When you are having anxiety or you are worrying excessively, days and nights become fretful and wearisome. Chaotic thoughts and feelings disrupt any sense of calm or hope. Staying preoccupied and distracted creates frustration and overwhelm. All this results in sleepless nights and an inability to think clearly. This cycle of worry takes its toll physically, emotionally, and mentally.

What If You Could Be Anxiety Free?

It’s possible to learn how to manage anxiety and worry. When you do, life is calmer and more relaxed. It’s easier to process things rationally rather than from a place of overwhelm. Rest and sleep come more easily without an ever-present sense of foreboding and dread. You can truly become anxiety free.

How do I know that?

I’ve been a hot mess myself!

About 11 years ago this was my life. I was smack dab in the middle of an emotional nightmare. I wasn’t sleeping. Disturbing relational and legal problems surfaced in my family. I was tied in knots. I was obsessed with scary, unsettling thoughts. Visits to my doctor increased. Xanax became a calming friend. To say the least, I was a major mess. It seemed like this nightmare would never end.

Months later, as this crisis shifted into low gear, I declared, “I’m not living like this anymore!” The help I found prompted a 180-degree shift in my way of managing stress and worry. I learned how to become free from the tyranny of anxious thoughts.

You might say I became immune to excessive worry and fear. I am thriving and constantly learning more about living an anxiety free life. The time and effort were worth it for me. After overcoming anxiety, I became a certified anxiety coach so I could help other women do the same thing.

Can You Stop Worrying?

Yes, you can! You can calm down anxiety with statements like, “Sorry, I don’t have time for you (anxiety) now!” and mean it.

You can stop worrying by following these 3 steps.

Step 1: Identify the Fear

Identify the root of the fear causing your worry. Uncovering the cause of the fear might be challenging but it can help you start living a calmer life.

Begin by asking yourself questions like these:

  • What stories am I telling myself?
  • What worst case scenarios am I imagining?
  • What’s my inner critic got to say about this?
  • What’s really driving this fear?

Step 2: Reframe Negative Thoughts into Positive Thoughts

Intentionally shift from old thought patterns to new thought patterns. Your mind will calm down as you replace the negatives with positives. This is about a radical change in thinking patterns. Practicing calming strategies tones down anxiety. You will experience less overwhelm and out-of-control thinking.

Step 3: Create a Plan for Using Stress Reducing Strategies

Develop a plan to keep practicing daily stress reducing strategies. Create new habits to reverse guilt producing and fear generating patterns of thinking. In the process, self-awareness grows and helps reduce anxiety and worry. This kind of mindfulness is life-giving. You will experience a sense of security knowing you have a routine and backup blueprint for dealing with anxious thoughts.

One Woman’s Story

One of my clients is a 62-year-old woman who has just been diagnosed with a scary, debilitating illness. Troublesome, frightening thoughts were pouring into her mind. The future felt overwhelming and frightening.

I helped her with tools to settle anxious questions and thoughts. She is beginning to understand what causes anxiety. She’s learning practical ways to manage worry. She’s starting to let go of the worry and fear. She is becoming anxiety free.

The Grandmother’s Rules of Procedure (GRP)

I was sitting in a Starbucks with a friend. My friend and I are grandmothers. To say this is a role we treasure would be an understatement. As we were sipping and chatting, a mutual friend popped in for a caffein infusion after having been denied one during an early morning blood test fast.

Sharon is a new grandmother to a six-week-old baby girl. Sharon had just returned from a trip to Denver to visit her precious miracle (and her daughter and son-in-law.) We exchanged newborn anecdotes and the complications of new relationships as grandparents and parents strive to figure out roles in the early days of a baby’s life.

Postpartum Depression Is Real

Postpartum depression is real. I recounted how after two weeks at home alone with my newborn daughter, my then husband came home to find me sitting on the sofa drinking a beer, eating a Snicker’s bar, and smoking a cigarette as my daughter fussed in her crib. “I don’t think I’m cut out for this,” I wailed. 

Grandparents Can Shine a Light for Their Families

Grandparents, at least the non-judgmental ones, can really be a help. Even if parts of us are dimming, grandparents are perfectly positioned to shine a light for their families, even if it’s only a flashlight.

Parenting is fraught with responsibility and anxiety. Once men and women assume that parental yoke of responsibility, they become nearsighted, often able to see only three feet in front of them. But grandparents have the luxury of an aerial view.

“He’ll be fine,” we reassure them.

“She will get the hang of nursing and so will you. It is so worth it.”

“Kids are resilient. He won’t remember this slight next week.”

“She’s just acting out because of the new baby.”

“Don’t worry – she’s a lovely girl and will find her own group of friends in school who will appreciate her.” 

The Grandparent POV

The grandparent’s experience, if offered without judgement, can guide their child-parent out of the darkness.

It’s a valuable role. My mother died when my daughter was three and my son was nine months, so they never really knew her. My first mother-in-law violated many of the Grandmother Rules of Procedure guidelines. I invited Eloise to stay in my home following the birth of my daughter, and I regretted that decision within hours. In hindsight, I recognize her own anxieties permeated every criticism.

“You shouldn’t nurse her! She’s not gaining weight. She’s not getting enough nourishment.” 

Breastfeeding was hard enough but having someone standing over my shoulder admonishing me was brutal.

“I think David has an eating disorder!” 

My son was 10 at the time. He was and remains a picky eater. I didn’t need her fears thrust in my face; I had enough of my own. I needed her to comfort me, to tell me everything was going to be okay, to hold my baby when I was sleep-deprived from getting up three times each night – not tell me what I was doing wrong.

