5 Secrets to Cover Age Spots and Discoloration on Mature Skin (Without Looking Cakey)

5 Secrets to Cover Age Spots and Discoloration on Mature Skin (Without Looking Cakey)

Have you ever looked in the mirror and realized that your foundation looked heavy or cakey? That’s certainly a look that most of us want to avoid at all costs. As a makeup artist who specializes in working with women over 50, one of the questions I get most often is, “How do I cover up the redness, age spots or discoloration on my face without my makeup looking heavy or cakey?”

I’ll answer that question today and share my 5 best secrets for creating a flawless looking complexion that looks natural, soft and beautiful.

Don’t Neglect This First Step

Before we talk about the five secrets, it’s first necessary to touch on skin care. Because as most of us know, there’s no way we can look our best without taking a few moments to prep our skin before applying makeup.

The first skin prep step is exfoliating our skin twice a week (unless you have rosacea), so that the dead skin cells which accumulate on our face don’t build up and cause problems like clogged pores, uneven skin texture and dull skin. They can also lead to bacterial infections and acne breakouts.

Removing dead skin cells also allows improved blood circulation in the skin’s tissues which helps our skin look better. And it allows skincare products to better penetrate the skin so they can be more effective. And since we’re paying good money for skin products, we definitely want our skin care to be as effective as possible!

Step Two

The second step is to moisturize our skin. But we want to make sure to save the heavier moisturizer for night and use a lighter moisturizer during the day. That’s because it’s easy for makeup products to sink into our skin if we apply too much moisturizer or use moisturizers that are too thick or heavy. And be sure to let the moisturizer fully sink in and dry before applying any makeup products.

Now let’s focus on those five secrets to covering age spots and discoloration so our skin looks flawless and not cakey.

Secrets #1 & #2: Where and How

The first secret is about where to apply it, and the second secret is how to apply it. We first want to make sure to shake any liquid foundation because most of the time the way we store our foundation allows the pigments to settle at the bottom which can affect the overall color and look of the foundation. Also, the oils in the foundation can separate, so we need to give the product a good couple of shakes.

Then it’s a good idea to squeeze out or pump out a small amount of the foundation onto the back of our hand.

Now, let’s focus on where to apply it. With your finger, brush or sponge, pick up a small amount and only apply it to the areas where you need the most coverage – not necessarily all over the face.

For most of us, the areas that will need the most coverage will be the center of our face, including our forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. These areas are the ones that are more likely to have redness and blemishes, so applying foundation on these areas first can help create a more even complexion. And some of us also have age spots in other areas which need some attention. For instance, I have age spots along the lower part of my jaw line – especially on the left side of my face.

Now, let’s talk about how to apply the coverage. We want to start by applying a small amount of our usual foundation to just one of these areas at a time since foundation can quickly settle into the skin and we don’t want it to dry before we blend it in. And we just want one light layer. We can always apply a second light layer if we need it, but it’s best to create one light layer at a time and gradually build up the foundation if needed.

Then blend the foundation outwards towards the edge of the face. By applying foundation in this manner we’re getting the most coverage on the areas that need it the most. This method of applying and blending foundation in one small area at a time ensures that the foundation doesn’t settle into our skin unevenly.

In the video, I’ll apply the foundation onto one side of my face since I’ll be doing something different to the other side. Next, I’ll apply foundation to ½ of my chin and then ½ of my forehead. And finally, I’ll dot some foundation along my lower left jawline where I have a series of age spots and then I’ll blend it in.

Secret #3: Use that Sponge

Secret number three is to go back over our entire face with a very slightly dampened makeup sponge. That means a sponge that we’ve not only squeezed all the water out of with our hand, but which we’ve also wrapped in a cloth or paper towel and given a second squeeze. It’s important to make sure the sponge is only slightly damp so it only absorbs any excess amount of makeup.

Using a makeup sponge in this way ensures that our makeup doesn’t look cakey. And be sure to pounce the sponge along deep lines such as our marionette lines.

