Luxe Gua Sha Tools to Lift, Contour & Refine Your Angles in Just Minutes

Beauty tools, whether it be jade rollers, facial massagers, or microcurrent devices have rapidly become one of the biggest trends in skincare in recent years, and while some of them surely seem like nothing more than a gimmick suitable selfies rather than improving your complexion and refining your angles, a lot of them actually do yield some pretty impressive results. One of the latest tools garnering popularity by both beauty influencers and the professionals are gua sha facial tools. Originating from Chinese medicine, these jade, amethyst, and rose gold gadgets are used to contour the jawline, stimulate blood flow to the skin’s surface, and help promote lymphatic drainage—just to name a few benefits.

Gua Sha loosely translated to “scraping” in Chinese, but these tools aren’t exactly used to shed or scrape the skin’s surface like an exfoliant. Rather, they work to lift, sculpt, and define by way of upward, slow motions. Unlike similar tools, this one features a flat shape with a curved end, which beautifully your angles tightly allowing you to apply more pressure to the skin and therefore give you more instant results. The best part is that, while estheticians and beauty experts may swear by them, you don’t have to book a pricey appointment to reap their benefits—there are plenty of high-quality options on the market that will do just the trick without breaking the bank. See below for some of our favorite models to try for yourself.

Hilary Duff’s New Ice Blonde Hair Took 8 Hours (!!) To Achieve

She’s back! Just a few months after going blue, Hilary Duff is back to blonde. But not just any blonde. This isn’t her Lizzie McGuire days or even the looks we see on Younger. This is a badass, just-gave-birth-and-feeling-hot blonde with extensions. Duff’s long platinum blonde hair just made an appearance on her Instagram and we heard straight from her colorist how it all came about. Hint: it took eight hours!

“We (Lisa Satron and I) used a Great Lengths combination of tape-in and individual keratin bonded extensions in 18″ and 20″ in for the perfect look,” said Nine Zero One co-founder and colorist Nikki Lee. “Great Lengths’ Tapes Plus adds that extra dose of perfection. We mixed the rooted and bronde tape-ins in the back of the head and individual keratin tip extensions in front and sides for the most moveable effortless look.”

Lee had to do two rounds of color remover before she could get her this blonde. She used Redken Shades EQ collection and her own formula. As for the actress, you can tell she loves her new look. “Have you noticed that I’m blonde…. and Rapunzeled??? @nikkilee901 you are hair fairy goddess and I thank you for going down all my hair-ventures with me. Especially for all the tender loving care you treat my hair with when you have to undo what I make you do,” she wrote on Instagram.

Duff’s hair is still in good shape thanks to a haircare line Lee co-founded with her business partner Riawna Capri. “It took eight hours to get the blue out of her hair, but her hair looks and feels amazing thanks to Crystal Cashmere. We rooted her out and left a bright piece right in front,” said Lee.

The at-home treatment helps repair damage done to strands and leaves them feeling soft and frizz-free. That way you can go blonde to blue and black to blonde just like Duff.

Angry About Your Divorce After 50? Here’s What to Do

Divorce After 50

As you recover from your divorce and move on, there is one all-too-common emotion that causes way more headaches than you need. Anger. Being ticked off. The persistent rage that will not leave you but could jeopardize your future relationships.

Anger Is a Thief in Divorce After 50

You worked really hard to obtain and keep the things that give you joy and comfort in life.

You probably keep your house or apartment nice and cosy, and you likely have homeowner’s insurance to protect it in case something happens to it. Your beloved heirlooms and the mementos you treasure are probably tucked away with the greatest of love and care.

You wouldn’t leave your door unlocked and invite a thief in to destroy the things you treasure, would you?

Of course not!

So, why on earth are you leaving the door to your life and happiness open to anger on a daily basis? Just as a thief will break into your home, wreck it, and take away everything that is dear to you, so will anger.

It’s time to lock the door and install one of those baller home security systems. It is time to protect one of the most precious things that anger will rob you of: your happiness and chance to heal.

Don’t Let Anger Get a Hold of You

Anger is other people’s stupid stuff trying to control you. Why let it?

When you are ticked off at something, your body is all too happy to let you know it. Your blood pressure, breathing and heart rate increase because your adrenal glands are being set into “fight or flight” mode.

This physiological reaction may have served Neanderthals when it was time to fight off whatever prehistoric beast threatened their survival, but that same anger disrupts your calm. Why let it control you like that?

The fact that your ex didn’t treat you right, the fact that the marriage is ending or has ended, and the fact that the ex and their lawyers may still be disrupting your peace of mind is just a simple fact. None of those are indicators of how you are obligated to react as a result.

Do you remember the delightful Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow? He put it too well:

“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.”

Your attitude about the problem is your anger. The stupid stuff that you are reacting to doesn’t have to disrupt your peace of mind.

How you choose to react to the problem – in this case, the facts – is what makes the difference between navigating this process with less drama and stress for yourself, or letting all the madness drag you down and leave you exhausted.

You’re better than getting pissed off at something that you cannot control. It’s time to focus on the things you actually can control.

If It Does Not Serve You, Let It Go

Some years ago, I was sweating my butt off in a hot yoga class. I was frustrated that I could not get into a backbend because my arthritis decided it didn’t want to play nice. My stomach was churning because of the third argument I had had with my boss that week.

On top of that, my heart was sinking because a man who I had been seeing and who I really liked had called the night before to break up with me. I was a knot of rage that afternoon in yoga class.

