Lindsay Hubbard’s Leaf Print Pajamas

Lindsay Hubbard’s Leaf Print Pajamas on Summer House

Season 4 Episode 7 Summer House Fashion

Lindsay Hubbard’s pink printed pajamas during the girls’ PJ party on last night’s episode Summer House were super cute (and fyi are still up for grabs so hurry!). And considering the very lovely pajamas I’ve been wearing to bed 24/7 lately, needless to say seeing Lindsay in this set is very much inspiring me to turn over a new leaf.

Fashionably,

Faryn

Nail Your At-Home Mani With These Pro Tips

Nail salons are shut down for the foreseeable future and you’re not going anywhere non-essential. While a manicure isn’t the most important thing, a little self-care can go a long way when you’re stuck inside. But if you’re not used to painting your own nails at home, you might be wondering where to start. We went right to the source to find out. Sarah Gibson Tuttle, Founder and CEO of Olive & June, gave us the rundown on three simple manicures you can easily DIY—we promise. Grab your supplies and get ready to learn how to create one-color nails, a half-moon mani and nail art sticker designs.

Go grab your supplies and turn on Netflix (that’s just for the background noise, of course). Every one of these manicures will start with the same three steps. First, you’ll want to shape and file your nails. “It’s all about the 90/10 rule,” explains Gibson Tuttle. “90 percent of your shape comes from your nail clipper. 10 percent from filing.” Cut your nails into the desired shape and then smooth out the edges. Next, you’ll want to swipe nail polish remover onto each nail to remove excess oils. Or, if you’re using Olive & June’s Nail Polish Remover Pot ($8 at Olive & June), dip each nail inside. “Once you’ve prepped your nails, avoid touching your face and hair which have natural oils,” adds Gibson Tuttle.

Finally, you’ll want to trim any hangnails and buff your cuticles. (Don’t remove them!) “Using your buffer, gently glide the buffer cube back and forth along the edge of the cuticle to erase dry skin and smooth things out,” says Gibson Tuttle. Now, your nails are ready to be painted.

Traditional One-Coat Color

Apply your first coat of polishOnce dry (give it a few minutes!), add a second coat of polish. Clean up any stray polish using a Q-tip or Olive & June’s Clean Up Brush ($8 at Olive & June) dipped in nail polish remover. Once dry, finish with a top coat to add shine and polish protection. “Once your top coat has fully dried, apply cuticle serum to make your mani shine,” says Gibson Tuttle. Her biggest mani trick is to apply a top coat every three days to extend the life of your polish. It “acts as a layer of defense against everything your hands are interacting with,” she adds. She also recommends applying the cuticle serum every day to “hydrate the skin around your nails and cuticles.”

Half-Moon Manicure

After you’ve prepped your nails, create the shape of a half-moon with the nail polish color of your choice. Let it dry and repeat. Shown here is Olive & June 7-Free Nail Polish in JLR ($8 at Olive & June). You can free-hand it and then clean up the line with the brush and nail polish remover, or you can grab round stickers, such as Avery White Self-Adhesive Reinforcement Labels ($3.79 at Amazon) to use as a guide. Finish with a top coat.

Simple Flowers

Prep nails and then apply clear nail polish to each nail. Wait until it dries. Grab two nail polish shades, such as Olive & June’s JM Nail Polish ($8 at Olive and June) and JLR again. Dip a toothpick into the shade that will be the middle of the flower (such as JLR) and randomly apply 2-3 dots to as many nails as you’d like. Then, use the second color (here, JM) to dot around each to make the petals. Or, if you’re feeling a little less creative, you can apply some flower nail art stickers, such as Olive & June Nail Stickers in Everyday Bouquet ($7.59 at Target). Just pop a top coat on top.

You’re basically a pro now but if you want to watch Gibson Tuttle show off her tips IRL, the brand is doing a Mani Bootcamp on Instagram every day at 3pm PST from March 22 to April 11. If you need more supplies to get you started, Olive & June is offering free, expedited shipping with code BOOTCAMP.

The Best Drugstore Stick Foundations For Flawless Coverage on a Budget

Liquid and cream formulas tend to be the go-to choice when it comes to foundation (especially for those of us looking for a little bit of extra coverage), but because they’re often bottled with glass (i.e. prone to shattering) and tend to be messier to apply, they’re not exactly the best fit for the low maintenance makeup types—not to mention traveling. Cream compacts are a great alternative that are a bit more on-the-go friendly, but they also tend to be heavier in consistency, oftentimes leaving you with a cakey finish—especially if you’re prone to getting shiny throughout the day.

Fortunately, affordable stick foundations are here to save day, offering the best of both worlds saving you serious time and offering the utmost convenience. There are plenty of different varieties of stick foundations, from matte and oil-controlling to Dewey and luminous, along with a wide range of coverage levels.

Whether you’re just not down for a fussy makeup routine or are a bona fide jetsetter that simply cannot be troubled by the mess and time required (…or if you’re like me and *safely* do your entire makeup routine in the car while stuck in traffic on the way to the office every day) by traditional foundations, there’s a stick foundation for just about anyone.

