A Nursing Perspective: 38 Years Later

nurses

National Nurse’s Week in the US is May 6th to May 12th. The week honors Florence Nightingale’s birthday which is on May 12th. Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing. It’s been 38 years since I graduated from Nursing School at Vanier College Nursing School in Montreal, Quebec. My undergraduate degree was in Health Administration and Journalism.

I took three years off to work as a dental hygienist only to acknowledge my fascination with the medical field. I applied for and was accepted into a three-year RN degree and enjoyed every moment of the program, which seemed to go too quickly.

My Life’s Turning Point

As the eldest student in my graduating class, I was asked to be the Class Valedictorian at graduation. While hesitant at first, it turns out that moment was a huge turning point in my life. As a shy girl in her early 20s, I realized I had an innate comfort with public speaking. My family listening in the audience sat in awe of my message and charisma.

Looking back, I realize the experience highlighted my power as a leader. The experience gave me confidence and the belief that with intention we can accomplish whatever we want to accomplish. Less than one year after graduation, I was offered a position as Director of Nursing of a Chronic Care Hospital. I held the position until I was summoned to bed rest with my first daughter.

After my children grew up, I yearned for more schooling, and received my MFA in Writing and years later, my PhD in Psychology. Yes. I am an education junkie, but during all my schooling I have always harbored a love for writing and leadership. Now, as both a writer and a teacher, I empower people with my words.

I recently shared my Valedictorian Speech with my niece, who was inspired by my life as a nurse and now has a high-ranking nursing position in obstetrics and gynecology. We agreed that not much has changed in the nursing world in the past four decades, except that nurses are given more and more responsibilities.

After she read my speech, she said that my message resonated and continued to linger with her in her own practice. What else can a sexagenarian baby boomer writer ask for?

My Speech, Still True Today

We are glad that you could come to share this special day with us. And those of you who have come from out of town, we especially thank you for putting the time aside to share this day.

I would like to begin my introductory remarks by reading a poem I read recently:

The slightest word of comfort

To help us on our way,

The slightest smile from someone

To brighten up our day;

The slightest act of kindness

To lessen care and such—

These all cost so very little,

But they mean so very much.

It’s wonderful when someone

Needs from you a helping hand,

And thanks you with a grateful heart

because you understand;

It’s wonderful when folk are glad

because they know you’re near,

That in the world because of you,

the star of hope shines clear.

—Francis Gay

Today, the role of a nurse is becoming a more and more responsible one. The role of a nurse will always be thought of as putting the hope back in a sick person’s life. She is slowly going to be a major diagnostician and careplanner in the patient’s care. It is often that the doctor asks the nurse what the best treatment may be, as she has the most contact with the patient and is most sensitive to his or her needs.

Our three-year nursing program has prepared us for this day of increasing responsibility. It is finally the day we can do our nursing procedures without being hovered over by our nursing professors, and the day that we wouldn’t have to stay up until 2:00 am writing exhausting descriptions of the nursing process. Today is the day that we finally take the responsibility for our own actions: when we can no longer say, “That’s what my instructor told me to do,” but, rather, the line becomes, “That’s what I feel should be done.”

As I look around me at my fellow students, I see how we have all grown. I see how we have all developed skills of communication, teaching, observation, and assessment. We have grown to understand the importance of the love for humanity, and, consequently, the importance of empathy in the nursing profession. We have learned that the nurse must be able to adapt to change. She must be receptive to new learning skills to improve her patient care. Learning will not stop now that our formal training comes to a close. The nurse must realize that no question is a stupid question. Throughout our training, we were given increasing amounts of responsibility. In our third and final year, we were given the chance to be in charge of a busy hospital ward with our fellow students. By the end of our training, we assessed the patient, made the diagnosis, and followed through on the appropriate nursing intervention based on our knowledge.

I am going to miss being a nursing student, and especially will miss my fellow colleagues who have grown with me. We have been through a lot together. I am sure that many will remember with me, the day it that took ten minutes to correctly make a hospital bed or the time when having a patient with an intravenous was the most mysterious thing. Or when we gave our first IM injection into an orange, or when we had to write our charting notes on a separate piece of paper and show the instructor before writing in the patient’s chart. Or what about all those communications records between patient and student: when we had to dash out of the room to quickly write down what the patient said so we could complete our assignment. In the years to come, we may not always find it easy. But there is one thing we must always keep in mind: that is, we must always be conscious of our importance in the healing process. And last but not least, we must be proud to be nurses.

I would like to finish by reading a poem:

Life is like a garden

in many little ways;

Contentment cannot flourish

if gloom is all you raise.

Plant the seed of kindness

wherever you may go,

and fertilized by common sense,

friendship’s bound to grow.

—Anonymous

Thank you again, and please join us in the front of the auditorium for refreshments.

Here’s to Being a Nurse

Looking back on my early days as a nurse, I realize how much becoming a nurse had changed my life. Even though I no longer practice, it’s been said that once a nurse always a nurse. My nursing education has provided me with a great deal of useful information. It has also informed my writing about healing, health and transformation.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

Do you remember a nurse who took special care of you or a loved one? What do you think would be hospital care like without nurses? How can we honor nurses during the National Nurse’s Week?

