Talking About the Unmentionable Body Conditions

bowel problems

It is something we do every day, more or less, from the day we are born until the day we draw our last breath. Throughout most of our lives, we gave it nary a thought and certainly never talked to anyone about it except, perhaps, our mother.

But as we grow older, it causes us more and more difficulties. It affects what we are willing to do and where we are willing to go, our general mood and, altogether, our sense of well-being.

I am talking, of course, about managing our bowels. What I used to call ‘number two’ as a child, ‘poo’ to my children and all sorts of words ever since.

This is not a medical discussion as I am not a medical doctor. My Ph.D. in political science offers very little help here.

But there is more to our bowels than medical issues. Much, much more.

Early Years

Unless you were very unlucky, it is probable that you never gave your daily bowel activity much thought when you were young.

You knew it was about to happen, you went, you washed your hands, and you went about your daily life with never a worry on that score.

Right through middle age, our bowels generally gave us little trouble. Yes, the occasional ‘runs’ when you were on holiday (with wonderful names such as Delhi Belly, Montezuma’s Revenge and the like) and the occasional constipation for one reason or another.

But for most of us, nothing worth thinking much about beyond a day or so.

Of course, if you were unlucky, perhaps you had some problems on that score. But the medical side is not what this article is about.

When we were children, it might be added, bowels were the subject of off-colour – and therefore slightly exciting – jokes. We learned new words. We thought they were funny. And daring.

That was a long time ago.

Later Years

And perhaps you are still at this stage of not giving this aspect of your life much thought. Lucky you.

But the older we get, the more this issue seems to affect our lives. Indeed, sometimes dominates the day-to-day. Like everything else to do with our bodies, our bowels just don’t seem to work as automatically and easily as before.

Sometimes, this is the result of medications for other ills, where constipation or the opposite seems to be a frequent side effect. As we have more and more ailments, small and large, and take more and more pills, this may be one explanation.

Or we don’t take enough exercise. Or eat the right things. Or we don’t drink enough. Or we drink too much. And so forth.

We begin to seek out solutions. If we find it hard to go, we eat loads of prunes or the equivalent. My grandmother ate stewed prunes every morning for breakfast “to keep [her] regular.” I had no idea what she was talking about until my mother explained.

Or we buy over-the-counter remedies. Or talk to our doctor.

And the same sort of thing, if we go too often.

The Impact on Our Lives

But what I really want to write about is the impact of these minor bowel problems on our day-to-day lives. Not bowel cancer, which is a different matter altogether.

When you are uncomfortable in that department, all sorts of things happen. If you have diarrhoea (or “dire rear” as my daughter aptly called it as a child), you will be reluctant to travel very far. Your body will feel out of sync.

But I believe constipation is more common among older people. This can cause headaches and other bodily discomfort, sometimes quite disorienting.

Even more importantly, it can make you grouchy all day. Just out of sorts and with little joy in life. And you may not feel like doing much – certainly not out of the house.

You feel all the time as if you are waiting for something to happen. Which you are.

Facilities

In both cases, it is terribly important to know at all times where the relevant facilities are.

Shopping can be a nightmare unless there is somewhere convenient to go. You scout out all possible places, just in case. Perhaps you learned when your children were small, if you still live in the same area.

I don’t know about other countries, but in England churches – of all places – can be a terrible desert. I appreciate that it might be difficult and expensive for them to make renovations, but they often exclude (for this reason) the very people who most want to be there.

The Worst Part

And for many of us, the worst part is we never talk about this issue to anyone. We suffer in silence. We have been taught that it is ‘not nice’ to raise the subject, so we don’t. Sometimes, not even to our own spouse.

Indeed, we make up excuses to our friends for why we won’t go somewhere. Certainly not to the countryside, but also many other places. Perhaps even to their own house.

But if we are all having the same problem, why are we so reluctant?

I would bet that if you said to a friend that you were having problems in that department, she would say “oh yes, me too.” It might bring you closer. It would certainly be a relief to be able to talk about it.

Why not give it a try?

