Why Can’t I Lose Weight? How Trauma Sabotages Weight Loss for High Achieving Women (VIDEO)

weight and trauma

High achieving women in their 50s and 60s who struggle with making consistently healthy food choices tend to have one thing in common: a history of trauma.

Even if these same women have spent years in therapy and are at peace with the traumatic event or relationship, the lingering effects of trauma can still impact eating and weight loss.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma describes the way your emotions, beliefs and biology change in response to something bad happening.

The traumatic event can be a one-time exposure like a natural disaster, or the cause of trauma can be more complex, such as being raised by someone with mental illness, an eating disorder or addiction.

Unfortunately, the typical strategy for weight loss, All or Nothing Dieting, can cause trauma and exacerbate existing issues, resulting in sabotage to weight loss.

With All or Nothing Dieting you either have to eat “perfectly” or “what’s the point?”, and high achieving women often fall prey to this style of dieting because they feel they “should” be able to “eat perfectly.”

If you are a high achieving woman in her 50s and 60s, here is what you need to know about trauma and weight loss.

#1: Trauma History and Dieting

Your trauma history is keeping your nervous system on high alert, and All or Nothing Dieting teaches you that food works to numb the emotional discomfort

Described in medical literature for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as hypervigilance, one of the long-term effects of trauma is an overactive nervous system, even if it doesn’t meet the severity needed for a PTSD diagnosis.

An overactive nervous system makes you feel unable to relax or like you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

All or Nothing Dieting teaches your overactive nervous system that food works to numb the constant fear and anxiety when you’re “off” your diet; thereby sabotaging weight loss.

Because food is so effective at helping you cope with stress, fear, and any other emotion that might surface, you ultimately stop trusting yourself to make consistent healthy choices.

The solution is to cultivate the Courage to Trust yourself again, healing the harmful physical, mental and emotional effects of both All or Nothing Dieting and trauma so you can have a supportive relationship with food, your body and your health and eat with joy instead of eating to seek joy.

To Cultivate the Courage to Trust, Start with Calming Your Nervous System

Rather than focusing entirely on food to fix eating issues (which doesn’t work), you can change your behavior by working to calm your activated nervous system, the first pillar of the Courage to Trust Method.

One way to calm your nervous system is to take a moment to check in with your body periodically throughout the day. Take a deep breath and mentally scan your body, where do you feel tension? How can you care for yourself to release that tension?

I’ll be covering more ways to calm your nervous system and cultivate the Courage to Trust at the upcoming live training: How to Stop Obsessing about Food and Create Consistently Healthy Choices.

#2: The Terror of the Scale

Your anxiety about the scale comes from the belief your worthiness as a human is tied to your weight.

One of the most damaging aspects of All or Nothing Dieting is the way it’s been used by our culture to shame women for their changing bodies.

The All or Nothing myth is that women of high moral character should be able to achieve a beauty ideal that most people’s genetics don’t set them up for.

The number on the scale then is seen as a measure of personal value and worth. No wonder getting on the scale can produce so much anxiety!

This kind of relationship with the scale can sabotage weight loss because it points to a motivation for change rooted in self-disgust and fear of abandonment, and in my clinical practice I have never seen these motivations lead to sustainable change.

To Cultivate the Courage to Trust, Develop Self-Compassion

The solution to anxiety-producing weigh-ins and harmful motivations is provided by the second pillar of the Courage to Trust Method: Self-compassion.

Self-compassion involves treating yourself like you would a beloved friend and accepting, acknowledging and validating your emotions.

Applied to the scale, you can recognize how you are feeling about your weight, that your suffering makes sense and others experience it too, and use loving self-talk instead of self-criticism.

Many fear that self-compassion will allow them to enable their bad habits. Dr. Kristin Neff counteracts this fear when she talks about “fierce” self-compassion, the idea that self-compassion brings out your inner mama bear for your own self.

My advice: try self-compassion, it’s much nicer than the alternative.

#3: Inconsistent Eating Habits

Food obsession is caused by alternating between eating anything and everything, and restriction.

Whether you are in a period of restriction or indulgence, All or Nothing Dieting will always lead to feeling obsessed with food.

This preoccupation with food sabotages weight loss and your quality of life because you are constantly criticizing your eating habits and suffering from food guilt.

The Solution to Food Obsession Is Found in the Third Pillar of the Courage to Trust Method: Listening to Self

Once you understand what needs your food cravings are communicating, you can meet those needs without eating.

And yet, the result of trauma is often that it feels unsafe to explore your own needs or emotions.

That’s why it’s important to focus on calming your nervous system first, so the constant need to fight or flee doesn’t get in the way of listening to your needs. And then, the work of self-compassion is needed so self-criticism doesn’t make it unsafe to explore your needs.

If you’re ready to cultivate the Courage to Trust so you can be free from food and weight obsession and achieve your health goals, you can review the Courage to Trust Method and book a free consult call.

Do you have the courage to trust yourself around food? What have your eating habits taught you about yourself? Have you shown self-compassion toward yourself and in what ways?

