A double masked Cameran Eubanks—possibly hoping to make up for the Bravolebs who won’t even wear one— took to Instagram to show off her new book One Day You’ll Thank Me to her followers. Since the book is now an Amazon #1 best-seller, she’s probably feeling the need to thank them right back. And though I don’t require a thank you, I have a feeling you might want to after scooping up the affordable, classic jeans she’s rocking in the photo shortly after you buy her book.

Do You Have “Enjoy Life” on Your Checklist?

financial checklist

Checklists are more powerful than you might think. Research is definitely convincing on the merits of using checklists. They help you focus and accomplish goals, one small task at a time.

They train your brain to be more productive which also gives you more time in your day. And they assure fewer “fire drills” in your life. Count me in!

This Is Not a Drill!

Yet, as with many things in life, there can be a fine line between using and over-using checklists. A friend of mine from church is a lot like me and uses checklists for work, personal appointments, and her volunteer assignments.

Her husband must’ve thought she was being a bit excessive when one day he leaned over her shoulder to look at one of her checklists and ask, “Do you have ENJOY LIFE on your checklist?”

When she told me that, we both laughed, but then I haven’t forgotten that story either. My husband too can be the one who brings me back to earth with a reminder (not always a gentle reminder) to stop and smell the roses. They say opposites attract, and I find us healthier together because of it.

Me, Myself, and I

But what about when you don’t have that significant other anymore? That someone who can help you remember to be balanced in your life? Or who can make you laugh when you are taking life too seriously?

Many women have found themselves suddenly single (or perhaps by choice) and that can mean everything is now up to me, myself, and I. Then what?

The Power of Friendship

February, often known as the month of love, can be an especially painful reminder if you are now single. I like the concept of Galentine’s Day (grab your gal friends and do something fun together) as a way to put a positive spin for singles on the traditional Valentine’s Day.

Holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays can all be hard times, especially the first few years after a loss. Plus, having some girlfriends around can definitely help you enjoy life more during these times.

“Whether You Think You Can, or You Think You Can’t…”

A key factor for enjoying life is to remember, we are our thoughts. I’m taking a Positive Intelligence course right now and finding it fascinating.

I want to find ways to help women turn what feels like bad situations, like becoming suddenly single, into a focus on looking forward in search of gifts and opportunities instead. It’s important to me that I help people move the whole money conversation from the “taboo list” to the “money is just another tool in my toolbox” list.

Throughout the course, I am constantly reminded that whatever you think your life is, it is. Whether you believe there will be a positive outcome or a negative outcome, you are right. It sounds so easy yet is so hard, but it is all about what we choose to think.

Check(list) It Out!

So, from my Positive Intelligence learnings, I have identified a very short checklist for you to consider trying in order to experience financial peace.

#1 Visualize regularly how you want to feel mentally and physically. See yourself smiling and enjoying less financial stress.

#2 Create an inventory of the tools in your toolbox; a financial inventory.

#3 Connect with other women on the same journey.

In Plain Sight

First, visualizing can have amazing power. A famous experiment compared boys who wanted to improve their free throw percentage for basketball. One group did nothing extra, one group spent extra time practicing free throws, and one group just visualized themselves with improved free throw percentages with no extra practice time.

There was no change in results for the nothing extra group – compared to a 23% increase in free throw percentages for both the extra practice group and the visualization only group!

Creating a Financial Checklist

Second, creating a financial inventory is where the power of a checklist can be helpful. You can find several net worth or personal financial statement samples to use online or consider using My Financial Blueprint to create a list of assets that also doubles as your estate planning checklist.

Being able to see all of your money tools in one place is the best foundation for making wise financial decisions going forward.

Girl Power!

Finally, connecting with other women is part of the accountability aspect of my three-step checklist challenge for you. I offer monthly virtual workshops, for example.

Or checkout a Facebook (Modern Widows Club) group, a local MeetUp group, or various church groups offered across the United States like DivorceCare or GriefShare for in-person connections. Having an external, supportive accountability group can improve your goal attainment by 500%!

Enjoy the Process

By using this checklist format, you can break things down to more doable chunks, create healthier habits, and make it easier to take the emotion out of it.

Money decisions are often an emotional trigger, usually due to childhood and past relationships. So, to help reduce the “fire drills” in your life, try to enjoy the process by creating your own checklist. You’ll be well on your way to enjoying less worry and more life!

How do you use checklists? Do you try to include “enjoy life” entries in your checklists? Can you share any tips for other women to enjoy financial peace? Please join in the discussion!

2021, The Year of the Older Woman: How to Find Your Sense of Self in Makeup and Style (VIDEO)

sense of self

One of the greatest hindrances to older women consciously and courageously finding their Sense of Self is the notion that we are somehow incomplete for the task. That our untapped self-ness is underscored with not-enoughness – proven through a long list of reasons why uncovering that Sense is socially unacceptable and potentially dangerous.

Perhaps we haven’t enough of something considered crucial: money, age, confidence, time, health, purpose. Rising up out of this limited and small thinking takes one simple act. It is a choice.

I believe 2021 is the Year of the Older Woman. (Thank you, Margaret Manning, for coming up with this phrase!)

