Looking for a New Way to Exercise, Have Fun and Meet People? Become a Pickler!

Looking for a New Way to Exercise, Have Fun and Meet People Become a Pickler!

Even though boomers are known for setting trends, I’m a
little embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t heard about pickleball, which
arguably has become the hottest sports trend with the over-60 crowd.

“Picklers,” as they like to call themselves, are passionate
about the sport, and many swear that it has changed their lives for the better.

After learning more about pickleball and its benefits, I
can tell you that I am ready to join the ranks of the more than 3.3 million
“picklers,” the overwhelming majority of whom are over 55, in the United
States.

So what exactly is this sport that, according to the U.S.A.
Pickleball Association
, is played in all
50 states and has seen an almost 10 percent
growth in players over the past three years?

The Essence of Pickleball

Most people describe pickleball as a cross between tennis,
badminton, and ping pong with some elements of paddle tennis and racquetball
thrown in for good measure.

Much as with other racquet sports, the idea is to hit a
small, light plastic ball (similar to the familiar wiffle ball) across a net in
a way that your opponent will not be able to volley it back to you. Scoring is
similar to tennis.

The game is played either indoors or outdoors on a court
the size of a badminton court, which is perfect if you have limited motion or
joint problems since you don’t need to run as much or as far.

It can be played one-on-one (singles) or two-on-two
(doubles). The latter is especially popular among boomers for its inherent
social aspects as well as the reduced need for chasing after a shot.

And, while it definitely gives you a good workout, it
doesn’t require the same level of physical conditioning or athleticism as
tennis, golf, skiing, or other sports demand.

Pickleball also is not as expensive as other sports. A good
racquet costs between $50 and $150 and, should a player wish to join, a
year-long membership to the U.S.A. Pickleball Association is $20 a year, which
includes a variety of benefits.

Many locations, such as retirement communities, local
sports parks and sporting clubs offer pickleball courts, many for use with no
charge or a minimal fee. As of last count, there were over 15,000 courts in the U.S.

And, in case you’re wondering about where the game and its
quirky name came from, it was invented 55 years ago near Seattle by a group of
dads who were looking for something to keep their kids entertained during
summer vacation.

As far as the name, one story is that one dad’s family dog
would chase the ball when the kids were playing. And, you guessed it, his name
was Pickles.

Another version of the story is that the game’s combination
of elements from other sports reminded one of the dad’s wives of the pickle
boat in crew. Whichever version is true (perhaps both are), the name
“pickleball” stuck.

Pickleball Benefits for Boomers

In addition to being a lot of fun to play, pickleball
offers us boomers a combination of health, social, and emotional benefits that
are hard to find anywhere else. These include:

Higher Level of Muscle Activity

Increased muscle strength and
muscle tone are a given since you are running
and carrying your body weight around the court.

Stress Management

Since playing pickleball helps release endorphins, which
are the “feel good” chemicals in your brain, and adds a social element to your
day, it has great stress reduction benefits.

Improved Cardiovascular Health

Better cardiovascular health is a
nice benefit which can help reduce your blood
pressure as well as the risk of stroke and heart attack.

To point out, a
recent study
in the International Journal of Research in Exercise Physiology found
middle-aged and older adults who played one hour of pickleball three days per
week for six weeks improved their blood pressure, cholesterol, and
cardiorespiratory fitness levels.

Weight Management

When you play pickleball you are burning around 40 percent
more calories than you would by just walking. In fact, research indicates that
a 150-pound person can burn 250 calories playing pickleball with only 30
minutes of casual play.

Better Cognitive Function

Pickleball protects cognitive
function, since you are communicating with
your partner in doubles, thinking through game strategies and giving your
reflexes a real workout.

Building Social Engagement

Social connections counter the isolation many boomers face and help prevent
depression, low self-esteem, and loss of independence. In fact, a
study done by Leisure Studies
found that boomers who played in pickleball tournaments
had a lower risk of depression.

Pure Enjoyment

When an exercise activity is fun,
it’s easier to commit to, which can help you to
better achieve your fitness goals. This is very important since only about 20
percent of adults get the recommended amount of physical activity they should
be getting.

Good Balance

Many sports increase your
balance, and better balance can help reduce
your risk of falls as well as improve your overall agility and range of
movement.