‘XO, Kitty”s Anna Cathcart on Inclusion in Media & Filming the Anticipated Netflix Show in South Korea

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

If you watched all three Netflix movies in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, you know who Anna Cathcart is. She stole the show as Lara Jean’s (played by Lana Condor) little sister Kitty. In fact, she became such a fan favorite, that Cathcart got her own spin-off show, XO, Kitty, currently in production.  I caught up with the 19-year-old star over Zoom to find out everything I could about the anticipated Netflix show, how she’s handling her newfound fame and her modern partnership with Lego Dot®.

You teamed up with Lego Dots on a limited-edition poster drop. That’s different from the Legos I’m used to!

“I partnered with the Lego Group to help create three different posters that all have different aesthetics,” Cathcart says. “And all of them are personalizable with Lego dots and Lego dots patches.” She shows me the “Wandercore” poster behind her, a pastel design that would look cute in any dorm room. It’s adorned with these Lego dots, something I, as an elder millennial, had never seen before. They’re not like regular Legos.

“My favorite part about them is there are no set directions,” she continues. “You don’t have to build them in one certain way. You can just keep designing them and then even once you put them on your poster, you can still take off the tiles and redesign them. Because nothing’s permanent.”

She and Meghan Trainor are helping others express their creativity with a huge pop-up in Los Angeles this weekend.

Hosting a pop-up, filming a Netflix show — it’s a lot of pressure! How do you decompress?

“It can definitely be overwhelming,” Cathcart says. “I think social media is a great thing. But it can also cause a lot of stress, especially when it’s a part of your career, when there are certain expectations and it definitely can get to me. I’ve learned to go on Instagram only when I feel like it.” She’s not on the apps 24/7 or they would suck up all her time. (I need to take some of that advice.)

“I’m definitely a creative person,” she says. “I journal a lot and I draw a lot…And just surrounding yourself with good people. I’m best friends with my older sister, and we hang out a lot and just talk and rant about different things. Spending quality time together is definitely a way for me to decompress and feel just calm and on track and know I can continue and keep going.”

You aren’t very active on TikTok even though you have more than 2 million followers.

“I cannot bring myself to go on this app, because I will be on it for another four hours,” she admits. “And I know I can’t afford to do that.” She was just too busy in the XO, Kitty world to find time, plus she would get in a lot of trouble if she accidentally spilled set secrets.

“So much of my camera were things I’m just dying to post when the show comes out that I have to hold for so long,” she says. “That definitely was a part of it. I think photo dumps are my new favorite thing because there’s so much pressure and you can just sum up like the last few months of your life.”

Speaking of the show, what does it mean to you to be a part of a series that features such great Asian representation?

“Our cast has so much diversity,” she says. “A lot of different ethnicities. Especially because we’re based in Korea, our show is about an international school there, and we have a lot of Asian representation. It’s so exciting to see that happen more and more often…This should be normal. But I love that we are headed in the right direction.”

“I think what’s cool about it as well, is Kitty just happens to be Asian,” she continues. “She’s just a girl who’s living her life. And she’s exploring who she is. She’s in high school and she’s doing her thing. Of course, [being Asian] is a really big part of her. And we do dive into that a bit. lt’s just a beautiful part of her. And that really special type of representation, I love getting to be a part of.”

Cathcart understands how important it is for people to see themselves on TV, to feel understood in media as a whole. “It’s such a magical feeling that you can’t compare it to anything else,” she adds. “I love getting to be a part of that.”

How was filming in South Korea?

“It sounds maybe dramatic, but I mean, every word of it: it was seriously the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten to do, to be immersed in a different culture, getting to live there,” Cathcart says. “I had been there when we shot the third movie, but that was a couple of weeks when we went to Seoul. This time, I was there for four months. I got to like really see the city and live there and experience it in such a different way which I loved and a lot of the cast as well were local.”

“I’ve been home now for like a month and a half,” she says. “I’m still trying to process what just happened. I can’t even believe that was real life.”

The beauty and fashion in South Korea are unlike anything else. Was it inspiring?

“The beauty industry there and style is so amazing,” she says. “Everyone, everyone, is just so stylish. Me and my mom would talk about it all the time. We’re walking down the street and go, ‘how does everyone look cool here?‘ Everyone just always looks awesome. I definitely went shopping a lot and tried to get inspiration.” She tells me the cute shirt she’s wearing is actually from Korea.

Of course, she had to get into Korean beauty while she was there, too. “I definitely got some face masks,” she says. “I had never had a facial before but I got a few facials while I was there and it was amazing. I’ve been missing out.”

What’s your beauty routine usually like?

“In general it’s low key,” she says. “I’m pretty natural but [beauty] is so much fun to play with and I love doing my makeup.” She uses a lot of drugstore items and cannot, cannot live without lip balm and/or gloss. She loves Glossier’s Balm Dot Com — but only the clear or mint ones. “That is my favorite because it works on a no-makeup face and makeup days because it works as a gloss but also works as a normal lip balm,” Cathcart adds.

