How to Grow Resilience and Cut Stress Eating for Successful Women over 60

grow resilience cut stress eating

You’ve accomplished a lot in your life. You can do anything you set your mind to. But there is just one area where you constantly struggle, and hope nobody notices: your eating habits.

A successful woman shared with me recently: “My biggest struggle is knowing the healthy choices but choosing unhealthy food to overeat. I find it difficult to stop eating once I start.”

If you are a woman over 60 struggling with eating, especially when stressed, you aren’t alone, it’s not your fault and there is hope.

Why Successful Women Over 60 Struggle with Stress Eating

Stress eating is a form of emotional eating where you use food to numb and soothe the discomfort of stress. There’s a good reason to do it – it works! When you eat, your brain secretes feel-good chemicals that allow you to get a momentary break from the hard things in life.

Unfortunately, the solution to eating struggles often makes the urge to indulge worse.

All or Nothing Dieting Reduces Your Resilience to Stress

All or Nothing Dieting, where you either have to eat “perfectly” or think “what’s the point?” is the typical solution to solving eating struggles.

And it rarely works, as 80-98% of diets fail depending on the research you are reviewing.

All or Nothing Dieting

  • Reduces your resilience to stress by increasing stress hormones and creating anxiety with All or Nothing thinking patterns.
  • Disconnects you from your physical feelings of hunger and fullness, along with your emotional needs as it takes away your best coping mechanism: food.
  • Results in knowing what to eat and not eating it… Feeling out of control and unable to trust yourself around food.

You Can Overcome All or Nothing Dieting and Increase Resilience by Cultivating the Courage to Trust

Cultivating the Courage to Trust is the answer to heal the impact of All or Nothing Dieting and stress eating so you can make the consistently healthy choices you want to make for yourself.

The Courage to Trust that:

  • Food isn’t the problem (and neither are you).
  • You can hear and respond to the cues your body is giving you, instead of eating to numb or restricting for control.
  • You can mindfully indulge AND consistently make nourishing choices.
  • You are worthy of care and love, just as you are, even while pursuing weight loss.

If you need help cultivating the Courage to Trust to solve your eating struggles, download my free audio guide.”

4 Ways to Grow Resilience and Cut Stress Eating with the Courage to Trust Method

#1: Calm the Nervous System

By employing strategies to calm the nervous system, you can reduce cravings and find the mental bandwidth to examine and heal the impact of All or Nothing Dieting so you can begin to trust yourself around food.

I recommend choosing any stress management strategy that works well for you and that you can commit to regularly. It doesn’t have to be perfect (this isn’t All or Nothing!), and yet you will get the most benefit from regular practice.

My clients have had success with using the Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping) as well as breathing practices and meditation.

#2: Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is well studied for its ability to increase resiliency. The most simplistic definition would be a type of self-kindness that recognizes your suffering is valid and that you aren’t alone.

Self-compassion relating to food struggles is most powerful when applied to your self-talk. After you overeat or indulge, how do you speak to yourself? Try replacing mean comments with something you might say to a friend who is struggling with eating.

#3: Listening to Self

Identifying and caring for your needs is an excellent way to increase resilience to stress.

Try setting a calendar reminder to check in with yourself during the day and asking, “what do I need right now?” If the answer is chocolate, go deeper. Is there an emotional need that chocolate is solving for you?

#4: Focus on Metabolism-Boosting Healthy Eating Without Dieting

You can support your body’s metabolism and resilience by adding in a few key habits.

Research shows that “dietary diversity” or eating a wide variety of foods may support greater resilience to stress.

Additionally, researchers identified that the Mediterranean style of eating can increase resilience due to its rich dietary diversity and large amount of foods high in antioxidant plant compounds like fruits, veggies, legumes and whole grains.

So, don’t fall into the All or Nothing Dieting trap, start small by identifying one vegetable you enjoy but haven’t had in a while and incorporate it into your meals this week. What a great way to snack!

Let’s Have a Conversation:

Have you considered your eating mindset? Are you stressed out most of the time when you reach out for a snack? Can you identify your feelings and choose differently? What would it take you to do that?

TikTok Discovered The Easiest Way to Achieve Perfect Heatless Curls—& We Found the Best Ones to Shop

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, STYLECASTER may receive an affiliate commission.

News flash: Heating up your hair too frequently is a big no-no. Hot temperatures from blow dryers, curling irons and flat irons can cause some serious damage to your hair’s cuticles and proteins. While your hair may look nice at first from the heated treatments, over time, you may realize that the only solution to repair your fried locks is to chop them off. Fortunately, there’s a better, safer option to achieve bouncy, voluminous curls without the heat, and it’s been all the rage on TikTok

Hair gurus and influencers alike have been showing off their best recommendations for getting beautiful curls without any heat. From viral satin curling rods from Kitsch to the Lululemon leggings hack, some are even posting how to get an “airplane blowout” so you arrive at your destination looking your best.

