The world has changed so much since we were born, and there has never been a better time for women over 60 to be anything they want to be. The possibilities are endless: student, social media influencer, interior designer, model, educator, entrepreneur, athlete, traveller, linguist, overseas volunteer, inventor… Often the only limitation is what we believe we can do. You will never be as young again as you are in this very moment, so perhaps today is the day to build that life you always dreamed of.
Think About Where You Want to Be in 10 Years
Anything can happen in the next 10 years, but that is the same for a 30-year-old as it is for a 60- or 70-year-old. Making a plan for the next 10 years doesn’t mean it has to be set in stone; just something you hope will happen. So, who would you like ‘You’ to be? Think about your passions, the things you loved when you were younger that, because of one thing or another, never happened.
Maybe you cut your career short to have a family or never finished college. Perhaps you might consider going to university (you can still get funding for degrees in the UK if you are over 60). Or you could take up exercise or a sport, there have been some very successful athletes who didn’t start until they were 60. Maybe the Arts is more your sort of thing? You could be a photographer, painter, potter, sculptor, jeweller, or clothes designer. Just think about something you absolutely love to do and take the plunge 🙂
Expand Your Horizons
There are so many interesting things to do and, whatever your situation, there will be something that expands your horizons. You not only learn new things, gain skills, find a purpose, develop your interests, but you may meet new people which can change your whole life.
Think about that book you always wanted to write, that little beach in Greece you dream of visiting, learning to sing or dance, or perhaps you would like to be an actor or put on a stage play. Think big, often the only thing preventing you from doing something is your own limiting beliefs.
Be Healthier
In our 60s we might still live for another 30 or even 40 years. That time will be so much more enjoyable if you are free from pain, mobile and active. Starting a plan today could help make that possible. It doesn’t have to be a huge change; often little changes are best because they are sustainable. Walk a little further, eat a little healthier, no smoking, perhaps alcohol in moderation.
As important as it is to keep your body healthy, it is also vital to keep your mind healthy, especially as we age. Go for walks in nature, laugh, dance, sing, worry less, let go of things. Exercise your mind with crosswords or puzzles, read as many books as you can, learn something new. Most importantly, do whatever makes you happy.
Forgive
When someone hurts you, it is easy to hold on to the pain. Usually, the only person that is hurting is you. The other person may be having the best day of their life while you are at home thinking how awful they have treated you. Forgiving them doesn’t mean you are weak, or that you will let them hurt you again. It means you care for your own well-being and happiness.
Be You
After you are born, you have one job in this life, and that is to take care of You. No one else is going to do that 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s up to you.
Love yourself, you are pretty awesome after all. Be authentic, you have as much right to live your life your way, as anyone else. Be gentle on yourself, of course there are things you have to do, but don’t be so hard on yourself when things don’t go according to plan. Forgive yourself, none of us is perfect. Be happy. Life is full of twists and turns, and we may not be happy every single moment of our lives. But in times of sadness, loss or pain, make your way back to happiness. It is where you belong :).
