This cold weather is seriously no joke and it has my skin in a bit of a pickle. I’ve been packing on products that lock in moisture, since dry patches keep popping up left and right. Moisturizer is by far the most important step in hydrating your skin, so if you’re looking for one that is thicc (yes, thick with two C’s), Hailey Bieber has the perfect product for you.

In a recent GRWM video that the model posted on TikTok, she squeezes moisturizer out of a bright green tube that is all too familiar. Weleda’s Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream has been a ride-or-die formula for celebs like Julia Roberts, Victoria Beckham and Rebel Wilson. Now, Mrs. Bieber has officially joined the club and declared her love for the product.

So what makes this celeb-approved moisturizer a must-have in your skincare routine? Just that it nourishes dry skin by locking in moisture and adding a dewy finish to your complexion. Hailey can confirm, since in the TikTok video, she says, “I like to get like a richer, heavier cream and just put that in some spots where I feel like I get more dry and that I want a little more like sheen and highlight under the makeup. I’ve had a lot of makeup artists use this on me and I love it.”

She adds, “I feel like it does the trick that I’m wanting of just adding a little bit more hydration and sheen in the areas where I want it.”

The Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream contains beeswax, chamomile, calendula and pansy to calm skin, nourish, hydrate and soften. Just know that this moisturizer is super thick, so you’ve got to be a fan of heavier creams.

Not to mention, it’s a multitasking product that functions as both a moisturizer and a primer, as Hailey points out. You could also rub the thick goop on your dry hands and elbows or dab it on top of your makeup as a highlighter. Heck, you could even smooth frizzy hair and hydrate dry ends with this formula. The options are truly endless with this versatile product.

As if this face and body cream couldn’t get any better, it’s discounted on Amazon for just $11 this Cyber Monday (remember to clip the coupon!). Yup, Hailey’s fave moisturizer is on sale for such an affordable price tag that you can’t possibly say no. Shop it while the deal lasts, and make sure you sign up for a Prime membership for fast shipping and other benefits.

There’s one more important detail about this product. Several Amazon shoppers are comparing it to La Mer’s Crème de la Mer, which is another fave in Hollywood, except it costs $380 for a two-ounce tub.

I put on my investigating cap to figure out exactly which ingredients the two formulas have in common, and here are my findings.

  • Lanolin: This ingredient moisturizes and softens skin like no other.
  • Glycerin: The La Mer product features glycerin, while the Weleda one uses glyceryl linoleate, which is a monoester of glycerin and linoleic acid. This ingredient replenishes and hydrates skin.
  • Sunflower oil: The La Mer formula contains sunflower seedcake, while the Weleda one calls on sunflower seed oil. Sunflower oil improves hydration in the skin.
  • Sweet almond oil: The Crème de la Mer incorporates sweet almond seed meal, while the Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream mixes in sweet almond oil. This ingredient is known for its soothing abilities, even for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It also softens the skin.

As you can tell from the two ingredient lists, these products are a lot more similar than you’d expect, considering their differing price tags. This just goes to show that you can get equally as good skincare benefits from more affordable formulas, like Weleda’s Skin Food cream

Even Amazon shoppers have been comparing the two moisturizers in the reviews section.

One wrote, “I’ve tried a lot of heavy thick creams in [an] attempt to quench my extremely parched skin; CeraVe w/ Hyaluronic Acid, Nivea, First Aid Ultra Repair, even La Mer—none were nearly as effective or worked half as long as Weleda Skin Food.”

Another shopper wrote, “I used to use La Mer as my primary moisturizer and stopped it in favor of Skin Food. That’s how good it is! I have sensitive skin and it calms everything down quickly. In the morning I mix my SPF with it. At night, I use my eye cream, then layer on Skin Food. Simple routine but great results. I get frequent compliments now that I have ‘lovely, glowing skin’ which is a first in my life.”

The ultra-nourishing cream flaunts a 4.6-star overall rating and so many positive reviews, so clearly Hailey Bieber and all of its other stans are onto something.

Scoop up your own tube of Weleda’s celeb-loved cream that’ll give you a hydrated, dewy complexion, even through the toughest of winters. Just be sure to order it while it’s still on sale for just $11 on Amazon.

Sweet Sleep and Dreams – And the Benefits

sweet dreams

I’ve had a book on the bedside table for a year or so, slowly reading it chapter by chapter. I started and finished many other books in the meantime, but this one was not to be hurried through.

The book, Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams, written by Matthew Walker, Ph.D., is a book that initiated a change in my sleep habits long before I finished reading it.

The author has devoted his career to the study of sleep and is director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Human Sleep Science. He has published numerous sleep studies over his career.

Seeing the Benefits from the Start

One chapter in, I was convinced that my sleep habits were detrimental to my overall health and longevity. As I continued reading, I soon realized that a full night’s sleep on a regular basis is essential to my long-term health.