There are so many products out there to choose from, and we know it can be pretty overwhelming to determine which ones will work best for your hair. Fortunately for you, we’ve scoured the Internet to figure out which products are most highly rated so you can shop with ease. Trust us—your hair will thank you.

The brand is also women-owned, environmentally conscious and Climate Neutral Certified.

Reviewers love it too, with one writing, “I’ve been using the Tuvi for about a month and it drys hair just as quickly without the extra heat. My hair is much softer and breakage is way less.”

What Does Being a Trailblazer After 60 Mean to You?

being a trailblazer

Who or what is a trailblazer?

Is it someone who takes inspired action on new opportunities before anyone else?

Or is a trailblazer someone who paves a new path to love, happiness, and fulfillment by not conforming to what others say they can be or do after 60?

In part two of this five-part series for Sixty and Me readers, we are going to answer these questions and more.

This article, and the accompanying video, focuses on the first step of the “4 Steps to Blaze a New Path for Yourself After 60”.

STEP 1: Get Clear on What a Trailblazer Means for You

A Catalyst for Change

Everything in life changes. In fact, change is an immutable law of nature. We know this, but most fight against it.

Therefore, to blaze a new path for yourself after 60 means you need to be a catalyst for change.

But what kind of change?

Traditionally, trailblazers have been defined as someone who radically transforms cultures, industries, or the world itself.

What about radical, inner transformation?

What if you can blaze a new path to more love, happiness, and fulfillment after 60 by redefining what the status quo of your life is?

Not on the terms of what others think. But on your own terms.

Where does this take place? Inside you.

Specifically, it unfolds through the connection of your mind and heart.

It’s About Loving More of Yourself

Being a trailblazer in your life comes down to how willing you are to love yourself so much that you no longer choose to submit to the temptation of your limiting beliefs.

This also includes not defining your self-worth or being influenced by other people’s limiting beliefs.

Why is this so important?

Because you cannot blaze a new, more fulfilling path for yourself if you attempt to do so with limiting beliefs and behaviors that no longer serve your best interests.

What does loving more of yourself look and feel like at this stage of your life?

It looks like your true, authentic self. And it feels like the unconditional love and joy you have been seeking.

How do you accomplish something that may seem unattainable?

By loving more of who you are today. For the more you love who you are the more authentic you allow yourself to be.

Your Authentic Self

Becoming more comfortable with your true, authentic self is reflected in your life in a lot of different ways. None more empowering than accepting life’s obstacles and their solutions come from within you.

This doesn’t mean you won’t find yourself triggered by the outside world. Nor does it mean you will not seek help from others or even desire a romantic union. It means you won’t be giving away your power to other people or allow outside circumstances to dictate who you are.

Life may not always turn out as you wish, but life can be turned in your favor simply by choosing to perceive it from a new, healthier perspective.

This all comes down to taking one hundred percent responsibility for your well-being. For how else can you be authentic if you are blaming others for how you feel?

Being responsible for your emotional well-being is a reflection of becoming more of your authentic self. And this comes back to self-love.

One very specific way this plays out in the lives of many after 60, particularly women, is instead of following the traditional path of pleasing others before yourself, you now put yourself front and center.

A Relic of a Bygone Era

Most women of our generation were raised and educated to tend to the needs of everyone else at the exclusion of our own needs. To sneak in a moment of self-care was treated more like a luxury than a necessity for our well-being.

Even when we did indulge in some form of self-love and self-care, how guilty or self-conscious did we feel?

No sooner than we took time for ourselves, most of us were right back at the grind, seeking to please everyone in the hopes we would be seen as worthy of their love.

People Pleasing Is a Relic of a Bygone Era

Flipping the narrative on people pleasing is a central part of being a trailblazer.

It doesn’t mean you become cold and aloof. It means you are establishing healthy boundaries, while being loving and kind to others.

Healthy Boundaries

Healthy boundaries are essential to being a trailblazer in your life after sixty.

Here are three effective ways to begin setting healthy boundaries:

  1. Take time to review specific relationships where you say “yes” to doing things for others when you really want to say “no.”
  2. Identify where you can begin taking more time for yourself.
  3. Visualize and journal how will you use this time to replenish your mind and body with rejuvenated energy.

Defining what a trailblazer is for you after 60 is just the first step.

The next step is going inward to discover who your true, authentic self is and get clear on what new path you desire to create. We will focus on this in the next article and video of our five-part series.

In the meantime, join me in the video where I will share additional insights and also guide you through seven journal prompts to help you integrate what you are learning.

Let’s Have a Conversation:

What does being a trailblazer mean to you? Can you be a trailblazer? In what way are you already making steps toward your authentic self?