Secret #4: Needing Greater Coverage

Secret number four applies to those of us who need more coverage for age spots and discoloration. Surprisingly, it is possible to use a foundation with greater coverage and still avoid a cakey look. The secret is to use a foundation that provides great coverage, but which is lightweight.

Two foundations that have great, lightweight coverage that I’d recommend are KVD’s Good Apple Foundation and Doll 10’s Super Coverage Makeup. (And if you’d like to get a 15% discount on the Doll 10 product, be sure to use the link above and the Discount Code Elise15 at checkout.)

In the video, I’ll show you how fantastic the coverage is with both of these foundation by applying each of them on top of the vein on the underside of my wrist. If a product has really good coverage, you won’t be able to see the color of the vein. This test demonstrates the excellent coverage that both of these foundations provide.

In the video I’ll apply the KVD foundation that has greater coverage in the same way and in the same places as I did the first foundation, but on the other side of my face.

Secret #5: Use Concealer

Secret number five is to avoid using foundation altogether. Instead, use concealer just on the areas that need the most coverage and then gently feather out the product so there are no harsh lines of demarcation. But we will want to use a concealer that has really good coverage.

Two of my favorite concealers that have great coverage are Clinique’s Even Better Concealer and Natasha Denona’s Hy Glam Concealer. In the video, I’ll demonstrate how both of these concealers look on my face.

By using the techniques we’ve talked about today, you can cover age spots and discoloration so your skin will look flawless, and you’ll never again have to worry about your makeup looking cakey!

The Joyful Living Toolkit: 10 Transformative Practices

The Joy Toolkit 10 Transformative Practices

Are you rushing through life, missing out on its beauty? Do you feel like it’s slipping by too quickly to savor its richness?

Maybe you’re caught up in a whirlwind of problems and obligations or the monotony of mundane routines.

It’s so easy to drift away from mindfulness, to live on autopilot, ticking off tasks while yearning for “something more.” Yet, in doing so, we miss the richness of the present moment, feeling disconnected and not as fully alive as we could be.

So, I’ve been thinking – perhaps it’s time to hit pause, step off the treadmill, and reconnect with the essence of living joyfully.

Joyful living is about breaking free from habitual patterns and rediscovering the peace, gratitude, and wonder in being fully present. It requires a commitment to awareness and a conscious effort to slow down and savor life’s precious moments.

If you could use more joy (couldn’t we all?), try integrating some of these practices into your daily life:

Clean Up Unresolved Matters

Physical and mental clutter distract us from joy. Take stock of what weighs you down – whether it’s a messy closet, unresolved conflicts, or draining relationships – and take proactive steps to clear the clutter.

Creating space in our lives opens the door for joy, peace, and contentment to enter.

Remember the wise words of William James: “Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task.”

Focus on Your Own Journey

The temptation to control external circumstances or other people’s actions can lead to frustration and unhappiness. Instead of getting entangled in what you can’t change, redirect your energy towards self-awareness and personal growth.

By nurturing self-understanding and compassion, joy will arise within you, which will naturally radiate outward for the benefit of others.

Embrace Silence and Stillness

In the rush of daily life, the beauty of silence often eludes us. Yet, when we intentionally quiet the noise around us, we discover a profound sense of peace in the stillness.

By incorporating silence into our daily routine, we allow ourselves to bask in the serenity of the present moment, shedding stress and fostering clarity.

Mahatma Gandhi said it best: “In the attitude of silence, the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness.”

Practice Generosity

Shift from a lack mindset to one of abundance by giving away what you most want and need from others. Extend attention, love, and understanding generously.

In doing so, you’ll discover that fulfillment lies in enriching the lives of those around you, giving rather than receiving.

Engage Your Senses

Life’s beauty is often found in the simplest moments – if only we take the time to truly experience them. Slow down and engage your senses fully.

Tune in to simple pleasures, whether savoring the taste and smell of food, relishing the touch of a loved one, or marveling at the sights and sounds of nature.