5 Gratitude Practices to Help You Get Through Tough Times

Senior woman being grateful

I’m struggling with a bit of low grade depression these days. A combination of everything that’s going on in the world, a friendship that ended, some good old-fashioned family drama, a sense of feeling misunderstood have all contributed.

You know the drill. It’s the stuff of life. And to that end, we can all get a little down and have difficulty finding inspiration at times.

To feel sick at heart is no different than to feel sick in the body. We have to take the right medicine, to restore balance. The best medicine that I know of for heart-sickness is gratitude practice.

Gratitude practice is a way of opening the heart to appreciation and hopeful possibility. Over the years I have enjoyed the teachings of Brother David Steindl-Rast, who writes and lectures extensively about the path of being grateful. These ideas for practice come from his work. They are simple and profound.

Gratitude Practices: The Breath of Thanks

Taking full deep breaths slows everything down. Close your eyes and breath deeply ten times and with each exhale say to yourself “thank you.”

Notice that your shoulders will start to drop. Your heart rate slows. You can actually lower your blood pressure several points with deep, deliberate breathing. And isn’t “thank you” a beautiful prayer to whisper throughout the day?

Naming the Gift and Writing it Down

Because I am a writer, my office is filled with notebooks and yellow legal pads. When I write down what I am grateful for, it causes me to pause and feel into the gift that I’ve been given.

Start with three things. One of the things that I wrote down this morning: I am grateful for this drizzly weather. I appreciate how conducive it is to writing. Thank you for the gift of this grey, calming blanket of mist.

Name the gift and write it down. There is something about writing it down that commits the gift in a deeper way into the psyche, so don’t just do it in your head. Find a time to write down what you are grateful for.

Observation

After deep breathing, I let my eyes fall upon the things that surround me, whether inside of my house or outside in nature. I can always find something to appreciate. I let the object of that appreciation bring a smile to my lips.

My dog is curled up on the rug in my office. This fur baby looks at me with his big brown eyes in which there is never any judgment or assessment. Did you ever hear that funny phrase, “I hope to one day become the person my dog thinks I am?” Observing my dog and then feeling how grateful I am for him lifts my spirits.

Surprise

Observation leads to surprise. Sometimes when I get stuck, and feel like I’ve slammed up against a concrete wall, I practice the element of surprise.

For instance, I didn’t expect that small brown bird to sit right on my window sill and watch me wash the pots and pans. I can focus on what a wonder it is that such a small creature would sit outside my window, curious about me. What is it about a small bird that conjures such gentle tenderness? In the moment of such observation and wonderings, I have made myself more alive.

Awakening the Senses

“How can I give a full response to this present moment unless I am alert to its message?” (David Stendle-Rast) What are the activities that utilize our senses? Sitting on the back porch, allowing us to see, smell and feel the nature in our own back yard? Hot tea on a cold morning that awakens our taste buds and tickles our nose with its aroma?

For me, the thing that leads me to most appreciate my senses is a walk in the woods. Anything that places our attention on one or more of our senses is what makes up this practice. We can be grateful for our sight, our taste, our hearing. Today I am grateful for the sense of sight that allows me to type my post and see out the window of my office into the yard.

In an attempt to restore well-being and balance, I am more focused than usual on a deliberate gratitude practice. This is the healing balm that never fails to turn things around for me.

Part of my practice today was to write this post, and you know what? It helped me. It helped me to acknowledge to myself that life isn’t always perfect, fair or kind and yet I can always find a way to open my hearts with the practice of gratitude.

I am grateful to be able to share all of the things that delight and challenge me with my readers at Sixty and Me. Thank you for being a part of my gratitude practice and my life.

How do you practice gratitude in your life? How do experience gratitude through your senses? What practices bring you the greatest sense of delight? What are your favorite gratitude practices? Please join in the conversation.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Got “Love Lights” Highlights and I’m Obsessed

Just yesterday it felt like everyone was chopping their hair into a blunt bob. Now, it’s all about changing up your hair color, it seems. The newest “it” shade is a pretty mix of brown and blonde hair (or bronde), as evident by Jennifer Love Hewitt’s highlights. The actress showed off her new look in an Instagram video, where she gushed over the lighter color and slightly shorter length. She stars as Maddie Buckley on the drama 911 and the show is currently on hiatus.

“OK guys, I just finished season 3 of 911 and it was time for a non-Maddie change,” she says. “So here I am fresh and ready for spring and summer break and I’ll be back to Maddie again but now, thank you Nikki so much. I couldn’t feel lighter and more like sunshine and I just love it, thank you so much. I really hope you guys like it and I think we’re calling these ‘love lights’, right?”

Hewitt’s gorgeous bronde hue is courtesy of Nine Zero One co-founder Nikki Lee. The colorist posted the ‘do on Instagram as well, calling out the “love lights.”

Lee gave her client golden blonde highlights around her face and softly throughout her brunette hair. It catches the light and brightens up her entire face.

Hewitt also went a bit shorter to a mid-length cut that feels fresh and new. It’s not as short as say, Michelle Phan’s new bob or Liza Koshy’s one-length lob. But the shorter, slightly layered cut shows off the pretty highlights, or, love lights really well. Here’s to brighter hair for spring—when we finally get back outside, that is.