Dolores Catania’s Braided Jeans at Lunch with Frank

Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 13 Episode 13 Fashion

Dolores Catania looked darling showing up to meet Frank. She wore a pair of braided flare jeans paired with a white wrap crop top and nailed a simple chic look. I think it’s really cool that Dolores and Frank have kept a relationship since separating. Sometimes you have to go your separate ways for something to work out. But sometimes things are better together like this top and pants combo. Just kidding, they would be just as great worn apart as they are together. Which is why you need to grab a helmet and take a ride down to shop the look below. 🏍

Sincerely Stylish,

This $12 Firming Neck Cream Has the Most Legendary Before & After Photos From Reviewers

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

I recently saw a TikTok that showcased what can happen when you skip SPF applications on your neck—and it wasn’t pretty. The person in the video had a face that looked smooth while the neck appeared decades older (no joke.) But it’s no secret the delicate area shouldn’t be overlooked since it’s one of the first places to show signs of age. If you already missed the mark on preventive care for premature wrinkles, I’m happy to share all hope may not in fact be lost.

Gold Bond’s Neck & Chest Firming Cream is one of Amazon’s not to be missed drugstore staples (it has over 7,400 perfect ratings.) The formula may as well be rebranded a time machine in a bottle since it has some of the wildest before-and-after photos from reviewers I’ve ever seen—and as a beauty editor, I’ve seen a lot.

After reading through these reviews, I’m inclined to believe who ever worked on the OG formula harnesses some level of sorcery. People shared that they started to actually see a difference within just a few days of using it, and as the person in the photo above wrote, “I’m a 43 year old woman…I was marveled by the reviews of this cream and this motivated me to buy it and also take before and after pics, which I’ve never done. The photos are a month and a day apart and you can clearly see skin is much smoother and I only applied it once a day in the morning. I’m extremely happy with the results…”

A separate reviewer (pictured above) noted how well the lifting cream also works on the face, writing “I bought this 3 weeks ago for my neck as a wrinkle prevention but I got curious as to what it could do for my face as well since I’m prone to crepey looking wrinkles and fine lines on my forehead, nose, and around the eyes. Just LOOK at these results after 10 days of use! I AM SOLD buddy, I am in complete disbelief.”

According to yet another fan, it can also yield some pretty serious results along the jawline. “I kind of suffer from double chin action and within 2 days of using this, it decreased my double chin,” they wrote. “Also! I use this at night and it doesn’t really have a strong smell or fragrance, so if you are sensitive to smells, this is pretty perfect.”

If you’re dealing with any or all of the above, consider trying out Gold Bond’s Neck and Chest Firming Cream while it’s on sale for $12. Opt into subscribe and save deliveries to always keep the results coming.

Peloton’s Emma Lovewell’s Memoir Unpacks Her No-Stress Exercise Philosophy

One look at Emma Lovewell’s Instagram account and it’s clear to see that the Peloton instructor travels nearly as much as she exercises. Hiking in St. Lucia, riding a motorcycle in Nicaragua, canoeing in Patagonia, wielding a samurai sword in Japan (yes, a sword)—the 35-year-old has seemingly been everywhere and done it all. But for her, traveling the world and having these experiences is about so much more than just the photo opp. “I didn’t travel internationally until I was 18, but once I started I was hooked. My mom is an immigrant, and there’s something about traveling that helped me understand her—and myself—better,” she says. “Growing up in a multicultural environment and comparing myself to my other friends, I always felt ‘other.’ But once I started seeing the world and realizing that there are so many different ways of living, I felt more resolve within myself.”

Lovewell’s social media posts also make it abundantly clear that her travels almost always involve some type of physical activity. Snowboarding, surfing, horseback riding—you name it, she’s done it. Yet despite her career as a fitness instructor (if you haven’t yet taken one of her Intervals & Arms rides, you’re missing out), Lovewell’s attitude towards staying fit while traveling is surprisingly relaxed for someone with a killer six-pack. The goal: Doing things that allow her to move her body, without having to spend time in a hotel gym.

Emma Lovewell's 'Live, Learn, Love, Well'

In May, Lovewell released Live Learn Love Well, a memoir that unpacks just how she became the uber-successful Peloton instructor she is today. Here, she talks to STYLECASTER about some of her all-time favorite vacation destinations, how she stays active while traveling, and how to squeeze in a 10-minute workout anytime, anywhere.

SC: Based on your Instagram, it looks like you’ve been all over the world. What have been some of your favorite destinations and travel experiences?

EL: I recently went to Japan and that was the trip of a lifetime. It was incredible. The culture there is so strong and the people are so nice. We were there for 11 days and spent a few days in Tokyo, then the rest in Northern Japan, which isn’t really a common spot for people to go. We went to Niigata, where they’re known for their knives and went to these Japanese knife factories and saw incredible craftsmanship and metalwork. We saw a Maiko performance of apprentice geisha. We stayed in a Buddhist temple and took a cooking class.

It sounds like you really immersed yourself in the local culture. Is that something you prioritize when you travel?