You don’t need to read the book in entirety to get a short-cut benefit of Walker’s wisdom. The last several chapters of the book outline what to do to improve your quality and quantity of sleep. These would include examining the use of electronics, control of the amount of light, and room temperature. He has also included an appendix from NIH, Twelve Tips for Healthy Sleep.

However, if you take that shortcut and avoid delving into the detail and the myriad of possible ramifications that sleep deprivation can bring about, you would miss a deeper understanding of the role sleep plays in our wellbeing as well as the occasional subtle humor the author expresses in his text.

The book was of interest to me in two ways. First, and most importantly, how my sleep (or lack of it) has an impact on my health. The second is an interest and understanding of the dream aspect of our sleep.

Sleep and Health for a 70-Something

Over the years, I have given short shrift to sleep, caving in to study, career and family demands. Goodness knows how much damage I have done to my overall health, not to mention my longevity, but it’s not too late for me to make amends.

Since I began reading Why We Sleep, I have made a point of working toward eight hours of sleep each night. I am seldom completely successful as I am conditioned over time to wake after somewhere between five and six hours of sleep. But I’m improving.

There are reasons for me – and maybe for you – to work toward that improvement, especially for those of us in our senior years. Some areas addressed by the author were lightning rods for me. Walker discussed the impact of the loss of sleep on the cardiovascular system, the likelihood of developing diabetes, a greater likelihood of accidents, the impact on the immune system, and potential development of Alzheimer’s Disease.

The World of Dreams

Dreams occur primarily during the REM (rapid eye movement) phase of sleep. Walker explores various research projects involving the nature of dreams and why we dream. After discussing those projects, he opines that the function of dreams is to nurse our feelings, our emotional and mental health.

He finds the second function is to problem-solve and to create. So, while we are asleep, our dreams are dealing with issues from our waking hours and maybe creating resolutions. Walker theorizes that dreams are a form of overnight therapy. He also finds in reviewing research that the ability to remember is solidified during sleep and our dreams are a part of that process.

Walker also discusses the ability of some people to have lucid dreams, the ability to know that you are dreaming and perhaps able to consciously control the dream.

Sleep Disorders

The book also discusses somnambulism, disorders such as sleepwalking that vary from harmless to problematic and all are interesting. Various types of insomnia, a condition many have experienced at one time or another, is discussed in detail.

My Takeaway

Sleep is a powerful tool. So, why was I giving this gift away? Concentrating on exercise has always been a part of my life, and I pay some attention to nutrition. But I may have been undermining my other healthy options maintained over the years by cutting myself short with less hours of sleep. But no more. If I want to live a long, healthy life, sleep will have to be a significant part of it. And moving forward, it will be.

Do you consider sleep as a cornerstone of healthy living? Has your attitude toward sleep changed since turning 60 – or 70?

4 Cold Weather Beauty Tips for Women Over 50

mature skin care

The best thing you can do on a cold day is light a scented candle and snuggle cosily in your bed with some good books and a hot cup of your favourite tea while the snow falls outside your window, creating the most beautiful scenery.

This is the ideal picture of a winter’s day which includes all its features, but omits some of its bad sides, like the fact that you can’t spend all day dreaming in your bed and that eventually you’ll have to go out of your house and face the harsh cold.

Even though winter is a rough season, and you will find a way to enjoy it, you must prepare yourself. You can resist the cold with warm layers of clothes, but don’t forget to protect your skin, which is very sensitive during this period. Read on to find out how.

Moisturizing, Moisturizing and, Again, Moisturizing

Dry and cold air, wind and snow may dry and harm your skin, so you need to protect it more than usual. You may already assume that the most important part of a skincare routine during the winter season is hydration.

So, instead of using a lightweight moisturizer, opt for one that complements your skin type, and preferably has all of these components: humectants, hyaluronic acid, collagen, vitamins, and SPF.

The last one – SPF – is extremely important considering one simple fact which many people usually forget – sun shines in winter same as it does in summer. Just because it doesn’t shine as brightly, it doesn’t mean that it can’t harm your skin, so you should apply sunscreen daily.

It’s much easier, not to mention cheaper, to do so if it’s already a part of the cream you use every day. Also, don’t forget to use a heavy night face cream – not so necessary during summer, but crucial for maintaining the level of hydration during the cold days.

A Gentle Touch

Moisturizing is not only important for your face, but also your body, so, after taking a shower (that shouldn’t last more than 15 minutes) don’t rub your skin with a towel, but use the towel to gently absorb the water from your skin’s surface and then apply the body moisturizer while the skin is still slightly wet. Instead of a lotion, choose a body cream specialized for dry skin, enhanced with natural ingredients.

If you want more intensive care, use natural oils and serums to boost the level of hydration and add glow to your skin. They also have a calming effect, so they can help you reduce harmful influences.

The skin on your hands is the second most exposed part of skin during winter – the skin on your face being the first. Yes, you can use gloves, but sometimes you’ll need to get those on and off so many times during the day to do something, that it would be much easier not to even put them on.