Do you suffer frequently in the bowels department? Do you ever discuss it with anyone?

Shoppers With Acne-Prone Skin Swear This $20 Sunscreen Has Never Broken Them Out

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

Your mom, grandma, dermatologist and fave TikToker have all wagged their fingers at you about the importance of wearing sunscreen. It’s a skincare sin if you’re not applying SPF every single morning. You could pick up the first sun cream that pops up in your search, but you’d be better off doing your research and finding a formula that caters to your complexion’s exact needs. If you’re like me and have acne-prone skin, then you know the struggle of nailing a sunscreen that doesn’t lead to bright red blemishes the next morning. Lucky for you (and me), we found a solution that is tailor-made for all of us pimple-prone folks.

What makes Hero Cosmetics’ Force Shield Superlight Sunscreen different from all the other blemish-inducing formulas you’ve tossed over the years? It’s formulated specifically for those who have acne. Not only does it have a weightless gel-cream consistency, unlike many sunscreens that take on thick, goopy textures that immediately summon breakouts, but Force Shield is also super lightweight and lets your skin breathe all day.

The formula mixes 17.53 percent non-nano zinc oxide (broad-spectrum sun protection), a blend of antioxidant superfood botanicals and extremolytes (naturally defensive bio-ingredients). Together, these key ingredients prep and prime your skin—whether you’re wearing makeup or going au naturel—and leave your complexion smooth rather than greasy.

Not to mention, the sunscreen’s green tint helps counteract the redness that often overtakes acne-prone skin (especially post-breakout).

“It works very well for my acne-prone, sensitive skin (rosacea + hormonal acne!),” wrote one five-star reviewer. “Once you put it on, you forget about it. It has a slight green tint to it that mildly neutralizes redness.”

A sunscreen that doesn’t trigger acne flare-ups and conceals redness? The hydrating Force Shield Superlight Sunscreen is truly heaven-sent and we’re already shopping it for $20 on Amazon.

Hero Cosmetics’ sunscreen is sheer, 100 mineral and reef-safe. It excludes silicone and fragrance, meaning it won’t irritate your skin or clog your pores. All of these benefits make it suitable for those with sensitive skin, too.

Each morning, rub this sunscreen all over your face after you’ve applied your summer skincare essentials. Be sure to reapply it every two hours and especially after you’ve gone swimming or sweat a lot.

“This may be the ONE. I have been looking for a lightweight mineral sunscreen for some time now. This product delivers,” raved one shopper. “Smooth and light with ample SPF. Many mineral sunscreens are heavy and sticky, this one is not.”

“This stuff is amazing! I struggle with breakouts and this stuff has never broken me out,” wrote another reviewer. “It’s unlike any other sunscreen I’ve used previously and I will be purchasing again!”

The verdict is in: Put your old SPF on the backburner and make room for Hero Cosmetics’ Force Shield Superlight Sunscreen. Your skin will be both protected and glowing thanks to its acne-friendly formula.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Finding Your Sense of Adventure and Creativity After 50 – Part 1

Sense-of-Adventure-After-50

There are a few myths about aging circulating out there, and here’s one of them: aging makes you less adventurous and less creative.

This is so not true. Let’s quickly debunk with these impressive women who hit their adventurous and creative strides well past their 6th decade:

  • Gladys Burrill is a cancer survivor who ran her first marathon at age 86 and became famous after finishing the Honolulu Marathon at age 92.
  • Author Laura Ingalls Wilder started writing at 43, and at age 65 she published Little House in the Big Woods, a series she continued until she was age 76.
  • Folk artist Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma Moses” began painting at age 78, had her first art show at age 80 in 1940, and painted until age 101.

And here’s some inspiration from someone who’s not as famous – Sherrill is a 72-year-old woman who sold all her possessions and packed up her house to travel the world. What started as a camping excursion turned into 10 years of globetrotting.