By immersing ourselves in the richness of sensory experiences, we awaken to depth, delight, and connection.

Bestselling author and speaker Gretchen Rubin published an excellent book last year on how exploring the senses can get us out of our heads and into the world.

Check out Life in Five Senses to learn how observing the world around us more closely can change how we feel in amazing ways.

Acknowledge the Good

Don’t overlook the blessings amidst life’s challenges. Take inventory of what’s working well – the comfort of home, the love of friends, cherished family relationships, or life’s simple pleasures.

Cultivating gratitude for the good fosters profound contentment and joy.

Choose to Forgive

Harboring resentment or holding onto grudges only diminishes your capacity for joy. Choose the path of forgiveness – both towards others and yourself.

Learn from your own mistakes and regrets, and then move on. Release the burdens of the past and commit to living in the present moment with an open heart.

Learn from Adversity

Life is full of triumphs and tribulations, each offering valuable lessons for growth. Rather than viewing challenges as obstacles, approach them as opportunities for learning and self-discovery.

Reflect on the patterns that emerge from difficult experiences, and consciously respond with resilience and wisdom.

Cultivate Positivity

Choose to approach life with a positive attitude. Try to replace complaints with patience, criticism with kindness, and negativity with optimism. By cultivating a pleasant demeanor, we uplift our spirits and contribute to a more harmonious world.

This doesn’t mean having a “good vibes only” approach to life and disregarding negative emotions.

Negative emotions can provide important information, leading to beneficial life changes. Yet, we can feel our feelings, express ourselves, and choose to move forward in a positive way.

Go After It

Ultimately, leaning into joy is a profoundly personal journey. Take time to identify what truly brings you happiness and fulfillment and prioritize those pursuits in your life.

Whether it’s creative passions, nurturing relationships, or immersing yourself in nature, honor the things that light up your soul.

Final Thoughts

Joyful living is a decision that requires intention, mindfulness, and a willingness to let go of what no longer serves you.

By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you’ll discover that joy isn’t just an elusive dream; it’s a tangible reality waiting to be embraced.

Let’s Start a Conversation:

What would you suggest to a friend who feels like there’s little joy in her life? What does joyful living mean to you? Is there anything you would add to this toolkit?

These trends can be driven by various factors, including cultural shifts, technological advancements, and the influence of fashion designers, celebrities, and influencers. Trends often reflect the mood and aspirations of society at a given time, offering a snapshot of what is considered stylish or desirable.

For women over 50, fashion trends can be a way to express individuality and adapt to changing seasons while staying true to a personal sense of style. Key Trends for Fall/Winter 2024/25

Fashion is a form of self-expression, and this season’s trends offer endless possibilities to show your unique style while enjoying the warmth and beauty of the winter season.

Luxurious Layering

Layering continues to be a defining trend this fall and winter – but with a twist. The focus is on combining textures and fabrics to create a look that is both cozy and chic. Think soft cashmere sweaters under tailored wool coats, or a silk blouse paired with a chunky knit cardigan. The art of layering allows for versatility—you can easily adapt your outfit to fluctuating temperatures while maintaining an elegant appearance.

For example, you might start with a light silk or cotton base layer, add a fine-knit cashmere sweater, and top it off with a structured wool coat. Accessories like scarves and gloves in complementary colors or contrasting textures can further improve your layered look. The key is to mix and match materials to achieve a look that’s polished yet practical.

Rich Jewel Tones

Deep, vibrant colors are making a strong statement this season. Shades like emerald green, sapphire blue, and amethyst purple are not only flattering but also add a pop of color to the typically muted winter palette. Jewel tones are particularly appealing because they complement a wide range of skin tones and can easily be incorporated into both casual and formal outfits.

Consider incorporating these colors through statement pieces such as a tailored coat, a luxurious scarf, or a classic handbag. If you prefer a more subtle approach, try wearing jewel tones in the form of accessories—think gloves, hats, or even a pair of striking earrings. The richness of these colors adds a sense of sophistication to any ensemble.

