5 Short Hairstyles for Women Over 60 with Fine Hair

short hairstyles fine hair

Do you have fine hair? Fine hair is different from thin or thinning hair and means that the diameter of your hair strand is small. You were born with fine hair as opposed to thinning hair, which you can acquire as you get older. You can have a lot or a little fine hair on your scalp. We often refer to fine hair as “baby hair.”

Are you interested in short hairstyles for women over 60 with fine hair? We’ve put together a list of short hairstyle advice for older women with fine short hair.

  1. All About Color – Match your scalp color.
  2. Straighten Your Curls – Make your hair look thicker.
  3. Style High – Create some top volume.
  4. Go Messy – Create a bold, trendy look.
  5. Layer Softly – Longer layers work best on thin hair.

Having fine hair can slightly limit you to what hairstyles you can adopt. Some styles simply look and hold better on women with thicker hair. Also, some hairstyles suit fine haired beauties better than thick haired ones. It’s always best to work with what you’ve got.

Products That Visually Improve Fine Hair

That being said, many products have been introduced to help make fine hair feel and look thicker. There are now shampoos, mousses, creams, sprays, and gels to help thicken fine hair for styling. It may be a trial-and-error product test-run before you find the products that are right for your hair.

Here is a list of a few of our favorite hair products to help give volume and fullness to fine hair.

Kerastase Densifique Densimorphose Thickening Treatment Mousse

Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray

Living Proof Full Thickening Cream

Dove Dry Shampoo Volume and Fullness

BondiBoost Hair Thickening Therapy Shampoo

5 Short Hairstyles for Fine Hair

Many fine-haired women prefer to wear their hair short as they get older. This is, of course, a personal preference, and there is nothing wrong with wearing your thin hair long if you wish.

All About Color

Having fine and thinning hair at the same time can often leave your scalp looking bare. One way to take the attention away from your scalp is to color your hair a similar color to your scalp and to keep the hair short. This way there won’t be a heavy contrast between your hair and your scalp.

Straighten Your Curls

Another way to cover more scalp area and to make curly fine hair look thicker is to straighten natural curls. You can also style a side-part to bring more cover to the top of your scalp.

Style High

A great way to style your short and fine hair is to use a hot air brush to create volume at the top. Spray your hair with a strong-hold hairspray to keep your style fresh all day.

Go Messy

Feeling bold and trendy? Opt for a messy and choppy look for your fine hair. Use a thickening and texturizing product to achieve the look. Be careful not to use an oily texturizer as this can weigh your fine hair down. You can also take it a step further and add a fun color, like red or purple.

Layer Softly

You have to go easy on the layering when you have fine hair. Layers can take away volume from fine hair – and definitely stay away from the feathered layers. Go for longer layers that still provide movement but won’t make your hair look thinner.

Yes, You Can Realize Your Travel Dreams at Any Age!

slow travel

It seems that everybody has a bucket list these days, and for many of us that list includes travel. Even though my husband and I have been traveling together for over 20 years, our bucket list of places we want to go keeps getting longer.

Vacationing somewhere for one or two weeks never cut it for us. We even took two, yearlong sabbaticals and lived overseas, but our itch for more travel remained unfulfilled. So, with our list getting longer and time to see it all getting shorter, we made the decision to adopt the slow travel lifestyle.

So, What Is Slow Travel?

For us slow travel means making a base in a city and visiting everything in that section of the country that we want to see, at our own pace. We might stay three or four weeks, or six months. Then we move on to the next city or country and establish a new base. Having a base allows us to rest up and stay healthy in between our adventures.

We’ve actually been slow traveling for over a year and a half now and are loving it. We love to travel and experience not only the natural beauty of a place, but also to immerse ourselves into other cultures and learn about local traditions, foods, and languages.

When we made the decision to adopt the slow travel lifestyle, we retired a little early. We freed ourselves of possessions, selling our house, cars, furniture, and putting a very few sentimental items into storage as we plan to slow travel the world.

Currently, our world travel plans cover the next decade or so, fingers crossed. Of course, not everyone wants to make such a radical move as to sell all their possessions and become a constant traveler, but it enabled us to do what we’ve always dreamed of.

