Instagram – The Most Surprising Place to Find Role Models

Instagram – The Most Surprising Place to Find Role Models

We all need role models throughout our lives. As we get older, role models can be even more important.

Role models help us see our own potential. They can remind us that lots of older people are enjoying interesting, exciting, healthy lives. They remind us that getting older doesn’t have to make us miserable and invisible.

Where do we find our role models as we get older? My favourite place is Instagram. That may surprise you because most people associate Instagram with young people.

Instagram influencers are often assumed to be under 40, impossibly beautiful, impossibly glamourous, and leading amazing lives. Yet there are lots of older women on Instagram that would make amazing role models for you. The BBC says:

“While it’s true that almost three-quarters of Instagram influencers are thought to be under-35 (with 42% aged 18-24), that doesn’t mean there isn’t space for these age-defying internet icons. “

Here are some you might enjoy following!

This lady’s bio says “stealing ur man since 1928!!” She has 3.8 million followers, making it clear that people of all ages find her posts amusing and entertaining.

She has an amazing fur-decked mobility scooter, and clearly loves bright neon colours – pink, yellow, and green. This is no retiring older person. She is definitely highly visible and looks like she is having the time of her life.

Sarah Jane Adams is a stylish dresser in a range of amazing prints. She looks stunning in her well-crafted outfits and has 190,000 followers. I can imagine that people definitely look at her when she’s out and about.

@iris.apfel

Iris Apfel says, “More is more & less is a bore.” Iris wears everything with pride, including her over-size collection of specs. No wonder she has 1.4 million followers. Many people would take their glasses off for their Instagram pics, but Iris makes a real feature of them.

It’s not just ladies who show flare and style. Lance Walsh is a London street vendor. He has a great line in men’s wear. He looks stylish, but also looks like he hasn’t thought about what he is going to wear – a difficult combination to pull off.

Joan Macdonald is an amazing woman, who says: “You can’t turn back the clock but you can wind it up again!”

If you want to lose weight and get fit take a look at Joan’s Instagram posts. As well as her amazing pics, she offers wise words. On one of her posts she writes:

“My biggest advice to all of you trying to make a big change is: JUST DON’T QUIT! 💪 (…) If I could persuade you all to do it for your own health and well-being, to invest in your strength and flexibility so that you can really enjoy being in your own body, then I will be a happy woman.”

Let’s talk about gym style, something I never would have considered to be important even just two years ago… When I first started out on my transformation journey, I hated trying on clothes, and in fact most of my clothes barely fit me any more so I had just a few bottoms and tops to choose from. Baggy shorts and over-sized t-shirts in boring colors were my go-to. I didn’t love myself back then and that’s how I dressed myself. I used to think 1) I didn’t deserve beautiful clothes and 2) nothing nice would fit me anyway, especially at my age. It wasn’t until my daughter insisted that I buy some new workout clothes and took me shopping at @forever21 that I understood that that mindset wasn’t working for me. When I saw myself in flattering clothes in cute colors, I could see that my inner dialogue had to go. I actually had muscles! I actually had a good shape taking form! I felt so good inside to see that in those new clothes. 💛Even though it might seem like something superficial like clothing can’t have a big impact on how we see ourselves it absolutely can my dears! If I can learn that lesson in my seventies you can too. Now you won’t catch me heading to the gym (or my living room as the case may be 😅) without taking the time to chose a favorite outfit. My daughter tells her clients, “you have to invest the same love and compassion for yourself at the START of your transformation that would to your own daughter if she was in your shoes. You would encourage her, compliment her on her successes no matter how small, and you would treat her to some workout clothes that were flattering, wouldn’t you? So learn to do that for yourself, and replace that negative inner dialogue with a positive one”. Now I’m sharing this with you. 💕 Please don’t wait til you’re “perfect” to take pride in yourself. You have to already see your perfection, your effort and your courage today. Love yourself enough to change, and show yourself that love daily. On the right I’m wearing one of my favorite outfits by @womensbest . If you have any questions please ask below, and share your favorite gym-wear brands with each other! With Love Joan 💗 . #womenbest #womensbestwear

@geoffreywalk

Now for something completely different. Pauline and Geoffrey Walk have a joint account on Instagram. They say: “Old English couple living In faith together🙏🙏since Dec 15th 1951,” and they have 364,000 followers.