Want to make your sense of adventure and creativity come alive? Broken into two parts (to make it more digestible and achievable), here’s a step-by-step guide on how to embark on your journey:

Find Clarity

Being crystal clear on what matters to you can help tremendously when it comes to realizing your sense of adventure and creativity. While we all have a glamorized idea of what we think we want, the reality is, it takes a lot of work to simply define our truly authentic goals.

And chances are, it takes even more work to achieve them. Like anything challenging and truly gratifying in life, chasing your goals and dreams takes real work and endurance.

So, if your activities align with your core values – which are a focal point when finding clarity – you’ll be more likely to withstand any setbacks in the long-run as you work toward your goals and nurture your sense of adventure and creativity.

Self-reflection is a foundational step that most people miss when trying to figure out what activities they want to partake in, especially for the long-term. And while most people search far and wide, authentic clarity comes from within.

For women over 50, this step is especially important because they tend to live a life of duty. And as life gets in the way, your original life goals and desires that you had when you were younger can oftentimes end up locked up in a hope chest.

So, before you set off to try a wide variety of hobbies, activities and experiences, do some deep digging to uncover your authentic core values and desires.

Questions to Help You Find Clarity

Pulled from the 12 Weeks to a Rewired Retirement course, here are some questions to help you get started in finding clarity. Challenge yourself to think differently from your typical life routine. Ask yourself and dream big:

  • What would you do if you had more courage and no fear or uncertainty standing in your way?
  • What have you had to lock away in a hope chest because life got in the way?
  • What’s one thing you want to experience, accomplish or do in life so that you have no regrets?
  • What have you always wanted to learn? What are you curious about?
  • What three core values do you want people to envision when they think of you?
  • In just three words, what’s your philosophy for living?

There’s so much more to finding clarity. The key is to be diligent and patient with your self-reflection and brainstorming process. It’s a critical and foundational step.

Research Your Options

Once you’ve done this self-reflection and have your new sense of clarity, you’re ready to see what’s out there. Researching your options is so much simpler once you know exactly what you’re looking for.

From your list of brainstormed ideas, you’re now able to search with intent for opportunities that you can join.

You can start your search online, since the internet is a beast when it comes to finding resources. Then, as you explore offline options, brainstorm with like-minded people about where and how to engage in your new venture.

The key is in creating new experiences for yourself, which starts with engaging with new people who share your same core values and sense of adventure and creativity.

Adopt a Growth Mindset

Before you set off on your new venture, another important step is to adopt a growth mindset. When you create any new experience for yourself, it can not only feel awkward and strange, but it can most certainly come with its set of challenges.

Of course, you’re not used to doing things that put you out of your comfort zone and may have the inkling to stop or second guess yourself. And that’s ok. Out of your comfort zone is where all the good stuff happens.

The secret to having a growth mindset is to embrace challenge. Look forward to failures, setbacks and pain points, and learn the skill of learning. Then stop seeking approval.

By understanding this is all part of the process, and by appreciating the process, you’ll not only be more likely to grow as an adventurous and creative person, but you’ll also create lifelong learning and new fulfilling experiences for yourself in the long-term.

Looking forward to sharing Part 2 of this guide. Until then, happy summer!

How will you awaken your sense of adventure and creativity? What ideas come to mind as you brainstorm and self-reflect to find your clarity? Let’s have a chat and get creative!

These Best of the Best Makeup Products Never Fail Me! (Over 50)

best makeup products over 50

My joy as a makeup artist comes from helping those of us over 50 realize the potential of our best selves. We absolutely deserve to look and feel our best, and – with the right products and techniques – we absolutely can. Makeup can be a wonderful expression of our spirit, and it can also be just plain fun – especially when we use our favorite “best of the best” makeup products that never fail us.

So, in today’s article and accompanying video, I’m going to focus on a wonderful array of really outstanding makeup products which I feel are particularly top notch products for those of us over 50. Before recording the video I did my skin prep and my brows with my ABH Brow Powder Duo and Dip Brow gel. And I used my Sigma Eye Base in the color “Ignite.”