Help with Parkinson’s

Pickleball can help you manage
Parkinson’s symptoms as it combines hand and
eye coordination that is considered excellent therapy for those suffering from this
disease. This is not surprising since exercise is usually a key part of
Parkinson’s symptom management.

Mixing Generations

Another benefit of pickleball is that it’s a great game to
play with your kids and grandkids. One “pickler” reported seeing boomers
teaching the sport to younger family members. Others have reported local kids
walking by a court, seeing the game, asking about it, and then even joining in.

Getting the Most out of Pickleball

Like any other physical activity, before taking to the
pickleball court, you should first check with your doctor to make sure you can
engage in this level of physical activity.

Once you have the go-ahead, you should also make sure that
you are taking the right steps to reduce any potential injury as well as make
sure your body is getting the right nutritional “fuel” to maximize both your
enjoyment of playing pickleball and its benefits.

Invest in Protective Equipment

The first thing to do is make sure you have supportive
shoes to help protect against twisting your ankle or knee as well as
stabilizers/supports if needed for your knees, wrist, or forearm. You can find
both at any sporting goods store.

Do Warm-Ups

You also need to remember to always, always warm-up before
playing pickleball – or any other sport for that matter. This, along with
stretching and cooling down after your play, will go far in helping you avoid
any injuries.

Don’t Forget Nutrition

As with almost every aspect of our
health and physical performance, making sure our bodies are getting the
nutrients they need (and when they need them) is important for all “picklers,”
whether you’re new to the game or have been playing for a while.

Most experts agree that you will want to make sure to have
some carbohydrates an hour or so before you play. You don’t want to overdo it,
so consider something simple such as a few banana slices with some oatmeal,
some cereal (no sugar added, of course), a fruit-and-protein smoothie or some
nuts.

Water Is a Must

The most important thing to
consume while you’re on the court is water. I can’t tell you how important it
is to stay hydrated in general and especially when we’re playing sports or
doing exercise.

And, when you’re done, make sure to replenish the nutrients
and water you lost while playing. I personally like to have some fresh fruit
and nuts after I hike or play any sport with a large water chaser!

Have you or do you now play pickleball? How did you get started? If you
play, what health or other benefits have you noticed? What advice would you
give your fellow boomers who may be considering it? Please join the
conversation.

3 Ways Movement Can Optimize Your Brain Health After 60

3 Ways Movement Can Optimize Your Brain Health After 60

In recent years,
research continues to find a strong connection between mobility and decline in brain health. It’s been long
established that exercise and movement help promote mental health and fight
symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even PTSD.

But we continue to
learn that the benefits of movement extend beyond the management of mental
health conditions and into the realm of prevention and brain optimization.

For example, research on dementia risk factors consistently finds
that loss of strength, walking speed, and balance are strong predictors of a
future decline in brain health.

Given all of this information, it’s impossible to deny that our body and mind work together. The good news is that we can use this mounting evidence to our advantage.

Your Movement Habits as a Window to Your Brain Health

Your movement
provides a window to your brain. As a physical therapist, I can watch an
individual’s movement patterns to determine where they might be having areas of
brain decline. For example, difficulty keeping balance with walking can
indicate difficulty with planning complex tasks or visuospatial reasoning.

Not only can your movement habits paint a picture of what might be going on with your brain health, but you can also use movement as a tool to optimize your brain.

The great news is
that you don’t have to become a marathon runner or powerlifter to reap the
brain-health benefits. Research has found that a formal exercise practice is not necessary, it’s just about
getting up and moving often.

Adopting a Movement-Based Lifestyle to Promote Brain Health

There are ways of
moving that can have a bigger impact in promoting brain health than others. One
of the most common mistakes I see people make is adopting the habit of mindless
movement or exercise.

Jumping on a
treadmill in front of a TV provides a greater benefit than sitting on the
couch, but also misses a huge opportunity to optimize brain health along with
moving more.

As biomechanist Katy Bowman would argue, the solution isn’t to add more formal “exercise” to your day but instead to focus on adopting a movement-based lifestyle. It doesn’t help to focus on exercise for 30 minutes a day only to be sedentary during your non-exercise time.

“To increase the
benefits of physical activity, strive to put more movement back into your life.
Choose to walk instead of drive, seek out active chores, and learn to move more
during your non-exercise time.” –Katy Bowman

Adopting the habit of mindful movement
throughout your day will help you get more bang for your movement buck. It
starts with learning how to observe yourself.

