If you’ve taken a single scroll on the makeup side of TikTok, there’s a 99.99% chance that you’ve heard of Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Highlighter Wand. The craze began when singer Madison Beer revealed in a Vogue makeup tutorial that the product makes her feel like a “forest nymph” and a “fairy” with the supernatural, sculpted glow it achieves. Calling it ‘viral’ feels like a complete understatement, as the product has sold out multiple times. But with the price tag being $42, some people (like me) just can’t justify spending so much on one product. Luckily, we don’t have to break the bank thanks to Beauty Pie’s Triple Beauty Luminizing Highlighter Wand.

A+ makeup products don’t need to come at a high price, and Beauty Pie proves that point with their version of the highlighter wand. The vegan, fragrance-free cream formula, easily dispensed and applied with their soft sponge applicator, contains soft-blur microspheres and UltraGlow coated pearls that offer a natural-looking glow without glitter. For an all-over radiant look, mix the highlighter into your foundation. Or, if you prefer a more contoured look, sweep the product along the tops of your cheekbones, down the center of your nose, to the inner corners of your eyes, and then at the arch of your browbones. The highlighter can even be worn alone for those no-makeup makeup days, a la Hailey Bieber.

In case you were wondering, the clock app community also gives their stamp of approval on this dupe. TikToker Kelsey Martin reviewed the brand’s Highlighter Wand, saying that Beauty Pie’s version “is slightly glowier” than Charlotte Tilbury’s. One reviewer echoed Martin’s thoughts, writing that the Highlighter Wand “gives that natural ‘lit from within’ look where applied.”

Minoxidil Side Effects Are No Joke—Here Are 11 Alternatives

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

Have you noticed a lot of hair on your brush or pillow lately? Or maybe your hairline is starting to recede? If so, you might be experiencing hair loss. Although often associated with men, hair loss is a common issue for all genders. A treatment for hair loss is minoxidil (oral and topical) but it’s not without its problems. Minoxidil side effects can be serious but more so for certain folks, so it’s important to know where you fall.

Also known as alopecia, hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, stress, certain medications, and even improper hair care practices. Products with minoxidil work well to stimulate hair growth and even to slow balding. But not everyone should take the oral OR use the topical treatment. “Someone should not take oral minoxidil for hair loss are if they have a history of a rare adrenal gland tumor called pheochromocytoma, or if they are allergic to minoxidil,” says Dr. Toyin Falola, dermatologist at Ro. (A US-licensed healthcare provider at Ro can get you minoxidil if you are a good candidate.) “People with certain medical conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure or stroke should also speak with a provider as minoxidil may not be right for them,” she adds.

Both oral and topical minoxidil are also not recommended if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or are currently breastfeeding. This especially cuts out a lot of people. Otherwise, minoxidil is generally well-tolerated, Dr. Falola says. “The most common side effect of taking minoxidil is growing hair not only on your scalp but also in areas like the temples or sideburns,” she explains. “Known as hypertrichosis, this hair growth is usually mild and doesn’t mean you need to stop treatment. Other side effects seen in a small group of people include feeling lightheaded, retaining extra fluid, headaches or having a faster heart rate.”

Dr. Falola recommends chatting with your doctor about minoxidil alternatives, which can include “prescription oral medications, in-office procedural interventions, supplements, and light devices, like red light therapy.”

You can also try some of these scalp products below, each of which has a loyal following who say it really works. And there’s no minoxidil in any of ’em.

10 Happiness Factors Determine Success with Online Dating

happiness and dating

Ok, stay with me on this one as your happiness level is a crucial factor which dictates successful outcomes with online dating. You’ve all probably seen Harvard’s ongoing Happiness Project or the yearly stats on the Danes and Swedes being the happiest people in the world.

Why does this matter? As a dating coach and former matchmaker, I see some patterns when it comes to dating.

Exactly how does your personal happiness affect your dating life? As intelligent women, you already know this is incredibly obvious. You can’t expect another person to make you happy if you are unhappy. Agree. But read the 10 factors and think them through.

First, a Short Story

Yesterday, while on a 5-mile walk with Luna, my golden retriever and happiest walking buddy in the world, I was chatting with one of my sisters. (I come from a large Irish family so there’s lots of us!) Bottom line is, she’s been bummed out about her love life over the past year. And she is a pretty, in great shape, 60-year-old.

But the stuff she is doing will get her nowhere and I told her so bluntly.

Then I asked her, “Josie, on a scale of 1-10, how happy are you in general?” Josie paused, then said a 7. “Ok,” I told her, “I can work with that.”

Had she said 1-4, I would have pointed her toward a therapist – which I most certainly am not. But a 7, heck yes, I can work with that. BTW, anyone who thinks she’s a 10, likely needs therapy too.

Personal Happiness Check

Below are some ideas on how to strengthen your happiness factor and consequently, improve your love and dating life as well.

So, have you done a personal happiness check lately? Here are 10 things to think about:

Social Connections Are Really Good for You

Why? Because loneliness kills. It forges isolation and unhappiness, especially if you don’t like being on your own.

Binging

Do you watch Ted Lasso, Yellowstone, The Diplomat, The Office, etc. for 3-4 hours each evening? Add those hours up and think what you could be doing! Plus, binging disconnects you from people.

Self-Care
Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive. Nothing like a costly massage/facial each week. It could simply mean scheduling a weekly lunch with a friend.

Your Health
This needn’t be starting to train for the NY marathon. It might be trying a hiking group, Pilates classes, lifting weights with a personal trainer, hitting 10,000 steps on your Fitbit. Endorphins feel so good!