I believe many of you in 2021 will find your power and voice, and it will express itself in many wonderful and creative ways. What do I mean by this, what does it look like, and why should you listen to me – a makeup artist?

Nothing Is More Dulling of Possibility Than Conformity

Respectability impedes growth, and conformity keeps you in a box. I grew up on a farm where my eccentricity, creativity, and compulsion to be alone, talking to myself or re-reading Charlotte’s Web for the 25th time, brought correction and concern from my overtaxed parents. Many of you relate to this.

I wanted to be normal, respectable, likeable, funny, and not odd. It has taken half a lifetime to not only accept who I am, but also to live in alignment with my inner compass. As an artist, I make women up, every day. So many of them step in front of the camera, and I see their fear.

They fear judgement. Judgement for being not pretty enough, slim enough, smart enough. I get it. Yet, the women I most admire are the ones who discover their style and voice and own it. It is about uncovering what you already are, rather than putting on something you are not.

It’s stepping out and making a statement in whatever way feels right for your own Sense of Self. When stepping out affects your career and relationships, the cost and benefits are visible, yet personal power cannot be negated in either importance or validity.

You don’t have to be an eccentric, but in truth, what you believe about yourself comes out in what you wear and how you present yourself.

“When You Don’t Dress Like Everyone Else, You Don’t Have to Think Like Everyone Else” —Iris Apfel

As an artist, this lesson has been underscored by watching other artists. Iris Apfel is an American businesswoman, interior designer, and fashion icon.

She’s the one with the memorable round, black framed eyeglasses, crazy clothing, and enormous jewelry who designed some of the White House interiors for nine presidents and signed a modeling contract with IMG at age 97.

I adore her. Along the way in her life, she figured out her sense of style, taste, and fashion, and stuck with it. She wears bright red lipstick and maybe mascara, but that’s it, and she’s an icon.

Helen Mirren, the famous British actress, at age 75, could look sexy in a paper bag. She owns it; her colorful and figure-enhancing style with dark eyeliner and bright lipstick.

Or consider one of my favorite British actresses, Dame Judy Dench. At age 86, she is as stunning and relatable as ever, saying in one article, “I’m tired of being told I’m too old to try something. I should be able to decide for myself if I can’t do things and not have someone tell me I’ll forget my lines or I’ll trip and fall on the set.”

These women are examples of tenacity and moxie in not only their professional lives, but in their beauty and fashion taste. They own their age, creativity, and personal style, they are beacons of individual expression.

“There Is No Roadmap to Style. It’s About Self-Expression and, Above All, Attitude” —Iris Apfel

In the late 1980s, I moved to London, England, from Paris, France, to study Literature. I’d been working as a professional model in Paris for two years and couldn’t take it anymore – the starvation dieting, the constant ‘not-enough-ness’ messaging of the fashion world.

London proved to be exhilarating. Coloring my hair bright red in defiance of my agent, I disco-danced in the crazy big hair, sharp shoulders, and overdone makeup of the era.

Fast forward to now living in Colorado, where LuLu Lemon yoga pants reign supreme, I look like a baked nob. Black leather jacket, heels, skirt just a smidge too tight, and eyeliner.

I’m not exactly the epitome of an outdoor girl. However, if I wear it with an attitude of playful fun, and older woman finesse, people don’t judge, they are inspired.

Iris Apfel also said, “People with a lot of money don’t dress as well as people who have to make do, who have to be inventive.”

Ageing is wonderful. You can give yourself permission to be anything you want, and then change your mind and try something else. My encouragement here is to live each day with an open-minded enthusiasm to be your highest and best Self possible. Whatever look or trait you own is what makes you magnetic. Nothing else.

What makes you come alive? What color brings you to life? If you weren’t afraid of judgment, how would you present yourself? What gives you the most powerful Sense of Self?

Bachelorette Clare Just Dyed Her Hair Pink After Her Cheating Scandal With Dale

The pink hair trend of quarantine continues. Just a month after former “Bachelorette” Clare Crawley ended her relationship with Dale Moss, she’s debuted a new look—pink hair! “I’ve been wanting to have some fun and (temporarily) change up my hair for some time now with a fun color, so I did it!!” she wrote on Instagram. Of course, it didn’t come without a little sponsored content. Crawley is a hairstylist after all, so she knows hair. She’s recommending a color-depositing shampoo and conditioner that she promises won’t damage your strands.

“This is what I’ve recommended to my clients because they are just temporary, so you can see what different colors you like without damaging your hair!” she writes. “The best part is you can do it at home yourself!” Crawley is promoting the brand Celeb Luxury, which is a line we haven’t tried ourselves. The star promises it’s free of parabens, mineral oil and “harsh chemicals.” The line is plant-based and cruelty-free.

Crawley used the Colorditioner in Pastel light pink ($35 at Celeb Luxury), but is recommending all the low-key shades to switch up your look—maybe even after a breakup. It’s one of the best ways to keep yourself a little boost without long-lasting repercussions. We can’t recommend a major chop right now (except maybe some curtain bangs?) but joining the pink hair club is always a good idea, breakup or not.

A shade like light pink will wash out before you even delete his number from your phone. But then it’s probably time to try another color.