Understand the ways in which you move,
and even more importantly, how you aren’t moving. Make your movement a mindful practice
for maximum benefits.

The Benefits of Movement on Brain Health

People who move
more throughout their day report a higher sense of well-being. They have more
energy, sleep better, have better memory, and report more positive feelings
about their lives.

Studies have found
that even just having a higher perception and more positive feelings associated
with health can make you less likely to develop chronic disease.

So, don’t wait to
get started living a movement-based lifestyle to optimize your brain health.
This type of living is accessible to anyone.

Here are 3 ways
movement can help you optimize your brain.

Increased Circulation to the Brain

Moving more gets
the blood flowing throughout your body, which benefits all of your organs but
is most impactful for your brain.

Poor brain
circulation can cause “brain fog” and, in the most extreme cases, the death of
brain cells. It’s likely you’ve experienced brain fog and a lack of clarity at
some point. This feeling is a good indication to get yourself up and moving.

Movement enhances
brain health by improving circulation throughout the brain. Having better
circulation means better delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain, which
are critical for its function. The more you disperse your movement throughout
the day, the more often you can promote circulation to your brain.

Formation of New Neural Pathways and Strengthening Existing Ones

For every new movement you try, you form new neural circuitry. It’s similar to learning to play a musical instrument or adopting a new language. You can use the connections from your muscles to your nervous system to help stimulate various parts of the brain.

The less variety
you have with your movement, the less stimulation your brain is getting. Adding
variety to your movement can be as simple as going for a walk in a different
environment.

Trying different
ways of getting on and off the floor. Or trying different arm positions during
a squat. Every little variation you add stimulates your brain in a different
way.

Exercise and
movement have also been shown to help increase brain volume through the
formation of new neural circuitry. This happens through a combination of
hormone stimulation and increased blood flow to the brain.

This boost in
volume has been noted in areas of the brain that help with memory, reasoning,
and learning.

Promoting Specific Hormones to Enhance Brain Health

Physical activity
is so powerful that it’s been demonstrated to be more effective than
anti-depressants in cases of depression.

Of course, there is
a time and a place where medication is the right choice, but physical activity
can both enhance the activity of medication and provide a sustainable strategy
for managing and preventing mental health conditions.

Regular movement
helps release hormones like endorphins and serotonin, which help lift your
mood. It also helps promote dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain
which helps with attention and focus.

An increase in
these hormones helps reduce levels of cortisol, or stress hormones, in the
body. Lower levels of cortisol have been linked with a lower risk of chronic
disease.

The more you get yourself moving, the more you can reap these benefits.

Adopting a movement-based lifestyle is one of the most powerful ways to optimize your brain health and set yourself up for a healthy future. Keep it simple. Just focus on moving and moving often.

How often do you
move mindfully? How often do you perform mindless exercise? Which chores can
you use to enhance your activity level throughout the day? Please share with
our community.

Since You’re Afraid to Ask—Yes, Eye Creams Actually Work

In the immortal words of Ice Cube, today was a good day. Why you ask? I actually remembered to put on eye cream. Admittedly, I’m still a skeptic in recovery. Less than a year ago, you couldn’t convince me it was anything but an unnecessary purchase that added some benefit to the face but ultimately didn’t have to be in my routine. Do eye creams work? I guess it depends on your expectations. If it’s to make those dark circles disappear in a few short days, you’ll be disappointed fast. If it’s to completely reverse the effects of bad habits that take years to die, well, don’t kill the messenger. You know the answer isn’t good either.

There is, however, an art to putting on eye cream which may sound a bit pretentious, but considering just how complex our skin is, I would argue that I’m not saying enough. But since I know time is money and you want to know if this stuff is actually worth the extra couple dollars in your budget, let’s get into why eye cream is made in the first place, what does the best job of addressing those setbacks and how we should be applying them to our face.

Why Do We Need Them?

If our skin is a work of art, some maintenance is required, right? Masterpieces in the MoMA are guarded with a lock and key, so we should be treating our face the same, especially the skin around our eye which happens to be thinnest and consequentially, the most damage-prone. It’s an easy enough concept to understand, but we usually don’t grasp it until we’re older and wiser with the fine lines and sunspots to show for it.  (I seriously wish younger me wore sunscreen as much as she wore tanning oil.)

