadid and her new baby bangs! They’re probably clip-ins but they’re cute enough to do for real.

Irina Shayk

Christopher Smith/Invision/AP.

Irina Shayk

The model showed up to New York Fashion Week looking totally different — and seriously chic — in a bob with bangs. It’s most likely a wig but it looks so good, we’re hoping she does it for real.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Camila Cabello

The singer first took to TikTok to show off her chic new bob — a far departure from her usual long locks. Response from fans was mixed, with many disliking the change and saying she looks too much like “Fifth Harmony Camila.” We think she looks incredible and like the grown-up performer she’s turning into. Hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos is responsible for the blunt bob.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Chrissy Teigen

After seeing how good Kourtney Kardashian looks with short hair, Chrissy Teigen decided to join the celeb bob club. She credited hairstylist Sabrina Porsche for the sleek cut and style.

Lorde

We had to do a double-take when we saw Lorde’s (faux) blonde hair in her new music video for “Mood Ring.” She looks a lot like The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Kylie Jenner

OK, Kylie! The beauty boss rocked knee-length hair and a gold bikini to celebrate Kylie Cosmetics’ 24K Birthday Collection, which launches on August 10. Remember: this is the revamp with new formulas. And that

Zoey Deutch

Zoey Deutch

The actress was seen in full Y2K hair and clothing on the set of Hulu’s upcoming movie Not Okay.  Although it’s most likely a wig, Deutch famous friends love this look for her. “Wait I love your hair like this,” wrote Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch on Instagram. We couldn’t agree more.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Gabrielle Union

Often when a woman does the “big chop,” it’s because there’s damage to their hair or they had to cut it off for a reason. But Gabrielle Union is showing you can go ultra-short just because it looks amazing. “The movies always show women cutting their hair when all is lost but I wanted to know the feeling of making a change when things are gravy. It hits different and its foreign to me but I ❤❤❤ this new new,” she wrote on Instagram.

Emma Chamberlain

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of all of Gen Z making a hair appointment to copy Chamberlain’s cool-girl bangs.

Jennie

The Blackpink singer slays with Y2K-style full bangs. She credited hairstylist Preston Wada for the chop.

Margot Robbie

The actor covers this month’s British Vogue looking like a ’70s supermodel with caramel blonde hair and new bangs.

Paris Jackson

Y2K beauty and fashion are trending like crazy. Just take a look at Paris Jackson’s color-block hair. We’re loving the emerald green shade poking out from under her blond hair.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Florence Pugh

The actress is giving us Y2K vibes with pastel purple ends. We’re not sure who did the color (maybe she did it herself?) but the gorgeous waves were created by hairstylist Peter Lux.

Mullets are trending like crazy and apparently, Demi Lovato got the memo. The front of her hair is short and the back is all the way past her shoulders.

Just a week after debuting piece-y bangs, the Game of Thrones star went fully red! She shared a cute mirror photo wearing Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour merch and showing off her matching red Casetify Cottage Core case.

“Pelirroja,” Ciara wrote on Instagram. (Pelirroja is Spanish for redhead.) The singer is looking stunning with long ginger hair giving off a bit of a sexy princess Ariel vibe.

“Ya gal’s bang’d up,” the Game of Thrones star wrote on Instagram stories over the weekend. The choppy, piece-y style is different from the blunt bangs we’ve seen her rock before. We love this low-key fringe for summer because it’s easy to pin back or grow into curtain bangs.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Kim Kardashian

We’ve seen the media mogul try just about every hairstyle but the lob will always be our favorite. This one has a gorgeous curled-under ’70s vibe.

Charli D’Amelio

We’re obsessing over D’Amelio’s new chop with ’90s-style layers that feel so fresh for summer.

She’s back, baby! Hairstylist Clayton Hawkins gave Cosgrove pretty blonde highlights for the iCarly revival.

Kim Kardashian

Look who’s blonde again! But it was only for a few hours. Kardashian was shooting an upcoming campaign either for KKW Beauty or Skims. She actually did get her eyebrows bleached and we actually loved the look with her naturally dark hair. But then when they put the blonde wing on it was like, whoa. Right before she left the studio, she snapped a photo showing us she’s back to brunette again, including the brows.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Sabrina Carpenter

Say goodbye to curtain bangs and hello to ‘Bardot bangs!’ Hairstylist Laurie Heaps gave Sabrina Carpenter piece-y bombshell bangs inspired by the iconic French star Brigitte Bardot. We’re obsessed.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Selena Gomez

In an Instagram photo promoting her beauty brand, Rare Beauty, in April 2021, Gomez showed off her newly dyed blonde hair. The picture saw the former Disney Channel star light blonde tresses and dark roots. She most recently dyed her hair blonde in 2017 in a color dubbed by her hairstylist Nikki Lee as “Nirvana Blonde.” Gomez’s 2021 color was also done by Lee and Riawna Capri. “We’ve been doing Selena’s color for over a decade now. She typically keeps it pretty natural, but this time she went for a big change. This blonde is unique to her as we had to make sure there was an equal balance of cool and warm for her skin tone. It’s an edgier look and perfect for summer,” the hairstylists said in a statement.