Tailored Outerwear

Outerwear is always a focal point of fall and winter fashion, and this season, tailored pieces are in the spotlight. Structured coats with clean lines, belted waists, and oversized lapels are both flattering and functional. Whether you opt for a classic trench or a modern wrap coat, the emphasis is on fit and form.

Tailored outerwear not only provides warmth but also compliments your silhouette. For women over 50, a well-fitted coat can be transformative, adding an instant sense of style and confidence. Look for details such as double-breasted buttons, epaulettes, or a high collar to add an extra touch of elegance. Pair your coat with sleek boots and a structured handbag to complete the look.

Wide-Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers are back, offering a sophisticated alternative to skinny jeans and leggings. These trousers are not only comfortable but also elongate the legs, creating a sleek, flattering silhouette. The beauty of wide-leg trousers lies in their convenience – they can be dressed up with a tailored blazer for work or paired with a cozy sweater for a more casual look.

This season, look for wide-leg trousers in fabrics such as wool or tweed for a classic fall look, or go for luxurious materials like velvet for a more evening-appropriate ensemble. The key is to ensure the fit is just right – high-waisted styles are particularly flattering as they define the waist and create a longer leg line.

Textured Fabrics

This season, textured fabrics like velvet, corduroy, and tweed are in vogue, adding depth and interest to any outfit. Whether it’s a velvet blazer, a tweed skirt, or corduroy pants, these materials are perfect for adding a tactile element to your wardrobe. Textured fabrics not only provide visual interest but also bring a sense of luxury and warmth, which is essential during the colder months.

Experiment with mixing different textures within one outfit – for example, pairing a velvet jacket with a silk blouse and wool trousers. The contrast between the materials creates a sophisticated, layered look that is perfect for fall and winter. Textured fabrics also work well in accessories, such as a quilted handbag or a pair of suede boots, which can add a rich, tactile dimension to your outfit.

Statement Accessories

Accessories are taking center stage this season. Oversized scarves, statement belts, and structured handbags are all must-haves. The trick is to choose accessories that complement your outfit and add a unique flair.

A statement belt, for example, can cinch in a voluminous coat, creating an hourglass silhouette, while a bold scarf can add color and warmth to a neutral outfit.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with oversized earrings or chunky bracelets to add a contemporary twist to classic outfits. This season, accessories are about making a statement without overpowering the overall look.

Classic Knitwear

Knitwear is a staple of any fall/winter wardrobe, and this season is no exception. From turtlenecks to cable-knit sweaters, the emphasis is on classic styles with a modern twist. Look for pieces with interesting details, such as balloon sleeves, asymmetrical hems, or mixed textures.

Layer a chunky knit sweater over a silk blouse for a cozy yet classy look, or go for a fine-knit turtleneck under a blazer for a more polished appearance. Classic knitwear can also be dressed up with the right accessories, such as a statement necklace or a pair of elegant earrings. The goal is to combine comfort with style, making knitwear an easy go-to for any occasion.

Intent vs. Interpretation: Navigating Communication in the Age of Misunderstanding

Intent vs. Interpretation Navigating Communication in the Age of Misunderstanding

In a world brimming with instant connectivity and endless streams of information, communication has never been more effortless or, paradoxically, more prone to misunderstanding. As a life coach, I frequently observe the fallout of miscommunication – family arguments, workplace disputes, and fractured friendships – all stemming from a simple gap between intent and interpretation.

The challenge is how to bridge this gap, especially in an era where technology and social media exacerbate the problem.

The Communication Conundrum: Intent vs. Interpretation

At its core, communication is about sharing thoughts and feelings between individuals. However, the intended message is not always what is received. This disparity between what is meant and what is understood can lead to significant conflicts and misunderstandings.

Why Miscommunication is More Common Today

The Rise of Digital Communication

Social media and text messaging have revolutionized the way we interact, making communication faster and more convenient. Yet, this very convenience can lead to misinterpretations. Text lacks the nuance of face-to-face conversation; tone, facial expressions, and body language – critical components of effective communication – are absent. A seemingly innocuous text can be read as curt or dismissive simply because the recipient cannot gauge the sender’s emotional state.