Like a painting or carefully constructed bungalow in the Californian desert, three very specific factors affect the luminosity of skin around the eye: color, reflection and shape.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Color

As far as color is concerned, light changes and reveals the skin. Specifically, it’s a kaleidoscope of chromatic undertones that can cause a slew of visible changes to the eye area. “The red and violet chromatic disturbances are particularly visible under the eyes,” says Dr. Jacqueline Hill, Director of Strategic Innovation and Science for La Prairie. “Leakage of blood from the capillaries to the surrounding tissues, followed by oxidation of the blood, also adds to the under-eye darkness.”

If you really want to geek out, here’s a breakdown of how and why each color becomes visible in the under-eye area according to Dr. Hill:

  • Grey: as a result of pollution particles accumulating on the skin surface. This gives a dull and sad look to the expression.
  • Brown: due to the accumulation of the brown pigment melanin in the epidermis. This leads to irregular pigmentation and age spots.
  • Yellow: due to the accumulation of glycated collagen fibers in the dermis. This gives a sallow, unhealthy look to the skin.
  • Red: as a result of blood capillaries dilated by chronic silent inflammation. This leads to irregular diffuse redness.
  • Violet: dark under-eye-shadows are mainly the result of both oxygenated and especially de-oxygenated hemoglobin from blood capillaries. The de-oxygenated blood appearing bluish because it is low in oxygen. This gives a tired and sad look to the face.

Reflection and Shape

Uneven texture, sagging and fine lines are common complaints about aging skin, all of which can be boiled down to one word: shape. It’s a part of life, but let’s be real: it’s not always fun to come to terms with, especially if you know you could’ve taken better care of your skin beforehand.

According to Dr. Hill, the rough surface is caused by dehydration (aka not enough moisture), poor skin barrier (aka not enough sunscreen and antioxidants) and irregular desquamation (aka peeling). As a result, the “skin looks dry and dull, feels uncomfortable and generally, processes are slowed down due to lack of water.”

Like a ripple effect, this loosens the density and thickness of that skin as protein fibers break down and take longer to renew themselves. Over time, those fine lines start to settle in, the skin starts sagging beyond its natural pace and loses its luminosity, otherwise known as reflection.

Eye bags can also form prematurely “due to the accumulation of fluids and fat under the eyes caused by poor drainage and lack of microcirculation. Sunscreen and eye cream sounds a lot more appealing now, huh?

La Prairie.

The Fixer-Uppers

Stick with me herehelp is on the way, in the form of active ingredients. There is a lot to choose from, but according to Dr. Hill, the most effective ones are…

For Color: peptides, age spot inhibitors and antioxidants for a brighter complexion

The peptides specifically address those red and violet chromatic disturbances I already mentioned, while antioxidants protect the skin barrier from the elements and inhibitors prevent the overproduction of melanin, thus leading to dark spots.

For Reflection and Shape: ingredients packed with ceramides, omega fatty acids and amino acids for firmness and suppleness.

Again, there are plenty of eye cream options, both expensive and affordable, that claim to provide the benefits of these ingredients which are admittedly pretty common. So what sets a brand like La Prairie apart? Simply put, a lot of research, some clinical trials and patented innovations that take benefits to a whole other level.

For instance, La Prairie’s White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire is made with Lumidose, a highly potent active (with 90 patents!) that fights age spots and was developed over 15 years of research and 50,000 ingredient screenings before going public. There’s also the brand’s signature luxe ingredient, golden caviar extract renewably sourced from Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, a type of fish found in the Caspian Sea.

According to Dr. Hill, it’s “rich in lipids such as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, as well as sugars, amino acids and minerals, and helps increase the formation of ceramides in epidermal cells and collagen in dermal cells.” All of these improve the smoothness of the skin as well as luminosity and firmness. Lastly, at the heart of every La Prairie skincare product is an exclusive cellular complex that uses cutting-edge research to put life and energy back into the cells that make up our skin by targeting the most essential skin cells.

And of course, all of these ingredients are clinically tested once combined to create a product.

The Application

Generally speaking, eye cream should be applied every morning and night around the eye, but not too close to it. After cleansing your face, gently apply cream around the eye, starting at the inner corner and moving toward the temple. From the temple, continue the gesture back along the brow bone to the inner corner. Most experts recommend dabbing with your ring finger since it applies the least amount of pressure, though you can do the same thing with a fancy took like the ceramic pearl applicator on La Prairie’s White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire.