Your skin dries off after each washing and, considering that hands don’t have many oil glands, they can’t recover by themselves, so you’ll need to pay extra attention to them. Moisturize them after every wash with a quality cream.

A Gentle Step

Even though your feet are protected from the cold, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t provide them with the same moisturizing care. After every bath, apply a body moisturizer on your feet and surprise them with a massage. This way you’ll boost your circulation and relax at the same time.

Once a week prepare a warm bath and treatment for your feet and – yourself!

A Smooth Kiss

Winter is the season of holidays, family reunions, romance and love. So prepare yourself for lots of kisses, especially if you have grandkids coming over for Christmas. Use a lip balm to protect and soften your lips and a lipstick with additional moisturizing effect to keep the balance.

Dry skin is one of the biggest challenges for women over 60 and cold weather doesn’t help at all. You need to be even more persistent in hydrating, not only with cosmetic products, but also with drinking lots of water and maintaining healthy nutrition. This is not just good for your skin, but for your overall health as well.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

What steps do you take to care for your skin in winter? What dry skin products or moisturizers do you love to use? Please share your thoughts – and any tips! – in the comments section below.

Last Chance: I Tested ‘The Holy Grail of Acne Serums’ & It Cleared Up My Face in a Week—Get It For 30% Off

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

If you have acneic skin, I’m sure you know how annoying it is when yet another brand touts yet another miracle product that’ll help treat your bumps and zits overnight. Trust me, I’m on the same boat. I started getting acne when I was quite literally 11 years old (Thank you, genetics!! Thank you, puberty!!) and have had to deal with it ever since. Even after testing Spironolactone and going on Accutane for half a year, I’ve still struggled with flares of cystic pimples, whiteheads and clogged pores. So I want you to trust me when I say that I’ve found a serum that actually genuinely works with my skin.

It’s from Peace Out Skincare, that TikTok-loved brand responsible for those impressively gross pore strips and the dark spot treatment serum that works overnight—I tried that, too—and it helped combat and treat an extremely bad cystic flare in just over a week.

I started using this serum once a night for a couple of days to test how it would work with my skin. Those of you with sensitive skin like me know that acne treatments can sometimes worsen your skin issues by overly drying out your skin and stripping it of all those essential oils. This one didn’t do that—I kept my same routine of a gentle exfoliating cleanser and CeraVe moisturizer.

After doing that trial run, I started adding the serum to my morning routine (same as night, but with vitamin C serum and SPF as well), and without even thinking about it, a few days went by and a few terrible cysts were gone. Not to mention, the normal zits and bumps went away, too.

I know a bunch of brands tout success like this, but I genuinely mean that this acne serum worked wonders on my skin. It’s been about a month since starting to use this twice a day and my skin looks so much better than before. My boyfriend has noticed, my friends have noticed and my Zoom screen has noticed.

What’s more, you can get this beloved acne serum for 30 percent off + free shipping (along with the rest of Peace Out’s products) for the brand’s Cyber Monday sale. All you have to do is add it to your virtual cart and the price drop will show up immediately—but act fast, because this deal expires tomorrow.

Peace Out Acne Serum

This treatment has not only helped get rid of these bumps but also has helped get rid of scarring. See, I’m a skin-picker, and when there’s something juicy on my face, I can’t function until I get it out. This obviously is not a good thing to do since it leads to annoying scars, but I can’t help myself. Well, since this serum stops those big boy zits from surfacing, I no longer have something to pick at. I’m touching my face so much less often and my skin is living in tranquility.

The serum itself is made with salicylic acid, niacinamide, zinc and vitamin C. Salicylic acid is great for sucking up gunk from our pores and preventing future oil and skin build-up, while zinc and niacinamide help brighten dark spots and prevent the buildup of sebum. Vitamin C, as we know, is a heavy hitter for color correcting and zapping zits. This foursome works together to form a truly effective, yet surprisingly gentle acne serum that acts fast.

In fact, a consumer study found that 97 percent of users said their skin looked clearer after using the serum for just one single week. I can obviously attest to this, but other reviewers have, too. Just check out the before and after photos.

“My skin has completely changed since I started using this! My pores are smaller, skin is clearer, and I finally have radiant and even skin tone,” wrote one five-star reviewer. “So amazing!”

Another called it the ‘Holy Grail of serums‘ adding that: “I LOVE this serum. First, the smell is amazing. The product is very smooth and leaves your skin super soft. I feel my skin as a more even texture. I wear this under my makeup. I work at a hospital so breakouts have been bad since Covid started. I have seen a reduction for sure. I also used it after I wash my face at night. I am slowly seeing results and will be buying the bigger bottle for sure.

If you’ve ever struggled with acne, or simply want to prevent any future bumps from arising, this is the one product you can depend on. Trust me, I’ve practically tried them all.