A Formula for Grandparenting

I concocted a Grandmother’s Rules of Procedure in my book, Be Brave. Lose the Beige! Finding Your Sass After Sixty. Here are a few of those rules you might already know:

  • Shine a light for your kids and provide a perspective on parenting;
  • Be useful;
  • Lightly skirt parental rules/mandates/be indulgent;
  • Don’t play the guilt/victim card with your kids or grandchildren;
  • Keep your mouth shut. Keep your own anxieties and opinions to yourself or share them with friends similarly situated; and last, but far from least,
  • Be an advocate for yourself because grandmothering can be taxing on the body.

I Swear I Am Skinnier in One Day

Gaining and losing weight has been a battle for me from my earliest memories.

I inherited my maternal grandparents’ genes, Polish through and through. Their stocky builds ensure a strong legacy of survival. My grandfather was a baker, not like we see now on Cake Wars and other “fluffy” baking shows.

He worked 12-hour days, starting at 2 a.m., and lifted 50-pound sacks of flour, sugar, and dry milk. Schlepped pounds and pounds of butter, nuts, and chocolate. Back-breaking work, mixing ingredients, pouring batter into molds, leaning over to roll out and decorate cookies.

My grandmother was always with an apron, cooking or sewing, bent over a large soup pot, a frying pan, or with a garment she was mending with a needle and thread. Suffice it to say, I was never a stick figure, I wasn’t built that way.

I learned to dance, literally, Zumba, Powerhouse, and Step. Anything for fat burning. The real dance was one step forward and one step back. One day I would eat what I wanted. The next, not eat what I wanted. Repeat. Rinse. Repeat. Exercising faithfully to keep the muscles moving, the joints greased and the weight down.

A Lot of the Same

This kind of worked for me – through high school and college, my sex and the City years, the child-raising, the doing my chores, and finally into retirement. There were thicker years and thinner years. I weathered my ups and downs like a reverse stock market roller-coaster ride, fretting through upturns, holding on for the sunny side, the thin years.

Well after the pandemic, I hit a wall. After a heartbreaking breakup I ate myself through my emotions. Now, in my case, it was better than downing double martinis, yet, there I was at 30 pounds to lose against my almost 5-foot frame, and the pounds were still mounting.

It’s never a good day to start a healthy eating plan (we abandoned the word diet years ago). Every day I said, “Today will be the day.” Then a bagel crossed my path, a pasta special for lunch, and some French fries made their way next to my grilled fish, and it was only a hop, skip and a jump to pie with whipped cream for dessert. And even my “big” clothes weren’t so big anymore.

Yesterday, I Turned a Corner

Yesterday was Day 1, which included three healthy right-sized meals, 64 ounces of water, and no refined sugar or carbohydrates. And the truth is, I feel skinnier today. Actually, I am skinnier today. How do I know that? How do I know that one day can make a difference? Well, I’ll tell you.

I Took My Power Back

Taking power back is not like a scene from a movie between two Greek gods or witches with thunderbolts, flying and lightning zapping each other. Taking my power back means I understood I had a choice.

It was my choice to eat the bagel and then complain when my pants weren’t pulling up easily. It was my choice to continue to go to the pantry for the bag of cookies, the salty snacks, or the refrigerator to eat the leftovers and an extra dessert right after a meal.

It was my choice to sit through the discomfort of wanting to eat, to kill the boredom, to just stuff my feelings down. Taking my power back means that, in the moment, I chose to serve my long-term goal, lose a few pounds, and be able to swiftly pull my pants on.

I am skinnier today, without the weight of worrying about not doing anything about the weight. I am making better choices today.

I Almost Peed in My Pants Several Times

Unfortunately, at this age, we all know the muscles don’t work as strongly as they once did. But yesterday was extraordinary. Drinking the full eight ounces, eight glasses of water, I was racing to the bathroom every 20 minutes, literally not to pee in my pants. The water was cleansing me, going through me, and I woke up less bloated, less inflated, just less.

I am skinnier today because drinking all that water helps me to burn more calories. The water started shrinking me.

There Was More Time in the Day

There was more time in my day because I had more energy. Studies show that drinking more water regulates your metabolism, converting the less food eaten into more energy. Besides I didn’t waste my usual tons of emotional energy worrying whether my pants would fit, what I should eat, what else I could eat, and will I run out of whipped cream.

I am skinnier today because I focused on content, on slowing down, not on the food.

I Stopped Focusing on How I Looked

Yesterday, I put on my most comfortable pants. Loudly printed stretchy bell bottoms with hot pink, orange, and rust swirls, and flowers against a black background. They felt good. And because I felt good, I looked good.

I am skinnier today because I lifted the weight of having to have the perfect look and outfit. I wore what felt good and that made me stand up straighter and smile louder.

I Realized I Love Myself

It’s a funny thing, I look exactly like my grandma. And I loved her; thin or fat I only saw Grandma. I look at myself that way. It does help that at this age I look exactly like her – my curvy shape, the small gap between my front teeth, the color of her hair, and the big smile she wielded, that I catch in reflective surfaces as I walk by. I loved her, no matter her size, her choice of apron, or her hairstyle.

I am skinnier today because I love myself no matter my size.

What’s Next

Like most of life, today’s dance is staying on the path. Making the choices that propel me toward peace, serenity, and comfort. For today that means three healthy meals and 64 ounces of water to nourish my body. And running to pee is just a little bit more exercise.