Not only did it give us a lot more money to travel with, it also took a lot of worry off of our shoulders. Of course, our plans do include regular trips back to visit family and friends.

Since we started our adventure, we have discovered that there are quite a few of us retired slow travelers out here, some in their 90s; you just don’t hear much about us. We’re hoping to change that. Growing older doesn’t mean having to limit yourself or your travel options; it means embracing them. We continue to make adjustments to our travel style as we go.

Learn Something New

My husband is a videographer by trade, so we started our own YouTube travel channel, Over the Hill and Far Away, to document our adventures as we slow travel around the world. I guess that makes us digital nomads as well.

We did have a learning curve. Even though we didn’t grow up with a camera phone in our hands, we are eagerly embracing our YouTube journey and learning the technology along the way. In addition to YouTube, we can also be found on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

Establishing a Base

Since we started our slow travel world adventure, we have been across Mexico.

We spent six months in Puerto Vallarta, then visited central Mexico where we made a video on What to See and Do in the Historic and Colorful City of Guanajuato, and three months in Merida. You can watch our video below.

In each location we were able to not only familiarize ourselves with the city, but also took side trips to surrounding towns and attractions making videos along the way. I was also able to finish up my Bachelor’s Degree in English, online, during our time in Mexico. I started my degree at age 55 and graduated at 59 (you really are never too old).

After Mexico, we spent a month in Porto, Portugal. There was so much to see and do in Porto and the surrounding area that we will definitely be going back to spend more time in Portugal in the future.

Next, we spent three months in South Africa, basing ourselves in Cape Town and exploring the coast and the wine route.

We then took a month to drive across the vast desert landscapes of Namibia.

Currently, we are in Bangkok, Thailand and will be spending the next six months or so exploring Southeast Asia.

Start Planning Now

The number one thing you hear from people approaching retirement is that they would like to do some traveling. In our experience with retired friends and family, if you don’t go into retirement with a plan, extended traveling will most likely not happen. If it’s your dream to really get out there and travel in retirement, the planning should start now.

Whether you want to travel overseas, live the RV lifestyle for a few months a year, or plan travel excursions with your grandkids, start thinking about where you want to go, and what you want to see. The more planning you do now, the more rewarding your experiences will be.

A lot of research, planning, and prep work went into beginning our slow travel lifestyle, but worrying about our age was not at the top of the list. We know we’re getting older, and we know our limitations. We also exercise, watch our weight, try to eat right, and luckily, neither of us take any prescription medications.

Getting older does not have to mean limiting yourself. For us, now is the time to try new things, go new places on our own schedule, and learn along the way. This is what we have spent years working towards, and we are embracing the adventure.

We have found that old saying to be true, “Anytime (or any age) is the right time to start something new!”

How to Stop “Blending in” at 60 and Beyond

I believe that later is greater. Of course, I didn’t believe that for a long time. I never really thought about becoming middle-aged or even beyond.

As I’ve shared with many, I never thought about aging because I wasn’t going to let it happen to me.

I was, of course, very wrong.

And now, my mission is to help Midlife women get visible with their style and confidence.

We Matter!

Many of my clients feel that they are invisible. One recently shared, “I am blending in; nobody knows I’m in the room.”

It happens. I’ve felt like this, and to be honest, this is one of the main reasons I started Fiercely50ish. As I told you earlier, I wasn’t going to age, ha!

I found myself surrounded by people who didn’t value my wisdom, my contributions, or what I had to offer. I, too, felt as if I was unnoticed.

I felt powerless. As if I was watching it happen in slow motion.

Blending in can lead to feelings of not-enough-ness, heading down a slippery hill of no longer caring and even invisibility. It’s not a place where I wanted to be, and it’s what propels me to help women step into their power and magnificence.

Aging is a gift. We don’t have to blend in! And it’s a gift that I want all of you to enjoy!

Before I share my tips, I have a question for all of you.

What do you envision when you read or hear the phrase, “blending in?”

I’ll go first!

I think of makeup since it’s important to make sure that it looks seamless, hence blended!

I also think of a beverage that is concocted in the blender. This could be anything from a smoothie to a margarita.

