ColourPop’s “Mulan” Collection Will Bring Honor to Us All

Let’s get down to business. We’ve been waiting for the ColourPop Mulan collection for what feels like forever. (The song is stuck in your head now, right? Sorry about that.) Disney’s Mulan live-action feature film was supposed to come out March 27 but the release has been pushed back due to Coronavirus. In the meantime, you can get your Mulan fix with ColourPop’s red-and-gold collection. According to the brand, this has been the top requested Disney collaboration by ColourPop fans. And now, it’s almost here.

Like with other ColourPop collaborations, including the Sailor Moon collection, each of the products is inspired by the iconic film. You’ll find an eyeshadow palette with a mix of matte, metallic and foil finishes; neutral blushes, soft and bold lipsticks and lip glosses; and new skincare goodies from Fourth Ray Beauty. Everything retails for $25 and under and there will be bundles, sets, the full-collection and a PR box. The big kits usually go first, so check back here March 19 at 10am PST to make sure you get what you want before it’s gone for good.

3 Critical Steps to Overcoming Emotional Eating After 60

Emotional-Eating-After-60

I think we would all agree that eating well is key to health and a healthy weight. But getting to the eating well part isn’t just about the food. If it were, we would have far fewer overweight people today.

Two-thirds of American adults are overweight, and half of them fall into the obese category. Numbers are climbing globally as well. How can that be turned around so that two-thirds of adults are at their ideal weight? It’s complicated, but it’s entirely possible.

Is Your Weight Connected to Your Emotions?

Emotions factor into eating in very deep ways. If you go way back, you may remember how a parent or well-meaning adult put a lollipop in your mouth after your fell off your tricycle and skinned your knee, when what you really needed was a hug and reassurance that you’d be okay.

You may also remember getting a treat for good grades, or a grandmother saying, “Eat, eat, eat – I baked all day for you!” These experiences planted the seeds that link emotions to food, unconscious ideas that food is comfort, food is love, and even food is avoidance of feelings.

A client of mine is caregiving some family members. She gained a lot of weight because she ‘rewarded’ herself with huge amounts of junk food when she really needed a hug and a show of appreciation. She felt trapped and food was her comfort.

Food is so available today that it is easy to fall into patterns of eating when we are not hungry. It takes awareness, emotional balance and a conscious effort to limit access to food when it is not meal time.

3 Critical Steps for Overcoming Emotional Eating

It’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of emotional eating, but there are steps you can follow to avoid this practice.

Step 1: Know Your Body

The first step is to get in touch with your physical body. It’s very important to start recognizing the true physical feeling of hunger.

You need to know what hunger feels like so you can eat when you are hungry and pass up food when you are not.

Step 2: Know Your Feelings

The second step takes work. You need to know how you feel about things. If you have been an emotional eater for a long time, you have been anesthetizing yourself with food. When you do that, it is very easy to get out of touch with your authentic emotions. You zone out.

So, the next time something upsets you, check in with yourself. Do you feel angry? Hurt? Disappointed? Lonely? When you connect with that feeling, you will have a chance to resolve it in a way that doesn’t involve food.

Step 3: Regular Eating Habits

The third step is to make sure you eat meals every day. Your biological functions require energy, and when you don’t give your body energy by eating quality food, your brain, hormones and blood sugar take over and create cravings for just about anything in sight.

It’s Really About Love

We can blame it on food, or blame it on the scale, or blame it on the things or the people who upset us.

But to have a healthy relationship with food, we need to take care of our emotions and remind ourselves that we are lovable human beings. With that acknowledgement, learning to eat for the right reasons becomes much easier.

My client who had been eating junk food as a reward for caregiving is doing something different now. She spoke with her family and said she’s happy to help them, but she is putting some boundaries around the time that she gives them.

She now has time to socialize with friends at least once weekly. And per my instructions, she gives herself a big hug every day and appreciates herself for getting more balance in her life. In doing this, the junk food that once soothed her is no longer needed.

When you learn to say “No” to things that are too much for you, you are saying “Yes, I love you” to yourself.

Have you had experiences with emotional eating? Can you see a link to your younger self and how emotions were handled early on? Do you come from a food is love culture? Please join the conversation and share your thoughts.

Nail Your At-Home Mani With These Pro Tips

Nail salons are shut down for the foreseeable future and you’re not going anywhere non-essential. While a manicure isn’t the most important thing, a little self-care can go a long way when you’re stuck inside. But if you’re not used to painting your own nails at home, you might be wondering where to start. We went right to the source to find out. Sarah Gibson Tuttle, Founder and CEO of Olive & June, gave us the rundown on three simple manicures you can easily DIY—we promise. Grab your supplies and get ready to learn how to create one-color nails, a half-moon mani and nail art sticker designs.

Go grab your supplies and turn on Netflix (that’s just for the background noise, of course). Every one of these manicures will start with the same three steps. First, you’ll want to shape and file your nails. “It’s all about the 90/10 rule,” explains Gibson Tuttle. “90 percent of your shape comes from your nail clipper. 10 percent from filing.” Cut your nails into the desired shape and then smooth out the edges. Next, you’ll want to swipe nail polish remover onto each nail to remove excess oils. Or, if you’re using Olive & June’s Nail Polish Remover Pot ($8 at Olive & June), dip each nail inside. “Once you’ve prepped your nails, avoid touching your face and hair which have natural oils,” adds Gibson Tuttle.

Finally, you’ll want to trim any hangnails and buff your cuticles. (Don’t remove them!) “Using your buffer, gently glide the buffer cube back and forth along the edge of the cuticle to erase dry skin and smooth things out,” says Gibson Tuttle. Now, your nails are ready to be painted.

Traditional One-Coat Color

Apply your first coat of polishOnce dry (give it a few minutes!), add a second coat of polish. Clean up any stray polish using a Q-tip or Olive & June’s Clean Up Brush ($8 at Olive & June) dipped in nail polish remover. Once dry, finish with a top coat to add shine and polish protection. “Once your top coat has fully dried, apply cuticle serum to make your mani shine,” says Gibson Tuttle. Her biggest mani trick is to apply a top coat every three days to extend the life of your polish. It “acts as a layer of defense against everything your hands are interacting with,” she adds. She also recommends applying the cuticle serum every day to “hydrate the skin around your nails and cuticles.”

Half-Moon Manicure

After you’ve prepped your nails, create the shape of a half-moon with the nail polish color of your choice. Let it dry and repeat. Shown here is Olive & June 7-Free Nail Polish in JLR ($8 at Olive & June). You can free-hand it and then clean up the line with the brush and nail polish remover, or you can grab round stickers, such as Avery White Self-Adhesive Reinforcement Labels ($3.79 at Amazon) to use as a guide. Finish with a top coat.

Simple Flowers

Prep nails and then apply clear nail polish to each nail. Wait until it dries. Grab two nail polish shades, such as Olive & June’s JM Nail Polish ($8 at Olive and June) and JLR again. Dip a toothpick into the shade that will be the middle of the flower (such as JLR) and randomly apply 2-3 dots to as many nails as you’d like. Then, use the second color (here, JM) to dot around each to make the petals. Or, if you’re feeling a little less creative, you can apply some flower nail art stickers, such as Olive & June Nail Stickers in Everyday Bouquet ($7.59 at Target). Just pop a top coat on top.

You’re basically a pro now but if you want to watch Gibson Tuttle show off her tips IRL, the brand is doing a Mani Bootcamp on Instagram every day at 3pm PST from March 22 to April 11. If you need more supplies to get you started, Olive & June is offering free, expedited shipping with code BOOTCAMP.