Good taste and a hit Netflix show in the works? This girl is going places.

2 Easy to Prepare Vegan Dinners that Offer an Alternative to Processed Food

vegan dinner

I am going to share a few vegan recipes with you. Though I am not a vegan, I try to make a few dishes during the week that do not have animal protein for good health and economy.

I took on a great writing gig a few years ago where I created about 700 recipes. I am an advocate for healthy eating and opting for healthy choices at least 90 percent of the time.

I feel like these days we have to fight back with all the processed food and eat more produce to compensate for the depleted soil.

Gardens are sprouting up everywhere. Even if you just grow some herbs and a few tomatoes you are improving your health. Both of these recipes will keep well in the fridge for at least 5 days.

Pasta with Veggies

Ingredients

1/4 cup of olive oil

2 tablespoons of wine vinegar

1/4 cup of water

12 ounces of your favorite pasta (check the label to be sure it is vegan)

1 cup of chopped onions

1 cup of chopped broccoli

1 cup of chopped carrots

1 cup of sliced mushrooms

5 roma tomatoes chopped

Spices: 2 tablespoons each of oregano, basil, tarragon, garlic powder and lemon pepper spice

Directions

  • Cook the pasta according to the package and set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a pan.
  • Stir in all of the spices.
  • Add all the veggies except the tomatoes.
  • Add about 1/4 cup of water and cook for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the vinegar.
  • Add the tomatoes.
  • Cook the veggies until tender.
  • Stir the pasta in with the veggies.
  • Sprinkle on vegan grated parmesan cheese.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve the dish right away.

*Adding vinegar to the veggies cuts down on salt use.

Curried Garbanzo Beans

Ingredients

1 tablespoon of turmeric

1 tablespoon of coriander

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 teaspoon of cumin

1 teaspoon of ginger

1 teaspoon of black pepper

1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)

1/3 cup of Sesame seed oil

1/2 cup of sesame seeds

2 medium cans of organic garbanzo beans drained and rinsed

1 cup of chopped onions

1 cup of thinly sliced carrots

1 thinly sliced medium size potato

1 cup of sweet red peppers chopped

1/4 cup of chopped fresh parsley

1 cup of coconut milk

Directions

  • Mix all the ingredients for the curry spice together and set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a pan, add the potatoes and cook for ten minutes.
  • Add all the veggies except the garbanzo beans and cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the garbanzo beans.
  • Add the sesame seeds.
  • Warm the coconut milk in a small pot. Add the spices and stir until they are dissolved, and the coconut milk is warm.
  • Pour the coconut mixture over the veggies and mix thoroughly.
  • Serve immediately for best taste.

*I normally cook fresh beans but I prefer garbanzo beans in the can as they are challenging to cook.

In the model’s TikTok, she says her complexion acts up because of stress, travel, lack of sleep, PMS and testing out a new product, which are very common causes of irritated, inflamed skin. Hailey adds that she remedies all of this by applying calming, healing formulas that keep bacteria away. Doesn’t seem like too much to ask for, right?

Avène’s moisturizer fires on all cylinders thanks to its skin-loving ingredients. First off, it contains C+ – Restore, a proprietary postbiotic ingredient that is chock-full of proteins that aid in skin restoration. A copper-zinc sulfate complex maintains a healthy skin environment—which promotes faster recovery—and the brand’s signature thermal spring water soothes skin.

After learning of this stellar trio of ingredients, it makes total sense why Hailey reaches for this cream when her skin is rebelling. Whether you’re in the middle of a stressful work situation, have been on back-to-back flights or can’t seem to get the optimal eight hours of sleep each night, there’s no need to panic when you have Avène’s Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream in your corner.

“My favorite moisturizer ever. I’m not recovering from any procedures, I just love this stuff,” wrote one reviewer. “Combined with the Eau Thermale, it sinks in and doesn’t leave my skin feeling oily. The chronic dry patches and itchiness I used to feel are gone. My skin is clearer than ever before—I’ve never used any moisturizer that does such a great job!”

Another one wrote, “Cicalfate Restorative cream is the best cream I have ever used. I tried so many creams and I can tell everyone this cream heals your skin, calms red skin and is hydrating. I use it every day.”

Real Housewives of Dubai Season 1 Finale

While I never anticipated seeing a goat being given as a gift on any Real Housewives franchise (presents for Julia Lemigova excluded), I certainly never thought I would see a goat funeral. And while it sounds like we will never really know what happened to poor Miss Goat, we do know that she was put to rest in style with a rendition of her wearing a Chanel harness front and center being admired by guests in designer clothing.

Miss Goat’s mom, Lesa Melan, surely made her stylish pet proud in her designer logo strap mini dress, kind of along the same theme as her harness. While Lesa’s exact dress has been put to rest, there is an almost identical version fully stocked and ready to shop. And you know when it comes to these matters, I certainly don’t kid.