Try Something New Every Week
In my line of work, I get to know my clients so well. Some things they try are self-defense classes, painting, a basketball league for men over 50, archery classes. You know the big side benefit? You’ll meet new people too.

Pick Quality Over Quantity
It’s the quality of your close relationships that ups your happiness quotient, not the number of acquaintances you acquire.

Hold Yourself Accountable
Accountability is important, and you know this because you did it in your professional life, raising children, etc. Why would you discount accountability when it comes to your personal and love life?

Step Away and Take a Minute for Yourself
That could be reading. It could be meditating. It could be a restorative yoga class. Hey, I see more and more high-powered men and women taking yoga (when some used to make fun of it!).

Just Do It
Let me borrow a tip from Phil Knight here (I just saw Air and loved it), because regret does not taste good. So, what if you are high profile and your photo is on an online dating site? And someone sees you? Well, they are on it too. Get over these obstacles.

Know Your Self-Worth
We are all individuals with different qualities. Know your worth, and you won’t feel insecure about dating and relationships. And self-confidence is sooo sexy!

Your happiness matters. Be happy with yourself before pursuing a relationship. As a dating coach, I can tell you this: it’s fun and never, ever boring to help happy people find a match.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

Are you a happy person? On a scale from 1 to 10, what is your happiness level? Do you think unhappy people can – or should – pursue a romantic relationship? Have you dated a person who is happy with themselves? How does this compare to the opposite scenario?

Whatever Happened to Grandma’s Hats?

grandma's hats

I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel like I see women wearing hats much anymore. As a child, we once lived with my grandmother for about six months while our house was being built and my favorite thing to do was play in her hat closet.

Grandma’s Hats

After she passed away, I was blessed with some of the hats from that closet. I promised myself I would start wearing them when I turned 50. Well, that was 10 years ago, and I can count on one hand how many times I’ve worn one of the hats.

Wearing Hats

Maybe I don’t wear them because I live in Arizona, and she lived in Wisconsin. Several of the hats are for colder weather, which we rarely have here. Maybe I don’t wear them because I feel like they have to be kept for a special occasion. Or maybe I don’t wear them because I feel like I stick out too much in a crowd.

Hat Compliments

The last couple of times I wore one was to a Women’s Breakfast and a Ladies’ Tea at our church. Both times many women, even those I didn’t yet know, made a point to stop and tell me how nice my hat looked. Or to tell me that some women don’t think they look good in hats, but my hats look great on me!

Yet when I look around when I am out and about, I don’t see many hats being worn. Only one other woman was wearing a hat at both of my church events. But when I do see another woman wearing a hat, I usually think: Nice! That looks so stylish! She looks wonderful! I wonder where she got that cool hat! Why don’t I wear hats more often?

The Hat Closet

When I played with my grandmother’s hats as a kid, they were mostly in their own boxes. She stored them in an upstairs bedroom in a small walk-in closet. There were shelves on both sides of the closet with no hanging bars, so I called it her hat closet. It felt special just to be in there! You can hear a story about my grandmother, and me wearing one of her hats, on my YouTube channel.

Styles of Hats

As a child, I had no idea there were names for each of the hat styles. I am still learning but have come to realize some of my favorites. I love the Fedora, a wool, wide-brimmed hat that always seemed like a fancy cowgirl hat. The Newsboy and Beret hats I love but because of their winter fabrics (a wool cable sweater fabric and a lovely mohair), I can hardly ever wear them in Arizona.

One drawback for me is that some hats flatten my hair on top which is probably why I especially like the Gatsby Cloche hat because its design doesn’t even allow the top of the hat to touch my hair.

The Family Cottage

Some of Grandma’s hats went to the family cottage, where we kids were allowed to use them for dress-up playtime. What a treat! Some were velvet, some had a brooch on the side, some had netting or flowers, and others were straw, garden, or derby hats.

Hats were a common part of women’s attire back then and like most fashion items, I assume they will keep going in and out of style. I keep thinking of them as a tribute to my grandmother. After all, some of them are almost 100 years old now!

Hats as Treasures

I’ve decided that treasures like these, even if they’re a treasure just to me, are meant to be enjoyed so I am trying to wear my hats more often than Easter, Mother’s Day, and church events. I’m also thinking about a way to display some of them in my home. That way I will see them often and be more likely to wear them.

Passing Down Treasures

I have also realized that this family heirloom collection is something I want to share with my daughter and her daughter so I am putting that in writing on a Personal Property Disposition List. After all, some of these intentions need to be put down on paper or no one will ever know about them!

Surprisingly, or not, it is the personal items, “the stuff,” as I often refer to it, that cause the most anguish in families after someone has passed away. What one person prioritizes, another does not. I remember cringing when I learned that my father had thrown away boxes of slides after my grandmother died. I would have loved to have perused, reminisced, and kept some of them.

One of my clients walked his adult children through his home to clarify values and ask what they wanted as he wrote his estate planning wishes. Another had her daughter go through her jewelry to immediately begin enjoying some pieces she no longer wore.

Your Solution

We all have different situations and unique solutions, but we need to think about them to make the decisions that matter to us. Whether you have hats, other family memory items, or things of value, I encourage you to have a conversation with yourself about your wishes and how/when you will express them. If you would like some assistance, I have tools to help you with those decisions.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

I’m curious what hat stories you have in your life. Maybe they are a more common part of your attire where you live? And what about the “non-hat” items in your family? Have you decided what to do with them? How have heirloom items been distributed in your family?
