Housewives Holiday Beauty Gift Guide

This post is a sponsored partnership between BigBlondeHair.com and Nordstrom, although all thoughts and picks are my own! We may receive a percentage of sales for items purchased from Nordstrom through affiliate links in this post. The celebrity names mentioned are in no way affiliated with this post or endorsing any products mentioned.

The holidays will be here before you know it and thankfully, once again, Nordstrom has our backs with the most amazing collection of beauty gifts and sets to date. Whether you’re looking for a small yet chic gift for a friend or to splurge on something for your sig other (or yourself, because, well, after this year we all deserve it), I’ve found amazing options that are tried and true by our fave celebs.

I would LOVE to get any of these gifts. The amazing thing about gifting someone products from luxury beauty brands is that while people may not have yet tried the products themselves the reputation of these brands speak for themselves and packs a real punch when the open the package! Can’t afford to buy your bestie a YSL purse? Don’t worry, a YSL lipstick set has a luxe feel for a small, small fraction of the price! Plus, the savings on a lot of these gifts are not to be passed up.

Since there are so many amazing choices that are ALL great it may be hard to narrow down, so I added my top 8 faves at the bottom which I’ll totally be scooping up for the people on my list along with why! However, even things that aren’t on the list are things I’d love to spot under my tree.

And with that, happy shopping and happy gifting…

The Realest Housewife,

Big Blonde Hair

(In no particular order)

1 Lancer Skincare Rapid Results Set $50

After Tracy Tutor revealed she is obsessed with Dr. Lancer’s products when I interviewed her on Closet Confessions I followed suit. They’re pricey (like no regular sized individual product is even under $50), so giving someone the ability to try a variety and decide on their face is amazing. I gave this set to my mom for her birthday and she loves it!

2 Dior Lip Glow + Care Set $70 ($100 Value)

After spotting Meredith Marks and Kathy Hilton using gloss by this brand, in addition to having some other Real Housewives fans on the roster, we know this gift is fit for even the most fabulous. This set is in a neutral, almost sheer color so it’s a no-brainer for anyone! I’m also a huge fan of their lash primer which is also included.

3 Glam Glow Thirsty Mud Hydrating Mask $25

I think I have given this gift to just about all of my close friends and it’s the best. It smells amazing and is a mask you can rub into your skin after you let it sit to maximize moisture. I’m scooping this up this year to take to a holiday “My Favorite Things” happy hour! It’s a great gift at an affordable price.

4 Mario Badescu Full Size Drying Lotion, Face Mist + Lip Balm $19 ($33 Value)

If the person you’re gifting doesn’t use Mario Badescu products yet, they are soon to be hooked. Whether we’re talking about Lala Kent, fans of BBH, BBH’s Faryn or my husband and I, we all love these products!

5 La Mer Soothing Regimine Set $95

Everyone knows La Mer is synonymous with luxury, and it comes with the price tag to prove it. To buy the cream alone starts at $95, so this is a great way to give a taste of luxury to anyone who seeks it.

6 Charlotte Tilbury Cream $70

This skincare brand has always been a celeb favorite, and after seeing these products on the Real Housewives of New York and in Melissa Gorga and Kathy Hilton’s bathrooms, it’s safe to say even our fanciest friends will be more than happy to put any of these products on their face.

7 Tom Ford Soleil Body Oil Set $72 ($90 Value)

The minute we spotted this product on Kyle Richards’ vanity I needed it. The minute we spotted it on Tracy Tutor’s vanity soon after I NEEEEEDED it! This is a great opportunity to gift a friend both shades (to buy just one full size is $100, and these are a little under half the size each), especially if they have an upcoming trip and are about to shimmer in the sun, or just want to feel like they do.

8 Peter Thomas Roth Peel + Reveal Best-Seller Set $68

Peter Thomas Roth eye patches are also a fave of Kyle Richards and Tracy Tutor, and now mine! I’m so into this brand and this combo is the gift that will keep on giving!

Southern Charm Instagram Beauty 2021

Good Morning Gorgeous! ☀💄 Not only did we recently catch a peek of Madison LeCroy getting ready with hot rollers in her hair on the ‘Gram, but also one of her vanity where we spotted a cute little lip gloss sitting beside our go-to lip mask. And although I personally haven’t tried this exact product yet (I’m currently loving this gloss by the same brand in ‘Rosewood’ though!), you better believe it’s now on my must-have-makeup list that I likely won’t need to be checking twice.

Can You Ever Really Know Someone?

how to make friends as an adult

My sister and I exchange emails at least once a week. Sometimes I’m shocked when I read her impressions of something I’ve said. It’s eye-opening and gives me a different lens through which to see myself.

Brought up in a small town in northern Minnesota, we were raised by parents who had a solid marriage. We went to the same Lutheran Church, the same grade school, and graduated from the same high school. I’m the oldest. She’s the middle. Born two years after me, she was close in age to the youngest, our brother.

After graduation, our paths diverged, like the Robert Frost poem I love, and in the ensuing 40 years other factors influenced who we’ve become.

Considering Different Lenses and Attitude Filters

This month I’m taking an online course on writing. Much of the writing I’ve submitted for the assignments comes from memories of childhood. My sister reads everything I write.

In a recent email exchange she commented, “I love hearing you tell the stories the way you see them – so different from the way I see them. I guess we all see things through our own attitude filter. It’s liberating to consider a different view!”

And then she asked, “Where do these attitude filters come from?”

