Whether youâre in your late 50s or well into your 60s, keeping your muscles strong and your balance steady can make all the difference in how you feel every day. If youâve been looking for a way to stay fit, feel energized, and live your life to the fullest, itâs time to prioritize strength and balance.
Why Strength and Balance Matter More Than Ever
When we talk about fitness for women over 55, itâs essential to focus on two key areas: strength and balance. Hereâs why:
Strength Training
As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, a process called sarcopenia. This can make it harder to perform everyday activities like carrying groceries, lifting grandchildren, or even getting up from a chair.
By incorporating strength training into your routine, you can combat this muscle loss, improve your bone density, reduce aches and pains in your joints by creating more strength and less pressure on the joints, and feel more capable in your daily life. Strength training helps you to stay active, involved in your community, and independent. It is recommended to add strength training exercises two to three times a week, you can get a good workout in 10-45 minutes.

Balance
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in older adults. Improved balance can prevent falls, reduce the risk of injury, and help you feel more confident when moving around. Losing your balance and having a fall can happen so fast. Itâs essential to train our balance every day. Whether youâre walking down stairs, bending to tie your shoes, or simply standing up, balance plays a critical role in ensuring you stay safe and active.

The advantages of strength and balance training go far beyond just preventing injuries. Here are some of the key benefits that come with regular exercise in your 50s and beyond:

Regular exercise helps keep your joints and muscles flexible, reducing stiffness and increasing your range of motion. I canât tell you how often I hear my clients tell me they are waking up with less aches and pains as they have added a regular exercise routine.
Better Mental Health
Exercise has been proven to boost mood, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. When the world feels out of control, giving yourself 10 to 20 minutes of exercise to focus on your health, boost your endorphins, and focus on you is one of the best things you can do.
Increased Confidence
When you feel stronger and more balanced, youâre more likely to take on new challenges, whether itâs trying a new activity, feeling more confident in your clothes, or simply saying yes to an activity you might have been hesitant about before.
Longer Independence
Being physically strong and balanced helps you maintain your independence longer, allowing you to continue doing the things you love without relying on others and thatâs one of the most important goals my clients have!

Donât Let Negative Self-Talk Tank Your Dreams

A friend and I were enjoying a pleasant afternoon walk through the local park after having had lunch together. We happened upon what must have been an art class. Half a dozen young people, each at an easel, were valiantly painting the nature scene in front of them, with varying degrees of success. Their teacher walked around to each, pointing out one thing or another.
My friend sighed and muttered âif onlyâ under her breath, as we turned to walk on. âIf only â what?â I asked.
âWell, I would love to paint, but thatâs never gonna happen.â
âWhy not?â
âCome on, you know me, Iâm not artistic. Iâm a computer geek. Iâve been writing code for the past 20 years, thatâs all I know. Algorithms, that sort of thing. Iâve never even played an instrument.â
âSo?â
âLike Iâm gonna suddenly discover an artistic vocation at 65? Yeah, right. So, howâs the family?â
It was my turn to sigh because I knew that my friendâs view of herself was the only thing standing in the way of her undertaking an artistic endeavor, with all the potential joy it could bring her.
How We Speak to Ourselves Matters
While my friend was talking, I was reminded of the powerful way in which Seun Adebiyi transformed his experience as an Olympic hopeful, unexpectedly diagnosed with lymphoma and leukemia. He absolutely refused to consider himself, as did his doctors, as âa cancer patientâ but rather thought of himself as âan Olympic hopeful who just happened to be overcoming cancer.â What a marvelously life-affirming perspective. And yes, he successfully recovered and went on to a fulfilling career.
Psychological research supports the tremendous impact of how we view and therefore speak to ourselves about ourselves. Positive self-talk has been shown to be of great benefit in everything from losing weight to combatting depression to achieving excellence in sports and more. My friend was defeating her dream of painting before she even got near a paintbrush just by how she viewed herself: âOnce a geek, always a geek.â
Learning The Tango
Victoria Zaragoza-Martinez, at 79, is having more fun than she ever imagined possible, dancing Argentine Tango, specifically the âMilongaâ form of Tango. Victoria didnât start as a Tango dancer. She was a lot closer to my friendâs âgeekâ description, having been a teacher and a support for her single Mom, and later a translator as well.
Victoria had danced some of the Spanish traditional dances as a young person, being originally from Spain, but then between school and work, that stopped. But once Victoria retired, she realized something was missing from her life, and after some false starts, found herself taking Tango lessons. It took her a while to muster up the courage to attend social dances â what if she couldnât follow the steps? What if no one chose to dance with her? Yet Victoria persisted and now attends up to five Milonga social dances a month. It has become her passion, her joy.
Victoria could never have discovered the Tango dancer within her if sheâd told herself what we so often say, âIâm too old,â or âIâve never done anything like thatâ or her version of geek: âOnce a teacher, translator, always a teacher, translator.â On the contrary, Victoria had to be open to the idea that anything is possible and be willing to give it a try. Is she a world-class Tango dancer? Probably not. Does that matter? Absolutely not. Is Victoria having a blast? Absolutely yes and that is what matters.
Donât let what you say to yourself about yourself limit your life. You can be whatever you want if you accept the infinite number of ways that it may come to you and as long as your goal is to increase happiness in your life and not to accumulate trophies or plaques. And as long as you let your chosen activity bring you a measure of joy, then who knows?
And yes, my friend is now painting. Hesitantly, unsure of herself, but with a grin that tells me, âYup, sheâs happy!â