Abbreviations and Emojis

The use of abbreviations and emojis, while meant to streamline communication, often complicates it. Emojis can be interpreted in multiple ways depending on cultural context and personal experience. An abbreviation that is familiar to one person might be completely obscure to another. This can lead to misinterpretation and frustration.

Overloading Information

The constant bombardment of information through social media can desensitize us to the subtleties of effective communication. When we are used to digesting short, punchy updates, we might skim over important details or fail to fully process the information being shared, leading to misunderstandings.

Strategies for Clear Communication

For the Sender:

Be Explicit and Precise

When conveying a message, especially in written form, clarity is crucial. Avoid vague language and be as specific as possible about your intentions. If you are discussing a complex topic, take the time to outline your thoughts clearly.

Consider Your Tone

Written communication lacks vocal tone, so it is easy for messages to come across differently than intended. Before sending a message, review it to ensure it conveys the right tone. If you are discussing something sensitive, it might be worth picking up the phone or having a face-to-face conversation to avoid misinterpretation.

Anticipate Misunderstandings

Think about how your message might be interpreted by the recipient. Are there any phrases that could be taken the wrong way? Address potential misunderstandings preemptively by adding clarifying statements if needed.

For the Receiver:

Seek Clarification

If a message is unclear, do not hesitate to ask for clarification. It is better to address potential misunderstandings early on rather than letting them fester. Asking questions shows that you are engaged and interested in understanding the sender’s true intent.

Consider the Context

Understanding the context in which a message was sent can greatly impact how you interpret it. Consider the sender’s mood, the current circumstances, and the history of your relationship with them. This context can provide valuable insights into the meaning behind their words.

Avoid Jumping to Conclusions

It is easy to make assumptions based on partial information or past experiences. Before reacting to a message, take a step back and consider whether your interpretation is based on the message itself or on your own biases and previous experiences.

The Role of Technology in Miscommunication

The digital age has transformed how we communicate, but it has also introduced new challenges. Social media platforms, while offering incredible connectivity, often encourage brevity and immediacy over depth and clarity. The visual and auditory cues that help us interpret face-to-face conversations are absent in digital communication, which can lead to misinterpretations and conflicts.

Tips for Navigating Digital Communication

Choose the Right Medium

Not all messages are suited to text or social media. Important or sensitive topics are better discussed in person or via a call where you can provide and receive immediate feedback and clarifications.

Use Emojis and Abbreviations Judiciously

While emojis and abbreviations can add a personal touch, be aware of their limitations and potential for misinterpretation. When discussing something important, it might be better to rely on clear, complete sentences to avoid ambiguity.

Be Mindful of Timing

The immediacy of digital communication can sometimes lead to impulsive responses. Take time to think about your message and its potential impact before hitting send. This can prevent hasty comments that might be misinterpreted.

In the intricate dance of communication, the gap between intent and interpretation can easily lead to misunderstandings and conflict. By being mindful of how we express ourselves and how we interpret others, we can bridge this gap and foster clearer, more effective communication. Whether in personal relationships or professional settings, taking these steps can help ensure that our messages are received as intended, and that we are better equipped to understand others. In the end, effective communication is not just about what we say, but about how we listen and respond.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

Have you been on both ends of communication misunderstandings? How have you worked to resolve each situation? In what ways have you made your communication better?

The Microbiome-Wellness Connection

The Microbiome-Wellness Connection

You must know by now that our bodies are home to trillions of microorganisms – bacteria, viruses and other microbes. Together they form what’s called the microbiome. From the perspective of a former microbiologist, it’s both a beautiful word and a spectacular concept.

Far from being simple passengers, these little guys form a complex community that is essential to our health, influencing everything from our digestive processes to our mental and dental health.