Many of their posts are very low key and full of details about their life in the 40s or 50s. For example, there is one post about Pauline’s homemade bread and butter pudding. In the comment, Geoffrey has written: “This recipe was used during the rationing period in our young lives.”

@thrivingjane

Although I don’t have the legions of followers that these others do, I like to inspire people too. I post videos of me in the gym and pictures of my favorite vegan foods. Lately, I’ve taken to posting a silly joke each day to cheer us up with all that’s going on in the world.

I’ve been on Instagram for around a year, and I’ve been surprised at how much joy it has bought me. People often make comments that my gym videos are inspiring.

Grannies tell me that they share my daily joke with a grandchild. People say my food always looks delicious. I’m being followed by people of all ages and from many different countries too. We exchange positive words of encouragement on each other’s posts.

Instagram Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

I hope I’ve convinced you that Instagram is a good place to look for role models. But if you don’t already have an Instagram account, this can feel scary.

If you want to follow any of the people I’ve suggested here, you can start an Instagram account without posting anything yourself. You can just follow other people.

If you do decide to post, you can make your account private. This means that only certain people on Instagram can see what you post. If anyone wants to see what you are posting, they have to ask to follow you, and you can always say no!

Or maybe, like me, you want to show your life on Instagram to encourage others.

Have you got a passion? Do you wish more people shared your passion? Do you think the world would be a better place if more people knew about how you live your life? Let’s have a discussion!

Dorinda Medley’s Metallic Striped Shirt

Dorinda Medley’s Metallic Striped Shirt at the Orchard

Real Housewives of New York Season 12 Episode 7 Fashion

Needless to say Dorinda Medley’s super cute metallic-threaded striped shirt that she wears to the orchard on this week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Upstate New York was definitely a cornfield maze for us to track down. However thankfully we were able to do it, so brb while we go off to celebrate by having just one (humungous) glass of wine. 🍷

5 Simple Exercises to Help You Increase Your Back Strength Without Hurting Your Back (Video)

5 Simple Exercises to Help You Increase Your Back Strength Without Hurting Your Back

Have you ever been told that your aches and pains can be fixed by strengthening your core? Did you try to do a bunch of abdominal exercises as a solution for low back pain?

Although the two solutions offered in the video above can be a part of the puzzle involving back, hip, and/or shoulder pain, we do not often hear about back exercises unless someone is talking about posture.

Posture or alignment are very important for your overall health. Yet another fantastic reason to work on your back strength is to help re-balance your muscular system and thus help promote a pain-free body.

I would like to share the 5 best at-home exercises to increase mobility and strength in your back.

Prone Cactus Arms

Come to lie on your tummy with your forehead resting on a towel. Place your arms straight out from your shoulders with a 90-degree bend at your elbows. Your hands are resting on the ground.

Inhale into the sides and back of your ribcage and exhale by pressing your pubic bone into the ground to help bring your pelvis into neutral.

Keeping that position, on your next breath lift only your hands off the ground. If that went well, lift both of your arms and hands off the ground and hold for 3 to 5 seconds. Repeat this exercise 5 to 8 times.

Bolstered Cactus Arms

This time you will lay prone on a yoga bolster or a stack of firm blankets. You will place your head just off the bolster. You may rest your head on a block or pillow or your hands for comfort.

Repeat the Cactus arm lift that you executed above while keeping your pubic bone pressed into the bolster as well as keeping your feet on the floor. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds. Repeat 5 to 8 times.

Floating Superman with a Bolster for Support

Utilize the same face down position on the bolster and the same pressing of the pubic bone into the bolster to stabilize yourself. The first stage of this exercise is to reach your arms out in front of you to the degree that is comfortable for your shoulders and hover the arms in the air for 3 to 5 seconds.

Notice if this tugs on your low back. If so, then re-try to lift with a bit more focus on pushing your pubic bone into the bolster. If you succeed without back issues, then proceed to the next step. Otherwise, continue to work on the superman arms.

Stage two is to add the legs in a lift or hover. You may want to test a very brief lift. If it is too much to lift your legs, it is very worthwhile to imagine you are going to lift your legs and hold.