The Source of Attitude Filters

The question threw me, not because I had no answer, but because this is something I think about all the time. I had assumed, quite obviously and incorrectly, that everyone does. With my fingers flying, I hammered out a list and wrote the following response:

Attitude filters, filters of any kind, come from many sources:

  • Where you were born;
  • Your birth order;
  • Who raised you;
  • What happened to you along the way;
  • What work you do (did);
  • Where you live(d);
  • What prejudices you were subjected to, knowingly or unknowingly;
  • What fears you have (had);
  • What was your religious training;
  • Where you were educated and by whom;
  • Who were your friends;
  • Who were you enemies;
  • Who encouraged you and how;
  • Who discouraged you and how;
  • Who you admire(d);
  • What TV programming, movies, music, books… you enjoyed… and the list goes on…

I think it’s important to realize that all these things impact our core belief system – that mysterious conglomerate of truths that subconsciously instructs our every decision – which may not be “truth” at all.

Differences in Awareness

Then my sister surprised me a second time. She asked if I’d found the list somewhere, or compiled it from years of study.

This isn’t some stranger, mind you. This is a person I lived with growing up and have exchanged thoughts, writings, and ideas with for 60 plus years! This is a person I should know well; someone I expect to also know me. The fact that my thought process was so foreign to her made me wonder how odd I really am!

The items I listed are the measuring sticks by which I daily monitor my responses to life, people and the events around me. Uppermost in my mind is that I was born white in the richest, most powerful country in the world. I am well-educated, well-traveled and have enjoyed privileges that are unequaled anywhere.

The people in my present community had none of those advantages. Perhaps this kind of awareness of difference is easier living in a foreign country. The inequalities are ever-present, and to ignore them, one runs the risk of causing offense and deepening misconceptions.

It is, however, equally as important to be cognizant of our own attitude filters when we’re in familiar surroundings rubbing up against people more like ourselves. In that situation there’s a tendency to assume we share commonalities and that we’re very much alike. Those assumptions may be far from the truth.

Nobody has identical sets of inputs (see, the list). Therefore, nobody will ever think about things exactly like anyone else, even close siblings.

The Danger of Sameness

Another danger inherent to living among people mostly like ourselves is that the “others” are out of sight. They don’t challenge us. They keep to their own communities where they also feel less challenged to understand differences. Then, when something happens, there’s no basis for agreement. It’s us against them, them against us.

Here in Bali, I’m a minority. My skin color, my language, my heritage, my culture, my beliefs, the way I dress, my manners, and the very way I think are at odds with the majority in this country. I could choose to live in a cloistered ex-pat community where I’m sheltered among my own kind. Many do. But it would rob me of one of the greatest joys of my life.

That joy is the privilege of living intertwined with the Balinese people, listening, asking questions, being amazed at our similarities and blown away by our differences, striving to understand, which I never fully can because of that list.

If you have a sibling or friend you know well, or think you do, talk with them about this attitude filter list and tell us what you discover. Do you think you can ever really know someone? Or, can you know only those things about them that mirror your own experience? Please share in the conversation.

Opening the Door to Love Again After a Loss

senior dating advice

Not long ago, I met a very lovely lady who enthusiastically shared her story of love lost and found again. She explained how her husband had died 20 years earlier. Years later, after vowing that she would never love anyone else, this woman found herself falling in love again.

When we lose a spouse, the last thought on our minds is being in a relationship again. As we deal with the intense pain that we find ourselves experiencing, this becomes the overarching theme of our lives until further notice. We’re searching for answers and still longing to be with our lost spouse just one more time.

Pain from Loss Is Personal

But as time progresses – as it will with no regard for one’s circumstance – and our pain from loss begins to ease, we will begin to rebuild our lives alone. How everyone decides to tackle their situation varies from person to person.

Some may throw themselves into work. Others may decide to cultivate new friendships or spend time with old chums. Still others might join clubs specific to an interest, or become more active in civic and church organizations. Many may consider volunteer opportunities. Some widows journal about their experience of loss. And then there are those who refrain from dealing with the pain, burying it deep within. They busy themselves with a variety of activities that become distractions from the acute discomfort and sadness.

Loss and Loneliness

One theme that all who have lost spouses share is the loneliness that ensues after loss. After a while many would like to seek companionship, but they don’t know how to go about it. Oftentimes, the desire to pursue a new relationship is influenced by advice from those around them.

So many men and women have been “off the dating circuit for a long while,“ and feel uncertain about how to go about seeking companionship. They often turn to friends for advice and sometimes the news can be discouraging. Many will hear “how bad it is out there.” And there are many stories that would frighten even the most courageous into remaining solo forever.

But we must be our own judge of these matters. Whether we are ready to open our lives to someone new is a decision only we can make. The widower or widow are the only ones who can give themselves permission to move on.

Risking Love Again

I understand how so many readers will read this and say, “Oh, I will never move on.” Or, “I’m not at that point yet and probably never will be.” However one chooses to remain, remember that you should never give up hope on your future happiness.

When you begin to feel the absence of the deceased spouse less and less and more of the presence, wholeness and wellness of who you are becoming without them in your life, you will be able to decide if finding a new partner is right for you.

Here are some things you should think about when deciding if you are ready to find love again:

  • Have you taken the time to grieve?
  • Have you thought about what you would be looking for in a new partner?
  • You may feel lonely, but are you ready to have a new partner in your life?
  • Are you willing to face the possibility of losing another companion or spouse?

We must get rid of the guilt and fear that are part of the aftermath of loss. As we gradually do, we will begin to consider if we wish to think about the possibility of finding love again. You can read my blog about Risking Love Again.

If you are a widow, are you open to finding new love in your life? Will you be looking for someone like your spouse or someone different? Why? How did you know you were ready to open to love again after a loss? Let’s start a conversation.