Microbes run the world, in nature and in each of us. Research is only beginning to understand the impact of the microbiome on wellness. The more we learn, the more we realize that nurturing our microbiome is key to maintaining optimal health.

What Is a Microbiome?

The microbiome includes all of the microorganisms living in and on our bodies:

  • Bacteria – the most abundant and well-studied.
  • Viruses – including bacteriophages that infect bacteria.
  • Fungi – various species of yeast.
  • Protozoans – single-celled organisms that can be commensal or parasitic.

The largest and most diverse populations are found in the gut, skin, mouth, respiratory tract, and urogenital system.

They influence many aspects of our health.

Digestive Health

The microbiome plays the most obvious role in our digestive system. Certain bacteria in our gut can break down complex carbohydrates, such as dietary fiber, that our bodies can’t digest on their own.

It also produces essential vitamins, particularly vitamin K and several B vitamins, which our bodies can’t synthesize on their own.

Immune Function

Our microbiome helps our immune system distinguish between harmful pathogens and beneficial or harmless microorganisms, and responds accordingly by producing compounds that help regulate our immune response.

The gut microbiome, in particular, is closely tied to immune function. Did you know your gut makes up the largest component of your immune system? An estimated 70-80% of our immune cells reside in the gut.

Additionally, beneficial microbes compete with potentially pathogenic organisms for resources and space, forming a first line of defense against infections.

Mental Health and Mood

The connection between the microbiome and mental health is often called the gut-brain axis.

Studies have shown that the composition of our gut microbiome can affect stress responses, anxiety levels, and even cognitive function.

Have you ever tried a diet with regular consumption of fermented foods? If so, you’ll probably have noticed a boost in energy and mood. It does, however, depend on what else you’re consuming.

Fun fact: The gut microbiome produces about 90% of the body’s serotonin, a key mood regulator.

Another fun fact: Research is currently exploring the link between the microbiome and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Weight Management

Different compositions of gut bacteria are often associated with extreme weight issues, too much and too little. Our microbiome can influence how we store fat and may even impact our food cravings and appetite.

For example, we’ve learned that certain gut bacteria affect the production of hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. Understanding these connections more thoroughly could lead to new approaches to addressing both obesity and metabolic disorders.

Skin Health

The microbes on our skin form a protective barrier against potentially harmful organisms. They also help maintain the skin’s slightly acidic pH, which is inhospitable to many pathogens.

The skin microbiome also influences hydration levels and may affect skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

Dental Health

The oral microbiome plays an enormous role in dental health by maintaining a delicate balance in the mouth. It affects tooth decay, gum health, and overall oral hygiene.

Bacteria are responsible for protecting against harmful pathogens and maintaining proper pH levels. An imbalance in either or both can lead to issues like cavities and gum disease.

In addition, growing research suggests a substantial link between oral microbiome imbalance and chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Understanding this complicated relationship will open a whole new level of dental care.

As research progresses, we’ll uncover even more ways our microbial community influences our well-being. One thing is already crystal clear: the microbial world demands our respect.

Supporting Your Microbiome

Several factors influence your microbiome balance, including diet, antibiotics, medications, stress, environment, and lifestyle choices.

It’s important to make mindful choices. Here are some great options.

  • Consume probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut.
  • Eat prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, leeks and asparagus.
  • Increase fiber intake through fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Limit processed foods and artificial sweeteners.
  • Practice stress management techniques.
  • Maintain regular physical exercise.
  • Prioritize quality sleep.

Good ideas in many respects, right?

It’s also crucial to avoid unnecessary antibiotics, only use them when prescribed and necessary, and complete the entire course when prescribed. If you are prescribed antibiotics, it becomes even more important to help repopulate a healthy microbiome by focusing on eating nutritious whole foods and getting plenty of fiber in your diet.

The future of microbiome research is exciting! Whatever it holds however, paying attention to these tiny guys now can yield big rewards for our current health.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

How do your daily habits affect your microbiome? What are some practical steps you could take to improve your microbiome health? Do you enjoy eating fermented foods?