This connection from your brain to your legs will activate your back muscles. Over time, you will find you are ready to lift your legs. Do this exercise 3 to 6 times.

The Challenge of Bolstered Swimming

This final exercise on the bolster is only appropriate if the superman exercise felt good for you – not necessarily easy, but doable. In swimming, you will start by keeping your feet on the ground while you experiment with reaching overhead as in superman.

This time you will flutter your arms as if they were slapping the water. You will wiggle and move a bit because your shoulders will be moving. If you are comfortable, you will then float your legs and flutter them as well for your next try. Flutter your arms and legs for short bursts 3 to 5 times.

Cobra with Boundaries Is Easier Than You Think

Begin flat on the floor with your hands just next to your breasts at your sides. You will be looking directly at the floor. Tuck your chin as if you were holding a lemon or lime between your chin and your neck. The tops of your feet will be resting on the floor and they will not lift.

Prepare by inhaling, and on your exhale press your pubic bone into the mat. On the next breath, energetically drag your hands back without moving them, and begin to lift your sternum off the ground. Do not look up. Keep the fruit under your chin for the entire exercise. Lower back down and find your set up again.

On this breath, imagine trying to draw your sternum forward and up the smallest amount. This is like thinking of a laser beam on your breast bone and trying to shine it towards the place where the wall ahead of you meets the floor. You may be able to move the laser beam up the wall a bit. That is all!

We are wanting to extend our thoracic spine and by nature, it does not have the amount of extension you think you see in a Yoga Journal cover photo. That is mostly head and lumbar flexion.

None of us need to practice those two movements repeatedly. Try making this modification if you are a yoga practitioner and see how you feel.

Tinsley Mortimer’s Olive Green Jacket

Tinsley Mortimer’s Olive Green Jacket at the Orchard

Real Housewives of New York Season 12 Episode 7 Fashion

Although Tinsley Mortimer’s olive green jacket is apparently a big fall staple in the south (we’ve previously reported on the brand’s jackets being worn by Southern Charm’s Naomie Olindo and Cameran Eubanks), Tins decided to bring the lewk to the Big Apple apple orchard on this week’s episode of RHONY. And considering there’s a 99% chance southern style queen Dale must own a couple too, well that just goes to show probably to Tinsley’s dismay that the apple doesn’t fall that far from the tree.

Clean Fragrances That Won’t Make Your Sinuses Go Haywire

If you’re like me and suffer from chronic sinus problems and seasonal allergies (…and for me, it’s all of the seasons—not just the spring) or have sensitive skin, you know that finding a signature scent that doesn’t cause a rash or make you feel straight-up sick can feel downright impossible. We’ve all been there: when you walk past someone who is wearing an obscene amount of perfume, the lingering whiff that follows their every move is utterly unbearable. And while this type of “encounter” can be obnoxious for anyone to deal with (especially if there’s a repeat offender at your office) it can actually make some people physically sick.

According to one study, nearly 30 percent who were polled reported sensitivity to fragrances. Many popular perfumes and colognes are chock full of harsh and allergy-irritating chemicals that can actually function as neurotoxins when absorbed through the skin’s pores. And sure, while this isn’t exactly healthy for anyone, it’s even more troubling for those who suffer from chronic allergies and sensitive skin.

Allergic reactions to fragrances are actually classified as “irritants,” rather than “allergens” (allergens would indicate the release of histamine inside the body). Fragrances can not only cause external skin rashes and hives, but they can also trigger a histamine-release response as well. A histamine-response basically usually comes in the form of a sneeze attack, incessant sniffles and downright feeling awful, as a means of our body attempting to attack the perceived threat. Some of the most common signs of an allergy to perfume include sneezing, headaches, difficulty breathing, stuffy or runny nose, while often times topical symptoms like redness, bumps, and rashes can form as a result.

If you do have this sensitivity to fragrance, opting for a formula free of common allergy-triggers like phthalates, parabens and sulfates will help reduce the risk of getting a rash or sparking an allergy flare-up. Fortunately, there are now plenty of clean and all-natural fragrances available. Here are some of my personal favorite perfumes that smell amazing, but won’t make you feel sick or itchy.