What I don’t think of when I read or hear the phrase “blending in” is how I am showing up, especially as I age.

The definition of change varies among all of us. What you feel comfortable with may not work for others. Do what works for you. If you’re OK with blending in, that’s great.

If you’re willing to experiment, so you aren’t blending in, wonderful! Here are five tips to help you! Consider one or all of them and have fun!

Accessories

In my opinion, accessories are often overlooked and not fully understood. Accessories can complete your look with little to no effort, depending on what you do with them.

Your style spans from head to toe, and accessories can easily enhance your look. Start with switching up your glasses. Are you wearing the right shape for your face? Consider the color of your frames. I’ve seen many of my clients change their look simply by changing their spectacles!

Do you have a signature accessory? Choosing a pair of earrings, a necklace, bracelet, or ring can help define your style. Select something that has sentimental value to you or reminds you of a happy memory.

A fun bag/purse or shoes can take your outfits from drab to fab.

Hair – Style and Color

This may be my favorite way to look outstanding. When was the last time you changed your hair? Pay attention to hairstyles and colors you like. Have a serious chat with your stylist. Discuss if:

  • It aligns with your lifestyle and the shape of your beautiful face
  • The cut is one you can easily style and maintain
  • Highlights will enhance your look

Your stylist can offer such great insight into haircuts and colors that will work for you. Tap into their expertise and have them teach you how to maintain a cut – tips and tricks of styling using tools and products. Don’t worry; it isn’t difficult. I was truly shocked at how easy it was when I consulted with my stylist on maintaining my new hairstyles and cuts.

Signature Color

Just like your hair, adjusting your color can make a big difference. Maybe it’s time to have your colors done again. I just did (more on this later). Remember, our inherent colors change as we age; what looked good five to 10 years ago may not be the case today. Just think, there’s a signature color or two waiting for you!

And your new colors aren’t just for your clothes. Remember, your style covers the real estate from head to toe, so take advantage of this space. Weave ‘signature color’ in your makeup; change up your lip color, whether it’s lipstick or lip gloss. Or adjust your blush color, and if you wear eye makeup, consider using other colors that enhance your face, from eyeshadow to eyeliner and, yes, even mascara.

A client of mine changed the color of mascara she was wearing from brown to navy, and it made such a difference.

Having your nails filed and polished is always fun and another way to add color to your look. Whether you do your own mani or get one done, experiment with colors. Wear one that expresses who you are and with manis it’s so easy to do this.

Dressing Confidently

Confidence is your best accessory, and I make it easy with the Fiercely50ish Wardrobe Rx Capsules! Capsule wardrobes eliminate guessing what to wear each season as you elevate your look, whether you’re running errands, meeting friends for lunch, volunteering, or really – wherever you’re going or whatever you’re doing.

Just in time for fall, you can make this your most stylish season ever with the 2022 Fall Classic Capsule with a French Twist. 30 pieces (tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories) create 90 outfits!

Imagine the Possibilities

The definition of change varies among all of us. What you feel comfortable with may not work for others. Do what works for you. If you’re fine with blending in, that’s great.

If you’re willing to experiment, so you aren’t blending in, wonderful!

Small steps or bigger ones can make a difference in how we feel and show up. The choices are limitless, and I encourage you to imagine the “what ifs.” And if you don’t love the outcome, change it up to something you do love.

Enjoy the ride as you experiment with ways to stop blending in! Remember, you’re beautiful and worthy every single day!

Let’s Have a Conversation:

What do you envision when you read or hear the phrase, “Blending in?” Have you tried to blend in – or to stand out? What do you do in either direction?

Diana Jenkins’ Black and Green Snap Sleeve Maxi Dress

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 12 Episode 20 Fashion

While Diana Jenkins’ first season on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has come with mixed reviews (I mean, whose doesn’t?!), in my mind this her black and green snap sleeve maxi dress on tonight’s episode does not. There’s something about a snap sleeve that I always love, so I am here for it.

Now that we have a preview of her this fab look, I can’t wait for the full episode. But like everyone else, I’m still hoping for footage of when a certain someone allegedly snapped even more than Diana’s dress.