I feel like it’s so important for people to travel and get away from their homes in order to get a better perspective on life. When we can experience another environment and culture it really helps us understand ourselves, and the world, better. So seeking out authentic, cultural experiences when I’m traveling internationally is incredibly important. I’m from Martha’s Vineyard, a super popular tourist destination, and so I know that the locals always know what’s best. Whenever I travel somewhere, I always like to talk to locals and ask what they suggest I do, so that I can really get that local perspective.

Let’s talk about how you’re staying fit during all of these travels. Are you making it a conscious priority to carve out time to exercise?

My boyfriend Dave, whom I travel with a lot, and I are both generally active people. We love to move our bodies. So when we’re traveling, I’m totally a proponent of adding in that movement and physical activity and fitness into things we’re doing and experiences we can have. I’d rather do that than spend an hour in a basement hotel gym. Like in Japan we did this samurai class, where we got to learn martial arts moves and hold a samurai sword. When something like that is a part of my vacation, then I consider that my workout. I’m up and moving.

What kinds of physical experiences have you had at other places you’ve traveled?

We recently went to San Sebastian, Spain and there we rented electric bikes. Everyone was making fun of the fact that I’m a spin instructor and was riding an electric bike, but it’s an amazing way to see a city. I’d also go for runs there. I’d be stopping every five minutes to take pictures so it wasn’t my most intense workout, but I was moving my body and seeing the city at the same time.

On beach vacations, I’m always swimming or wake surfing and staying active in that way. We’ve been to the Galapagos twice, Dave’s sister used to live there, so we really got the local experience. The scuba diving there is incredible, I got to dive with hammerheads all around me. We’ve also done surfing trips to Nicaragua and Mexico. Those were trips planned specifically around the destinations being good surf spots, and surfing is the hardest workout ever.

One of my favorite US trips was Alaska. I went in the middle of winter and had pretty low expectations, but was completely blown away. It completely surpassed my expectations. You see mountains coming straight out of the ocean into the sky and the most incredible sunsets. There I was hiking and snowboarding every day.

So, what happens when you’re on a trip and there isn’t a lot of physical activity built in? Do you still work out?

There have definitely been some vacations where I wasn’t moving that much. And I do start to feel kind of stuck and like I need to do something. So that’s when I’ll literally take just 10 minutes to do something in the hotel room that gets my body moving. Even just some planks, squats or lunges, and push-ups—that’s abs, legs, and upper body. I have to plug the Peloton app, because there are great 10-minute core classes on there. I’ll do those, even if it’s my own. All of the Peloton body weight classes, even the five, 10, or 15-minute ones, are great. You can also put on some music and have a dance party in your room. Most songs are about three minutes long, so cue up three of your favorites, and that totally counts as a 10-minute workout right there.

Even 70 Year-Olds Say This $25 Firming Body Lotion Leaves Their Skin ‘So Soft and Smooth’

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

Let’s be honest: Many of us are guilty of slathering on serums and creams to keep the skin on our faces tight and smooth, yet blissfully neglect the areas past our necks. This may be a tough pill to swallow, but doing so will only allow premature aging to arise sooner across delicate areas, such as the hands and chest. Thankfully, adding firming body care into your routine can alleviate some of the existing damage while preventing further signs of it appearing.

Start with Nativa Spa’s Quinoa Firming Body Lotion, an ultra-concentrated, dermatologist-tested formula rich in quinoa oil and Omegas 3, 6 and 9. These nutrient-packed ingredients bring a surplus of benefits, including smoothing over rough texture, boosting the skin’s natural moisture barrier, increasing your skin’s collagen levels, and improving firmness and elasticity—all within four weeks of use, per the brand.

And, judging by the hundreds of glowing reviews from shoppers, the hydrating lotion lives up to its claims. Reviewers love that it sinks into the skin almost immediately without leaving a greasy residue, with one 70 year-old user raving that it leaves their body feeling “so soft and smooth.”

“This in combination with the body oil leaves my skin radiant and glowing,” remarked one shopper. “Added bonus—my hubby loves the scent on my skin!”

The lingering (yet not overpowering) fragrance is another added benefit; it leaves behind a warm and floral scent on the skin with notes of peony and vanilla.

“I am crazy about the Quinoa Body Lotion! It smells amazing (sweet and warm) and goes on smooth, it never balls up or leaves residue streaks,” said a new fan. “It is the perfect consistency, it feels rich without being heavy, and moisturizes without being sticky or slimy. My skin looks instantly better when I put it on, but I haven’t used it long enough to see how much it tightens and firms over time.”

“This lotion feels and smells so heavenly! I use it right away when I get out of the shower,” said a third. “A little goes a long way, and the quality of this lotion feels like a million bucks. Also helps firm the skin and keep your body hydrated.”

If other items from the brand’s Quinoa body range have caught your eye, get your hands on the Quinoa Firming Ritual Set, which includes the Firming Body Oil, Firming Body Lotion, and Firming Hand Cream.  All of them are part of the Mother’s Day promotion: Buy $59 worth of product and save 15 percent; buy $69 worth of product and save 20 percent.