“If it does not serve you, then let it go,” the instructor said.

Although the yoga teacher probably meant for the students to be kind and patient with themselves, reassuring them the back bend would happen when the body was ready for it, those words stuck. And I remember bursting into tears.

Not because I wasn’t flexible enough during that moment in time. Simply put, I was letting the fact that I was inflexible in life cloud my ability to just be and move on.

We have to understand that if a negative emotion is not going to improve our lives, we need to show it the door. There is no place for anger holding us hostage.

Anger Has No Place in Your Life

The next time you start to feel pissed off about the divorce drama, do the following:

  • When your pulse starts to quicken, take a step back.
  • Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.
  • Remember that whatever BS is coming your way does not have power to piss you off.
  • Remember that if the anger is not contributing to your well-being, then breathe that negativity out.
  • Inhale in the fresh air and focus on the beautiful life and calm that will be your guide.
  • Carry on, because you have way too many awesome things going on to waste your precious emotional energy on anything toxic.

What struggles do you experience when it comes to dealing with divorce anger? What steps have you taken to kick it to the curb? What do you think are the keys to getting through a divorce after 50? Please share the strategies that have worked for you!

Paige DeSorbo’s Plumping Lip Gloss on Instastories

Summer House Instagram Beauty 2021

In case you missed it, beauty guru Paige DeSorbo took to Instastories the other day to be the guinea pig for us for the Too Faced “Lip Injection Maximum Plump” gloss, the brand’s most intense lip-plumping product yet. And after seeing her insanely good results, well needless to say we can’t see ourselves coming near a needle anytime soon (other than the COVID vaccine of course 💉).

Fashionably,

Faryn

Note: Paige applied two coats of the gloss. She mentioned that it does sting after application however she would still 10/10 recommend.

Age Well by Leaping into the Breach after 60

into the breach

“Once more into the breach my friends…”

Shakespeare lovers will recognize these immortal lines from Henry V, as the king exhorts his men to once again brave the French spears and troops which outnumber them.

The Battle of Agincourt, which gave the British control of Normandy and made Henry heir to the French crown was not only pivotal in war history, but Shakespeare’s telling of the tale gave us some of the best lines in all of great literature.

What on earth does this have to do with life after 60?

Stay with me here.

This morning, in response to an article I had written on how so many of us speak of our sacred selves as elderly, I got this comment from one woman that made my day:

In just 11 days my husband and I, along with two dogs and a cat, make a permanent move to Central America. Our goal is to live this chapter of our lives in harmony with nature and the local islanders. We will have 400 sq ft of living space until we are ready to undertake repurposing an existing structure that will be not much larger. We intend to live pretty much off-grid and as simply as we can. This project will be the most physical one of our lives and we anticipate it with nearly every emotion on the spectrum.

Oh, How I Would Love to Sneak into Her Luggage!

Sixty and Me published an article a short while back about living as an ex-pat. These folks are poised to do just that, having made this enormous decision to live on their terms, “off the grid.” Suffice it to say they have done their research and know what they’re getting into as best they can.

The rest? That’s up to the gods, if you will.

How Will You Live Late in Life?

The breach, in this context, is life itself.

The “breach,” the way I see it, is an invitation to take on what time we have and fill it with the kind of adventure which enlivens us, makes us youthful again because of the nature of the challenge.

The couple moving to Honduras is doing precisely what I have considered, and may yet still do, albeit my choice is elsewhere. I am still building out a new home in Eugene, and that was plenty enough adventure this past year.

The beauty of it is that the challenges involved with setting up and managing a big new home with plenty of deferred maintenance has kept me fully engaged and delighted, especially as my yard explodes with blooms and birds and breezes. Will I be here forever? Who knows? Another breach may open and invite me to leap in.

The couple moving to Honduras has signed up for hard physical labor at a time when their bodies will probably benefit the most. Not only is such hard work deeply gratifying, it’s also humbling for two reasons. First, that hard work will sculpt them into strong elders, confident of their balance and strength.

Will they injure? You betcha. At 68 I injure all the time because I am pushing myself all the time. AND I heal like a teenager and bounce back because I work hard and eat well, which this couple will most certainly be doing. That is a setup for success.

They have a plan, a purpose, and they are days away from leaping off the proverbial cliff. Oh, how delighted I am for them both.

The Real Battle

The Battle of Agincourt for all of us is the Battle of Aging. It’s the one we will ultimately lose, for we must. However, the skirmishes we encounter along the way allow us to celebrate those small but terribly significant wins which result in quality of life.

Nature will take us, but she doesn’t have to rob us of joy, adventure, deep satisfaction and the gratitude that you and I can feel when we wake up to yet another day. Our battle is to fight aging stereotypes, be willing to leap into life on our own terms, and fly our own flags of a life well-lived.

You don’t have to move to Honduras and live off-grid for that. Not at all. But when you and I choose life, when we are willing to do the work to be healthy, eat well, move much and reach out to friends, we are far more likely to feel heroic every single day.

To that I will end with another great quote from Henry V, which is an even greater truism today:

“Self-love, my liege, is not so vile a sin, as self-neglecting.” – Dauphin

Every single day offers us a chance to go “Once more into the breach.” Right now, my breach is at the gym, where I train to fight another day.

What do you do to add a touch of adventure to your day? Do you have great plans for your later years? How do you build the courage to take risks?