Once the cream is distributed and sitting on top of your skin–whether you’re using a tool or not–start under the eye at the inner corner, dab or roll toward the temples and then above the brow bone and back to the crease between the eyes. “Once you reach the bridge of the nose, continue the gesture back towards the outer corner by rolling the ceramic pearl along the lower brow line. Continue along the upper cheekbone to the inner corner of the eye to finally return up to the crease between the eyes,” says Dr. Hill. “Stroke the crease in an up-and-down movement three times. One last time, roll the ceramic pearl along the upper line of the brow to the temple. Press gently and release. Repeat the entire circuit twice more.”

If you’re a visual learner, make sure you screenshot this chart, especially if your eye cream of choice is La Prairie’s:

All in all, eye cream is worth the investment. Just make it worth your while by using it correctly, whether you prefer something from the department store or drugstore.

Christie Brinkley is Living Her Best Life at 66 – And You Can, Too!

Christie Brinkley is Living Her Best Life at 66 – And You Can, Too

As we progress through our lives, birthdays often become
something that we regard with apathy and indifference or worse yet, dread.

But, if we are lucky enough, these mile markers will
continue to come around each year…so, why not find a way to celebrate our age
rather than shame it?

Christie Brinkley, 66, is the perfect role model for not
only embracing our age but celebrating it with joy and gratitude.

Looking Back

Perhaps you’ve heard the advice to never look back in life
and always forage ahead, looking towards the future.

While this advice certainly has it merits, there is
something to be said for occasionally looking back on all that we have
accomplished, endured, and overcome in the past year.

Which is exactly what Christie Brinkley did as she happily began her 66th year. Proving that life is full of surprises, Brinkley kicked off her 66th birthday on February 2nd by popping out of cake, captioning an Instagram post with, “I never would have guessed that I would start my 66th year of life popping out of a cake! But that’s EXACTLY what I did as Guest Ringmaster in NYC’s own Circus!”

Her Instagram caption continued on to share highlights from
her past year, saying, “In fact my whole past year has been filled with so many
incredible milestones! From reprising my role as Roxie Hart on Broadway! And
headlining the show in Las Vegas! I went [on] Dancing with the Stars and
foxtrotted over to ABC’s hit show The Goldberg’s season premiere where I
reprised my role as The Girl in the red Ferrari from the classic hit film Vacation!
I harvested grapes from the Bellissima vineyard in Italy and watched my
children’s careers and passions blossom! 🎂.”

While we may not all be able to enjoy such lavish
experiences in our own lives, Brinkley’s caption serves as the perfect reminder
that looking back on the special moments and experiences from the past year can
be extremely fulfilling and joy-inducing.

Looking Forward

Just as looking back can help foster gratitude, looking
forward is equally important!

Reminding ourselves that life is full of surprises and
remaining open to all of the possibilities that life presents to us is one of
the best ways to live each year to the fullest.

Not one to only look backwards, Brinkley closed out her
birthday Instagram post by saying,
“I can’t wait to see what exciting #milestonesofme await for 2020! With age
comes wisdom and confidence which I find to be liberating! I also know I feel
my best when I look as good as I feel.”

With each passing year, as Brinkley aptly points out, we’re
each given the gift of growing wiser, more experienced, and hopefully, getting
to know ourselves just a little bit better. Rather than focusing on the numeric
value of our age or an additional gray hair or wrinkle, why not focus on the
lessons learned, the smiles shared, and the wisdom we’ve acquired?

Let’s all take a cue from Brinkley and how she celebrates
her birthdays with equal amounts of gratitude for the past and excitement for
the future, embracing each passing year with open arms.

Furthermore, Brinkley’s daughter, Alexa Rae Joel, 34,
admires the way that her “ageless, tireless, dauntless Golden Supermom”
approaches not only her birthdays, but life in general, commenting, “…I’m in
awe of how my mother jumps headfirst into life without pause. She’s not afraid
to put herself in a position where she may even be — dare I say — ‘laughed at’
by the cold cynics of the world. Anything you’re terrified of tackling?
Anything that scares the bloody daylights out of you? I guarantee you: If Mom
hasn’t already tried it, she’ll be first in line to do so.”

We applaud your zest for birthdays – and life – and wish you
the Happiest of Birthdays, Christie! Thanks for being a superb role model for
us all!

How do you celebrate your birthday? Do you have any
birthday traditions that help to make your birthday special? If you were to
look back on your past year of life, what milestones stand out the most? Share
your thoughts and comments below!