Elizabeth Olsen

At the virtual launch of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier miniseries, Olsen debuted a totally different look from her usual copper-blonde hair. The bangs! The darker color! So chic.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Chrissy Teigen

We love how Teigen is playing around with wigs lately and experimenting with hair color. Although she only kept the silver shade for a day, we hope she brings it back. It looks amazing on her.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Kristen Bell

It seems like Bell is dressed up in character to film a TV show or movie but we’re loving these piecey bangs on her and we hope she keeps them up IRL.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

While filling us in on the Covid-19 relief package, AOC showed off her adorable new haircut. When followers commented saying they loved the chop, she replied, “Let’s not start another national crisis over it, right?”

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Gigi Hadid

The model mom returned to the runway, walking in the Versace fall 2021 show. Hairstylist Panos Papandrianos wrote “Ginger for Gigi” on Instagram, making us believe he really did dye the model’s hair this gorgeous red shade for the occasion.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Olivia Rodrigo

The ‘Drivers License’ singer jumped on the curtain bang trend thanks to hairstylist Clayton Hawkins. They’re subtle but make a big difference in her look. One interesting note: Sabrina Carpenter has them too.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Lana Condor

The actress looks so great in this pastel pink wig, maybe she’s considering doing it IRL? “Get ‘Anyone Else But You; to 5 mil streams and I’ll keep it,” she wrote on Instagram. Though, she told STYLECASTER last year, “I don’t know that I’d ever dye dye my hair. I think my mom would kill me, you’d know?”

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Ashley Graham

The model had everyone thinking maybe she got a pixie cut but her hair is actually the result of new growth post hair loss. “Postpartum baby hairs come through!” she wrote on Instagram.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Emma Roberts

A new color and cut for the birthday girl! “Emma always looks and feels her best blonde,” said her hairstylist and Nine Zero One co-founder Nikki Lee. “We decided to keep her a warm blonde and went for a ’90s supermodel vibe. With a new baby and a big birthday, we went out with a bang! Lisa Satorn added extensions for length and fullness. I kept her haircut free and flowing with piecey layers around the face.” Lee keeps her client’s hair healthy with the In Common 3 Step Treatment System ($105 at In Common).

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Katy Perry

Why not start with one of the biggest hair chameleons? Though she’s been ultra-blonde for a while, we can’t help but miss a brunette Katy Perry. It’s classically chic and fits her personality. So, when we saw these photos of backstage at Jimmy Kimmel Live, we were so excited to see the long brown hair. But it seems it’s a wig and she’s already back to blonde.

Joey King Looks So Badass With a Short Pink Bob

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

Joey King has been giving it her all on this Bullet Train press tour. She stars in the film alongside huge celebs such as Karen Fukuhara, Brad Pitt and Zazie Beetz. Maybe because of that, she’s brought her A-game when it comes to her red carpet looks. At a special screen in Berlin earlier this week, King totally changed up her beauty look with a short pink bob — a far departure from her usual long brown hair.

At first, we weren’t sure if King bleached and chopped her hair for real. The wig is that good. Now that she’s hit another Bullet Train premiere with her usual brown hair, we know for sure the pink look was faux. Still, that’s the way to do it. Why destroy your strands with bleach when you can put on a really good wig and fool everyone? Hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos was responsible for the dramatic bob. He shared photos on his Instagram and spilled the actor is wearing an all-black Balenciaga ‘fit. The whole look together can’t be described as anything other than badass.

joey king hair

AP Images.

King’s hair is such a show-stopper, we always missed the makeup. How dare we. Makeup artist Polly Osmond killed the glam, with a dramatic smoky eye that has a bit of pink-purple shimmer to perfectly compliment the hair. Osmond revealed she used the Pat McGrath Subliminal Dark Star MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette with Stila Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Vivid Amethyst. (Both of these are older products and not currently shoppable, sorry!)

To finish the dramatic eye, Osmond used MAC Cosmetics Eye Kohl Eyeliner in Smolder and Nars Climax Extreme Mascara ($24 at Nars). As for the perfect pink lips, if you’re a Charlotte Tilbury stan, you’ll recognize the discontinued Super Nineties shade. It’s the perfect tawny-brown matte lipstick.

King has a few more big red carpets for Bullet Train and we’ll definitely be watching.