The Best of the Best Eyeshadows

There were three eyeshadow palettes that were in contention for the top spot as the “best of the best” today, but I have to go with a combination of my Natasha Denona Biba palette and my palette of single Sydney Grace eyeshadows to add some color.

I love the versatility of the neutral tones and colors of the Biba palette and the absolutely stunning shimmers that complement the neutrals. And the Sydney Grace colorful mattes are of equal quality and also stunning. The third palette that was in the running was my Transition palette from Dominique Cosmetics.

Two Great Face Primers Help Mature Skin

For face primer, I’m using my Benefit POREfessional Hydrating Primer on my nose and on either side of my nose along with a new favorite from Hourglass – their Vanish Primer – on the rest of my face. The Benefit primer does an excellent job of minimizing the appearance or larger pores, and the Hourglass primer helps to create a really lovely, blurred, airbrushed finish.

This Foundation Is Truly Special

And I’m more excited about the foundation I’ll be using than I’ve been about any foundation in a very long time. It’s Charlotte Tilbury’s Beautiful Skin Foundation which provides a medium coverage, hydrates and helps smooth and blur pores. But I feel the biggest benefit of this foundation is that it brightens the skin – noticeably – which is a huge benefit for those of us over 50.

Be sure to check out Elise’s YouTube channel which specifically focuses on makeup tips, techniques, and product reviews for those of us 50+. Don’t forget to subscribe!

Drugstore and High End Concealer

To help cover dark circles under my eyes, I’m using Elf’s Hydrating Camo Concealer in Light Peach as a corrector and will tap Fair Beige over it. Clinque’s Even Better Concealer in “Alabaster” is my “go-to” concealer for my age spots.

A Contour that Makes All the Difference

Originally, I thought I’d definitely be using EM Cosmetics’ contour stick in “Terra” as my contour which works beautifully because it’s a very soft formula. But, I recently tried another new contour which I like equally well – if not just a little bit better: Huda Beauty’s Tantour contour in the shade “Light.”

I’ve found that it works best to stamp it on – which I’ll be doing with my Essence buffing brush – and then blend out the edges with my sponge.

This Blush Is Unique and Stunning

For blush I’m using a product which I’ve absolutely fallen in love with: makeup artist Patrick Ta’s Double Take Crème and Powder blush combination in “She’s a Doll.” I have this color in his limited edition palette that came out earlier, but all the colors in this palette are now sold separately.

Patrick Ta recommends applying the powder shadow first and then applying the crème blush over it. Layering the crème on top of the powder really melts the blush into the skin.

It’s gorgeous. Because the powder is so pigmented, I like to apply it with a light, fluffy brush and then pick up the crème blush with my damp makeup sponge and simply pounce it over the powder blush. Since I need to put a light dusting of translucent powder in my T zone area, I’ll do that next with my Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder.

This Highlighter Is Unique

Choosing a favorite highlighter is like choosing a favorite child! But there’s just something about the color of the highlighter I chose – and the amount of glow – that really draws me in. It’s Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Highlighter Wand in “Spotlight” which is a rose gold color with silver light. The color is absolutely unique.

Finishing Powder Makes

Before applying lipstick, I’ll apply my Hourglass Ambient Light Finishing Powder, blush and bronzer. In the video I’m going to apply the Hourglass Ambient Light Finishing powder just to one side of my face first to see if we can tell the difference between the side with the finishing powder and the side without the finishing powder.

Then I’ll apply the finishing powder to the other side of my face. And my final step before lipstick is to go over every part of my face with a dampened sponge.

Lipstick for the Final Touch

Before applying my lipstick, I’m applying my Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer around the edge of my lips first, then my L’Oreal Age Perfect Lip liner (to prevent feathering) followed by my lipstick and gloss, which, unfortunately, are no longer available. We now have the finished look.

Using our “best of the best” products which never fail us is a wonderful way to give us an added boost of confidence throughout the day!

What are your top “best of the best” makeup products that never fail you? Are they long-time favorites or have your products been purchased more recently? What’s your most recently purchased favorite product? Have any of your favorite products gone out of sale? Do you miss them? Have you found replacements?
